    • @1992girlll
      @1992girlll 5 років тому +4

@@rikakemme it doesn't have to do with how good dubbing is. It has to do with how simulair the languages sound. Like for example French is a really fast language. If a French dubbing actor is dubbing in French and the Englisch actor is speaking in Englisch. The French actor might already be done with talking while the Englisch actor is still talking. And I don't understand it. Why dubbing if you can also put subtitles. I mean for children younger that 9 I get it. But they watch mostly cartoons and by cartoons it doesn't matter. But for older people. Why? I mean even for people with dyslexia you can do that.

The "how" on the smoking subject; my point of view as a Dutchie myself; I think it is the "live and let live" attitude we have here. If it ain't on someone's private property, you do as you please and it gets tolerated.
Although non smokers are silently disturbed by it, they won't speak out because you don't supose to tell others how to live their lives. And that is a non spoken rule in The Netherlands: "the live and let live"-rule.
We are known about given our opinions blunt to everyone but we will never point someone out about their lifestyle. That is considered rude and arrogant.
I know, it does not make sense for a foreigner... we do tell you right in your face how awful your haircut is but if you wish to blow smoke in our faces at the busstop, we suffer in silence..

Like in the Netherlands there are much regional differences. In Manhattan it is cheaper to eat outside than renting some extra space for a kitchen. And videos about american habits that are strange or weird to outsiders get a lot of comments like 'let them stay there' or 'i dont need them here'. Like, when you go out for dinner, be aware that they chare more than what's on the menu. You will have to tip 20% extra, otherwise the waitress can't feed her children, and they add acouple of % tax to the bill. But go there, it's beautiful, and people are very nice.

  • @rdevries3852
    @rdevries3852 5 років тому +2

Okay, so I copied this comment from another video I already posted it at that talked about subtitling as well, but it touches upon a point you made about how subtitling is probably why most of us speak a fair amount of English.
I'd say that the fact that we subtitle rather than dub over most of our tv shows and movies (also computer programs, video games, etc., though I think those are more commonly left in their original language in other parts of the world as well) contributes a great deal to Dutch multilingualism. Perhaps even more so than mandatory English classes in school in fact.
Which we of course also have.
I'm aware it does depend on the individual and I certainly know my share of Dutch people who really had to work on their English in school. English always came easily to me however, even though I'm certainly no language whiz. I did also take German and French throughout high school (or the Dutch equivalent thereof anyway) and had a mighty struggle with it. Just not so much with English. As a result, I can fairly say that I barely learned any English in school, since anything they were teaching in school, I already picked up from television, or movies, or (a bit later) the internet.
In fact, since it isn't just American television or movies that are broadcast in their original language, but also British ones and perhaps the occasional Australian show, or something of that ilk, us Dutchies might actually have a broader comprehension of English than a lot of, well... Americans. I have more than once, for example, found myself amused reading reviews by American viewers of British shows or movies, where the reviewer complained about the show/movie being hard to understand because of the British phrasing and accents, whereas I had no problem following it at all. For the record, I am Dutch born and raised, with two Dutch parents and four Dutch grandparents (I never knew any of my great-grandparents, but as far as I know they were also all Dutch) and have never even visited any English speaking territory.
Speaks volumes about the merits of subtitling, doesn't it?

Maddie Broderick there’s a lot of focus on prevention, but it’s more evidence based 5han in the us. The thing about all tests is, they have both a false negative rate and a false positive rate. Even a small false positive rate of 1% (that’s tiny, it’s often 10%) is a really big problem if, say, you’re testing a million people at large of a population of 21 year olds who you’re expecting to have the cancer maybe 0.01% of the time. Yes, you catch a hundred people with cancer slightly early - but you also catch 10.000 people who you have to tell they have cancer, but after multiple invasive further tests - each with their own medical risk! - you eventually determine don’t have cancer.
In most cases, you should only be testing people where you already suspect something is wrong. A test had to be really good in both false pos and neg rate *and* the population in question has to have a pretty high likelihood of having the problem for it to be a net gain to do mass testing. Hence why you don’t get mammograms - or prostate exams - starting at 16 (in either country).
The US has a general tendency to overtest. Or at least, that’s how the medical establishment over here sees it. One could speculate that with how much medical anything in the US costs (with large profits included), there’s a fairly major incentive to overtest.

As I am a bit older now, my parents give me 'kleedgeld' (monthly allowance for clothing) and I really got to learn the value of money. I think many people would like to buy a designer something, but just think it's to expensive in comparison to the satisfaction you get in return. Smoking is getting less and less i think because when i was a teen i started smoking because everybody did it...And then you become addicted to it..Smoking is an addiction. But back then (i am almost 44) it was the thing to do..It was cool. I quit smoking 4 years ago. So i do not (yet) mind the smoke on terrasjes because i get it. I get why people smoke. Also years ago you could smoke inside restaurants but now you can't anymore and you have to go outside..So in the winter everybody is fine with you standing outside but in the summer when you do sit outside (terrasje) then everybody screams bloody murder..I don't think that is ok..There should be space for smokers outside and non smokers and if you do not like it, go inside the restaurant it has been made smoke free for non smokers..Besides living in a big city like Amsterdam is not that healthy, air wise.
I went to a country last year Macedonie ( i think it is called something else now) and i am telling you if you hate the amount of people here you should see it in that country..Everybody smokes..even inside a restaurant, it is everywhere.
Why people (start to) smoke? Good question, i really do not know. But it becomes an addiction..
For me, i don't like alcohol (alcoholic mother)..I hate what it can do to people when they overuse the stuff. It is also unhealthy to drink alcohol but nobody cares about it. Some people can become such assholes when they drink or even very violent or very loud. Not my thing at all..Sure, you can drink a glass, but it is still not healthy to do that, even if it's "just" 1 glass. So that is for me the: I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY part.

