I really did not enjoy this fight lol, it was probably one of the hardest and longest fights I've done in DCS I'm just happy with the lucky kill, I'm sure those of you who are well versed in the F-14 in dogfighting could do much better than that I'm kind of interested in practicing again and once again taming the beast that is the Tomcat. I couldn't believe it when I saw this video in my feed! It actually brought a big smile on my face because just last week I commented on one of your videos asking for this video. I wasn't sure you would do it and don't know if you read my comment but anyways thanks for doing it. After watching so much videos on your channel about Mirage dogfighting the shit out of most aircrafts in DCS I also noticed you mention F 14 had the best turn rate (I think) so I really wanted to see this fight but I can see why you didn't wanna do it haha.

Lengthy comment of Tomcat wisdom from a mediocre sim pilot:
Not trying to backseat fly here, but I exclusively practiced in the F14 for two years now and all I can say is don't pull so much stick and use that rudder to counter the roll reverse (the wobble). Afterall, the tomcat can never respond like a normal aircraft because it doesn't have normal aircraft control surfaces. Rudder and Tailerons are both used for roll. When tailerons are being used as elevators in a turn, it becomes the rudder's job to stabilize the roll axis during the pitch maneuver.
The tomcat's strength is not in nose authority, it's purely in the engines. Extend. Take advantage of gravity in your turns. Vertical turns offer that better oblong shape and helps with the energy retention and in gaining AOA when pitching over the top. If you try to hold the cat in a high AOA turn for longer than 10 seconds without giving it any help (gravity assist) it will fight back, plain and simple. I personally don't pull more than half stick in most fights, except for in short bursts no longer than a few seconds when AOA is a must. If you keep descending in the turn and let off of high AOA every few seconds, the bird will respond positively and then you can begin to use it's thrust to gain angles in a rate fight. So let off the stick now and then, keep your opponent distant until you're on their six, get creative with energy (stay fast to avoid wobble), and stay patient man! Also, probably try to not stay in the rolling scissor too long, after 4 or 5 merges you should either throw out the flaps and slats or giver 'er the spurs and extend.

Yes I noticed side does not utilize the tactic of extending enough. When you are in a disadvantageous situation extend. The BMS pilot KVUSA77 perfectly demonstrates this in his dogfight video “A vertical rolling scissors”

@@Tstahl962 To be honest I would like some parts from the Mirage, for example one gun and the bullets and from the F14 the gun again and a couple of bullets. For a museum, the nozzle would be good as well as some parts from the cockpit
Hi Sidewinder. I think your issue with the F14 is you are trying to fly it like a modern fighter pulling high alpha as fast as you can. If you slow it down and be a little smoother and slower on the controls I think you will be surprised at what the Tomcat can do. The control surfaces are more efficient between 300-400 knots with wings between 20 and 45 degrees and so that is where you will be most nimble. Likewise if you look at her she is one massive wing which is why she has so much lift. Downside of that is if you pull high alpha then the body becomes a sail and speed brake. Use your mirrors as the wingsweep position will give you your speed and if you start getting contrails over your engine intakes you are pulling too hard. Fly it like a spit rather than the hornet and you will dominate! Have faith in the 14, she may take longer to learn and be less forgiving but she can beat any aircraft in DCS.

Yeah wanna a lame ass. Tomcat was my first plane in DCS World. I got into DCS thinking the community would be cool and appreciate planes like Tomcat and Mig-21, but instead just want to fly easy planes like Hornet and pretend to be flying. While at the same time complaining about getting owned by tomcat in dogfights because they just want to out turn Tomcat and not bother to learn the tactics.
Gotta use the high Pilot radar mode so you can lock him above the HUD when your pulling around into him, helps a ton I use it all the time when in any sort of circle fight

Out of curiosity, how does locking him up help you in a gun fight? WIthout the Fox 2s, what's the point? Edit: Duh....it tells you where to aim the gun!
@@OneShotStop229 HUD will indicate his position as you line up on him if you have him locked, so you won't lose visual as he crosses into the frame above the HUD. That and you'll have the gunsight computing the lead for you.

