Update* - www.youtube.co.... Another way to compress the springs is to use the jack to lift the axle and compress the spring, then install the tool and drop the axle. While this sounds great in theory, it may or may not save you some time because the compressor tool often seems to get jammed doing it this way... Either way, be safe!

I don't know if anyone's already mentioned it, but if you don't have spring compressors, unbolting the track bar from the axle bracket (in addition to the shocks and the sway bar drop links) will allow you to lower the axle enough for the springs to fully extend and drop out by themselves.
Amen. I’m right there right now. Just trying to figure out how to remove a bump stop cone now so I can get them out of there.
@@yosemitesamiam how’d it go?
I literally found myself tilting my phone away from my face while watching you force that spring in.
5:03 holy cheese. That's a live hand grenade! The banana shape is *exactly* what you want to avoid when compressing springs.
Could you just remove the shock entirely to make this easier? Also do I need to add that acos adapter if I'm doing a 3inch lift or is the stock stuff fine?
to remove the spring.. when I pulled the control arm bolts both springs just fell out.. put them back in same way and was way easier than messin with the spring compressor and a hell of a lot faster.. didnt remov the whole front end. as I said just lower control arms, sway bar, and shocks.. much safer too I felst after trying to remove the compressors from the compressed spring after it fell out. Love your vids they have been a ton of help Thank you!! and I love my Bleepin Jeep shirt too!
Dude, the hat at the end....I was dying. Thanks for the tips; disconnecting the sway bar, using a pipe wrench to position the spring. Those two tips were essential. I did it without a spring compressor!
I recently changed my control arms, they had a lot of travel, I lucked out. I just disconnected the sway bar and the shock, dropped that axle far enough to wedge the spring out and install a 4" lift spring with a crowbar and a precision kick.
Thanks again for the Bleepin' Jeep stuff, really helped me a ton with my YJ and my TJ
Safety glasses won't to shit if you get smacked in the head by compressed spring
doodleranga true stuff^
doodleranga No amount of safety gear will save you if that happens.. frikkin bomb-squad suit wouldn't help there)
Engage safety squints, tighten sphincter. Says clearly on workshop manual!
What you do about bump stop when tube been cut off
If you put the jack under the axle and compressed the spring, then put the compressor on it and dropped the axle it would come out easier.
Can you explain this better? Barney style for me?
Balto D Pretty sure he meant the control arm. Crank the jack under the control arm to force it up and compress it, then the actual compressor on so you don't have to crank it the long and show way. Sounds good but not sure how safe that is though.
put compressors on while suspension is under load (jack under axle) then release suspension wieght with jack stands under body... unbolt shocks......BAM
Yeah learned that after awhile works really well
That’s smart
If you drop the shocks and sway bar link on both sides, the axle will droop quite a bit further, making it so you don't need to compress the springs so far and saving a fair amount of time.
Most if not all spring compressor manufactures forbid the use of an impact for doing this, but lots of folks do anyway,, I know its just faster but more dangerous.
When I put 4 door Rubicon springs and shocks in, I unbolted the sway bar links and the shocks and the stock x 2 door springs practically fell out on their own. And it turns out that yes, 4 door springs are longer than 2 door springs. The front springs are 2 inches taller and the rear are about 1.25 inches longer. And effectively leveled my 2 door jk, no more race jeep. Lifted it 1.75 inches up front and 1 inch in rear. Since then I have taken my fenders off, rear bumper, and have a pure jeep "bare bonez" front bumper, 35/12.50/15 KO's and procomp 98's, and no tire carrier yet, I have my sights set on the AEV tire carrier and staying bumperless in the rear.
I didn’t have a spring compressor but I did pull both upper and lower control arms on passenger side and just the lower on drivers side worked fantastic with a 4ft pry bar!!!
Sweet, maybe I should have done that but last time I removed control arm bolts I had a heck of a time getting the axle lined back up to get the bolt back in. Glad you like the Tee!
Hey Matt, just wanted to let ya know I was swappin my 3.5 in lift from my 88 cherokee to my 92 and I found that if you set up like you did here with removing the shocks and sway bar all I had to do was remobe the lower control arm bolts only from the body side of the control arm it allows the front end to swing forward and down far enough to drop the springs with no compressor and no steering linkage coming off.. I only had to do this cause the spring compressor didnt compress far enough
:25-that is, by far, the 1st time I've ever laughed watching someone jack up a car!:)
351cleavland
351cleavland this guys off his effen meds
looool i replayed i over a few times for a laff he had a straight face too
The best tutorial video and also a lot tips. I learned a lot from this tutorial. now im able to repair my own car and also to share my videos with all you.
