I always thought there was something brilliant about this, the script, the peformance, the way it's not a straight parody of American sitcoms, but mocks our perceptions of them, and the comedy of Fools and horses, and all with an awkward tension and self-conciousness that sits between the 2 shows.. I find myself randomly repeating lines from this all the time.. Ello Uncle Albert, Robot.. Nice Jubbly...
I love the attention to detail at 0:48 - patiently repeating your line once audience laughter dies down = HELLO THIS IS A TV SHOW! So many US sitcoms "taped before a studio audience" were guilty of that. Missed trick: where is the vanity parade of credits splattered all over the first 2 minutes of this? Extra points: they should be eccentric American names like "SUPERVISING PRODUCER - CHALFONT NEXUS JR" "ASSISTANT DIRECTOR - KETTLE BRIGHTHELM III". And so on.
Lmao this is one of my favourite clips on youtube. I love how they frown upon illegality "That would be against the Lawr!...I would be punished by the supreme court and rightly so!" *applause*
So...clearly you don't understand what it is they're actualy parodying here. So many British sitcoms, when remade for the US, are exactly like this. It's _meant_ to be crap.
Never seen this before but am here due to watching a video about an American version (Which is probably how everyone else now is finding this video). I found this hilarious. Plus, poor Rodney Americans really cant do comedy
It's funny how this parody manages to be so much funnier than the actual US remake of Only Fools and Horses. For educational purposes here is the link for 'Kings of Van Nuys.' ua-cam.com/video/5onJwTNonxc/v-deo.html
I think most remakes of sitcoms are a bad idea, though. To turn it around, lok no further than the British "Golden Girls", "Married with Children" or "Mad About You"...
I especially love how when they place their fists over their "hearts", it's the wrong side! American remakes = Satanic wastes of time and energy. This spoof is 100% true.
they're not ''doing'' American comedy- , they're mocking it.... and I think they did quite well... and to add to that, the American version of The Office has been very successful and that was adapted from the original English one!
I remember these short skits on channel 4 inbetween films over a weekend called sitcom weekend or something, Lucas + Walliams were not established stars at the time, must have been about 1996/7...
I remember them on UK Comedy Central in between the shorter shows, after midnight, when they couldn't sell advertising space and needed to make up time.
I looked it up. It was aired in a lot of countries but never Canada. Perhaps your country has the same tastes in TV as the yanks? Anyway - is it worth watching? Considering the fact that we regard it as a national institution and just about one of the finest comedies we've ever put on the box, i'd say yes! Don't get me wrong, it had it's moments, but it was usually first class. If you can track down a special called 'Jolly Boys' Outing' you won't get much better.
He's a philosophy professor and carries the broom around in order to illustrate the existential conundrum of "Trigger's Broom". If he replaces the head numerous times and replaces the handle numerous times, then can it be considered to be the same broom or not?
This is hilarious (some silliness on the surface of course - which is great- but some very well observed cultural subtleties around differences about how success/‘failure’ is seen, and how non compromisable even in the name of comedy that stuff is. Like how there was zero chance that Rachel Green was ever going to stay working in a coffee shop). But anyway, there was also a Seinfeld parody which was even funnier - but seems to have disappeared completely. Do you/anyone have a link for this too?
The ironic thing is, America actually tried to do this. With Doc Brown from Back To The Future as Grandad, as I recall. As dreadful as all the other doomed pilots of witless American remakes, of course.
@@MarlboroughBlenheim1 true, but it definitely sold out. The first season was closer in tone to the original, but after poor ratings they brought it closer to the American sitcom format and that's when it became a success. The British sitcom Episodes (with Matt LeBlanc) is a great parody of this exact situation.
@@oliverholmes-gunning5372 I think the US office was better by a long way when it broke free of the English series in the first season. The next few seasons of the US office are really good, well written, intelligent and so on. Yes it went on too long I think but it’s a really good show. Rare example of a transition working.
I love British comedy no less than I love American comedy on the whole, but honestly, I'd say each culture has its equal share of "obvious" and "subtle" humor. Catherine Tate, Fawlty Towers, Father Ted, The IT Crowd, Absolutely Fabulous, Red Dwarf, The Young Ones, Bottom, Gimme Gimme Gimme, Are You Being Served, ahem, Little Britain -- subtle? Hardly! Brits love their formulaic, loud, and/or raunchy comedy just as much as Americans do.
Funny, but not that accurate. They do get the context wrong when they copy our comedies, but at least they put plenty of gags in them so that there are a few laughs.
This is about ten times as funny than Little Britain, about 100 times less funny than Rock Profile, and about a thousand times less funny than Only Fools and Horses. ... you know, I'm really not xenophobic, all the Americans I've met have been decent, friendly and well-informed; I just wish they would sort out their entertainment media. All the might of Hollywood and all they can come up with are remakes of remakes and prequels and sequels and comic book rip-offs??? Don't get me going on PBS.
Mark Gatiss looks the spitting image of Matt Smith as the Doctor. My brain cannot handle the awesomeness.
Watched this due to a video about the recent leak of the 2012 US Fools & Horses pilot. Love that ending.
"Oh shit, I'm in the 1940s." < Goodnight Sweetheart joke. xD

