3:38 That can not be easy, wow. just wow. It was like you spent the whole song waiting for that, you're almost bouncing as you lean into your screams like youre hyping yourself for that crescendo.
Dont want to say it's super easy but switching from true chord to false chord (talking/singing to screaming) is not hard if you know how to scream. It takes time and she obviously is a master at this but its not thaaat hard. Source: Im a hobby vocalist screaming for 6 years.
The way Courtney sways back and forth before she screams, and the passion she puts into it... I can only imagine how powerful seeing them live would be! I truly hope I get to experience it some day!
Not one of, Courtney will always most definitely be my favorite vocalist. Everyone else pales in comparison. Greg from The Dillinger Escape Plan is my second pick.
He's the only one imo who doesn't. I find it rare to find any vocalist who can master both clean vocals and harsh vocals. Courtney and Greg have done it.
Just watched The Charismatic Voice analyze this, had tears in my eyes by the end. Looking forward to the song without breaks. Well done good souls! God bless.
Ive always said she was a siren!! She lures you in with her beautiful, angelic singing and then rips you apart with her demonic screams.. and it's effin GLORIOUS!!
Something I don't see mentioned as much as the incredible technical ability and development that Courtney has is her lyricism. One of my favourite writers on paper, let alone colouring those lyrics with the level of performance we get treated to in these videos.Theres such duality between vulnerability and furious, righteous, raw outward emotion. There's a slew of music out there that sits at one side of the pendulum or the other, but there's spectrums in single songs with this band. And theres moments to me where the most vulnerable lyrics are delivered with hair raising aggression, and lines that are sung softly that are more cutting than any drop or breakdown. Beautiful and incredibly skillful writing.
Well said. Her phrasing is incredibly dynamic, delicate, powerful and her shot selection is intelligent. Where to kick up the aggression to lift the segment. There’s provocative nuance to the lyrical content that is undeniably beautiful, tragic.
@@andrewstout9579 I can almost guarantee you she didn't do this while sick, it's extremely vocally unhealthy to scream / sing / exert your voice like this when sick, it's a bad idea, and her managers probably wouldn't approve of it either.
Doesn't matter how many times I hear it, the chorus gives me chills and has an amazing uplifting tone. The line "feel the weight of a martyr" just hits my 33rd vertebrae.
same here, especially when you come out of REM sleep in the morning, the melody is already playing, the first thing I do is turn on the music system and listen loudly...
This is why I love raw and live performances; when the artist just gets into it and gives it that extra flair that you don't hear on the record, gives me goosebumps.
I mean, I like this version better because of the change in the last chorus, but how exactly is this any more “live” than what you hear on the record? The record was probably taking from 3-5 takes done exactly the same as this (again, apart from arrangement changes), with her “getting into it” just as much. I understand this argument when it’s talking about full band live, musicians do react differently when they’re playing with other musicians vs just listening to playback. I’d also understand if it’s in the context of a full set, where the fact that they’ve sung many songs and will keep singing more changes the approach entirely (arguably making the vocals more human). But the main different between these studio “one takes” and a recording is that a recording usually comes from the best from a few of these takes, but apart from that I don’t see much of a different in the situation the musicians are put into.
Spiritbox is only a couple years old, I know it feels like you've missed a ton, but, this is still the ground floor homie. They've been touring since... 2017? 2018?

With Spiritbox you guys for sure have created your own genre. This is what the scene needed. Thank you so much for your music 💙

I feel you. The one during the breakdown was beast, the one at the end was pretty sexy ngl.
Holy shit she murdered that ending!!!
When Courtney seamlessly goes from singing to screaming, PERFECTION. I get chills every singe time I rewatch this! I need this live version to be for sale!
How is it possible that *This* sounds better than the studio release version?!?! Damn this is good. Can't wait to check them out live!!!

Too much processing. Raw emotion removed.
I saw them in Chicago last summer when they opened for Limp Bizkit. They were really good.
They were insanely good live!!!! Just saw them in San Antonio!!

omg why am i just discovering this now
The amount of growth Courtney has done since this band's inception is fucking nuts. The pitched screams in the end section are Sam Carter level amazing and I had no idea Courtney could do them, let alone do them with that much control. I fucking love this band.
The amount she’s grown since IWresteldABearOnce is crazy!
@@devinbender8428 try Unicron.. they were a guilty pleasure back in the day. Then she joined IWABO.. was not a fan of her first album but hail Mary blew my mind. Was so happy when spiritbox was formed and they've just gotten better
I 100% thought that part was modified when listening to the studio version.
What in the fuck.
yeah true. Wasn't really a fan of this band purely because I thought her screams were pretty bad... but she's improved a lot. Her screaming is close to on par with most metal bands now. In saying that tho, I still think she uses it as a gimmick because her singing isn't good enough to stand on it's own. It's a shame the much more talented female vocalists of the past like Angela gossow an otep never got as much attention
It’s so odd that from 3:25 and on, she literally makes my eyes swell and want to cry because of how god tier her vocal control is
Took the words right out of my mouth, man. I literally teared up from that point up to the end. I wish the studio version was just as raw

