Thinking about it. They kinda said he would die in the cutscene before the mission. Aloy says to varl to "protect beta at all costs" and varl says "with my life" so he literally did protect her until his death then beta was taken.
There was a ton of foreshadowing I think. Especially with him bring up Rost to Aloy, her hallucinating Rost over Varl, and also the beard at the beginning.
@@theexurian1079 also I bought an armor that looks exactly like varls armor very early on, and it planted a seed in my head that Varl would die.
Zero dawn was a childhood favorite back in the day, and I loved all the characters. (Cough except ted faro) but seeing Varl die instantly brought tears to my eyes.

This whole time I was just under the assumption that she was aiming for Erik but knowing he would only retaliate/instant kill her immediately thus failing their entire mission + further endangering Beta, she had to pull back as much as she didn’t want them to take her too basically fighting an already lost battle at that point /:

I I too thought erend would die, the whole play through I was telling myself “someone’s going to die please no” and they just…kill varl…an OG…right there. I was supposed to go to sleep at the time when he was killed but I was filled with rage I wanted to kill EVERY ZENITH so I stayed up till 4:00 am to finish

I had a sneaking suspicion the whole game that somebody was gonna die. Not aloy obviously but it was between Varl and Erend. I even remember at the beginning when Varl tags along being kind of annoyed that he was there for whatever reason. Guess it was weird having somebody along that much early on after Aloy being alone the whole last game. I was kicking myself after he died
Damn I thought this scene was emotional and was a good story moment but this comment section seems to hate it.
Personally I like how they build Varl up as someone who pushes to help Alloy no matter how much she shuts him out. Then when Varl faces the Zeniths (an enemy he knew he couldn’t beat) he didn’t run or panic, he stood his ground and did what he could to fight them. I wish the fight was a bit longer but it still highlighted Varl’s character of helping his friends no matter what. I feel his death was the final push for Alloy to stop pushing people away and accept her team. Varl had been trying to help her the whole game but even though she accepted their help she still sidelined them to the base and only brought them along by Gaia’s insistence. After losing Varl Alloy let’s the others in and shares this moment with Zo and there’s the optional moment to drink with Erend. Anyway personally I loved this game’s story as much as the first and felt this scene was good

Yeah that's not the whole issue really working over the fact the only black man on the team was killed unceremoniously. It's a ongoing systematic issue of story telling and representation.
@@ddogvtae9142 I don’t think they killed him because he was the black guy. They killed him because he was the closest person to Alloy in the story and the one that kept pushing her to accept help. If they did it because of race then Zo would’ve died too. Besides I don’t feel it was unceremonious, his death was the turning point in the story and impacted the team.

After this scene I went straight to a Tenakth face painter and got the Nora Death Seeker paint applied.
Given how Varl got Aloy to open up about how much Rost meant to her and how she realised how much Varl meant to her, I felt it was incredibly appropriate.
I got the brave mark just like Varl

I think that Erend would look good in the role of Alloy's boyfriend. They are similar in character, love battles and both look like representatives of the Viking people.
It seems to me that in the third part, Guerilla games will kill a lot of characters. Sylens will leave the people of Earth to get all the knowledge from Nemesis, and will take her side.
Alloy will train his sister For survival, and Beta will teach Alloy technologies. A lot of time will be devoted to "Sisterly Love".
There will be a grand battle, all the tribes of the earth, riding robots, against a huge number of awakened Titan robots. To help the people of Earth, other Zenith ships will arrive, help the earthlings repel the attack from outer space. There will only be one clone of Elizabeth Sobek. And most likely it will be a real Alloy. And her sister Beta will sacrifice herself, in the battle against Nemesis, to turn her off. Something like "This is your world, I'm a stranger here, take care of your people."
Perhaps they will show the old Alloy in the role of the honorary matriarch of the Earth, her children, maybe a husband .....or a wife. People will begin to protect nature, combine technology, robots with an undemanding lifestyle.