That goodnight sweetheart joke at the end

Nice to see Mark Gatiss dressed as the 11th Doctor, back in 1997. That's foresight!
Lmao this is one of my favourite clips on youtube. I love how they frown upon illegality "That would be against the Lawr!...I would be punished by the supreme court and rightly so!" *applause*
Nice Jubbly!
That was some shit - no wonder nobody’s ever seen this sketch since. For all the great stuff they made, they sure made some howlers!
So...clearly you don't understand what it is they're actualy parodying here. So many British sitcoms, when remade for the US, are exactly like this. It's _meant_ to be crap.
Richard Osman off Pointless gets a writing credit.
At least they didn't ruin The Inbetweeners... Oh wait...
Yes It's Mark Gatiss & it's also directed by Edgar Wright! These sketches were one of the first shows he directed..if i remember correctly..
Great foresight there from Matt and David...

Americans really cant do comedy
NICE JUBBLY!
So it turns out Matt Smith really is a time traveller...
Better than the American version they made that has recently been on UA-cam!
Is Mark Gatiss playing Matt Smith? But with a broom instead of a mop? Now thats spooky!!
Nice nod to the underrated Goodnight Sweetheart at the end. Nicholas Lyndhurst was great in Fools, but personally I think he's better in GS.
this was pretty good

When I saw this back in 1997 I'd never have guessed that this would really have been made by an American TV company. Bet it won't beat this.
bonus Mark Gatiss as Trigger. lol i love how it is making fun of how americans have no snese of humour and take themselves too seriously
Homeboycie brilliant😂

This sketch was better than the actual US remake of OFAH, made in 2012 but only recently became public:

Does anyone else think that Trigger looks a bit like the Eleventh Doctor?
Ha ha this is great, a good old fashioned piss take. Falls apart a bit towards the end wid the pizzeria tho lol
lol trigger looks like matt smith

That +is+ Mark Gatiss...right?
I don't think it was ever aired where I live... is it worth watching?
kk thnx
: )
NICE JUBBLY
Rodney was more like gumbo off id
what was this show called?
Guess these Americans never heard of Rodney King...or Dangerfield.
and BTW, what show was this one spoofing?
Only Fools And Horses, one of the best and most beloved sitcoms in British televisual history
looking at your channel you're a big fan of british comedy... but you've never heard of Only Fools & Horses?!? Odd.
Chico And The Man
AbouT The HouSe.......
Directed by Edgar Wright.
2:10 FUCK ME its the Eleventh Doctor

HOLY SHIT IT'S THE ELEVENTH DOCTOR @ 2:05
@ILoooooveCamels father ted is more irish.
i agree with qwertycash
if thats what americans did to Only Fools and Horses, I'm really going to hate their version of Kath and Kim
@Bigchimpin87 WALOC
wot a load of cobblers

Only fools and horses is iconic
At least they haven't ruined Fawlty Towers ... oh God, oh no oh please make it stop
Actually 3 American fawlty towers remakes were tried
Really? sarcasm and american humour in the same sentence?
Makes me ill cuz I’m English they copied our only fools and Horses
Is this meant for an American audience to watch? Surely not.
42 seconds in and grabbed the razor. This is CRAP.
... sorry, i'm stupid; that was supposed to be '... ten times -less- funny than Little Britain...'
they ruined only fools and horses
It is a parody of American remakes of British sitcoms. 🙄
Sophie J yes but a really bad version (my opinion)
well .. last few seconds were funny, ... but seriously waste of time boys!
Funny, but not that accurate. They do get the context wrong when they copy our comedies, but at least they put plenty of gags in them so that there are a few laughs.
