Dropping Science With Neil Degrasse Tyson | Conversations With Joe Ep. 3

- In this episode I had the pleasure to meet with Neil Degrasse Tyson, who gives me the lowdown his life as a science communicator, the incredible explosion of technology that we're all living through, and the little inspirations that guided his career along the way. It's a fascinating look at what drives one of the most famous science communicators in the world.

I listened to this interview whilst driving to work this morning. I drove around until it ended, and now I'm late for work. Thank you Joe!

This could have been eight hours and I would have listened to every word. Well played Joe....well played.
I love NdT, always have, always will. He can come across as a little elitist some times though. Which is great if he schooling some fools, but in this example I just wish he’d give Joe some credit as a fellow science communicator. Joe’s down-to-earth nature and alignment with his views complements NdT’s mission, so to at times be somewhat flippant and a tad condescending towards Joe is counter-productive. All-in-all this was a great watch though, I’d love a weekly session with these two! ;)
I should point out that things got better over time, was a little worse during the first half ;)
*Great interview! And it was refreshing to see (yet again) Dr. Tyson's humility, and to see and hear just how grounded the man truly is in every aspect of his life. Imagine if everyone, or even just more of our society, was as patient and as accommodating as Dr. Tyson has always been. The long, seemingly torturous intro was well worth your pain! Well done!!*
The dude is not humble. He is smart but Neil degrasse Tyson is a professional at cutting people off. Sometimes I really want to just listen to the star talk guests. He had the nerve to call out Joe about 'awesome' and then condescend him on his opinions. He is interesting to listen to and explains things well, but he definitely has an ego.
Yeah, for sure not humble...
Dude, I'm so proud of you!!! I can't believe I missed this up until now, this is a big moment. Joe, you're a legend. Big fan of Neil Degrasse Tyson. ✨
What a perfect video for my birthday! Pretty awesome to hear Neil Degrasse Tyson say "You're listening to... Answers With Joe".
hope you had a sweet birthday dude!
It never gets old with this guy
Super awesome interview - you really decimated Neil with the grammar pet peeves.
Keep up the great work!
Awesome 🤣
I think, Neil will go down as one of those GREAT people of our time. I can't not stop and listen when he starts talking. Thank you Joe. Thanks for opening these videos to us ALL. A real public service by making them available to us all.
Tyson is one of the GREAT bull shitters of our time. A source of bad math, wrong science and false history. And his following is too clueless to notice.
Great people of our time???
How can a man who’s lying to humanity about where they live be great???
Please explain
The sequence of the 30 year intervals, starting from 28:09, really spoke to me! 😀 I can't wait to find out what humanity will have achieved by 2050.
We can expect Reddit video to be working properly by then. I'm optimistic.
How did I miss this episode of "Answers with Joe"?! Neil DeGrasse Tyson Is a science hero to me! (I still tear up when I think about how he was selected by, then later met in person, Carl Sagan). I still listen to every Star Talk episode!
Listening to Neil Degrasse Tyson and Joe Scott talking is music to my ears.
Have to agree with Texas being short on planetariums, as a kid growing up in Texas my first exposure to a planetarium was vacationing in San Diego and going to the MOSH. The moment the lights went off and the planetarium turned on, I was transported off earth lol (I am reminded of being that kid in Texas and playing with my friends out in the country without any light pollution and just being amazed how lively the night sky was. Later in life that experience would be trumped on the surface of the middle of the Atlantic topside on the sub with all running lights off. The sky kissed the oceans horizon and at times felt like we were onboard starship Yamato LOL
Houston Texan here that fell asleep in the Houston planetarium with Mr. Tyson narrating the show. 🤣
I'm from North Texas. I didn't even know what a planetarium was until I moved out of there. But I grew up in a small town so I got to look at the stars every night.