I personally have no issue with Varl dying without a climatic battle because death in real life is unexpected and out of no where. I didn't think he would die and just how quickly it happened was also jarring. That is how life is
That's even more tragic. He died instantly, and didn't even get to say goodbye to Aloy. Aloy didn't even get to say her goodbye either. Her life is so tragic. The weight she carries on her shoulder, I'm amazed on how she can stay so optimistic in the worst of times. Truly a inspirational character, and how they should write characters.

@@ssensei34 True, but Nemesis is by far the biggest threat Earth will face. Worse than the Faro Plauge, worse than the Zeniths and worse than any clan or machine. Nemesis is incredibly horrifying, and at the end of the game I truly thought Sylens would leave them. It's cosmic horror done right. When Aloy found out that it destroyed the colony on Sirius in a matter or hours,I was just..... how will they defeat that monstrosity?

I just got to this part today and it was horrible for me, I really began to connect to Varl. I realized how good and fun of a guy he was and I really wish I could’ve appreciated him more. Now that he’s gone, the game just didn’t feel the same afterwards

I think Sona will understand honestly. Varl was adamant about following Aloy into the Forbidden West, no one forced him to go.
I just encountered this part and I’m really pissed . Varl traveled hella far just to help aloy and was probably the most likeable character in the game and instead of something emotional or side quest or anything and aloys first thought is beta and eating breakfast.
I feel even worse for his mother tbh, she has lost EVERYONE now

Well, albeit sounds fucked up. But the entire fate of the world, GAIH or however you spell it and etc is in the hands of the enemy at this point of the game. She doesn’t have time to sit down and fuckin cry. If you were in her position and sat down and cried then the world for sure would have died out lol.

I Shoulda known something was up when aloy called him rost and everyone got a side quest except him that you didn't have to complete before this.
I was honestly mad when he died. Shaken, very sad , but first of all mad. I already liked him in zero dawn, but the depth they gave him in this game made him to be one of my favourites. The way he found a way to talk to everyone, no matter how different or where they come from and also be patient with Aloy and look behind her strong facade made him a really good friend and bridge in between their group. The developers did a great job there, have to admit that. But it still broke my heart a little.
People's obsession with their favorite character needing to have a epic dramatic death makes me want to roll my eyes. Life happens.
Exactly people can’t except realistic character deaths. Yeah it was flashy but it still highlighted who Varl was as a character and created an impact for the story
I thought it was an honorable death for Varl not flashy over the top but enough to not be mad
I blame Marvel and their brainwashing movies.
I mean it was realistic. Varl had nothing but a spear and bow against millennia old advanced tech aliens that were practically impenetrable. We literally knew this as well. The method to dismantle their shields was still something out of Aloys reach so there was little they could hope for at Gemini other than the Zeniths not finding them. And they did. Had Tilda not saved Aloy she would’ve died as well.

I wasn't expecting Varl to get killed. He was such a great character and it's a shame. I just hope they don't kill Erend off in Horizon: Whatever The Third Game is Called

Varl's death just upset me so much that I didn't care about the rest of the game. Hell, it made me dislike Zo more than I already did before. Varl lost his sister months ago and he was going to educate the Nora on technology and human history. He didn't deserve to die.

@@karasmith4365 I disliked Zo long before Varl's death. I wasn't a fan of her relationship with Varl because it was so rushed. I didn't like that she got into fights with Eren and Varl because she got offended easily by some of their comments. Plus I didn't care about her land god nonsense.
I just disliked her more after Varl's death when the writers had her pull out a pregnancy troupe.

If you found a good man/woman you pretty much got together fast because I can't imagine the life expectancy is really high for the average person considering the fight machines and people every day for a living. If you wanted to have a child, you had to find someone you like fast because you will end up like Varl and die really young and not pass on you bloodlline

Putting spoilers like this in the title 2 days after the game comes out is really scummy shit.
All tears aside, I kind of liked that when Gerald told Erik to squash Varl like a bug, Varl’s first instinct was to squash Erik like a bug. Literally. And Varl’s plan would have worked if Erik wasn’t invincible.
Varl knew Zo was pregnant; he let himself die to dodge child support.