About the only thing I can think of that's more dangerous than using spring compressors would be taking a nap in your garage with the door closed and the engine running.
i want to clear something up… everyones saying the jack method is sketchy and blah blah blah. have you ever used a spring compressing tool? not much of a better option to be perfectly honest. I've seen them shits let go of a spring and shoot it 30 feet into the shop ceiling...
Canada here...done son! Thanks...keep turning that wrench.. one love
Love that jack technique!
The air tools really are nice on a project like this .I do not know if you have one but a video on air tools and cost for a starter set up might be a good video for some Jeep owners like myself getting into working on Jeeps and looking to add some tools to the garage ... great video.
Why didnt you place the jack on the other side (opposite the side you were working on) and jack it up pushing the other side of the axle down, instead of dangerous coil spring compressors? Ive yet to replace my WJ coil springs but they're on order from work so soon i should get them.
What rating are your safety glasses? I don't feel comfortable changing my springs with safety glasses that are not spring bomb rated. Also as a side note, Sunex spring compressors work on stock springs but are insufficient for 4.5"+ springs. They were flexing like crazy.
with the help of this video I changed my both rear spring coils myself saved £180 by not taking my car to a garage. Thanks mate
bump stops will rot and break up, you can see this visually. The springs will last forever but get softer over time. Is the gearbox moving or maybe you have some play inside? check out my videos on gearboxes, specifically the one about tightening it.
When i changed springs on my Jeep i only lifted the jeep up like you did and then put a lift below the wheel on the oposit side and jacked it up as far it can go, then the spring almost fell off without using the springcompressor.
You did it the correct way. Unlike the method demonstrated in this video.
Hey man, just wanted to say thanks for the awesome video work. Very informative and I'm sure you've helped a lot of people with these. They've definitely taught me quite a bit.
I completely understand. I was just askin in case there was something i missed as to why you shouldnt use a floor jack. Since im doin my coil springs soon.
Suggest putting the spring compressors on when there is weight on the axle. Also get a second set and put a pair on both driver and passenger at same time. Helps prevent twisting/ binding. I'm able to actually droop my axle enough when both springs are compressed that I often don't need to do anything but remove my bump stop.
Your the best buddy! You are the person I look to every time I have to do something to my jeep.😋
did this on mine thanks . Question will I need Longer shocks now as the shocks bottom out don't want to damage the shocks.
Hey James, did anyone help you out with your question yet? I know it was a while ago
I think removing that nasty shock completely might've made the spring clamp more accessible. Is there a reason why not to?
Matt, Matt, Matt...... although your videos have really good teaching points they can be scary as hell! I almost had heart failure twice . Once when you dropped the jack (whaaaaattt!) and then didn't appear to recheck the jacks for safe positioning. Then when the spring was moon shaped, now that was a bomb ready to go....yikes! Keep it real but please keep it safe.
dont see why not, I have a few of their tools and they offer a warranty if you wan to buy one. That said, made in 'Merica is always the best option but pretty hard to find these days.
My sway bar end link sheared off, the shock bolts had to be cut out. I also had to cut out my lower control arms. Why do I even
Hey matt I have used f150 coils to lift my jeep I had you have to turn them up side down thou but it cleared 31s perfect not sure how much lift it was but for a daily driver it was a perfect
I've seen this damn springs come lose. In an auto tech class, My friend was compressing one, he was leaning over the fender than it tightens unevenly. It sprung out and hit I'm right in the groin... Those springs are very dangerous.. I don't exactly like doing them like that...
My only suggestion is, get yourself a bigger air line. Volume is key with air tools. Those cheezy little plastic coil hoses dont supply the volume needed to make impacts work.
Big fitting at compressor, big fat line and even a neck down at the tool if needed, will make tools kick ass when using em.
It’s amazing that this can be done in about 20 minutes!
The shops charge 3 to 4 1/2 hours!
At $100 to 150 $ per hour!!
"You can rent these for free you just buy them, then bring them back when you're done"
the rental is indeed free. the deposit is 100 percent of the purchase price, and it is returned when you return the tool. most every auto parts shop has the free rental via 100 percent deposit program.
