Greenhouse Rain Barrel expansion build

  • Growing season is here and rain water is a huge free commodity. One rain barrel is great but 2 is better! Second rain barrel installed on a new 4x4 bench ready for a third.
    Camera: GoPro5
    Drone: DJI Mavic Pro
    Editing software.....so here's a little story about that:
    I usually use Wondershare video editor and have for years. After uploading all the files, importing them to wondershare and editing the entire video, the program crashed and crashed and crashed and.....broke. Their customer service suggested purchasing a new version which doesn't help.
    I ended up using my GoPro studio, which is kind of like driving an old mini van. So, video clips imported, clips cut, converted and edited....again. Then, testing every fiber of patience I have, the software crashed at 90% while rendering.
    After a good nights sleep, and a strong pot of coffee, I rebooted everything and found GoPro studio doesn't like DJI files and had to render in a separate file and transfer back to get it to work.
    So, I hope you like the video and appreciate all the efforts it took to get this created. A thumbs up would be pretty cool, a sub would be even cooler. ATB

    Hey man I got one of these barrels why is there an open nipple at the top front with no filter or anything to stop bugs or anything getting in???

    Do you drain the barrels in the winter?

    • @fireballmalone1
      @fireballmalone1  3 роки тому

      No, it doesn’t get cold enough here. The top layer of water may freeze but the barrels have gone every winter so far without any issues.

    How do you keep it warm in the winter?

    • @fireballmalone1
      @fireballmalone1  4 роки тому

      C E When we built it we did our best to make sure it is sealed up pretty good to keep as much warm thermal air contained, and cold air out. During the peak of the day it has been as much as a 24 degree difference from the outside. At night it does get cold but we use garden fabric to cover everything to keep the soil cold if it gets really really cold. We only water in the morning to avoid frost and this past winter we made a compost bail inside the greenhouse which made a huge difference. Hope this helps! Cheers

    Hey, that's great! I've been wanting to be more responsible with rain water, too. I don't use a lot of water, so I've been holding off on getting a rain barrel, but I Instead spent the last week or so installing a small rain garden. Basically, it's a shallow depression in the ground that captures rain water from my gutters. It's filled with native plants that help filter pollutants out of the water.

      JBtheExplorer That’s a great idea. I have been considering doing something like that in the front where 2 downspouts go nowhere. It’d be nice to add another feature. Hope to see a video of yours!

      I will definitely post a video at some point. I still have a few minor improvements to make. I had a small area to work with, so it's not exact as perfect as I'd like, but it should look great when plants establish.

    Found your channel looking for greenhouse builds. Have subsequently enjoyed your misting video and water barrel video. You are a born teacher, I always understand precisely how you're doing things and you don't ramble on and get try to be entertaining. Though entertaining you are as well. Learning a lot thanks so much for the effort of videoing. 👍

      This is such a great comment, thanks! It was a fun build and I am looking forward to getting stuff going again this year. Got some seeds going but it keeps frosting at night so I have had to be careful. Good luck with everything and ATB!

      I really appreciate the feedback! After I added the solar pump and misting system it has really helped grow stuff without much added cost. Good luck on your projects!

    Malone, enjoyed the video. As for your sediment problem. Perhaps a fine metal mesh over the barrels, might help mitigate the sediment build up? Cheers, Mate.

      Jack Walsh that is a great idea, thanks for the suggestion. I am going to be looking for a solution today because we have rain coming in on Tuesday. Thanks again, ATB

    How is the solar powered misting system? My solar powered exhaust fan for the greenhouse is working out really well.

    • @fireballmalone1
      @fireballmalone1  6 років тому +1

      Paula Beattie That is great to hear you have a solar exhaust fan! I’m a bit jealous. The misting system is working really well. The nozzles were getting plugged from all the pollen sediment so I put an RV water filter on the line going in and it has made a huge difference. I am still working on installing a timer to the voltage regulator. If you have any suggestions I’m all ears! Thanks and good luck this season, ATB

    I notice you don't have a first flush component to your barrel system...do you have any problems with debris buildup in your first barrel?

  • @kr5289

    since you mentioned the Teflon tape, you put it on the right way, but if you'll flip the roll around you can pull it tight as you put it on it makes it a lot easier. great video I plan on building one like this.

    I think that I might have used the overflow outlets to transfer water from one barrel to the other. Is there any reason why you haven't connected them up?

      The water will equalize and he only needs 1 faucet.
