So I don't really see too many differences in all honestly between the A and the B like you can deff feel that the A has less power but when you go into a dogfight it doesn't really show itself there are certain situations where you can see the B start to dominate the A like for example in the rate fight but its an easy fix, just keep it 1 circle or change up the geometry of the fight when you see you're losing the rate fight. I think main "issue" in a dogfight situation with the A will be the compressor stalls but again you can train that out just keep the throttle monuments gentle and you should be fine. All in all, I like the added challenge of the A model. Thank you to Frosty for helping with the video and all of you for watching.

The “B” engine is more noticeably better when: loading is higher, AoA is higher (less stall risk), and at low speed maneuvering. Further, transition from one circle to two circle is quicker, which can make geometry changes easier. I’m surprised that a few high AoA pulls and some of those low speed vertical rate turns didn’t trigger a compressor stall.

What if you did a dogfight between an su-25 frogfoot and an a-10 thunderbolt.
I did and the A-10 is miles better, because the Su-25 can't turn worth a crap
I did ask him and he told me he does not have any plans for it as in his own words "its like seeing two turtles fight"
@@killeros4049 pretty much this, the a10 will out turn the su25 so the su25 can just run as its much faster than the a10, so u merge a-10 turns su25 keeps flying straight lol that’s not really a video worth making as soon the su25 tries to turn with the a-10 it dies. So it’s very obvs how it will play out.
i would also recommend a fox-2 fight, so no one can just fly away to get a big distance

A funny story, when the first F-14A+ (later called B) arrived in the squadron in 1989, as part of training with 'the big motors' they put Top Gun pilots in the F-14B and put an ACE pilot instructor in the F-14A with 30% less thrust handicap and the same airframe. The ACE pilot instructor in the F-14A completely cleaned the clock of the Top Gun guys flying the 'big motor' F-14A+ that it was not even funny. I guess, pilot makes the biggest difference.

I was in the video and he did have a human RIO. Id highly recommend the vid!
6:06 I believe when the inertial gyros gets disoriented on the F-14, as indicated by the misalignment of the artificial horizon with the actual horizon, the piper no longer gives the correct fire solution.
Great fight! I’m an F-14 nerd so fun fact.....I’m not sure if they incorporated this into DCS but the TF30’s had a great ram air effect at low altitude (under 10,000ft), where they made big power. Watch an interview with former F14 pilot Kieth “Okie” Nance. After a few air shows the F-14A engine mounts would be elongated instead of circular.
So basically in an A model take the fight low
I guess, the difference is not as big as many think. I found out something interesting that might explain it that the TF-030 being a bomber engine made to go just as fast as possible, loved to gobble up air. The "RAM air effect" really made the TF-030 produce more and more thrust with higher/denser airflow into those big intakes of the F-14. I think in thinner air up over 20,000+ feet the GE-F110 engines would truly dominate, but at below 20,000 feet in dense air, the difference is quite small. The gap tends to shrink as far as thrust-to-weight goes as the airspeed goes up. I think HB modelled that into the F-14 TF--030 in DCS.
It changed from one bomber engine to another. The GE F110 is a F101 engine core (from the B-1 bomber) with the intake and exhaust based on the GE F404 of the Hornet (obviously enlarged to fit the F101).
@@magoid Yeah same core design as F-101, but the GE-F110 engine was developed from the ground up as a fighter engine for both slow speed high angle of attck maneuverability and high thrust (28000 lbs thrust class). The TF-030 was not designed for high maneuverability at slow speeds. Now, GE-F110 has become the gold standard for fighter engines as it made its way into the F-16 and the F-15E Strike Eagle.
That's part of why the TF-30 allowed a barely higher top speed than the 110s.
@@DuraLexSedLex True. In 1973, they hit Mach 2.5 during F-14 stress test with the TF-30 at high altitude.
On the deck, there's still no faster US airplane than a TF30-powered F-111. When the 'Vaark drivers would encounter an Eagle at Red Flag or something, they just pointed the flamey end at them and left.
was trying them back to back with same loadout to compare performances. 2x Aim-9, 2x Aim-7, 2x Aim-54 and 2x 300Gal for both B and A, AB cut off at around 200kt for the A, no AB at takeoff for the B. Climbing between 2000-3500ft/min full military power... The A struggled at around 270-290kt during all the climb, while the B hit 430kt. There is a huge difference indeed.
The F-14A is a ton of fun. I don't feel handicapped when i'm in it. Just need more skins! Plus, I hope Jester, AIM-54 and AIM-7 get their fixes soon.

Hey man ya I’m running reshade only option checked off is “colourfulness” with the in game gamma set to 1.8. All other settings on max with the exception of depth of field which is set to none.

Hey GS, have you tried doing the prohibited configuration on F-14A like what Snort did with the F-18 pilot in 1v1? Basically using flaps in landing configuration and using the mid compression bypass selector to give additional thrust? Thanks :D

Great fight, very even until you got him into defensive mode. I think the F14A is helping you more to re-master the aircraft, since you have to be very mindful of what you're doing for not getting a stall, so you MUST be gentle no matter what with her.

Don't forget the F-14A+/B deleted the wing glove vanes which gave the F-14A the ability to pull 7G's at mach 2. Very few (if any) fighters can do that today.
Is it just me or is the HUD on the A model much smoother? The B model HUD is just awful. Considering that other aircraft which came out relatively around the same time as the Tom Cat but have much smoother HUDs, it's almost embarrassing for Grumman. The F-15 and F-16 all came out around relatively the same time but do not suffer from such an awful refresh rate.