Is this a US only thing? How does the one renting get any economic gain from offering such purposes?
renting the tools for free promotes purchase of high ticket items like bearings and other components. I bought a 200 dollar piece because they loaned me the tools with a deposit equal to the tool price. I installed the piece, returned the tools, and got my deposit back. I have bought thousands of dollars worth of car parts over the years from the same car parts store because I know they have the tools necessary to install the parts. it makes a huge impact on sales of otherwise unsellable parts.
Rambling Riders lmao 😂
It’s a legitimate program that Auto Zone has.
I have been looking at some of the stuff at harbor fright and just wondering if it would be ok for just one person using them on the weekend . I was looking at changing my springs and shocks and was going to take my jeep and have the tier shop down the street change the springs but after watching the video I feel good about tackling it in my garage . Thanks again for all the great videos .
You forgot to mention the replacement of the ACOS top part of the installation my friend. Are all parts included when you buy the coils?
its called a bump stop. this one is part of an ACOS, I have a video on that too, check it out.
Hey sweet video man. I have a 1995 Jeep that needs a new pinion bearing. You have a video on that? Thanks
From my knowledge (not a whole lot) you stuck with the same size springs. If you went like 3" bigger would you be able to do the same trick without needing to unbolt the steering/control arms?
Why did you install the part that says ACOS? It wasn't there when you took the old springs off. Is that a coil sprint mount?
You have the best videos, Matt. Learned so much from you, thanks!
Glad you like them!
Good video and informative but I would like to make a suggestion. Pull the shocks first. Install compressor tool with the nut toward the top of spring. There is a hell of a lot more room to crank wrench in the wheel well versus the axle end.
Problem with placing the not on top is that if you're not careful the screws will advance downward and get in the way of the removal of the coil.
Nut, not "not"
never, cherokees always had leafs in the rear. Grand cherokees have the coils front and rear.
they come in different sizes, this is the next step up from the small ones.
well I'm no air tool expert but I'll put it on the list!
Has anyone ever actually seen a spring come out of compression tools though? I was thinking about it and I think all the tools I've used would make that pretty tough right?
Drop your front axle ? Good time to replace blown main seals if you've got a leaker
Does it matter which brand of springs I buy? Im not doing a lift. Just standard springs. I feel they are old and warn and don't spring as much and I feel many more bumps on the road. Shocks are fine and were tested.
go with whatever you can afford man, I'm sure some will last longer than others but who's to say which brand? I doubt anyone has ever tested them.
I managed to drop my axle enough to just drop the old coils out and throw my new zj coils in without any fancy tools
So much easier if you put the spring compressor after you jack up the axle, before you frame on lift... very little effore to put the isolator on...
I have rubbing on my rear right tire is it a coil spring problem or a shock problem ??? Should I try a coil spacer in the rears to correct this problem???
Buy preloaded and do both what are you doing this job so you don't have to go back and do the shock
@bleepin Jeep Hey Matt can u please make a video on how to set up bump stops correctly
would this be the same process to add some coil spacers? to the same vehicle
Do NOT do what he did at 6:55 to 7:00 please, this is extremely dangerous.
+okiefreemen Instead of him showing how to change coil springs, he's showing someone how to get seriously hurt or killed.
+okiefreemen I was just about to comment on that, yeah why wouldn't you just compress the springs more? Smart guy...
Stop acting like you done this.. you only watch videos of it in your moms basement
While I agree, we have all been there before while working on a car without realizing it. Haha
Those are adjustable bump stops where did you get them..? What kind are they?
He needed to change those shocks not be worrying about the springs lol
Do you laugh at your self when editing vids? Just the stuff you do is funnyer than hell
Great Video! I had a question, My 2010 Mercedes CLS 219 had both its rear coil springs replaced recently as they were fractured. Following replacement, the rear ride height seems to be a few centimetres more than it was previously. Is this normal? In time, will the rear ride height go back to how it was on the old springs that were replaced? Many thanks in advance.
Wind spring compressor by hand on when car is on the ground by hand and the when you jack up chassis spring falls out
Yeah that's awesome nice simple explanation thanks for sharing
Looking to lift the front of my 91 xj by replacing stock coil springs and 2 in spacer with a 3 in coil from rustys offroad. don't have anything heavy in the front. what would you recommend rustys heavy duty or standard duty. My off roading consists of back roads and surf fishing its also my daily driver. Thanks love your videos.
Great bid. Thanks for all you do.
