- With Apple Silicon Macs, you can restore macOS just like you can with iOS with Apple Configurator 2.app! I will show you how to boot your Apple Silicon M1 Mac Mini into DFU Mode so you can Restore macOS Big Sur or Monterey in under 10 minutes!

I will go over how to restore macOS on your new Apple Silicon Mac Mini. Your first line of defense for installing macOS on Apple Silicon should be macOS Recovery. But if for some reason you are having problems with that you can boot your Apple Silicon Mac with a Big Sur USB installer drive. I wrote an article covering all the changes to macOS Recovery here.

Order of that you should follow for reinstalling macOS on Apple Silicon.
1. macOS Recovery
2. System Recovery - (Will boot automatically if macOS Recovery is unavailable)
3. macOS Big Sur USB Installer Drive - (External boot for macOS Installers is enabled by default on Apple Silicon)
4. Apple Configurator 2 REVIVE option - This option will reinstall macOS Recovery (retains user data on the SSD hard drive)
5. Apple Configurator 2 RESTORE option - This option will Reinstall macOS Recovery, ERASE your SSD hard drive and reinstall macOS

This is awesome! I had to do this with the DTK. On the day I received the DTK, I tried to update Big Sur and the DTK froze. I used an old iMac (2012) with Catalina to reinstall the new of version of Big Sur using your exact procedures. This was a.couple of months ago and there was no step by step instructions back then (in the old days). It took me several days to get it right but then it worked exactly like you demonstrated! Apple instructions at that point said that the second Mac had to have Big Sur on it to do the installation but Catalina worked fine for me then. I am not sure if you need a Mac with Big Sur on it now for the second machine. Great video!
George, thanks for the comment! For sure, I was there trying to figure this all out when Apple released the DTK. I had to wait until the first M1 was released before I could finally release all the info that I had collected. The DTK is a neat little Mac :)

@@Mr.Macintosh Thanks ! But i am going to return it cause I tried many things to fix the “pink squares” error and the wireless mouse connection errors.. 3 different displays, 7 hdmi cables, erased and reinstalled big sur, updated to the big sur 11.2 beta... no fix.. do u have any ideas ?

Recovery mode on M1 Mac wouldn't work. Zero chance. Found this video, am now restoring the device thanks to a USB C cable and my M2 MacBook. Thank you so much for this video!!! Subscribed!!!

I have tried this about 6 times tonight on an M1 that had Montery installed on it. I need it to have Big Sur, because I work primarily in Pro Tools, which will work on Big Sur, but is not yet qualified for Montery. I keep getting this error. The operation couldn’t be completed. (AMRestoreErrorDomain error 9 - Failed to receive message from device, might be connection problem with USB host. (Communication error, possibly USB disconnection)) [AMRestoreErrorDomain - 0x9 (9)]

Hello Julio, the 2nd mac can be ANY Mac with Catalina 10.15.6 or newer and Apple Configurator 2 version 2.13.3.
that’s pretty dope (assuming you have a 2nd mac). 2 questions: 1) Can you only restore apple silicon macs? 2) Can your 2nd mac be wither intel or apple silicon?
NazmusLabs, I cut out so much information that will be for my deep dive video that will be about 30 min long! I go over all kinds of questions like this including what macs you can use, OS version requirements, downgrading Big Sur etc. (Coming soon). To answer you questions 1. Yes you can ONLY restore Apple M1 Macs. AC2 CAN work on T2 Macs 2018+ but it will only restore the bridgeOS software that runs the T2 security chip NOT the OS. 2 The second Mac can be ANY mac that can run 10.15.6 Catalina at a minimum.
@@Mr.Macintosh Are you sure ? Apple support told me that the 2nd Mac must be running Big Sur, and the apple configurator 2 failed to restore my m1 Mac mini. It gave a warning like 'this device must be updated'...Anyway I will try once again with the method you describe in this video cause I've nothing to lose anymore :)

Hi, @Mr. Macintosh thanks for your great videos. I still miss one topic. Have you tried to install MacOs on external thunderbolt drive? I have such configuration on iMac 2017 and it works perfect but for now I could not achieve the same on M1 mac mini. Installation starts but stops with error at various places, once even 2% before end. Do you have any idea how to resolve the problem? Thanks and regards
Rem, I have this video in queue. It's taken some time because installing big sur to an external drive and booting from it is so buggy right now! Long story short you need a USB-C or Thunderbolt drive. USB-A / thunderbolt 2 drives are not working correctly right now in 11.1!

Yes Janice but you need a USB-C or ThunderBolt 3 Drive. I will try to get this video out soon i have the basic layout now.
@@Mr.Macintosh I ended up buying the Hagibis hub and a WD Blue 3D NAND 1TB SSD - SATA III. I know some have had issues with hubs like these but so far it’s worked out great. Now Bluetooth signal is a different story. The last update was supposed to solve it but my Apple keyboard is not having it. Tested a different (non apple) keyboard and that works fine. 🤷🏼♀️

Every option failed for me. I tried 10 or so times. In the end restore and revive failed repeatedly but the erase option got to the reboot stage with a white/non orange light. My m1 mini was finally reset and ready to restore from carbon copy clone image. i was ready to give up and send it in for repair when that worked.

My mini’s been frozen fir like 2 hours now, on the macbook air it just says installing system (4 of 4). Is this normal?
Apple is continually making things HARDER AND HARDER. They are intentionally making it difficult for the average person to work on things themselves which is FRUSTRATING. I cannot even do a SIMPLE Hard Drive ERASE and Restore anymore. It has become SO COMPLICATED. THEN - if you have bot an Intel Mac and M1 Mac it's even more complicated. I have had nothing but problems trying to REINSTALL Various operating systems on my Intel Macs. I recently upgraded my M1 to Monterey and I want to go back to Big Sur BUT I am terrified that if I do, I will BRICK my machine. Watched all your videos but Nothing seems to work. I can't even install to an External Drive anymore. Apple has done SOMETHING to make things not work like they use to. I don't know what they did, but they did SOMETHING. I have downloaded installers for all OS's going back to very 10.5.8 so while I am not an expert I AM very familiar with restoring the Operating systems on Macs going back to 2007. I have been trying to Reinstall Big Sur on MULTIPLE External Hard Drives and the Installs keep failing for NO GOOD REASON. I think there is something related to the Installer Version and the Chip set (Intel versus M1) but I can't be certain. It's SO FRUSTRATING!

When I hold the power button and plug in the cord, no DFU mode on Apple Configurator. I tried several times. Only thing that changes is that the lights on the mini cycles through all the colors.

@@Mr.Macintosh thanks so much! Right after I wrote, I tried again 3 more times and it didn’t work. Then I went back and did “Disk Repair” on a disk image that was there and for some reason it worked. Thanks so much for making this video. It was a lifesaver. I live in southern Mexico and if it didn’t work that would have meant trying to get the machine to an Apple store 3000 miles away... literally.

Here's what I got on my M1pro 14" MBP, trying to restore from "UniversalMac_11.6_20G165_Restore.ipsw"; The System cannot be restored on this device. No applicable System images were provided. [ConfigurationUtilityKit.error - 0x263 (611)] I don't think it likes this macOS version...?
Hello P Lauer, the earliest macOS version that can be installed on your 14" is Monterey 12.0.1.
@@Mr.Macintosh - Still, the process is very cool and will be useful for older Macs. I suspected this so not really a surprise...os12.x wasn't playing nice with Sophos Endpoint and FDE, where it works pretty flawlessly in os11.x. Since this post, however, Sophos has essentially mirrored the policy from the Windows world for the macOS.