Hands down one of the best interviews done with NDT 👌 Kudos to you Joe ❤
I just love listening to Neil deGrasse Tyson - great conversation, Joe! Really enjoying this podcast. Keep up the great work.
I enjoyed the intro. I learned things about him that I didn’t know before.
Yes Joe! Loved when you said let me defend myself. I love Niel as we all do, but "I don't like intros" whaaatt come on Niel You do them exactly the same!
Thanks for uploading all of your podcasts, I love your questions plz keep up the good work bro
Amazing, thanks for uploading Joe!
The prognosticator of prognosticators, and personal hero Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson
Neil No Grass Tyson is “awesome”! Great interview, homie! ✊🏾
I just want to point out joe, i think you felt a bit awkward with the interview because sometimes when NDT gets going he just keeps going and then it's just like "what do i say, when do i butt in, how do i contribute to the conversation" and i just wanna let you know that's how literally all of his interviews go lol. His appearance on rogan was exactly the same, rogan was even getting frustrated that he didn't have a minute to say anything.
You did really well and had a good conversation with him, I loved the conversation about the shows, and science communication and such, and as a diehard listener of Star talk i enjoyed your interview with him more than any recent Star talk episode
Here's my thumbs up sir. This was... wait for it... AWESOME! ;)
Loved every seconds of it.
Great intro i had no idea he really did achive so much and actually spent the time to get those degrees and everything. So thanks for that cuz ive listened to him over several years and never knew the extent of his acomplishments. How or where his actual qualifications are from
You were so nervous lol. Enjoyed that. Keep going
your "live" introduction was great. don't sweat it 👍✌️
Brooklyn NY loves StarTalk and Dr. Tyson (Brooklyn claims Dr. Tyson as one of our own) SOLID episode
absolutely loved this
This was awesome ❤️
I’m enjoying everything episode ! Thank you so much Joe ❤️
Yoo! This is so cool! My 2 favorite science communicators in one video!
I know im late.. but i just watched this, and i started at episode one, ive watch alot of NDT but, this, was hands down one of my favorite discussions, thanks Joe, you're alot of fun, and NDT is always a blast.. Cant wait to catch up!
DAMN Dude. This is awesome. Looking forward to listening to this now.
Next movie about space should hire Neil to handle the facts. Also I’d like to thank you both for fueling my quest for knowledge throughout these past few years.
Of all the things I have heard NDT talk about, I have already heard before, but will still listen…but there was one thing I have never knew: the tides! NDT explained the tides sooooooo brilliantly, that I will forever remember him for that, even though I have heard sooooooo much from him.
I feel like I found a gold mine of content from your channels ever since I discovered you on Fraser fain recently.
The best conversation. Rewatching.....
Great fun interview. I love listening to Tyson, he just values information and learning, it's always worth listening to conversations with him.
Thanks Joe, and Dr. Neil
These are great man! Keep it up 👍
I love you videos. This is one of the best. Thanks
I listen to Star Talk a lot and anything else with Neil. I really like how different this is. You gave him questions that most people don't ask. It's different and it's a real conversation. Not a science show.
Man this new channel is something else. All my favourite people!
He is beyond awesome.
45:54 "Contact" wasn't about an asteroid strike, Neil, it was about first contact with extraterrestrial intelligence.
I agree that it's one of the best sci-fi movies ever made.
I think that must have been a weird slip of the tongue? It makes no sense that Tyson wouldn't know the plot of a Sagan film, Sagan bring an early mentor of his
I think Tyson might be referring to the movie Deep Impact, not Contact.
I love talking to people known for one profession about their hobbies and loves. I once got to interview Colonel Chris Hadfield about his favorite music growing up and how he managed to get a guitar into the ISS.
Thank you, Dr Neil DegrasseTyson!
Thank you, Joe, for doing such a vivid interview.
Two of my favorite people 🤩
How come I didn't see this earlier 😢
awesome show
Fantastic. Thank you Joe.
Excellent!
So happy for you, Joe !!!
This podcast... Is awesome.
Neil Tyson should make a kids TV show of his first book, sounds interesting
Ask Neil anything... Like 'why does 1+1 equal 2?' and 20 minutes later you will find yourself still on the edge of your sea! I remember listening to Astro Physics for those in a hurry... I had a hard time focusing on both the audiobook and driving. Thank you, Joe.
Congratulations, Joe!
Merlin, Stargate, galaxy travels, I sense Stargate SG1 picked that genre and made the most wonderful series that ever existed.
Omg!! Epic duo! Awesome
Neil Degrass Tyson will always be the sexiest astrophysicist in my book!
That looks hard. Nice long conversations.😎congratulations
Ahhh!! So rad!! We love Neil! 🤩
Aww the look on Joe's face during the introduction, so cute 😊
Great job Joe!
Your honesty, and just being a down to earth guy is great!
The whole deal is just great man!
