The NEW M1 MacBooks - Can You Use Two External Displays?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 лис 2020
- Apple officially states that the current M1 range of MacBooks do not work with two external displays, but I thought I would test anyway.
The two displays in this video are 2K resolution and are connected via HDMI adapters to firstly my 2017 MacBook Pro which works, and the 2020 M1 MacBook Air which does not.

I'm really sorry I don't know why I said that, great update video
Your spoiler alert made me watch the whole video.😁🙌
I actually got it to work! Video on my channel
Me too! I love it when they’re sincere and don’t try to make us watch the whole video out of curiosity.
@ 🙌
I love how you're creating a bunch of mac m1 related content, I think you're following the right trends and answering real questions. Big ups
Man I love your videos, especially the no BS "You can close the video right now: it doesn't work". Thanks for all of your great content on the latest Macs!
You’re making videos on questions I actually want answered
Thank you! I even talked to a specialist over at Apple cause I needed to know, cause I might get one, and he didn’t even know what he was talking about.
Same
You can buy Docking station. Can connect to two monitor Search Amazon I got Dell Docking station for M1 Pro
wow this is insane. I can’t believe Apple did this. Why doesn’t every tech reviewer give this disclaimer first thing in the video?
I got an M1 from my company and I don't even use it, I just use my 16". The M1s only have 2 USB ports as well, it's bullshit.
@@violet-trash but the m1 outperforms 16”MacBookpro😉
@@drbass9677 it doesn’t🤦♂️🤦♂️
@@oozly9291 it does 😂 look at the geek bench 5 scores. Also reviewers have compared the two and the m1 MacBook Air is faster.
@@drbass9677 your telling me that M1 pro 16 is worse?
I remember this being my first video I ever saw from your channel and I haven’t stopped watching it! Short and Simple which i appreciate the most as other channels jam all these test in a long 20-30 minute video, with the conclusion all the way at the end. Thanks for your honesty and clarity in every video!
Big thumbs up for getting straight to the point. Thanks!
Fantastic!!! Such a perfect video, I love that you gave the spoiler early on and then demonstrated it so well. Also love how you have your setup listed incase we want to purchase...wish more videos followed this formula. Glad I searched this before upgrading my older Macbook Pro. Thank you 1000 times!
12K subs!! Nice job! Keep the great vids coming, but make sure to get some sleep.
These have been such a great series of videos. Thank you for putting in the time to make them. Have you experienced a performance hit with the external monitor plugged in?
Finally someone who is on-point and don't force viewers to watch the whole 10 minutes video
As per usual you are out here making quality video responses to the REAL questions we all have!! Bless 🙌🏼
Thank you! I was having this same exact problem and was losing my mind. Glad I'm not the only one
I had been hearing a lot of rumor on this issue, glad that you clarified it perfectly with demonstration. May your tribe grow!!!
Thank you, subbed. Been asking around for this one. You've answered it.
Thanks for showing this. 👍
Yeah both M1 MacBooks are definitely a no go for me then, need them to work with minimum 2 external 4k screens at 60Hz to be a viable solution. Three 4k screens would be even better to future proof it a bit. Just wait for next gen then, bummer 🤔
dude you were at 10.8k subs yesterday morning, and now it's 12.1k, great job! loving the vids!
You earned a subscribe from me because you actually answer questions posted by your audience. Keep it up!
perfect test video ! I was looking for this information all day
Thanks for the spoiler alert! I really appreciate when you say at the beginning what's the outcome so I know if I'm interested in watching!
I think an ultrawide monitor would be the safest bet if you want more screen real state with the new M1 Macbooks, awesome straight to the point video!
Thankyou so much!! You're making it to the point. subbed!
You are consistent AF🔥
This is literally the issue I am thinking about. Thanks man.
Great content on the M1s would it run an Ultra Wide display? If so, to what size/res?
i am currently using a USB displaylink adapter to run a second external display. its not perfect but it is far far better than just having one display.
Thanks for this. If you have a compatible iPad, can you have an external monitor and Sidecar running as a third display as well?
Thanks for the heads up!...Keep the helpful video's coming!
Some tricks to do when I buy it. Thank you for the tips!
Hey,
if I close the lid of the MacBook, can I then use two monitors without any additional software?
