Today I talk with KB, the creator behind the UA-cam channel Knowing Better, about his experience as a UA-camr that covers social/political content, the shifts he's made in his thinking over the years informed by his experience in the military and as an educator, and the reckoning the US is currently experiencing over the more unsavory elements of our collective past.

I think this is the most important UA-cam video you have made so far, incredibly important topics.
Do not think it is negative to discover that you have made a mistake and that society is not the way you want it to be portrayed.
It never gets better if no one does anything about it.
Hope you continue to educate and shake up trust in society. The United States needs it.

I saw the Knowing Better episode about slavery and Jim Crow. You pointed out that the last case of legal slavery was in 1942. There was a reason for the civil rights movement. We have made a lot of progress in 80 years. Of course we still have privilege, but how much is due to race and how much to wealth and celebrity? How many of us accused of murdering your ex-wife and her boyfriend would be told , "just drive your Ford Bronco by when you get a chance, and we'll set you up."

    • @jmacd8817

Um, slavery is still legal. There’s an exception in the 13th Amendment that specifically allows it: convicted criminals are considered legal slaves. At least as far as the Constitution goes. I think some states have laws completely banning it.

  • @AlBarathur

Allow me to point to a mistake if I may. Things that change or evolve with time, are not always bound to all associations that were linked to their starting point or their origins.
Every conspiracy theory nuts fall for that.
Let me offer an analogy: you have a backpack that you used to use to carry your sweaty clothes.
Then you stopped using it for that usage and for the longest time have been using that backpack to other things that are no longer related to the original use. That backpack will be known as "my gym backpack" only by you, because in reality it is no longer your gym backpack.
And to put an end to the story, when you die, if you did not spend your whole life referring to your general use backpack as your gym backpack, if you let that "association" to die, your son will see your backpack and maybe take it home and show to his kids: this is grampa's backpack.
When the reality of usage is terminated, the former relationships of meaning are also terminated when those maintaining those associations stop doing it.
All of us have the genes that are related to the worse scum on the planet. All institutions are associated with evil, all countries only exist because of bloodshed, all power was only established by violence IN THE PAST. Its up for us now to make it better. Do you think the indians that the americans "murdered" did not murder each other and tribes did not fight each other, shedding each other's blood, before the americans arrived? The reason why power is established is to stop the bloodshed, but the establishment of power itself requires bloodshed. Things come to us, from the world in which they existed. Its up for us to do what we can to reduce human suffering.
Aside from reducing needless suffering, there is no reason to judge anything morally regarding their origins because everything come from the same stock. Unless that thing continues somehow to enforce those negative values.
America is America. Its not the good guys neither the bad guys. Its a country and like every other country, in their own specific way, established in violence and bloodshed. We humans, have not found yet a way to establish power without causing some level of oppression. A thing must not be forever bound to its origins, else we will not be able to produce the kind of incremental progress that we must. That is true for you as a person and for all things that evolve and can be changed with time.
In the specific case of racism, victory is not having all those institutions destroyed, which have in the past allowed for racism. But victory is to occupy them, and change them for the better, with the goal of reducing human suffering, and not the goal of fulfilling some ideology. Because ideologies are also murderous and evil.

Keeping ferrets caged isn't for me- I've always let mine run free- but they are anything but a part time pet if you do so. They're like little monkeys- they can get into anything- they can squeeze through tiny spaces, they can open cabinet doors, they can turn the faucet on and off, etc. - I had to literally ferret proof my home. Every morning they wake me up at 6 am on the dot- dancing on my chest and chattering like little squirrels- they want to be turned out. I have a series of tubes that run from inside the house to a cage outside- and they want to get in the tubes and play. They chase one another and wrestle- I love my ferrets, they're awesome. I have an albino named Cha Cha and a regular grey/black colored ferret named Tricks.

    • @JohnDoe-mk5zb
      @JohnDoe-mk5zb 2 роки тому

This is true. It's also pretty good advice when you wake up to a home invasion. Resisting a robbery makes you way more likely to die. Also, I've almost been shot for DOING what the police told me, cause they weren't communicating with each other. The fact that a person has to enter an encounter with the police thinking, "How do I survive this?" means things are far past the point of tolerance. The shenanigans and outright illegal behavior, or immoral behavior codified into law, puts people in a position far, far too close to the same as dealing with a violent criminal. Doing the right thing, not submitting to thugs doing immoral and often actually illegal things, is punishable by death.

Hi Joe, I'm really enjoying the new channel...I know that you gave a content warning before the video, but I still had to comment on some of the topics. When you made a said your friend won't buy a tesla by he will get pulled over?!? I realize it's antidotal, but it's still not accurate. Cadillac, Lincoln, BMW, Mercedes and Lexus have been popular in the black community for generations.

It depends on where you live I reckon. It may be “anecdotal”, but it’s not all that unusual to hear stories like Joe’s in the South.

One other thing...I don't understand why anyone wouldn't explain to their kids what to do if they get pulled over. My dad was clear when I got my license, and I had the same conversation when my kid got a license. Skin color doesn't matter at all, and data supports that (see the FBI stats.) If you don't believe me, check out what Thomas Sowell and Larry Elder have to say about it.

You kids are cute. Disillusioned but cute. The next step is going to be fun for you. Hopefully you'll choose the "make the values of the myths into practice" path rather that the path of resentment, anger, and virtue signaling but that's for you to choose.

I took the "This is the way things are and there's probably a not a whole lot that I can do about it, so I'm just gonna live my life and not worry about it so much" path. How about you?

This was enlightening. I learned there are a lot of bad apples spoiling the bunch. Also I learned that egos are bigger than I thought, much earlier in the process than I would have thougt possible. I like you and ALL UA-camrs less than I did before. Y'all aint that famous. KB seems full of himself and Joe, you seemed to latch right on to his way of thinking. This guy was a waste of an interview. Nowhere near the caliber of guest you have been having.

Do you think it's possible that Joe, a grown man, already had those opinions and happened to agree with KB on many points? Why did he have to "latch on" to KB? That's an interesting way of putting it, and it betrays a certain way of thinking that you might benefit from exploring.
I found the interview very interesting. You didn't. That's fine, but saying it's a waste suggests you have a very binary way of thinking. I think you need to mellow out a bit, to be honest.

Omg...I thought I was done with my last comment, but the half truths keep coming. I wish you had called KB out on this one. Slavery was absolutely abolished with the 13th ammendment in Dec 1865. His justification for the 13th not being effective is ridiculous. Please point to any other ammendment that outlines a punishment (like serving 10 years) for anyone who breaks the law.

You’re getting caught up with the semantics. They point is they didn’t bother to draft legislation subordinate to the new amendment until the 20th century
