Like it! Thanks! When I was in high school metal shop we were taught to keep our files chalked. A stick of chalk rubbed into the file surface keeps your file from loading up with debris, and keeps your file feeling nice and sharp. Works good for any shaped file.
I can't thank you enough since you showed me this easy way to sharpen how much easier it's to quickly sharpen a saw. Better and faster than hand and it's easy to keep angle steady. Ray Stormont
I'm glad to hear your going to Bunyan. Now my list is complete of the youtubers I want to meet. Thank you and yes I've always wanted to get one of those tools but just didn't get around to it yet.
That is great craftsmanship! I need one of those bench vise. I will email you Chris. I will not be at Paul Bunyan! I need this this past weekend when i was hitting wire, insulators and concrete in a tree.
Back when hand saws were in common use they made several different vices far better than that one. I have several of them. I still just put my saw on my tailgate , mark my starting tooth with a sharpie and use my electric sharpener powered off a lawn mower battery. Takes about 5 minutes. The dreamed may be ok but the ones made for sharpening Chain saws have a plate that shows the proper 30° angle. Beats that dreamed all to hell.
Nice video/bar vice Chris. Bert did a nice job with this. I will consider adding this to my collection of firewood accessories. I'll not be at Paul Bunyan this year as I used my "bucket list" budget to visit "field of dreams movie site" with my son & daughter this week. GNI
G’morning Chris. Most awesomest vice. Thank you for always ‘splaining things for us. I will definitely buy a bar vice from you !! I’ll bother you long enough until you cave. GoodNightIrene
I just told (asked) my wife we are going on Sunday!! Be sure to stop by Old Dayton Pizza on the way there. You can check out our modest wood yard. We keep our fire pit burning every minute we’re open (closed Sunday and Monday). It’s only a couple of minutes off the both interstates. 70 and 75 in Dayton!! I think taking pre orders before spending the time and money is the way to go.!! Thanks Chris!!
Nice chainsaw holding device. I like the dremial tool too. But I still handfile. I do have a dremial tool and stones and I did try it, but I still hand file. I think, if I did more dremial tool use I’d get use to it and maybe use it more. Have a great day.
I'm wondering how many times can you sharpen the chain with a dremel tool before the teeth are gone? I usually sharp the chain by hand cca 5-7 times before I get it sharpened by a machine (max 3 machine sharpening...it takes off a lot of material)
Great little tailgate saw holder! I’m glad you finally let the cat out of the bag. I have been waiting on this reveal since HFH😂 I’m sure you will sell them all in no time Sir Chris👍🏻👍🏻GNI
Great information , I think you’ve changed my chain saw sharpening technique , I won’t be able to make it to the show so is there anyway to get the bracket that holds the saw ? If so let me know , thank you .
I've messed around with those stump vises, I think they work great but I'm never far from the truck.i do have trouble keeping track of them though, my wood truck tends to get...congested towards the end of saw season. I'm gonna pull the trigger on a dremel, probably the way to go.have a good day
Great idea Bert came up with (wink, wink) I don’t see how any Woodhound can be be without one. These will be worth some money one day as a collectors item. 👍TCT
Started out with a 4inch bench vise bolted to the tailgate of the woods truck,Tried a stump vice for a bit but it continually pulled out of the stump so eventually modded it by cutting the spikes off and welded a piece of flat metal and bolted it to a piece of wood serviceable but not nearly as nice looking as Berts design.
I like the fact that the clamp is deep enough so when you place the bar in it, you don't have to play around so the chain teeth don't touch the bottom. For the black clamp, you have to play around and adjust, and the screw clap isn't very good.
They are zip ties or cable ties that make my cuts for rounds to 16". I have several videos on how to make them work on my channel with another 1200 videos waiting for you to watch right now.
Did Husqvarna make a new concrete saw. Hahaha. Nice set up Chris. Love the logo on the vise. See ya at the show. Stop by at the eastonmade tent. We have something for you and Kenny

Hi Chris and guys, actually this one surprised me. Loggers and firewood cutters in New Zealand have been using something similar for years, the end looks like a small log dog with a small bar vice attached that you hammer into a log or stump to sharpen in the field 🤷👍 it seems lighter than the one you showed, that one looks heavy😆 but i guess if you're happy with a tailgate vice then you're happy 😂 GNI
so now instead of carrying a stump vice (1 lb), yoy carry a vice mounted on a3 ft board which weighs ?????, i go with the stump and a file that lowers the drags as it files the teeth. try it which takes the most space?
Yup, I mostly cut in my wood yard and I sharpen 3-5 saws at a time in 15-20 minutes on the tail gate, nice height and no looking for a stump so..... it works for me.
Here in East Feliciana parish, La. its currently 66 with a predicted high of 92 and no rain in sight. Still waiting on the “Big Change” to finally get here.
Cris when you use the Dremel are you worried about the teeth not being the same size, some may be smaller or bigger than others, does it then affect the cutting
No not at all. Sharp and good raker depth is all that matters EXCEPT when the teeth get TOO short then they cut slower. When only 1/3 of the tooth is left I think it is time for a new one.
I like the vise, Dremel with the battery pack is ok (everyone has different needs), but please use a proper depth gauge. Your saw will cut much better. It's worth the less than ten bucks to have your rakers correct.
I do have a depth gauge and I used to use it but after sharpening thousands of times I know when my rakers are to high when I cut and I can feel the if the chain needs work. Like when the chain starts to get dull and needs a touch up, I can feel it.
Ryobi finally released a compact dremel recently in their new USB-C battery line of tools. That'll be my black friday gift to myself. I have a soft carry case for my chainsaw with a bunch of pockets (too many pockets). That new dremel will fit perfectly in that case.
@@BertsCustomCuts thanks Bert, as asked by another member can you put a link in to your channel. BTW how are you going in the kitten reduction program, snip snip or reforming those cuties...?❤️

@jakebredthauer5100 there is also machining done on all surfaces of stock for visual appearance because it looks better. Everything is more expensive when its personalized. There was alot of time put into design these too.
Because they do not work well and you have to then carry an axe also to pound it in with and you need a really big stump at waist level or higher to work off the ground so.... The tailgate is WAY better to work off and then it can also be used on a work bench too, so better.
@@InTheWoodyard I guess I did not make myself very clear. Why not just take the stump vise you already own, and cut a round off of a log, OR, get a 2 X 10 board cut to the length you need, and pound the vise into the wood. This can be used the same way. Carried to your truck bed, bench, whatever. Since you already have the stump vise why not make use of it? I like your "bolt on" model, but I already own a stump vise and hate to waste it.
I'm not going to be at the Paul Bunyan show. But I would definitely buy a vice from you and pick it up if possible. My wife's family all lives in Seymour and freedom, so very close to you, and we're out there quite a bit. Can I pay you now via venmo and pick it up next time I'm out there?

It usually takes me 1 beer to sharpen a 28" full house. Dremel looks quick...would have to shoot whiskey instead maybe?
Less than 2 minutes. I like whiskey but never when cutting!!! Only after!
I'm not going to be at the Paul Bunyan show. But I would definitely buy a vice from you and pick it up if possible. My wife's family all lives in Seymour and freedom, so very close to you, and we're out there quite a bit.
Can I pay you now via venmo and pick it up next time I'm out there?
email me at chrisinthewoodyard@gmail.com with your phone number and we can set up a time, thanks
Mention that the file for the rakers doesn’t have teeth on the sides, some people won’t know that.
You can use a file with teeth on side you just need to be careful not to hit the tooth. Mine that I use has teeth on side and havent had any issues.
You are correct!