Right which if true is a problem the whole point of the radar lock is so u can just put the thing on the thing and squeeze the thing. I shouldnt have to put the thing in front of the other thing to squeeze the thing to kill him. Seems there may be a bug in the f-14 gun sight

Just a headsup, there is currently a "bug" with too high drag at certain speeds in both cats awaiting the next update so you might wanna redo this fight once the next update comes out.
The people I've been bfm fighting with a lot have given me a lot of shit because of this bug, most of them want the f14 to stay this way. It also is under preforming compared to the em chart by quite a bit.

I used it with th lantern pod at low high and mid altitudes ccip and all hit as predicted with a marginal degree of pin point accuracy but the laser guidance it exact i could place ut directly on a manpads head if I wanted too

sorry guys im gonna sound completly stupid but when looking at the gameplay, I was wondering, is the deflection shooting completly manual or are there computers that align shots or a heads up display that tells the pilot where to shoot? I know my propeller aircraft a bit but know absolutly nothing of modern jet fighters so I would appreciate some knowledge
Hey man with these modern aircraft the radar locks the target and calculates the lead for you, so all u have to do is put the piper on the bandit and squeeze
like GS says, locking a target with radar will automatically move the crosshair to show exactly where you need to point. However, it's worth noting that the crosshair can't always keep up with a target that's maneuvering aggressively, and if the radar lock is lost, the HUD will fall back to a mode similar to the gyro sights that you'd see in old warbirds. In the F-14 specifically, the small unmoving cross in the center of the HUD shows you exactly where the gun is pointing, and the larger crosshair that moves around is an estimation of where the bullets will actually go.
There are lots of great videos out there that walk through the cockpits of DCS aircraft. Even if you don't play the game, there's a lot of interesting stuff to learn and maybe get some more insight into what's going on in these dogfights.
Would be nice to have the input graph visible in your videos. Would give a lot of insight on how you use the rudder and when you ease off on the stick, etc.

I was on Ike and worked V-2 on Catapults. There was a noticeable difference from our perspective but the F-14D was night and day better.
Fascinating to hear from someone who experienced the planes up close. Can you elaborate on the differences?

I have to elaborate. In 1989, we were just out of the shipyard Portsmouth (USA not England). The Ike had run into a Spanish coal ship as we finished up a very successful Med Cruise. The tugs were nearing IKE (we had just brought screws to -0- rotations when a microburst from a nearby developing thunderstorm hit us. All of this occurred at the worse possible moment. We had just lost steerage. The winds drove us toward the Coalier and to make matters worse, the coalier was taking up anchor from its bow. The position of the anchor was evidently below the Eisenhower. Between the microburst driving us toward the coalier and the coalier pulling itself toward the IKE.... well we collided (Very embarrassing and very costly for tax payers and some of our leaders). Unfortunately the Skipper who had just been frocked to Admiral, was demoted back to captain and sent to a college to run a NROTC program in semi retirement.
After months of repairs, we went back to sea preparing for a med cruise. Because our work ups were off the East Coast, the Navy used us as a platform to test several F-14 upgrades that were being developed. I believe they were the B and D model test platform. There were no other aircraft on Ike at that time.... It was confusing to me. The B model was often referred to as the A+ and the D model the B+. Or that was how they were described in our briefings.
Truthfully what ever the model, the new engines were very similar IF NOT the same on the B and D. The time period would have been 1989-1991.
The main difference, during testing, was the significant increase in power at mil settings. The noise and heat was significantly less to work around. Also, the test pilots would climbing at a steeper departure angle immediately after launch, still without using burner. A lot of A model launches would have the F-14 actually sink a little after launch as it gained speed for a climb on a hot humid day.
For me, (I’m sensitive to any visual changes, I’ve always been able to identify the silhouette of the majority of military and airline aircraft) the B and D’s had different shaped exhaust nozzles, you could easily see the difference between an A, B-D by looking at the rear of the aircraft.
We did launch the B/D using burners during the test program. It went like a bat out of hell.... the aircraft could go nearly vertical shortly after launch. I don’t recall if any of the test aircraft ever carried any additional fuel tanks or weapons....
I remember discussion with maintenance about the Jet Blast Deflectors taking damage with the B&D in burner, but I don’t know if that led to modifications on the deflectors or if the squadrons that came after I left used burners or mil. power at take off.
Sorry, I just can’t remember the details as I grow older....... so much is lost other than the first impression of massive increase in power and enjoying less noise and heat of the B/D’s over the A’s

From what I have read its still in development but they are working on it.
Dumb question - why fly the A if you have access to the B? Nostalgia?
Why flying WW2 aircrafts if you have modern jets ?
Keep in mind it was the A that made all the history and folks made movies about.
The B came along toward the end of the story.
Few reasons I can think of :
- for the challenge
- for the novelty / diversity
- to prepare for scenarios where you may be restricted to the F-14A only
- because that's the most famous variant
In short, plenty of reasons.

The time to reverse a turn is when you're certain you've caused an over shoot or at least pulled a scissors. If you were just flying for your life and you squirt out the goal should be to try and make it a rate fight, especially in the jet which has a superiority in the rate fight, correct?

@@robertimmink8487 Then you have to go to the dcs install folder on the command prompt by selecting the disk, then using cd to reach the bin folder, then typing: dcs_updater.exe update @openbeta. (I hope it's the correct command, I'm not on pc right now XD)

DCS is SIMULATOR. Mobile devices (beside gaming laptops) wont bring enough power to run this game in the next 20 years. Also you are unable to read anything on that little screen.

At lower altitudes, there really ISN'T much of a difference between the two variants (except for the compressor stall thing). The TF30s made excellent thrust below 10,000 feet.
