- This week's podcast includes updates on finished and in-process projects, what I travel with knitting-wise, and my journey to understanding and predicting needle size for getting the correct gauge, as well as observations on what can cause that prediction to be wrong.

I can't even begin to tell you how much I've learned from your videos! You are a real gem in the knitting community~
Absolutely fascinating-as an experienced knitter who has read many of the books, this was a completely new perspective for me. And I appreciated the history, I sometimes teach knitting and that was eye opening. You are a great educator, thank you for contributing.
Fascinating. Every day’s a school day. 🙏🏻❤️
If it were economical it would be nice to have a yarn shop IN the airport! Imagine the business they could do!
As you were talking about the stretchiness of the chainette yarn, I was reminded of sewing patterns. They sometimes specify that the pattern is sized for fabric that stretches from, say, 4" to 6". Too bad yarn companies can't add a little education on the label for the novelty yarns. I will be checking the stretchiness of my yarn from now on.
I'd love to see how you do your i cord finishing to the blanket, maybe in a technique tuesday? I'm coming to the end of a blanket project and have had the idea to do the same I cord finishing since starting it, but I'm not really sure how to achieve it.
I too like to knit when I travel BUT it’s important to consider potential hazards. The thieves who broke into our car took my bag containing a 2/3 complete sweater back. Ouch! Mittens & socks from now on.
Good tips. I'm always a little distracted trying to read the titles of all those knitting books behind you. Perhaps some Casual Friday, you would share with us what some of your favourites are.
Me too!
Mary Algar Yeah, me too! I was looking at the Aran Knitting Book during this podcast. I find that term very confusing. Is it a type of knitting, is it a yarn weight, is it a color or is it all 3 lol!
All good questions. I could be out to lunch, but when I hear Aran Knits, I think of what my mother called Fishermen's Knits. Hopefully Roxanne will show us a few of her books. @@theastewart6721
Mary Algar That would be great!
I just discovered that Roxanne talked about her books in a past video. Check this one out: ua-cam.com/video/NP6VzDQQqeg/v-deo.html

Very helpful and informative podcast. Thanks for sharing all of your insight with us!
I do the same thing: pack my knitting bag first and I always look up and visit a yarn shop when I'm traveling.😊
Great knowledge on different yarn construction and designers varies needle necessary to complete project
I like to go on bicycle-camping tours. So my luggage has to be light and compact. Still I can take a knitting project with me! A circular needle with some 'mindless' knitting around works very well when sitting near your tent after a long day of bicycle riding!
Thanks for another wonderful video, particularly the discourse on gauge - sooo interesting. Now I understand something that's been puzzling me for yonks. Thank you!
I’ve been wondering what the yellow object on top of the shelf is. It looks like a hat but it seems to be rigid. Hm puzzling... Your descriptions of your experiences are delightful! Thank you.
I think it's a notions pouch just sitting further back on the shelf
Thank you for this very valuable information! God bless you!
I enjoyed your comments on gauge. I haven’t knit a sweater yet, but would like to sometime. My first will be the baby top down raglan, of course.🤗
Hi, Roxanne. You are the greatest. I'm hoping you can help me with a problem. I've been knitting for over 30 years, but I'll admit you've taught me a lot in just the last year. I'm relatively new to stranded colorwork. The ribbing on my last two sweaters is flipping up, not rolling, but flipping at the top of the ribbing. One is knitted bottom up and the other top down. I have a two rows of stockinette just above the ribbing and then a 7-row pattern of colorwork. My floats are not too tight and I don't knit tight. I'm usually pretty much on gauge. One is 100% acrylic, the other is 25% mohair, 75% acrylic. I'm using US#5 needles and the yarn is a fingering weight held double. If you have any suggestions, I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks.
This is a great question to ask in the Rox Rocks group. Other people will be able to pipe in with their suggestions, as well as to learn from the answers. :-)
Thanks for explaining some of the mysteries of gauge. I'd love to learn more about why some yarns stretch a lot during blocking and the garment won't return to it's original pre-blocking measurements. I guess this is why some pattern designers specify blocking gauge swatches; I'm one of the impatient ones who hates wasting time on this...
...until you discover how much time you wasted knitting a project that stretches out! :-) You never really know what the fabric is going to be like, until you wash that swatch!
I think I’ve learned my lesson, but am still interested in knowing what causes some yarns to stretch while others will hold their shape.
Hi Roxanne, I'm glad you talked about gauge swatch. I just did a swatch for a sweater that called for 18sts and 24 round / 4" on a size 8. The first one I did I had 19sts so I went up a needle size but the second swatch I got 17sts. So I decided on the recommended needles. Do you have any suggestions for me?
Wash and block your swatches, to see if that affects the size. Also, did you swatch in the round (or do a fake in-the-round swatch)? It's unusual to end up with a change of 2 sts over 4'' with one needle size change. Did you use the same type of needles, or were they different materials? Did you measure a full 4'' (away from the edges)?

Жаль, что не на русском...
