I love listening to the koto but I think it's a shame most koto players are not payed well as they should for all their hard work. I know a beautiful and talented koto and shamisen player in Tokyo but she struggling every day because she plays but she doesn't get paid well or doesn't get paid at all for performances 😔

As a musician myself, I would love to see other instruments from other parts of the world, this in fact struck me the most. I have been studying world music for a bit in secondary school, but non other than this. I do play the violin and piano and to me this is one of THE most stricking instruments I would love to play and just to compare the western traditional string instruments to eastern string instruments. If I would go to Japan, this would be one of my first things to do on my list when I go there.

It also looks so interesting to learn to play, i love the food, clothes, music, culture i love it so, much so pretty! Their Koto playing sounded so beautiful despite being beginners and the peformance at the end even thought we only heard a part of it it sounded absolutely amazing!!💓 I hope one day to visit japan and experience the culture myself!

Sorry for a late comment, but I really loved this video! As a koto player, this brought me back to when I was first starting and Sakura used to be the song that I used as example when trying to explain it, because many have heard that song without knowing it. Rokudan was one of the first bigger pieces that I learned too. I do implore that everyone please watch the full Rokudan link because it shows so many ways to play notes such as how to strike the strings as well as the left hand altering/blurring notes based on when it is pushed/pulled. These techniques is what takes koto above the just 13 strings (how hard it can be) to sounds and difficulty that can't be recreated elsewhere. Like Shogo said, please try this instrument. Once you do though, you may find that you can no longer live in a world without it. 😸 It was also nice to see mention of the Kokyu. Sadly, that is harder to find music for because in many cases, it has been replaced by the shakuhachi flute.

i love the sound of the koto. thanks for sharing. but I have a question, you said in previous video giving 'naked money' in japan is not culturally accepted. what do you do with solo performers on the street or at events?

Shogo should try a reaction to Wagakki Band sometime. Am curious what he thinks of them.

Koto has to be my FAVORITE instrument, or as I've heard it called a "Dragon's Harp", is there any truth to that? Anyone? Not asking for a friend, either 😉😂
Edit: I've also heard it called a Dragons spine harp as well 😊

That’s exactly correct! Each part of the koto actually has a name related to dragons✨

Play a variety of stringed instruments and drums and I've always wanted to learn koto and kumi daiko. Unfortunately for me the cost of a decent, well made koto or a wadaiko are too much expensive
