Fixing GM Capless Fuel Filler

My capless fuel lid broke during winter. Now that it's warm, I will attempt to fix it.
This is a really bad design by GM. GM needs to do a recall to fix this problem! First, anyone can steal fuel or add chemicals to damage your vehicle anytime because it doesn't lock. Second, water and debris can get in the fuel system. And Third, why do I have to buy aftermarket fuel caps to protect my vehicle?

I watched your video twice then went out and fixed the cap on my 2018 Silverado. Thanks for putting out your video!!!!
***** UPDATE*****
THE HUBCAP SIZE IS 2.567-IN.. Not 1.75 like I said in the video.
A month after I fixed the capless filler flap, it fell off again!! I reinstall the flap on same way I did in this video. This time I use super glue to glue the center of the bar to the cap. Do not super glue the left or right and of the bar, just in the center only. I haven't had any problem with that flat falling off since then.
Thank you for the video. Got mine back on. Once I clipped one side, I used a razor knife on the plastic lid to snap the other side. Could hear it snap into place. Much more careful fueling my truck.
That is almost the same story I have. Went to car wash and between flaps was frozen. I used hot water from the gas station to melt ice but top flap had already broken loose. Thank you for the video of how to repair.
Glad to help you out. Have a blessed day.
They are absolutely terrible. after a recent rain I opened the fuel door and observed water pooled on top of the trap door. I had to blot it out with a dry paper towel trying not to push against the trap door. There is no telling how much water has penetrated the trap door.
Thank you for the advice I have the same problem I’ve been using a rubber expansion plug instead it has worked great for me
There is a very simple solution to that. All you have to do is get a rubber ball hitch cover or a can that is 2 5/8 inches in diameter and simply cover the gas entrance. Now you won't have any water getting to it.
Yes. I bought a 2.56 wheel bearing hub cap. It works just as good. The problem was that that first lid of the cover fell off, and I had to find a way to put it back.
Yes thank you for this. It happened to my traverse cause it got stuck while pumping gas. Places tell you the entire assembly has to be replaced and that part cost 300 and then labor
Ridiculous design by GM.
Same thing happened to me -10F at the time. Tough time
Thank you for posting this. I had no idea how to fix this issue.
You're welcome!
Thanks! Just a got a 2023 Corvette and it popped off before even driving as it’s winter here. With 2 days of persistence and frustration and was able to fix it! For now…..
Awesome! If you get a chance, super glue the middle of the little bar so it won't come off again.
Just did this today after watching your video. Used the same tools, took a few tries to get it right but it works for now
That's awesome. I would recommend you super gluing the middle of the little bar so it won't come off again.
Thanks for the video. This just happened today and I was able to fix it. It is so sad that this is a problem.
Glad I can help you out! Keep trucking! Lol
Great video! I was able to fix mine too after buying those same tools for $10. Thank you!
You're welcome! I also find it helpful to make sure it doesn't come off again by super glueing that little bar to the two clips of the lip. Make sure you don't glue the ends of the little bar.
@@VDXOutdoors Ah, so that bar will rotate if you can fix the clip to the bar (so long as you don’t glue the bar ends and accidentally fix the bar itself)? If it comes off again I may try that. Was also trying to come up with a way to further clamp the clips back tighter once back in the bar but obv tight quarters in there. Anyway, your video gave me the confidence that reattaching it could be done and with some persistence, it’s def true.
@@willreutzel7462 Yes, you can super glue the center of the little bar to the clips of the lip. Mine came off again because I had bent the two clips of the flap outward too much. I had to redo it again. This time I glued it on at the center of the little bar and it worked. The little bar is loose on the ends to rotate up and down. Glueing the middle doesn't affect the flap. Good luck!
@@VDXOutdoors i have a question so if your lid looks like that it would affect your gas mileage
@@marcusgalaviz9492 It doesn't affect your gas mileage because the top lid is to prevent debris from getting in. The second lid (underneath the top lid) is supposed to maintain fuel pressure.
I would have been swearing 30 seconds in. Good job!
Awesome VDX👍🏾🔔《☆》I've been a Mopar guy since 1973. I'm looking at buying a 2019 V6 Camaro. I think it has the Capless BrainFart. Good Fix Brother✌😎☮
Nice job, patience good.I need to buy a filler tube.Good idea with hub cover.Run a small bead of silicon around inside?
