"Cross-Eyed Mary" is a song by the British rock band Jethro Tull, released originally in 1971 as part of their iconic album "Aqualung." The song, written by the band's lead vocalist Ian Anderson, tells the story of a young girl living on the streets and facing societal struggles.
Jethro Tull is a famous British rock band known for their unique blend of folk, rock and progressive music. Formed in the late 1960s, the band was led by the charismatic frontman Ian Anderson, who also played flute in many of their songs.

My fav Tull song, not the same energy in his voice but still pulls it off like no other could. Rock on Ian and co.
They don't have bands this great anymore, what an era! They call it classic rock... because it has CLASS!!!!
Ian Anderson needs mentioned in the same breath as other great front men in rock n roll. his antics and mastery of an instrument no other front men even dared to do.... this sets him apart from all others. the Tull was in itself...alone.
Hell yeah
He should be the FIRST to be mentioned … every time! Unsurpassed front man in my book!
Amazing song, with rhe best intro and outro ever.
even in another 200 years I don't think anyone will be as talented as these fine men.
Ian Anderson is a legend
Dang if this is old age then rock on! The sound is true and young at heart. Great performance.
Ian...you and your band mates are brilliant!! bravo to you my friend
The flute intro to this is facking superb...
Ian Anderson & Jethro Tull RULES!!!!!! ROCK ON!!!!!!
Amazing to this day.
MARTIN REALLY DOES SMOKE ON THAT GUITAR!
My favorite Aqualung song.
Love the Tull.
More than AWESOME
Having seen Tull in the early 70's, I'd say they were one of the finest stage acts around at that time. My other favourite would be Gabriel's Genesis.
Oh! Thanks so much for this video! I saw him on this tour. Love!
uncross your eyes Mary and keep on rockin!
Great song! Great video!
Thanks god iommi left tull and made sabbath..my favorite 2 tull&sabbath
STILL GREAT after all these years!..this is 11 yrs ago,but they have been around since the 60's;) x
I love Tull and glad to see them playing out still. They may be a bunch of old guys but their live show puts to shame bands in their 20's!
The band that would be listened on Mars!
I caught their show at the Bayfront Auditorium in Pensacola Floriduh for the 25th yr in rock and Ian smoked like a whole pack of cowboy killa marlboro reds and played that flute like a madman. Roadies in the wings with fire extinguishers freakin amazing front row seats, those were passed and neatly stacked in the back. A 2 hr show with a 30 min oncore, I swear some flute spit hit me.lol I'll never be the same..I'm still sportin half a chubbie.
I thank god 4 jethro Tull .and aye he's getting on a bit when things are spelled out but seeing them still has the greatest of energy comin from tulls audience! Will listen and give thanx 4 the rest of me natch it's a love that's 4ever .
"A TRUE CLASSIC"........(-;
And What A Bunch Of Awesome Musicians!
in. absolutely the best formation of Jethro Tull of alls time
I agree, all your bands listed are fantastic and incredibly talented. What is impressive to me is what Tommy Shaw said about Kansas, He said Styx opened for Kansas when Leftoverture came out and Kansas just blew him away. That's incredible to me as Styx became popular with Lady, and I never heard of Kansas until I heard "Carry on Wayward Son. However, all great tunes!
Ian Awesome Anderson
Still awesome Ian!
They played at Tanglewood an Madison Square Garden. They arrived. Awesome.
genius
Classic by the “Teacher” !!
70s and 80s Tull was incredible live. Poor Ian really is losing his voice around this time, no power left there
Just had to say it didn’t you. This is a great performance so STFU.
Sure did, an awesome track! Kudos to the original.
Man, he gets a mean tone out of that Strat!
dam awesome song..
0 dislikes. now that's a spirit :)
Right on man. Sorry to have left out a lot of fantastics; but I should never have left out Led Zeppelin, Boston, REO Speedwagon, and Pink Floyd.
