About the invisible stalker: he is cleary undressing while he is engaging into a camp or something, so he is aware that he is seeable with that silly hat
Carnassious Yes, if the sleeves are completely black or with artwork (and the latter are prone to damage) and even then you might sometimes see the back. It's way safer to use proxies and if you have to use proxies for a mechanics to work, you know you did something wrong.
To all of the people saying Jace mind sculptor should be number 1, or on this list at all, just remember that he is A LOT easier to deal with than an invisible stalker. A simple oblivion ring, lightning bolt, pithing needle, ratchet bomb will destroy or completely shut jace down. You can't do any of that, (except the ratchet bomb obviously) to an invisible stalker. THe fact its unblockable means you can pump the shit out of it without any worries, and it's human, so gets a shit tonn of bonuses from enchantments, other creatures and artifacts. Much harder to deal, and in a lot of cases, you just can't deal with it. Not every deck has a board wipe or a bonfire of the damned.
Jace in the Alara/Zendikar standard had something like 5 commonly-played answers to him, which weren't used exclusively as answers to him (maelstrom pulse, oblivion ring, pithing needle, other Jaces, the bloodbraid/blightning combo, etc...), he wasn't a menace when the format readily provided answers.
Jace dominated a format for a long time and that's why people wanted it on the list. Granted, some of the cards they mentioned are still frustrating to play against in any format, but Jace deserves an honorable mention for its role in almost killing Zendikar-Scars of Mirrodin Standard and basically making many tournaments have a $400-600 fee (the cost of 4 copies).
True-Name Nemesis seems like a major mistake to me. "How can we make a balanced version of Invisible Stalker?" - "Make it cost an extra blue?" "WOAH... Balanced, not NERFED." - "Add two power?" "No... needs more..." - "Make it a Merfolk?" "Great! It'll be perfect for Legacy and Vintage! Still needs more..." - "More than hexproof and can't be blocked?" "Yes." - "Protection from a player?" "Perfect! It'll be balanced because it would be bad in multiplayer!" - "But it's going to..." "PRINT IT!" - "Ev..." "PRINT IT NOW!"
embarkingolive doesn't die to pyroclasm-protection from a source reduces all damage from that source to 0. However, a WoG-style effect would effect it. But I agree- it really sucks for all its hype. On the other hand, Toxic Deluge is a card I definitely agree is really quite underrated, as IMO it is the best kill spell. Pay 15 life and unequivocally kill every EDH-legal creature in the game for 3, barring counterspells.
Save Mean That's my main problem with TNN. If it was meant to be a multiplayer EDH experiment, why is it on such a cheap and fragile body? It would be leagues more appropriate for EDH if it were, like, a 6 mana 5/5 Sphinx. That way, it isn't a complete joke against the players who aren't named by it. But it's not; it was deliberately pushed for Legacy, and in such a way that makes it completely laughable in multiplayer formats. It was a multiplayer experiment that was deliberately botched to push it in 1v1, where it is not fun in the slightest to play against.
I remember when I was first starting to deck build I was going to buy a couple of Karn for 12$ a piece but thought it was too expensive. If only I had known.
Juan Chaguaceda Invisible stalker was standard and modern legal, and only on this list because it was annoying, not broken. Nemisis is a legacy card, and not a very played one, though merfolk usually runs 1-2
Juan Chaguaceda Did you play standard when this was around? Asking because nothing hurt more than your opponent playing the Stalker turn 2. You can't kill it except for mass removal, it is simply impossible. Also, when this and ethereal armor were both legal, it was nuts. True-name nemesis only saw a widespread play for a month or two.
@Lamp Boi I was around the whole time that was a thing. He was selling eldrazi on ebay and they caught him by ordering stuff from him and comparing it against CFBs inventory. Idk what TSG was thinking.
I didn't think about invisible stalker that way before but now that you guys mentioned it makes a lot of sense. If they don't draw the runechanter's pike he's just a crappy 1/1 creature, but if they do you die in two-three turns.
I got a question: Whenever the opponent uses an ability can I use counter spell to target it or does it only work exclusively when they summon it? Do regenerated creatures have summoning sickness?
I miss Invisible Stalker with cypher in standard. It wasn't great but everyone hated me for it. My opponent: "I'll O-ring your Stolen Identity" Me: "You can't, It's not an enchantment. it's on the creature itself" My opponent: "..." Me: "ATTACK OF THE CLONES!!!"
Stalker may be annoying during phyrexia I think Blighted Agent trumps it. Unblockable plus poison, by 5th turn I usually had mine boosted to +3 to +5 and that is already when they had 2/3 poisons on them.
+Paul it was basicly a core part of my dimir deck in standard. Perfect candidate for ciphers. fog bank for creature defense. The only thing that prevented Stalker from being a monster in the any format is board clear. supreme verdict or black sun zenith, so many saw play.
Basically the moment invisible stalker gets lifelink it is an autowin. Several times the other player will concede the moment they found out it has lifelink.
Not a ton, tbh. It's still a sorcery, and the most damage you'll do is maybe getting two cards out of your opponents hand on turn one. If you're lucky, you could get rid of 5 of their cards, but keep in mind, it'll cost 4 life every time you cast a Thoughtseize for 0, and JUND already brings itself down to 17 on turn 1(usually), and going to 13 first turn isn't really worth the extra card.
@xx415pato7xx456 Some counterspells say that you can target an ability, but if it only says "Counter target spell" or something similar, then you can only counter a creature the moment it is summoned (or, of course, any other spell). Regeneration does not couse summoning sickness, because what it does is that it removes the damage and then taps the creature. It doesn't go to the graveyard and then come back, which also means it keeps all counters and/or auras/equipments on it.
It's mainly from in-practise myself. Usually I had a couple Belerens in my sideboard in case I played against someone with Mind Sculptor, though. I've always won with Mind Sculptor out, though. (Usually had a card that said I had to skip my draw phase and could only draw only when I played a spell.) That and in one of my own decks, I know how to deck someone in one turn. If I used Mind Sculptor in it instead of Beleren, it wouldn't have worked. At all.
Seems interesting, but then I can't really tell, because I have not studied tournament strategies for ages. I play my friends regularly, but I can't follow most of this. It wouldn't take much to briefly explain the combos (and showing them on-screen) you are referring to instead of just abbreviating them.
The story I Heard was Skull Clamp was supposed to be +1/+1 but they thought that would be too good and wanted to "balance" it and make it +1/-1. They were also new to this whole equipment design.
>.>. As a dredge player (who never got to see those days) id have put one of the old dredge cards on that list- Even though i get the feeling they will NEVER give us that mechanic again. what about mind sculptor, the blades of New Phyrexia?, heck, Necropotence? Although i get chuckles sometimes when i play an innistrad era card at my friend who came back during RTR. he hates nearly all of them.
This is such an early cycle that they have learned from, but the alpha dual Lands are stupid good. Especially them being searchable makes them just the best Lands period.
I actually liked Skullclamp era affinity because it was slightly slower than post ban affinity (and cranial plating) - my Mind's Desire Deck could actually compete. Not after the Plating however.

I agree with LSV about Top. You shouldn't be allowed to play with it if you're slow. But since I play at an adequate or better pace, I should be allowed to play with it.
How broken tolerian academy + 6 1 cost artifacts + mirror universe, activate = opponent screwed unless he has shatter disenchant or something simuliar in his hand at the time.

Vexing Devil is a 4 damage to target player for 1 mana burn spell. The most you can have is 4. 4 x 4 = 16 and is still not enough to kill your opponent. He is not broken. Good for RDW but not broken. Odds are you will only get 1 or 2 devils in a game anyway.