Thanks for the help! I also had a block of ice in the filler from the carwash. Trying to insert the fuel nozzle caused the flap to come off the bar. This is a stupid solution looking for a problem. We'll never know why a $10 cap wasn't good enough for GM.
I totally agree!
So far mine is working I just don't like it not covered. So I'm gonna try some of the suggestions so it will be covered.
Thanks this is very helpful.
I’m f’d we just had all this snow and my capless fuel door is iced in. Might take a heat gun to it idk what else to do
Use I pick or sharp screw driver to break the ice. Use a shop vacuum to suck out the ice pieces. Don't poke too hard to break the seals of the flaps.
Thanks for the tip. What do you do if the inner flap isn't getting a good seal and causing the check engine light to come on?
Not sure. Try to make sure the rubber seal around the inner flap is not ripped or has debris on it. It's poor design
My flap is not returning all the way back. Gm wants $700 for the repair. The tech says the spring is not working anymore. Any chance how to fix or clean the spring?
The spring should be ok. You have to push the spring down before putting the flap over it.
If the spring is weak, try to stretch/open the spring to strengthen it.
This is what happened to my 2022 Caddy crazy design 🤷♂️! Where is the recall from government ? Chevy will not do anything until they get lots of complaints !
also- do you have the link or part number for the aftermarket piece for the outer flap?
Sorry, I don't. I asked the dealership, they recommended replacing the whole nozzle.
I did the same thing except the last step which is the two left and right the bar I tried but it won’t :) GMC SIERRA
What I did was clip one side first, then force the other side in. After that, superglue the center.
Thank youuuuuu!!!!!! 🙌🙌🙌
I had exactly the same problem yesterday during 20° weather. Ice und the top flap blocked being able to gas up. I was picking ice out with my pinky finger and that’s all it took to dislodge the top flap. The top flap is supposed to keep water and dust out but obviously it doesn’t work or ice wouldn’t be under it. That means in warm weather water is going into your gas tank. Some idiot designed this gizmo.
Great video and yes a bad design
Mine is broken, from the ice getting inside and I was not able to get gas. Now I haft find out how to fix the flapper part cause it still gets rain in it so I’ll put a cap over it but my check engine light won’t go off now because the flapper won’t close all the way it is a poor design
To prevent water getting into your fuel filler, buy a trailer wheel bearing cap that is 2.567 inch from your local auto parts store and place over the hole. That will prevent water getting in there.
If your check engine light is on, check the inner flap to make sure it's closed tightly. The outer flap is to prevent debris and water to get in there.... Which doesn't work. If the inner flap is sealed tight and close tight, clear your check engine light with OBD2 scanner.
Ford has been using capless fillers since 2008 and are a better design
I think so a fortune 500 company like GM can come up with a better design. If they pay me, I'll design a better fuel cap. Lol
Who can help me to put it back ? I live in Orange County ca
Ask a mechanical friend. I have asked a dealership, they would just replace the whole nozzles a cost.
I found it absolutely impossible to get it to reattach to the bar.
You have to balance the circular flap with your left two fingers and use the bent tool to push up to the bar. Once it's in the bar, I found it helpful to super glue it together (so it won't come off again)
Great Video, but it's impossible to get it on the bar. Maybe, if the clips are already bend. This Capless fuel filler is a such a poor design, completely useless and a pain in the... I really tried it hard to fix it on a Cadillac XT4, gave up and took it to the Dealership.
Anyway thx for the Video!
@@niederbayer3152 I totally agree with you. The worst design for a fuel cap. A fortune 500 company that pays their engineers top salary... and this is what they came up with!?
Dealership will replace the whole pipe down to the fuel tank. At least that's what my dealer said. Good luck.
@@niederbayer3152 my gas cap looks like his too and i feel like it’s affecting my car mileage my dashboard tells me how much miles i have but now its now reading in accurate i hope thats why my car is doing that ill put 150 miles in my tank and its jumping from 150 to 149,146, back to 150 but i wonder if it’s because of the lid being not on because of the pressure
Frustrating, my spring is not pushing on the flap like yours my spring is not cooperating
You may have squeezed the clip on the flap a bit tighter so it'll clip on the spring.