Also agree. Great band...got ians auto. On the tour program for the songs from the woods album...greatest guitar solo in aqualung.
@AckroPilot I'm 31 but I love Jethro tull
Yes they do: Rush, Kansas, Styx, Yes, ELP.All fantastic
Saw them in '88, '93 and '96 at Columbia, MD and '97 and '99 in Baltimore. Yes I was drinking but I think they only played this once out of all these shows. They played Nothing is easy every time???
@gurumba1 Ah!!! when you get older you do slow down a bit...I know i been listening to old Ian for 40 some years and i'm 60 now...and i can relate to the old master...Keep on rocking Ian..even when your in a wheelchair...LOL
NICE
Great
Does anyone know what the story is about Ian's voice. I saw them in the '70s when his voice was incredible. I read he had some sort of injury but I can't find any details. Just curious because I saw them just 2 weeks ago and his voice is just a shell of what it once was.He even had another guy on stage doing some of the vocals. I still have tremendous respect for them but it's a shame some of the rockers have lost their voices.
His voice started going downhill in the late 70's and got considerably worse in the 80's. Now he just gulps for air and mumbles through his nose.
MareeeeeY!
Birthday greetings Ian 8/10/ 15
Re: tempo. This version = 86 BPM, album version = 86 BPM.
Anal, but good !!
spot on! lol
Cant believe someone could watch this and get hung up on original tempo. Yes, Ian can't leap across the stage and land on one foot anymore, or cant sing quite as high, but as far as im concerned he and Barre are rock royalty & deserve some respect for still being out there on the road after all these years......
Jethro Tull - Cross Eyed Mary (Live-HQ)
@hardbasball Check the 1971 version first, that is the real deal!
@loqutor check out the flutist on Marshall Tucker Band
What year was this....
Ron Burgandy, too!
I don't know about whether he had surgery or not, but he sure sounds good in this video.
What DVD is this from and how did I miss it? I thought I had them all.
Alienart maybe your eyes were crossed....lol
Living With the Past
Flike
Well, I guess it's time to pull out that DVD again. I must have forgotten half of it.
Old age is not for the faint of heart. These guys are talented as always, but they can't continue the old days forever. It hurts to see em old, fat, bald. I look in the mirror--me too! Sad.
is that the fantastic barriemore barlow on drums ?
Yes. Good catch. You still have it.
@loqutor -- dude, check out some Herbie Mann... try either "Memphis Underground" or, if you can find it, "Push Push" (with Duane Allman). great stuff.
@RushRulesRock he always changes his voice every show depending on the song hes doing
@loqutor If yer into metal, check out Blood Ceremony
@hardbasball The Tull version is the original.
Thats why lonnie is commenting on youtube an not being on youtube, hmmm
Rather listen to this then don doklens elevator music
renditions of the dokken classics
He actually looks younger here then in the 70s
True...his voice is pretty much shot. After 1990 or so, his vocals on some tunes became downright painful to listen to. Seems like he's done some work with a vocal coach to retain whatever voice is left. The lack of power and struggling with the high end is still painfully evident.
Illness and old age suck mightily.
Who cares this is a great vocal performance so enjoy it for what it is.
He's great and this song is fabulous but is he on ludes singing this song? lol
You like saying the word “ludes” don’t you? It makes you cool.
Who would be a poor man
A beggar man, a thief
If he had a rich man in his hand?
And who would steal the candy
From a laughing baby's mouth
If he could take it from the money man?