More verticality with the Tomcat against the Mirage, after a 1 circle Turn he can't follow the Tomcat and the 30mm shells should fall short. Easier said than done, but you did more of that in the second fight and created him a lot more problems.
Great stuff, keep practicing on the Tomcat, you get the hang of it really fast.
the f14 doesn’t respond well to being flown like a fly-by-wire, she’s an old style hydraulics aircraft and as such should be flown more like a war bird than a modern aircraft

@@shirothehero0609 the tomcat can rate fight and out run just about anything in dcs becuase of its superior thrust to weight ratio and lift. it also has proverse and inverse yaw not regulated by avionics unlike fly by wire craft. in those respects it flies much like a war bird and therefore, the knowledge of flying those aircraft can be applied here. for instance, the cat and can turn by using only its rudder (however i would not recommend this) and their use is typically needed to prevent the buffeting of wings like we saw in the video. and also smooth inputs of the stick are needed instead of jerky movements which are again regulated by fly by wire. he flew the tomcat in this fight like it was a hornet which is the opposite of what you should do

Use rudder to stay coordinated in turn instead of //sideslip->shake->fight reversal->induce oscilation// loop as Tomcat doesn't have FBW to automatically stay coordinated for you.
In this aerial battle, he repeated a makeshift maneuver without thinking about the situation ahead.

I must say I'm a bit disappointed GS, you started the fight with the wrong attitude right out of the gate and you were fighting as if you were flying The Mirage, not fighting the Mirage. Instead of fighting the Tomcat fight you started the merge at Mach 1 . . . . . you should start the merge WAY SLOWER and open your wings up turn on stability augmentation and fight the Tomcat fight. Remember if you stay at Mach 0.55 with your wings opened you can out turn that M-2000 no problem and put your nose on and waste him bro you had the completely wrong attitude from the get-go and the results showed it. Normally you are very professional and fight using the strengths of your fighter, not focusing on it's weakness. Maverick would be very disappointed in you. Would love to see you redo this fight keeping that in mind.

Hey man i love your work your one of the reasons I play dcs. However, your frustration with the plane is mainly you. I could count how many times you should have had him but I don't have enough hands. I main this plane and it surprisingly can match up to almost any plane in a dogfight.. i think if you spent some time learning her quirks you would be on top for almost all of that encounter... One thing she loves in a shudder when pointed down is rudder. Being a bigger plane means she needs more throttle as well but if you harness the shakes and hold her to the limits she will perform amazingly even as ugly as it is. She also a non computerized flight system.... its all raw which takes a bit to get used to but u prefer it. Hope you are doing well during the chaos of today's society. Take it easy.
I hope he reads this and takes it on board. Blaming the jet will only slow down the learning. In my opinion the Tomcat is one of the best dogfighters in DCS. Not the most stable of gun platforms but it has the performance to get into a good shooting position, and just ease the gun cross over the target. I found myself quite frustrated watching this video and watching him blame the aircraft when he's mishandling it. And despite that, he still managed to win the second fight, which is just a testamate to the performance that the Tomcat has in a dogfight. And to whoever stumbles upon this comment... just remember 0.65 mach for best sustained rate with an amazingly small radius. That combination of good rate with small radius is what makes the Tomcat so dangerous.

tomcat is not bad ... you just haven't flown it for a long time.more u fly more u remember as exactly how it happend from first round to round 2 :D . use those flaps and u will see how fast she turns... in first round u were not using th but at the end of second u saw with flaps just how quickly u were turning . use tomcat more. love the content :D ♡

What's amazing is in fight #2, you did what you did because you could. Likewise, the Tomcat did what it did because it could. The Viper, Hornet, Eagle and others can not do what you and the Cat did. It is an accomplishment, an impressive accomplishment.
The A4 has a tighter turn ratio than the M-2000C actually had. One second of respect for all those TOPGUN graduated pilots. Proving that is possible to kill wasps with a cannon.

BelsimTek did develop the F-4E Phantom II, but they stopped bc ED absorbed BelsimTek to help making their projects. so they terminated it to a unknown time.
Only as AI but the AI in dcs is realy realy bad. Also the 3d model of the Phantom is realy bad.

Just a question, the Tomcat seems very wobbly since the latest update. Would the Tomcat have the same challenge fighting the Mirage before the update? I've seen you fly against planes like the Hornet and Flanker but never noticed the instability of the Tomcat before. Care to explain?

No I love the VR dude I just don’t use it as much because I have a channel and I need higher resolution recording and stuff otherwise I would only be flying in vr it’s fantastic man if you can swing it money wise I think it’s a must

I saw 'Paco' Chierichi's interview who fought F-14A against Mirage 2000 quite often. He said, it all came down to surviving the first turn after the merge where the Mirage 2000 would pull extremely tightly, but with the delta wings it bled energy very quickly and once the pilot in the F-14 survived the first 9g turn, the tables would turn where the F-14 had the energy advantage both in the vertical, slow speed and in a turn-rate fight.
You tried your best! Could you have a BVR fight with Aré. You in a Hornet and Até in a Mirage. Would normally a unfair fight but with Até? Who knows what trick I'll come up to?