No BPE's what's up with that?
Hey man, I am wanting to do a 3 inch lift on my 94 XJ sport. What all will I need to do, besides install the lift? I know brake lines, but what about control arms and longer shocks
Seems he just created another time bomb. Most people seem to do this and not noticed that they have transferred that tension from the vehicle to a loaded gun.
Is this why my XJ leans one way to the right? too much 4 wheeling? It is sagged down about 1-2 inches!
Same question for leafs in the back
Please can I install the 2011 Jeep springs on my 2008 Jeep
Because the springs are not available for my 2008 model
Quick question i have a jeep cherokee that needs shocks all four of them its a 99 jeep cherokee sport if you could make a video on that it would be greatly appreciated thank you.
When did the strut replacement happen? That would have been nice to see.
bleepinjeep I suppose it is the coil spacer I was seeing. The beginning of the video doesn't show that. Perhaps I skipped over where you made that installation. (The "ACOS" thing.)
bleepinjeep Okay, I went back over your vid.'s...this here is a condensed version of an earlier /later video where you do the adj. coil over spring. Thanks.
Isnt it better to apply spring compressor while its loaded with weight.......and then jack up car?
Is it?
Will be replacing bump stops and cups on my 96 ZJ stock height, will I need to remove the spring and what holds it in?
Bolt or stud, badly rusted
I'm putting in a lift kit how do I get the rear coil springs out on a 98 Jeep grand Cherokee Laredo
I over torque the retainer bolt and I stripped out the hole. Do you happen to know of a part number to the next size over bolt?
Excellent videos ! 👍🏻
GODDAMN LOL CHANGE THAT SHOCK TOO
Finally a good concise demo video on coil spring install & tips - excellent job dude.
I like that pipe wrench trick to position the spring
have a stock 94 dodge ram 1500 4x4 and found a set of 2'' used skyjacker front coil springs. and they look in pretty good shape do you think it would be good to use them ??
Have you experience how to replace the lower coil spring seat (bucket) on 96 dodge ram1500?
what the best coils i can run for a lift of about 2in without pucks or spacers uncle owns salvage yard and theres plenty of coil springs laying around just need to know what to grab to get some lift
Zj with a v8 but it's not certain how much lift you'll get. You might just want to get spacers or new springs.
Nice jack lowering hahahaha. and you definately aren't doing that safely around 6:00
Would have been a lot easier to just pull the shock too.. one bolt up top..
I'm assuming he left the shock in place so that if compressor failed, spring cant shoot out, pretty good idea I think.
@@MrMustangred Nah... that's not the shock, lol. The shock he's talking about is the brown and white thing to the left of the spring.
Please as it is called the cylinder with rubber that changed and goes on top
Hi Matt I just bought a 2003 Jeep Grand cherokee special edition with a 2" lift. I have a hard rubber part lose inside the spring, I was told it might be a bump stop. I dont see any videos with a bump stop inside a spring. What do you think. When I buy suspension items do I buy different sized items because of my lift? Also, how do you know when your sring needs replaced?
If you use a coil spring from a grand Cherokee to add a bit of lift are there any other modifications that need to be done?
How long does the original bump stop and spring last? Ive got 193K on my jeep and it might be next years project. Also I did all the tie rods and drag links, and trac bar, and it's all nice and tight but it seems now I have a little play in the steering system a bit now. Around what I think is the gear box? Maybe
Is it somekind of special machine that u use to umm... compress? The springs? So that you can get them out
Coil spring compressor. Rent one from your local auto parts store.
Yah thanks, was late at night my brain could not figure it out as obvious as it was... :D
I took mine off and replaced it jus using flatheads and removing a shock
A coil spring might break but whether there is a reason to change a coil spring if it is not broken, is not being discussed in this video.
for lift.
How long do springs last. I need to just replace the spacer at the top? I've got 195K on mine and they seem fine but can they go bad?
Maybe use the compressors the other way up, and tighten them from the top, if you have room.
Can a spring compressor collapse, or break? I must change the springs on my car, even though it''s a small hatckback -> so small springs, I have this kind of fear.
if possible you can drop everything out from underneath and not have to compress the spring.
Just load the spring and you can put the compressor on by hand👍
What is the thing above the spring /coil called. I think it's something that helps if you bottom out, but I don't what it is called. Cause I need the rubber bumbers, I think that's what they called but I'm not sure, if anyone can help I would be appriative