Cross-eyed Mary goes jumping in again
She signs no contract
But she always plays the game
She dines in hampstead village
On expense accounted gruel
And the jack-knife barber drops her off at school
Hey, laughing in the playground
Gets no kicks from little boys
Would rather make it with a letching gray, yeah
Or maybe her attention is drawn by aqualung
Who watches through the railings as they play
Hey, cross-eyed Mary finds it hard to get along
She's a poor man's rich girl and she'll do it for a song
She's a rich man stealer but her favour's good and strong
She's the Robin Hood of highgate
Helps the poor man get along, hey
Laughing in the playground
Gets no kicks from little boys
Would rather make it with a letching gray, yeah
Or maybe her attention is drawn by aqualung
Who watches through the railings as they play
Cross-eyed Mary goes jumping in again
She signs no contract
But she always plays the game
She dines in hampstead village
On expense accounted gruel
And the jack-knife barber drops her off at school
Hey, cross-eyed Mary
Oh Mary, oh, cross-eyed Mary

The key is taken down a step from the original. Thats why his voice does not sound as powerfull. Ian is smart enough to know how to save his voice, unlike some others who can't hit the notes they used to!
drank her blood from da brken side of the glove
I love this song plus I did her, she make a man like new
@jethrotullify Thick as a brick
Blöödy GähniÜ$ß -:-
she's cross eyed from trying 2 focus on purple headed yogert slinger in her face.
why is he singing so slow? Is he on ludes? lol
I understand Ian picked up the flute on a lark, and piddled with it on stage. Then he learned to play himself with no lessons.
Wow really? I bet none of us knew that! Thanks for the post and the enlightenment.
unlike rob halford. he can't do what he used to. but bruce dickinson can sing higher than when maiden was in their hayday
Bad point, and Maiden were never farmers.
Decent song and lyrics but his voice was not as "energetic" as, say, on the album...
Very excellent performance 😁
I'll take a gyro and a Heineken, tx along with a side of Tull,
this is cool. I just wish he didnt destroy his voice with smoking..
Is it me? or do all the Drummer's suck live but me? LOL don't comment unless you drum. Ive been playing drums all my life 48 year old. and every live show I see the drummer come no where near to playing the song like it was recorded. I play this song just as it was on the album. It's like there scared or something. some of the drummers with big bands are so hittous I'd be ashamed of releasing it if I was the artist...not saying this guy did a bad job but I pay close attention to every musical instrument .Hummm just my opinion
Lonnie Greer I like it when they mix it up .......especially when you have heard the studio version several times....
+Lonnie Greer Ahhhh Simon Phillips ?
Jethro Tull has been nothing if not stagnant through the years. They have never been here to meet fans expectations of "the good old days." And lord knows the longest standing, by far, Jethro Tull drummer Doane Perry (27 years) needs to make no apologies to Clive Bunker, a very sweet man and excellent drummer himself, for not totally aping his original interpretation. Doane always tried to respect the contributions that preceded him but finally he is, and was encouraged to be as all Jethro Tull musicians (a total of 35 down the years) themselves. Having said all that not at all sure the very best Tull drummers have not been the guys who were there for one year, re Dave Mattacks in 92, and Mark Mondesir on the Ian Anderson Band tour in 09.
The drumming here is pretty great. Of course the drummer is not shown but listen. ua-cam.com/video/WLL31o2iu44/v-deo.html
It is you. You suck live. I have heard you.
I love this song, the Aqualung album came out when I was 15. Unfortunately, this video is shit. They are trying to get all psychedelic with the video and it ruins it. Tull is colorful enough without going all artsy fartsy.
i dont like this too slow
Watch it faster.
For god's sake this is slow, not even close to the previous time song. What happened to Ian? My only frigin explanation is: 5 teeth out, and then he sung this monstrosity. Shame on you, boss. Pity that other people don't know real Cross Eyed Mary.
You are aging and obviously your listening has slowed down. Pity.
Where did his voice go? Even 1 whole key down, he can't do it. What a shame. Listen to the Iron Maiden version for a little pick-me-up.
Sounds fine. Suck it up, you can’t hear as well as you used to back in the day.
Meant to vote that comment up, but clicked on the thumbs down by mistake.
Horrible but better than Iron amaidens cover🤮
@loqutor If yer into metal, check out Blood Ceremony
