I was so close to getting up and cleaning my apartment before the Major League Baseball All-Star Home Run Derby. Now I'm going down this rabbit hole instead.

Great video. I just got the Vocaster One, and after playing around a bit, I have some good news about the Hub software: In the latest update (v1.30), you can now tweak the Enhancements by moving the sliders for Compression, or for the Bass, Mid, or Treble bands. (You can't Save your custom adjustments with a new name, but they will be remembered -- and then you can reset everything to defaults, in the hamburger settings.) Also under the hamburger menu, you now have several options for how the Auto Gain will work: Default, Stream, or Camera, each targeting a different level. I do like the sound of the SM7B with the Radio preset.

On the app, the bottom mixer if we mute host mic, can remote guest like aux phone call or bluetooth phone call still hear me when i spoke to the host mic? Its very important for remotely recording show for 2 guest and i dont want the audience here my voice (host).
I want all the guest hear me but my voice not included in the show mix

I thought about buying one for auto gain but after watching this it’ll be easier just to compress the vocals after recording on the 2i2.

My dear friend, I didn't think the build quality was bad but design flaws render this perhaps too expensive for what it is supposed to do. The comparison I'll use is the Zoom P4 which has four inputs with a gain control for each (individually adjustable), individually adjustable 48v phantom power, battery operation, Bluetooth capability ($49 adapter), sound pad (and a fifth pot), individual headphone gain control, TRRS input for smartphone connection with mix minus, USB C input and can operate as an audio interface as well as recording onto a SD card. All for $219 US (+$49 for Bluetooth and about +$7 for a USB C charger and cable) and sometimes $20 less on sale. Vocaster is an interface only powered from your computer's USB port with no recording capability, no individual gain control "pot" for phone/bluetooth (can only be done in the software which means it must be connected with a computer that's compatible with the software and not all are), no individual 48v phantom power and USB C connection is also software controlled. All of this, of course, suffers from your computer's fan which adds noise while recording. $299 USD for LESS functionality and convenience. Absolutely nuts that Focusrite didn't include these features in the design. And if you were looking for a comparable interface without mix minus the Evo4 is $129 US (and smaller). On the other hand, the Vocaster preamps seem to have more clean gain (enough to power SM58 and SM57B without a Fathead or pricey/bulky Cloudlifter). I regret buying the Vocaster. I've used it and it sounds nice but far, far less convenient to use than the P4 (and it costs more). Also, Focusrite support here in the U.S.was terribly unhelpful (UK was better but still couldn't resolve software issue though they are revising advertising to clarify the compatibility issue -- too late for me). P4 also has more traditional metering. For the price, Focusrite could and should have delivered something that at least is as convenient to use as the P4. And Zoom could beef up the P4 to a plus version with better build quality, preamps and battery life.

      @ste8ven Рік тому

After reading your comment I went on to search more about p4, but found out the main difference between the two is that P4 can only record 16 bit sound files. The default is 24 bit, so this would be the main weakness for p4.

@@DarkCornerStudios Wow, thanks for the reply! Great job on the video. Always like honest opinions more than 1 sided advertisements. I still pre-ordered the vocaster as it seemed like a good deal, but alot of comments on other videos talking about problems with the sound quality and software. But I'm just starting off with a new sm7b for zoom calls for work, so I think I can learn through this process.

@@ste8ven it's seems everything released these days has a bunch of similar issues.
I wonder if supply chain QA is to blame.

Even though there's only one indicator light, Vocaster 2 does have independently controlled 48V phantom power for its inputs. My gripe with the unit was with the limited routing and submix capabilities of the software. It's unfortunate because Focusrite got a lot of things right (e.g. high power gain, mute button, bluetooth and 3.5mm output, two headphone outputs, etc.) but missed a lot of features that would've made this unit a much more compelling buy.

Between the Vocaster One, Audient Evo 4 and Elgato Wave XLR, what would you choose ? To give you some context, I'd use this solely for discord/gaming/meetings. I don't need to record anything. I just want something that drives my HD600's well and my SM57, in a compact neat looking unit.

Good review, short and straight to the important points. I would like to ask your opinion about Vocaster 2 vs Podtrak P4. Knowing that now the price for Vocaster 2 is 230€ and the P4+Bluetooth is 200€, which would you recommend? Besides, which is the best in audio quality in your opinion? Thanks

The competition is not the PreSonus Revelator io24? The reason I'm looking at this is because PreSonus screwed up and the dang thing constantly loses its presets since the software update in December.

  • @rickkennedy1655

I've seen many of the reviews about this product using a smartphone for music, but can you actually bring in a phone call (such as a call-in) for a two-person podcast with one person on the XLR microphone and the other person on the phone call? Does the TRRS cable provide the capability for the person on the phone to hear you? I am surprised that not one reviewer tested this device with a phone call, especially since many solo podcasters may have a call in guest. Thanks in advance to anyone that responds.

    • @DarkCornerStudios

      Yes...you can take phone calls.
All the "podcasting" interfaces have this...and testing it can make for boring videos

I bought it now. This device is what i wished from Rode. I sold my Rodecaster Pro II for this and do everything with VSTs now what the RCP II can do. It is MUCH EASIER to reach to the device, it saves a ton of desk space and is TRULY mobile, fits in a bag back!!!