This is exactly what I wanted to know. Too bad it doesn't work. The displaylink workaround is a no-go for me. Thanks a lot for doing the test and uploading!!
As additional Info: Sidecar with an iPad Workshop beside Connecting a second Screen.
Strange limitation. A Surface Pro X running a Qualcomm chip can connect to two 4K 60 Hz screens in addition to the internal screen. The M1 GPU has more performance but it can only do one 4K 60 screen. It might not be a GPU issue but a motherboard design limitation, the Macbook Air probably runs DisplayPort 1.2 over alternate mode.
Thanks mate. Subscribed 👍🏻
damn, i like how short and straight to the point this video is. i'm actually going to subscribe just for you doing that ahaha, thank you. cheers
great to the point content
31.4k subs on 3rd december 2020. I think this channel is gonna blow up.
I love your Mac related content!
Love you mate and your vids keep it up!!
Thanks for the important heads up when connecting my m1 Mac mini!
I just saw a video showing someone with 5 external displays using the macbook air. This is achieved using DisplayPort adapters and DisplayLink software to drive the additional displays. When the M1 Mac's ports have been filled, DisplayPort adapters have to be connected via an external dock to provide more ports.
When you plug in the monitor, can you still use the other portfolio data? Also, if it does work, do you still get the full 40gbs
Thanks for the video. What is your name? I was wondering if you attach external HDD or SD card, do you still need to safely eject or just unplug like you did in the video? With intel Macs you can cause data loss AFAIK.
Thx. for the video. So did you figure out how to use M1 Macair and make them work with dual monitors?
You are the fastest person making videos on M1 laptops right now! good job. Can you do a video showing UX Design tools on the base model Macbook Air? Thanks
Perfect, thank you!
Keep the great videos coming!
Good thing I’m on ultra wide :)) just picked up a 38 inch and love it so much
Watching your vids about M1 in this few days and noticed your subscribe has increase about 2k per day
straight to the point. i like it
Hey! I was wondering how you got the two external displays to the MacBook Pro? I recently purchased a MacBook Pro m1 13-inch and have two external monitors but cannot seem to get two displays connected?
great tips, will use them when i get one
hmmm..interesting i have few ques though
1)are both of them 4k 60hz monitor? if so ,can u lower the resolution to around 1080p then plug cable.
2)cant u use both monitors by switching off the laptop display?
I just bought a 13” MacBook Pro in July and, luckily for me, not having dual monitors is a deal breaker. Otherwise the M1 MacBook Pros are clearly superior unless we find some type of fatal flaw with the chip.
Hey, thank you for this video. One question. Is it possible to put the second display on a vertical mode?
How about using thunderbolt Dock which supports two external display? Will it work?
U just answered all my questions and made by purchase this!
Good stuff my friend!
Hi Created Labs! I have an external display related question for the M1 MacBook Air...... Since 2x external displays do not work, would the M1 Air work well with 1x ultra-wide (e.g. 49" 5K) external monitor? I've seen another video where a 5K ultra-wide seemed to work fine (correct resolution) with an M1 MacBook Pro, when using an 8K USB-C to PD cable connected directly to one of the thunderbolt ports on the Pro. But would an M1 Air perform well with an ultra-wide? And furthermore, how does the M1 Air perform when connected to an ultra-wide through a (reputable) USB-C hub/dock? With only 2x ports on the Air, a hub/dock is likely a necessity in order to charge the battery while simultaneously connecting an external monitor, hard drives, ethernet and other wired connections. So if the ultra-wide does work well on the M1 through a hub/dock, then that would be awesome! It's so nice to be able to stretch the timeline out when editing videos, or just to have multiple windows side by side (without the side frames of dual monitors in the middle of your field of vision). Super fantastic channel btw! Instant subscriber. Went into a rabbit hole with your videos today 😅
Does the MacBook struggle to sustain the monitors? What do you think of daily use long term? Thx
Short and sweet!
I do hesitate to rely on hardware hacks though - I'd ask whether this works with all Macbook Pro M1s, or with all monitors, or with all adapters, or with all operating systems, etc., and I'd ask how well it works in terms of image quality, etc.
I'd want to know more about how and why this setup works on the Macbook Pro M1 before making any purchases.
Thanks for this short video. Do you think that this could be „fixed“ or changed with an software update?