I've been following you for over 2 years, Joe. Keep up with with refining your interview skills. It's fun to listen you already. You're already 20x than Jimmy Fallon. (I know, low bar)
I love when Neil is on and you know he's in NY because of the random police sirens that you can hear in the background.
Thanks, Joe.
Does it really surprise anyone that in the U.S. people misunderstand and misuse metric terminology? Thanks for a great interview Joe!
I can’t wait to listen to this whole thing. Very cool stuff. I just wanted to say right off the bat, thank you to Neil Degrass Tyson for being so awesome and just making science accessible and cool. And kudos to Joe. I totally agree with the need to lie down. Had this been me, the intensity of my geek out would have me non-functional for at least a week. 😂
Really awesome
7:02 guy is always bringing great thoughts forward
Conversations with Joe….GREAT IDEA!!!😀😀😀
It feels like Neil has looked like he's about 55 years old for the last 20 years. I have no idea how old he actually is.
*looksitup* Oh, he looks young for his age.
I didn't know the definition of decimate until now, very interesting
Love this,, Good stuf Joe,,
Been a fan of Joe since the days his channel was still pretty small. It's nice to see he's built up the credentials to pull in these big names onto his channel.
Second guest ever is Niel Tyson! Sheessh!!
The silver lining for me is knowing everything will die and I will not be left here while everyone left the party. I believe everything goes somewhere and even science knows energy does not cease to exist.
Science knows about energy, however spiritual enlightenment is where Personality finds the eternal journey.
@@steveflorida8699 Perhaps looking inward we can find a place as vast as looking outward. I would dare to say more vast. That's where I have issue with science that does not come from a holistic view or assumes a hypothetical point of view observing physics. But the spiritual ones should not forget about matter. Yes spiritual enlightenment observes immortality instead of mortality where even the universe dies. I think life is eternal.
Brilliant, funny, and entertaining!
Joe: Interviewing someone is not easy because you have to sit there talking about them while they're looking at you. But I'll try.
Neil: Imma tell you what I don't like about your intro
JC I both love and hate Neil. Good thing Joe is good at what he does.
There were 999 likes on this, so I had to give you the 1k :)
Great podcast Joe!
The intro resume was only a little long, and it instantly created topics of conversation! :)
That one is definitely a nerds wet dream come true. Thanks!
Wish I could give it two thumbs up👍
Quantum leap I thought of as "step wise" change rather than large like ndt said instantaneous and complete (like quanta or packets of energy we call photons). Honestly never thought about the tie between the word quantum and and QED or studying small things when hearing quantum leap.
Cheers Joe
I love Neil, always like to hear what he has to say. “Awesome” that he came on the channel. Lol
Gotta call you out Neil the benefit of hovering above the ground opposed to rolling over all the cracks and pebbles cannot be understated. The amount of broken bones that can be saved is nearly immeasurable.
Great interview!
Key question Joe - are you wearing glasses to read or was this filmed longer ago than we think?
Has to older because he just started this channel a day ago & he’s posted like 16 or more videos.
Nice
to me two legends i look up to !
I was just comparing my reaction to the power being out when I was a kid vs how I react today. When I was young the internet was just coming into its own. Now just going a full several hours without a connection is excruciating
36:09 “Back to the Future Part II“ got a few things right like the glasses and the automated home. (They missed on the flying cars.)
Amazing 😅
Joe Scott please advertise this channel on your main Joe Scott channel please lol
Hope you have Dr. Zubrin on soon 🙂
That was fun😃
I want to see The Martian now on any of my streaming platforms, turns out this movie from 2015 is still only up for rent or purchase. 🙁
Go Joe!!!! Lol. You rock 🎸
22:08 Okay my thing is when people use the word “quarantine“. A three day quarantine… A two week quarantine… A quarantine means that somebody is isolated for 40 days.
I heard of honorary degrees that probably don't matter but I liked the anecdote Neil shared. If NDT gets an honorary degree then it's legit
When will curiosity stream be available in Australia via smart tvs 🤔, fetch box 🤷🏽♂️
Hey, Neil, the part about hoverboards: it’s not that they lift you off the ground two inches, it’s the fact that it can do that _without_ the wheels
I don’t skate but I know enough skaters to know this: they love those wheels but would drop em into the nearest black hole for the prospect of wheel-less skateboarding
Water will always be an issue, sure, that’s a given for any wheel-based transport, but you know what really stops a skater (besides guards, cops, obvious dangers)?

Hoverboards are _SOOO_ much more than a couple inches of lift, Neil
Not a huge fan of Neil but that was definitely worth watching. Some interesting conversation on some topics that don't always get covered and Neil only started to ruin it towards the end.