This is one of if not THE GREATEST game I have ever played. I’m in love with this series. This story. The gameplay. Everything about it. Really hope they make a third game.
It would really suck if they didn't make a third game especially because they left forbidden west with we got that threat out of the way but there's an even bigger threat sort of thing. They're all preparing and spreading the word about it and telling us this is what the next game is going to be about.

I was gutted when Varl died but when Zo started singing I couldn't help but laugh because it was out of nowhere and it ruined the whole mood.
This should have had a deeper impact than it did. Maybe there is a side quest I have not done yet done, but Varl's death was handled poorly imo. Should have had more depth and emotion. The game plays on without him to much regard, except for the grave next to mother base... I liked him more than Errand.🙁

In my opinion his death was handled fine. I just think they needed Varl and the others involved in more main quests to build up to it more. I like that they had him stand his ground and I felt the team’s reactions were done well (since Alloy blacked out they already had a day or so to begin coping and bury him)

@@Theonecamcam123321 was it way longer though? They only actually knew of eachothers existence after Varl took Aloy to an Utaru settlement for help after she passed out, it's not like they were there for months fighting the zeniths. Alot happened in the span of a couple weeks or so, maybe even less

These kind of deaths are powerful because even though the game ends with everyone victorious, there’s still a feeling of somber knowing you lost somebody on the path to victory.
playing this for maybe the 6th time through, and this still makes me cry! it’s the combo of varls death, aloy and betas reactions, and then aloy not being able to kill beta. it’s just so much pain in such a short scene, incredibly well done!

I had a feeling early on in the game that Varl would die, only because he’s one of the very few actually likeable characters in this universe, yet they shoved him to the side with Zo right away with no buildup or reason for the audience to care about their relationship. Not to mention that first fight he was in when he just stood there like a fool and got knocked down immediately as if he isn’t the son of the war chief... I kept telling myself they wouldn’t do that since Vala already died though, and I’ve been really sad to find I was wrong lol.
I don’t understand how a game that is so great in so many other aspects can have such horrible writing when it comes to the characters. Even the ones I want to like it’s like they try to make as obnoxious as possible or the game just straight up ignores everything that’s interesting about them.
I’ve been really excited about this sequel for years and went out of my way to avoid spoilers this whole time, hoping they’d finally make it more memorable and easier for the audience to connect more with not only Aloy but all the main characters she meets and befriends too, but this game has the exact same issue as the first game. It doesn’t matter how pretty or well-made a game is when it lacks emotional depth and scenes/writing decisions like this just don’t feel earned. Unfortunately it’s what will always make a game feel forgettable because it doesn’t matter how good a story is on its own when there’s no emotional connection to any characters (or what potential for connection is there is never followed up on).
Every character is incompetent and useless except Aloy, good job on the revelation

I’m glad someone is taking about Zo because I was like “what the hell?” When she was kissing Varl after apparently only TWO DAYS together. I like Zo, but it just seemed extremely forced and unnatural. Not to mention, Varl seemed to have some sort of interest in Aloy beforehand so he moved on rather quickly.

A death I was no where near prepared for. It really hits hard because you have the chance to work with him in the first and second game, and can talk to him to develop a strong friendship between Aloy and himself. Hell, I thought they were gonna end up with one another at first. This definitely hit hard, but unlike TLOU2, there so much time you could've be around the guy, see his reactions, his interactions, etc.
Then when I found out Zo was pregnant by him, I nearly lost it lol 😆 THE FEELS
You know they'll kill erend in the next game

That was the most heartbreaking moment in the sequel of horizon. I almost cried for real after seeing Varl meet his fate
If you compare Varl's death to Rost's, there's a big difference. For Ross, it was a fair fight that he could have potentially won. For Varl, we knew the whole time it was pointless and hence his death wasn't as impactful
Idk for me his death felt the same. Both times someone close to Aloy gave themselves to save her/her mission. The fact that he couldn’t win didn’t ruin it in my opinion, it just made it sadder because watching the scene you have a false hope that he’ll get away or survive somehow only to realize that he wasn’t going to. The fact that he stood his ground really made me love his character even more