It is possible now with display link adapter
Another video content that helps and gives real info about macs
Ya that was my question too thanks for answering it🔥
Any chance this will work with two monitors if they are a lower resolution (e.g., 1080p)?
Very interesting. Can you use simultaneously an external screen in USB C/Thunderbolt AND an Ipad Air (or pro) with Sidecar? (3 screen) ? Is it possible ?
Thanks for the quick test. Personally not an issue for me. Great work!
I am able to run two of the older Thunderbolt displays, along with the monitor built into my MacBook Pro, for a total of three displays.Works great!
MacBooks or MacMini which one do you recommend if we had to dock it majority of time? Does Macbook's battery degrade faster if we keep it docked and use it with external monitor most of time?
Apparently if you have a hub that used display port multi stream you can connect two, but only in mirrored mode. I’m still waiting for mine to arrive to test this myself though
Oh man, wanted to use the MacBook Air for dual monitor. but thanks Liam!! more videos please!
Is there performance drop when you use external monitor. Not for export or render, but just animation and multitasking displaying more real estate?
What are those monitors that your using? Very curious since im looking to buy one that's 2K
Will the laptop be very hot when using external monitor? Many people complained this issue with pre-M1 Macbook.
this is awesome, needed this answered, great video... (and ugh, do i return the macbook m1???)
Would this work if I used two 1080p monitors at 120hz (M1 chip)? I have a thunderbolt 3 dock which has two DisplayPort out's to plug into the two monitors. Please let me know. Technically there is enough bandwidth given the lower than 2k/4k resolution so I am assuming it will work but I'd love to hear any input possible on this.
I saw somebody having trouble with clamshell mode on a m1 air, the monitor turning off and devices disconnecting as the Mac just went to unresponsive sleep like nothing was connected - most of the time. It seemed odd to me, maybe something you cold test out
Short, to the point. Great!
What is the model number of those displays? They look awesome!
Thanks. I have a M1 MacBook Pro and trying to connect dual displays unsuccessfully. What adapter do I need lightening bolt USB-C? to connect both displays?
That's what I needed to know!
What if you attempt to use 2 displays with the laptop lid closed (meaning the built-in screen is off) - would you be able to use 2 external screens then?
Now if you close the mac, do you get to have the macbooks display on the other external monitor
Would the 2 external displays work if you closed the macbook? Thank you for the vid.
You can have 6 external displays with it, just use any DisplayLink dongle, right?
A short hint: I use an old AppleTV 1080p to connect using Screen Mirroring as a separate display using Air Display (wireless) for a second monitor and it works fantastic. I do have also an Apple router. I do have now 3 separate screens as I had on my old MacBook Pro.
Right now you can get the 2021 4K 64GB Apple TV for $100, or 32GB for $80 on Amazon.
Damn that is genius
@Adamo There was no lag for me. Do not forget to use the cables I've mentioned. These are not "normal" cables as performances and ... price :D
Thanks for the heads up bro at the beginning of the video ( no sarcasm). Have a good one chief ! 💪🏽
Could you do a review testing the M1 for architecture software such as Sketchup, Revit and Vray?
well done for getting to the point fast
But a displaylink docking station should still work? I have one which enables up to three 4K monitors with 2 @60hz the problem is they don't scale properly in MacOs (fine with Windows 10)
What kind of adapter did you use? I’m switching from dell to MacBook and have a vga to hdmi
Can you close the MacBook Air M1 connected to the external display while the screen is still displayed?
I have an M1 and I’m using two external monitors with out a problem one is connected directly to the HDMI and the other is a usbc dongle with a hdmi connection. With my Mac book pro M1 and the other monitors I have 3 working monitors
great content man...
is the 65w GaN charger from ugreen is compatible with M1 Macbook air? will it fasten the charging time ?
What about with the macbook's lid closed? Can you get it to run two displays if you don't use the integrated display?
Hi, ist the macbook pro m1 working fine in this 4k monitors? since i've seen it only supports 1.680x1.050 as top resolution
Hi, thanks for the video. What about if i turned off the mac air's screen? ie closing the lid. will i be able to power two screens / monitors that way?
Very good set up
I'm sorry if I missed this, but can you please confirm that the Macbook Pro with the M1 chip DOES work with dual external monitors? I purchase the Air and am sorely disappointed in it's lack of functionality on this front. Will definitely upgrade to the Pro if that means I can use both monitors.
