What I find so interesting about Ikebana is where she says that symmetry isn’t interesting and having them at different heights and sizes is preferred. It a bit of a paradoxical for a society that is very collectivist and even has a saying, “the nail that sticks up will be hammered down.”
Yet at its root, desperately hidden away, is a plate of brutal spikes that keep the whole arrangement together. Those that take away from the 'beauty' are subtracted... lots of things that make you think of Japanese society.
As a reminder for you, acceptance of nature and harmony are also traits of Japanese culture. Nature and society are different things. Collectivist character is just a result of becoming resilient against natural disasters.
I've noticed Japanese really value things that seem to go against social structure. Art is probably a way to escape rigidity and perfection in some ways, and embrace individuality.. It's very interesting!
I'd love to do this sort of Japanese flower arranging, it just seems so calming and really beautiful. I've always wanted to look after a bonsai, I just like the quiet space that looking after and arranging plants gives me.
The three points she shared are also similar in Bonsai as well. The first thing I do is select a FRONT by carefully staring at the natural lines of the tree for a while. Once that's done, I start sculpting the "LINES" along the branches and working the "SPACES" between them. And then going for an "ASYMMETRICAL" design, I can along the "wabi-sabi" imperfect beauty of the plant come out. Great video!
You both did nice work I do love the woman who is directing you she's very calm and she knows exactly what she's doing and boy do I ever love sweet peas what a great choice
recently, in the game genshin impact, they had an ikebana minigame event held at a country based on japan. since genshin impact is a game that has many fighting mechanics, i found the event really relaxing. the event was just replicating the arrangement based on a reference picture, but it was really fun making my own arrangements too. i hope if i get the chance to go to japan, i can try this art on my own
Kazu and Tomoko did an amazing job with their ikebana. I love how insightful and helpful Emiko Ashida was. Truly an expert in her craft. I love this video, keep it up!
My girlfriend is an ikebana teacher (小原流 Ohara) so this was very informative to watch. Will definitely show her this cause she's also had to explain this to students. Awesome content Shogo!
I like the passage of time and the usage of space in the flower arrangement. I'm a big fan of progression in art and story telling. Learning Japanese flower arrangement is one for the bucket list.
I was just looking into taking an Ikebana class here in the States a few days ago and seeing this demonstration/teaching has convinced me to go for it. Thanks Shogo!
I've tried a bit of the Ikebana in my own country...oh how I'd love to see the cherry 🍒 blossoms in Japan!!! Thank you so much for showing us how to do ikebana, you 3 and ladies at the museum/ cultural workshop! !
I think Emiko Sensei is generous and helpful in getting you to achieve such beautiful creations. Love the ideas of depth, space and height. Really gets you thinking in 3 dimensions.
I've managed to discover your content despite loathing the "Shorts" format. I enjoy your insight on the Japanese language and culture. I'd be interested in seeing more longform content on the subjects.