Unlike Ross, his death served no purpose for the plot. He didn’t sacrifice himself or anything, he just died a pitiful death.
@@Dr.Meme-Man actually I think it did. If he wasn’t there, I think Erik would’ve killed Aloy on the spot, despite Tilda betraying the zeniths. And Varl’s last words were something that any person should do, protect others no matter the cost even if it was pointless. Carl is a very lovable character and despite Aloy pushing him away, he still insists on coming along and doing everything he can to protect his best friend
Rost's death was to save Aloy and Varl's death was to try and save Beta who he tried to protect, so in a sense yes they are the same but for different characters kind of saw it coming with Varl being the "emotional death" in this one early on at least he went out swinging.

Can I trade one Beta and one Alva for a Varl. Honestly, I feel very bad for Sona. She has lost both of her children in both games. Aloy also losing Varl one of the few Nora friends she made in this first game.
Varl really grew on me since the first game, was gutted when he died, even more so when I found out about Zo 😭

I guess to me, his death didn’t feel earned. Had they made him more involved with the main missions, Or expanded him beyond dialogue options or shoving him to the side, perhaps I would feel more impacted.

I was hella pissed and sad my second favorite character got clapped like this. I had a feeling it would happen but god damn they made seem a like a bitch in his final moments.
Personally I thought he was a badass in the end, he knew he couldn’t win and was facing his death but he didn’t run away. He tried to outsmart him but dropping the machine on him and then when it failed still stood his ground and attempted what he could. A bitch would’ve turn and ran. I only wish he had a few more scenes in missions

He wasn’t a bitch in his final moments. He fought like a hero and even though he knew he had no chance against the Zeniths he still did all his best. Varl’s death was in character. Unlike a certain character from another PS exclusive that died bc they made him out of character.
How in the hell did he look like a bitch here? The man was a primitive warrior going against a 1000 plus year old invulnerable psychopath. Put yourself in his position. What would you have done? Nothing is what. He told Aloy he would protect Beta with his life and he did
this is the reason why alloy runs away from people she cared about! this the reason why she has no connection with anyone because of what she has to face, varl's death was pointless and could have been easily avoided, he knew from his focus that the zeniths where invincible and can't be killed at the time, the only way alloy was able to defeat them was from sylens when he disabled them at the planned assault, this death could have been avoided easily, just take beta somewhere safe away from the zeniths but he chose to fight a impossible immortal enemy and choose a pointless death instead, the writers for this game could have done a better path when it comes to fate but we know his death was pointless and was there to make sure he is dead, i'm still mad that he died in such a pointless way! smdh what a waste!
Wow, I am kind of less interested in playing it now. Played horizon zero dawn on PC for the first time in 2020, was blown away by the story and world, Varl was one of my favorite characters. I hate it when writers try to create emotional scenes by killing off main characters.
So would you rather just no important characters ever die and all your stories have no stakes?

@@brojob5102 Of course not, just saying if you are going to kill off a main character atleast let his/her death be meaningful. Varl's death had no meaning here, the scene could have played out the same way if Varl was absent, the clone getting kidnapped and Aloy being saved by Tilda. I just don't see what impact his death had on the story. Although I haven't played it yet so I maybe wrong just giving my opinion based on the video.

@@elijahjames8178 I think lack of meaning is good. Men's death rarely had meaning throughout history, but they died like Varl did all the same. As a writer, what's more important than meaning to me is a respectful death that's true to character. And Varl got that. There was nothing out of character orchestrated here for Varl to die. Compare that to say, Joel's death, whose character had to be assassinated in order to get himself killed, and you get a glaring contrast. Varl was himself until the end. Intuitive, loyal, and brave.
Deaths like these serve to remind you of the stakes. That is their meaning. As long as they are written well, they are more of a benefit than a detriment.
I think people's issue here is that Horizon has too few characters of note. People are going to attach themselves to the only characters there, and that's pretty much limited to Erend and Varl. And then when one and inevitably the other gets killed, it leaves you hollow because that's all there was.
The writing of his death isn't the issue. The rest is.