IRL fighter pilots are generally not allowed to do BVR or High Off-Boresight Fox 2 due to the tactics they have in muscle memory for that being classified. Ate is basically restricted to Guns and Fox 2s that aren't AIM-9X or R-73. I'm not even sure if he would be allowed to use the Vietnam War era AIM-7s on an F-4 Phantom if that module is ever completed. Actual fighter pilots if they play online or record footage (online or offline) have many restrictions they have to abide by that the rest of us don't have to worry about.

Hey GS, do you remember the Tomcat vs Mirage BVR fight we did? If possible, you should try to track down TAW_Savior (OldSaviour here on UA-cam) and do a BVR fight against his Mirage. He's much better at the tactic I was attempting, and I think it would make for great content. When I've flown against him, no matter what plane I fly he can get me with GUNS in a BVR fight. It's the craziest thing.
I always thought if you got used to the TOMCAT (Mover voice), you in particular would be pretty dangerous with it. You've said you prefer the rate fight and the thing is an absolutely vicious rate righter.

French air force Mirage 2000 crews are trained to deal with BVR threats. What you said is true in theory, but far from automatic IRL.
I've been waiting for this fight for ages man! Such different aircraft, I knew it would be very interesting fight. I feel your pain in the cat, I lost visual so many times. Excellent flying from both of you. The other thing I've always been curious about is the tomcat and viper in a rate fight. I've always heard both are really good but I've never seen them compete. But anyway, great video with two of my favourites. Love your vids, I've learnt loads from them and can't wait for the next.

GS, idk if it's modeled this way in the DCS F-14, but according to NATOPS disabling Roll SAS also disables automatic wing rock suppression.
Second battle was better than what Top Gun could even script. Hard fought! Better to be lucky than good as some say...NOT sayin GS isnt good...just that luck came in and he took it as ANY pilot would!
Buffeting and exceeding individual wing critical angle with 'wing down' input. Hence the oscillation. At low speed and high load, his input to raise each wing spoileron effectively stalls that wing and it reverses the input of what he wants. He corrects and does the same on the other wing and the previously stalled wing regains lift since its spoileron retracts. Id love to know the fuel burn for that fight. What did you end up with at the end @Growling Sidewinder?

At midth height- high altitude, the F14 doesn't work in dogfight with a great dogfighter like the Mirage 2000, JF17, F16 etc. ☹️☹️
Did they nerf the F-14? As far as nose authority. I could have sworn that someone once said the F14 was amazing in a rate fight, 2nd only to the F16. I know the real F14 can square the circle pretty well and has the thrust to gain the speed again (unlike the F18a-d).
It's really weird how unstable you found the F-14 to be. Why is that? I suppose maybe the F-14 was designed to engage with missles BVR, rather than a turning knife fight?
F-14 vs. A-4 next? A "how many tricks can the A-4 pull out of its sleeves before Kitty finally catches it" kind of thing. :)
The only thing I like more than Longshot disrespecting you is when he really pisses you off...especially if it is before he shoots you in the face...that would be a perfect trifecta for me!...but alas...no joy....still one of your best gunfights!...kudos
I know you're doing the guns-only fight for entertainment, however a smart Tomcat pilot wouldn't get into a gunfight with a much more nimble adversary like a Mirage if it could be avoided - the T-cat pilot would use a Phoenix or Sparrow and kill the Mirage before it could get a lock on them.
Should've inserted Top Gun Danger Zone music theme here. Nice flight but somehow I refuse to believe the Tomcat could always be in that inferior position against a Mirage.
Finally somebody acknowledged it... The visibility on the tomcat is awful. I rarely go mano a mano on multiplayer but if I do, I make sure I have good sight of the enemy aircaft before dogfighting. You did great because if the mirage had had a missile extending would not have been an option.

The Cat does NOT like huge aileron inputs with rudder inputs especially at slower velocities. That shaking is because your Cat is fighting not entering departured flight and going into a deadly flat spin. Lol. I just wonder if the real Tomcat behaved the same?
Im a bit new to jet dogfighting, but could he not just have done a stall fight in the first fight at the beginning? The mirage was low on energy and would have stalled out far sooner, coming back on him and getting the kill could have been easy. Or am i wrong? Im more used to war bird dog fighting. Edit: second fight as well! Also fantastic video! Love the mirage dog fights, really interesting fighter!

If this was real life I would have sooooooooooo many questions like why is America 🇺🇸 and France 🇫🇷 fighting each other if they are allies but this is just a game so its ok
I hope the families whose house your F14 crashed on top of after you ejected are ok. You probably should check in with them... maybe send a basket of flowers or something :D

I assume, had F-14 been updated further rather than funding being capped, a new single piece windshield, similar to the one in Hornet, would probably be one of the first things to happen.
