The part where Paul talks about how we are told that vegetables are so nutritious we don't want to miss out, when in reality they contain only minimal amounts was great and spot-on. I myself, thanks to Paul's videos and Shawn Baker as well, have finally realized that if a vegetable like a carrot is 95% water (give or take), then how can it possibly be more nutrient-dense than a piece of steak or some cheese? Same with lettuce, tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers and all the other common ingredients in the oh-so-healthy salads that are well over 90% water. You just don't need them, and actually not buying any of them at the store will save you a lot of money over time.

Hi Paul, gp reg in perth, wa here. Am doing carnivore. For your last question regarding carb cravings, look at supplementing with salt. When you are salt depleted your reward pathways in the brain become vulnerable to other addictive substances. When people are changing over to keto, I will always tell them to have salt either by itself or mixed with water (whatever that works for them) if they have any carb cravings, then after drinking salt to taste, check in on themselves if they still want carbs. Has worked like a charm.
Yes you guys are all awesome and very thankful for all your information. I went keto two months ago as I discovered I was a raging diabetic with blood sugar at 22.5 (400 American) and two months later I am testing between 4.6 and 7's
This is an older video . . . Paul says he takes Fish Oil @5:20 but in the video "Reversing dementia with diet" he says they are perhaps more oxidative than seed oils. (at 7:05)
Cod liver oil is different to fish oil. In this video he says he takes Cod liver oil which I believe has omega 6 and 3. Fish oil has omega 3 and little 6. Which I understand to be the problem.
I always pay attention to outlook of a person who may recommend this or that diet. And among all the presenters, Dr Paul Mason looks the best. I trust him completely! I may have a bit different opinion on sugar that it can be added together with high protein meal to ignite mTOR and grow some more muscles. But never and ever combine sugars and carbs with high fat diet. The only combination is lean meat with some sugars as a dessert. Or nor sugars neither carbs if it is a piece of fatty meat.
Funny thing with that sleep deprivation: it is the same with me now causing a switch to higher carb after couple of years of low carb, at least as a test…
@@thalesnemo2841 I have upped my Mg intake substantially (to 1g+) but I am still not satisfied with my sleep that is why I am upping carbs now, probably till winter
One reason to want to know how much protein you need is so you can keep it to a MINIMUM for short periods of time. I do a lot of long distance backpacking and protein only supplies 4 calories per gram of weight so I want to carry as little of it (and carbs) as I need to save weight in my backpack. For just a few days you can go quite low on all food but for long periods of time (a month long backpacking trip of 500 miles) you want a minimum amount of protein. It would be nice to know what that minimum amount is.
Putting salt on my food does not prevent cramps but taking a 1/2 teaspoon strait with a water chaser stops them in just a mater of a few minutes but this is for exercise induced cramps from hiking ALL DAY for 10 hrs. I also take 1/2 teaspoon once or twice a day if it's warm while hiking. If I quit hiking for a week I get start getting cramps at night that salt does not seem to cure . . . in that case only going for a long hike cures them. I guess that would be called "de-conditioning"
The problem with keto for endurance (marathon) racers is that they just dont have a lot of fat to draw from in a race so they all take carbs during the race. Being keto might help you not "hit the wall" and completely crash but you might still reach a point that you cannot get enough fuel and hit what feels like a huge "hill" and glucose is the only fast fuel you can get and even that can make you sick if you take too much at once when racing.
I wonder about carbs for stressful events. Carbs may be used for quick energy use (fleeing a predator), also often when someone is stressed may have the urge to 'pig out' with food. I personally sometimes get a headache if I am exposed to longer term stress.. and maybe having some carbs helps to ease that headache. Just playing devil's advocate and wonder if it's worthy for consideration.
Did I just hear Paul say that he takes fish oil? I have heard Paul say that we shouldn’t take fish oil because it is already oxidised. Which is it Paul?
Dr Mason I have a question for you. Forgive me if you've already answered it somewhere before but I was interested to hear your thoughts on inflammation response in regards to skeletal tissue and bone fractures being said to occur more often in those following a low carb diet. Could you possibly explain why this might be happening and how you would deal with it. Thank you.
@@1timbarrett I’m not sure if it’s the same research, but Paul Saladino likes to reference a study when he trashes keto, it’s called “short term ketogenic diet impairs markers of bone heath in response to exercise”. It was only 30 people and it was less then a month long. 3.5 weeks is definitely not long enough to fully keto adapt and they didn’t mention what they ate. If their diet consisted of pea protein and vegetable oil then sure maybe it was detrimental to their bones lol
Hi Paul, given this Q&A was recorded in the pre-COVID era, do you have any further suggestions on supplements that may assist such as Vit D? Also any thoughts on Vit D / K2 combination for vascular disease reversal? And Gary.. regarding your cake sniffing technique... beware the Cephalic phase insulin response! :-)
High LDL also helps with vascular disease, and you can increase this with athleticism, low body weight, high activity, or keto. Just make sure you are not inflamed, CVD is an inflammatory disease.

I do believe this was recorded in 2018. His views have changed since there was a really good research paper on fish oil was published. They are all pretty much rancid. Just eat the fish in its whole form.
You can buy cod liver oil in a bottle, which is usually much fresher than capsuled oils. You can simply taste if it's gone rancid, in fact. Perhaps Paul came to the same conclusion.
Capsules go rancid due to microbial proteins essentially rotting in the oil which is mostly kept and transported at room temp. Buy it in the bottles which is almost always refrigerated, it won’t be rancid. My doctor told me this back in 2013-14.
"Buy the cheap cuts of meat, with the fat still on." Man what store are you shopping at? The cheapest cuts of meat here are always the ones with the least amount of fat. Just a slab of tough, chewy, pure red, no fat, muscle. If I want any fat at all I have to pay $12 to $18 a pound.