There's a museum in my area that gives classes to learn how to do ikebana. It looks like I'm going to be signing up because I didn't understand the concept when I was reading about it on their website. Seeing it in praxis has changed my mind. Morikami, here I come!
I had a very sour first experience with ikebana as a kid. I wanted to make it myself but I kept getting interrupted by the teacher. It's so specific, I don't feel like I have any creative freedom at all.
Very sorry to hear you had a bad experience. It depends on the school a little and on the teacher a lot. Interrupting a student is not respectful, isually it’s show the practice, let the student try, correct after the student says „I’m ready“. Especially Ikenobo is about tradition and craftsmanship where as the newcomers like Ohara, Sogetsu have a stronger focus on expression. Maybe you can give it a second chance ?
I really like how it turned out, but does Ikebana have to do something with wabi-sabi? It's also an aesthetic where you find perfection in imperfection.
Very nice! Which school does Ashida-sensei belong to? Most of the „Big 5“ share the basic upright style. I’m a Sogetsu instructor, so hearing „Ikebana is placed in the tokonoma“ made me cringe a little :-) Sogetsu-school founder‘s motto was „out of the tokonoma: Ikebana anytime, anywhere with any materials“ and that was almost 100 years ago.
I feel like this is the channel/community to ask. I live in upstate New York, and do bonsai. Have a greenhouse and maintain 40 trees. I have researched two nursery's in Japan and plain to travel to. Do you, or anyone know of any in Japan that I should add to my list. Not looking to import, but tend to study their work for the two/three weeks I'm visiting
very informative and enjoyable. one point however, it's distracting when the person taping is speaking over the presenter. your voice becomes more dominant, no matter how low you're speaking. also, it makes it difficult to understand her, knowing she's speaking english as a second language, not to mention it's just rude, both to her, and the viewer.
Shogo-kun, it's 5:45 A.M., Monday morning and I'm getting ready for work. My first words today were, "No! Noooo! No, No, no, no no no no no nononono," when my alarm went off. I decided to "save up" my "Shogo-videos" just for this occasion, and so ARIGATŌ GOZAIMASU, to you and your team, for helping me to get through my Monday morning. ☕️🥴🥱😒😐 🇺🇸🤝🇯🇵

The term for this type of ideal is wabi-sabi.

OMG, same!
I'm also watching this to have an idea what to do with my flowers once the Serenitea pot maintenance is finished
I even preferred that event over fighting ones XD
that's actually a nice way to introduce people to Japanese culture!

This man creates the upmost premium 2am content. Never thought I’d enjoy flower arrangement, yet here I am.
I 💚 Ikebana. What a fabulous teacher she is and she is certainly not old! So much focus on appreciation of Nature must be keep her young!

I thorally enjoyed this episode, the flower arrangements are beautiful, I learn so much on this channel thanks.
WAK Japan seems like a real gem! So much stuff happening there. And the sensei seemed super nice :)
So calming and beautiful. What a wonderful video to see in the morning, with birds chirping and the sun coming up. 💜
Love how in the teacher's example it almost looks like a time lapse of a flower rising up to look towards the sky
This was VERY Fun and Beautiful!
Thank all of the Team Members for showing this to us!
Omg they are all so adorable. I love your videos and your team! You make me want to visit Kyoto even more! Thanks so much

It looks very relaxing while also being interesting. I like it. I prefer the minimalist look of ikebana compared to western flower arrangement.
That was enjoyable. It made me want to practice ikebana.

The flower arrangement by Ogawa san who arranges the flowers so beautifully and they feel very peaceful and precious.
To get a pattern from a different shapes is really nice to watch. Ikebana is really relaxing to watch
This was neet to learn thank you for uploading such an interesting art.
Beautiful video. Very elegant teacher
bravo supert jolie tres tres bien
I 😍these hidden gem videos! One day I will go to wak studio to try this!
How sublimely artistic.
Looks like very cleansing and relaxing activity. I would like to try Ikebana one day
Great work on the arranging!
What a great and informative video! I've always been interested in flower arrangement so this was a fun watch.
I so LOVE this Channel!!! Shogo LOVE! You make me want to visit Japan one day!

perfect!! love you !!
When Kazu asked which tulip was the better one I pointed at the one in full bloom without hesitation... I've already failed! :')
Please a video about shodo too, thanks Shogo!
The spoken English language is amazing!
'Imperfection is considered a form of beauty'... I believe that quote.
I really like how it turned out, but does Ikebana have to do something with wabi-sabi? It's also an aesthetic where you find perfection in imperfection.
Here's an idea is the correct way to hold the katana sheath on the left waist or on the back
The garden in the Middle reminds me of ancient Roman empire villas.
Funnily enough, my first exposure to ikebana was from an event in Genshin Impact. The flower arrangements were really pretty. OwO

I'm surprised you didn't cover the special backwards edged blades in fancy koshirae the samurai had to make these plant arrangements before battle
❤
i love cherry blossoms. :) no two are identical.