  • @jeannetitor

let me put a few things into perspectives:
smoking is generally seen as a nuisance as well, so much to the point that smokers aren't allowed to smoke inside most (public) buildings/areas and ONLY outside or on specific smokers zones in open areas (you'll see these at the treinstation for example). this is why you'll see a lot of people flock together smoking, making it seem a lot of people smoke. this way smokers can finish each other off with mee-roken :) the silver lining to this is that it gives people reason to make some contact and time to socialise while smoking.
as for wearing brand things, you need to understand that within the netherlands, everyone is equal, and by that i really mean, EVERYONE is equal and you will indirectly learn that you don't have more value than somebody else does just because you have more money to spend. this is also why people are very casual, friendly, blunt, but accepting of/to everyone. this reflects back to their spending on clothing as well. this doesn't mean that people here aren't stylish or fashionable, but funnily enough, just like in most places of the world, people will buy brand things if it's heavily discounted, so people are definitely money-conscious of their spending. part of it is also seeing value in owning something, you'll definitely see a lot of people owning expensive smartphones for example, as it's now considered to be a crucial part of their daily lives.

I don't like it when people smoke, I've noticed that it has been getting less but it still happens.
Also you can overtake on the right if the other car signals that its going left.

The smoking is only in the large cities in my experience. When you get outside of said cities it changes and very little people smoke.

About the smoking: only in Amsterdam people smoke so much. In other cities it is different and most of the time you are not allowed to smoke in café's.

What was your first experience like, with the 4th of may 8 o'clock silence for remembering those fallen in war, throughout the whole of The Netherlands?
And concerning the smoking, having more people do it makes it harder to get rid off it. Politically and legally the manufacturer wins all the battles up until now. People really try to do something about it. On the street you life and let life as long as you can evade it.

In the Netherlands people with designer bags or designer clothes are usually not the best people to befriend or to hang out with.

In a previous video you mentioned that in the US people work a LOT more hours than here in Europe. One of the side effects of that is less possibilities and desire to acquire expensive goods when cheaper equivalents are available.
Also we don’t like to display our wealth (or lack thereof :).
You may have noticed that talking about income/wages here is a big taboo, where it seems to be openly discussed in the US.

Smoking is more normal because people start at a young age, because you can smoke while you're underage. besides that, you can smoke almost everywhere and yeah

Alright.. so my theory on the 'nice driving' has also to do with the way things are so well organized around here. There is actually not much choice but to drive according to the rules (although.. trust me.. there are still a LOT of A**holes and Sunday-drivers as well): We have no space to be disorganized! (haha imagine putting a family of 10 ppl in the cupboard underneath the stairs) Holland (like u said) is a very tiny country. And there are a LOT of people here (There's 500 ppl per square km).. if we want to keep things pleasant, we have to stick by the rules.. AND be tolerant towards each other.
I remember when (more than 20 years ago now) Holland was famous for its tolerance.. but that's faded big time now.. everyone is complaining about everything.. everyone's toes are so long that u can barely thread anywhere anymore (look @ intolerance towards smokers these days.. :) without someone complaining they feel offended.
Also.. the organization is not always a blessing. At times it can be very suffocating as well. I remember I went to Bali as well when I was young.. I was there for 3 months and another few months Australia.. when it was time for me to go home, I was quite alright.. It'd be nice to see all my friends and family again. But the minute we flew over Holland.. and I saw all the neat rows of houses.. perfectly organized with the neat little streets and a car parked by every house.. it just felt like a huge hand slowly squeezed all the breath out of me.. I got all choked up and started bawling my eyes out until I hyperventilated hahaha Panic attack
Trust me.. if this is what you've known for all your life.. it can feel like a true liberation to be somewhere where not everything is organized.. there is space and place for things to grow and be creative.
And yeah 2000€ for a name on a bag... lol.. it even sounds silly already!!

I understand the designer bag thing, but in The Netherlands we’re very careful with our money, and we do have designer outlet stores and designer stores in Amsterdam, but we’re not going to buy a bag for €500 of more, for us that is a waste of money, but some girls (also myself) do have some designer bags, so not all girls don’t have designer things x

Totally with you on the Smoking. I'm living in Hilversum by the way and I really dislike it when I'm always placed in the position like I'm moaning, for example when the weather is nice and it's nice to be outside at a restaurant or café and everybody is literally blowing smoke in my face! I can see that disappearing over the next decade, the trend is there already and I know it's gonna happen someday that smoking is seen as totally uncool. I was pleasantly surprised about this in Sweden, where literally nobody smokes any more.