This was a surprise to me, I was so excited to see aloy make progress and establish a connection with Hephaestus and everyone was alive, then the zeniths came and did a surprise and attacked them. I wasn't really expecting this plan to go well but I also wasn't expecting varl to get killed.
Bro, it should've been Zo or Alva. Those 2 freaking annoyed me idk why. More so with Alva, who I never expected to be a part of our team, she's so damn forgetable. Some side characters were more interesting than these 2. Varl was one of the cool ones bro...

The thing that actually makes this scene carry such emotional weight is the dichotomy between our heroes and the zeniths the zeniths through genetic engineering have solved immortality yet they are so careless and never stop to appreciate life, wheras varl since the death of his sister cherished every day and learned great patience something he tells aloy and actually says in a dialogue scene right before you accept the gemini mission, the devs did a great job of fleshing this character out in the second game , it seems almost unfair that such a meathead douchebag like Erik is the one that kills him, oh well when i get my revenge im taking scalps Erik.

Losing Varl hurt bad. Definitely cried. It wasn’t just that he was a good friend, he really developed into the glue keeping Aloy’s little band together. And he refused to let her do her impossible quest alone. I hate that he was killed off. I was way less attached to Erend.

He didn’t need to die (since Tilda would’ve saved them either way). His death served nothing for the characters, as they were already motivated.
It’s not sad either, given how they shoved him to the side gif the majority of the game. And it comes off as frustrating with the “I’m pregnant” cliché.

Despite all his knowledge and promise Varl is practically a caveman when pitted against a Zenith. He died a realistic death. It was said MULTIPLE times that if the Zeniths showed up they stood no chance. The worst happened and they were found. Varl knew he was going to die but he fought anyway. That IS a noble death.
I first played forbidden went and NOW zero dawn.. I was so confused why Varl didn't got a quest but then this happended and I literally cried cus I loved him so much. We went through soooo much and he got killed of some dutchman....

What I was kind of hoping for, was a butterfly effect. BETA said she needed as long as possible to make sure everything is fine & that it will work.
So I thought if I cleared all the side missions & everything that I can up to that point on the map & only then do this Mission.
I was praying it would mean that Varl would live. Really wish it was a butterfly fly effect, because I have always enjoyed Varl's character.
I was not prepared for his death at all, I like to know absolutely nothing before I start any game. So I get no spoilers.. so Varl's death hit me really hard !!

At least Varl had a more respectful and sadden death than Jesse from TLoU 2 when it came to soon to be fathers who won't see their unborn child.
Kudos to Guerilla for writing characters so well that we truly get attached to them. Varl's death here genuinely upset me. On the flipside, I channelled all that rage against Erik. Not to brag, but I'm a Soulsborne veteran (currently playing Elden Ring), so Erik's boss fight was easy and predictable for me. And precisely because of that, I toyed with that ***hole. I enjoyed every second that I tortured him while he thought he had a chance. And in true Soulsborne fashion, I savescummed/copied the save file before his fight, so that I can kick his ass over and over again. For Varl!
Varls death stung. But even more so when Zo reveals she’s pregnant. Varl died before he knew he was going to be a dad.

What gets me is Erik picked Varl up and stabbed him the same way he could've done Aloy when you confront him again on the final mission. I get that she's the protag but I just felt unfair tbh because you really feel that was the reason for it. He could've easily killed her there like he did Varl. Him dying sucks because not only was it so quick and unexpected but hardly any grief was shown for his death. I said the same thing about others that have died. There's like hardly any emotion in this game from the characters

So yes... People die in some stories. It needs to be a meaningful death, yes if the death have a purpose in the plot... Aloy would confront the Far Zenith even without his death... So because all above he was a wasted character in this game.

I thought about that, too. I got reminded of that again when in one quest with Erend the female end boss is a black women, too. And I was like, why isn't she chinese or simply white? Same with Regalla, she's black and gets killed, too. Kind of a strange choice to get every (important) black one killed.

It was already heavy forshadowed when she saw Varl as Rost. Rost was like a father figure to Aloy, while Varl was this brother figure to her, the closest of friends. God damn it...