@@MrBeefyweefs I honestly thought there was another vocalist in the song 😂 I really couldn't tell. Also for context I don't often listen to music with screaming (hope that's the right term) in it. 🤸🏾♀️
I have NEVER, in 30+ years of listening to heavy music, heard singing and screaming so seamlessly intertwined. Stunned.
She’s a fantastic vocalist. I’m just upset that most of the music sounds so generic, but this song is very well written.
Then you really should check out Devin Townsend for example, he can do this aswell. ;)
Both are amazing
Courtney is amazing but also check out jinjer for a similar experience!
Its been done in the mainstream. Chester bennington did the same
Same. She switches between cleans and heavies so easily and makes it look effortless.
3:38 That can not be easy, wow. just wow. It was like you spent the whole song waiting for that, you're almost bouncing as you lean into your screams like youre hyping yourself for that crescendo.
It takes talent to make it look easy.
the hardest part is probably learn to scream in a proper way, once you get that it becomes second nature.
@@sweiland75 Practice*
Dont want to say it's super easy but switching from true chord to false chord (talking/singing to screaming) is not hard if you know how to scream. It takes time and she obviously is a master at this but its not thaaat hard.

The way Courtney sways back and forth before she screams, and the passion she puts into it... I can only imagine how powerful seeing them live would be! I truly hope I get to experience it some day!

@@infectedstray2188 So Greg pales in comparison? Lol, trippin homie.
He's the only one imo who doesn't. I find it rare to find any vocalist who can master both clean vocals and harsh vocals. Courtney and Greg have done it.
Such. Passion. Such authenticity. Hands down artistry. Literally teary eyed.
Just watched The Charismatic Voice analyze this, had tears in my eyes by the end. Looking forward to the song without breaks.
Well done good souls!

Incredibly talented band, and Courtney is a Siren. Her voice is just haunting.
Ive always said she was a siren!! She lures you in with her beautiful, angelic singing and then rips you apart with her demonic screams.. and it's effin GLORIOUS!!
i would run screaming into the sea to my doom for her.
Couldn’t agree more! I feel like Silent Planet also fits this bill. The vocals match the emotion of the lyrics in order to better convey the intent.
Even the way she puts emphasis on certain words & syllables in her lyrics is unique. She’s definitely a great storyteller.
Few bands can actually give you goosebumps from this level of talent and emotion.
Spiritbox is one of them. 🤘
This deserves SO much respect! Inconceivably impressive.
I still can't believe that she recorded this when she was sick. That's so beyond impressive!
Somehow her sick voice made it haunting which made it even better. She is not of this Earth
How do you know she was sick?
@@AnonymousQwerty She mentioned it on Twitter around the time the video was released
@@andrewstout9579 I can almost guarantee you she didn't do this while sick, it's extremely vocally unhealthy to scream / sing / exert your voice like this when sick, it's a bad idea, and her managers probably wouldn't approve of it either.
@@Doomsday499 She literally tweeted that she was sick when she recorded the video. It's not a debate lol
I know everyone's already said it, but that "it could AAAALL be YOURS" is insane. Inspiring as hell.

Doesn't matter how many times I hear it, the chorus gives me chills and has an amazing uplifting tone. The line "feel the weight of a martyr" just hits my 33rd vertebrae.
Imagine the weight of it all man…
this version of the song has been stuck in my head for over 2 months every day...
same here, especially when you come out of REM sleep in the morning, the melody is already playing, the first thing I do is turn on the music system and listen loudly...
DAAAAAAAAAMMNNNN the way you ended the song mixing your cleans at that mid high tone with the very potent delicious screams was SICK!! 🤘🏾🤘🏾
This is why I love raw and live performances; when the artist just gets into it and gives it that extra flair that you don't hear on the record, gives me goosebumps.
So much this. This and the rule of nines one take have already replaced the album versions, for me
She's without a doubt one if the best vocalist out right now. Her and Evan Pharmakis for me personally
@@iurigrang what would make it live is that it's not mixed, mastered or pitch corrected. Just the raw live audio
