Gi Jiu Jitsu clearly does have relevance to self-defence. If you fight someone wearing a jacket and/or pair of jeans, a lot of Gi specific techniques will be applicable to that situation. Having said that I prefer no-gi. I hate being slowed down by grips.
In theory you could apply gi chokes using most kinds of shirt. Not a t-shirt or a sweater, but office shirts, flannels shirts etc. you'd need to rip a few buttons first though. I've only been training a few months but I think both styles can make your self-defence better if you're smart about it.
I remember as a teen I pissed off an old guy. He grabbed my jacket edges and pulled it over my head hockey style. I felt stupid and helpless. Train both.
Jorden Leonard shoulda took his legs dumbass quit listing to Gracie propaganda probably not a real story tbh a dumbass woulda knew to shoot a double leg and slam him into oblivion
Understanding that clothes are a potential weapon is something that BJJ brought to my awareness. I have choked someone out with the collar on their T-shirt. Yes, it could have ripped, but it didn't so it worked. I never thought about such a move until I took some BJJ.
I really like the way Eddie observed the traditional and set out to correct flaws he noticed. Same as what Bruce Lee did. And I heard that Jean Jaques' BJJ is heavily clinch based.
I've been a martial artist ALL my life. Started at 7 and a couple of hours ago I turned 61! I have teaching grades in MANY styles. To be totally honest though, my ground game is crap! Total crap! So, as my interest in grappling is in relation to self defense, this "no gi" thing makes sense to me. There is 10th Planet club not far from where I live (Scotland) and I am thinking that maybe I will join in. Maybe they will think I'm just an old fool but I really would like to learn this stuff. I'll give it some thought.
I trained in Gi BJJ, thinking I did not need to learn NoGi until I reached the brown belt level. Well, I was wrong and recently got smashed by my cousin that trains in NoGi BJJ. I am switching to 10th Planet BJJ and joining my cousin.
I was wondering what all the bad hype was with this guy. On paper that seems like a pretty legit concept. Starting to think the negativity is all about the flat earth thing. I get that. It's stupid. The planet is round. Now IDK what Mike Tyson's take is on flat earth or foreign policy, string theory, wages in America, or what could be done better with the schools. If it all turns out disappointing, I'm not going to turn around and say he doesn't know how to hit.
I would say start with wrestling and nogi jujitsu, practice gi occasionally since it's fun, by only rely on clinching because that is what you train for. If the aggressor has a jacket or something to tug on like a Gi, then grip the jacket or grips certain items of clothing but always come back to clinching since it's 99% of combative situations.
I agree with this guy, I’ve doing Jiu-Jitsu for a year now and I always play a self defense fight in my head and always run into the problem of how to clinch to take the opponent down and from there start my game.
NO-Gi is far more realistic for the streets and MMA. Gi is more complex and not as realistic. I do the no-gi and only started 3 weeks ago but I feel I can be a good white belt by December
Its possible. I did a year or so in a small mma program which ended so I joined the BJJ class that they had instead of leaving the gym entirely and I would be able to u9or my own against most blue belts, sometimes even make them tap in no gi. But I had learned wrong aggressive mma style of submission grappling which would really show when without a gi. I'd be able to slip out of so much of the other guys subs and holds. Being a smaller gym it didn't have the most diverse range of skills and body types. Being 6'2" and 180-185lbs in peak shape, I was one if the ones in the upper percentiles when it came to conditioning and strength besides a few other dudes who were stronger, in better condition, or had me beat in athletic weight. I remember not too long into my training, this high school varsity wrestler (already graduated and was in late teens early 20s) didnt take too long to get to where I could submit him like I used to because he learned a little defense and had all those years of wrestling. Not to mention he easily had a good 15 maybe 20lbs of solid athletic muscle over me, aswell as an inch of height, and a good bit of reach over me. I learned real quick how some people just develop really fast (well, he already had years more of grappling over me, but lacked the submission skills but it was easier for him to defend against BJJ guys after 3-6 months than it was for the BJJ guys to control or get the best of him. I've always had good takedown defense, but once I developed my TDD skills, I got even better. But he was the first to ever rankle pick me which he was really good at. He could shoot in really low and get a hold of me cause of his size and reach, and he was the one of the only few who could take me down. I'm a rather lanky but strong in weird ways kind of guy, but he was built pretty solid with muscle. Much more filler out. Just as I came in and quickly learned to defend myself agaisnt those who've trained for longer, he did the same to me. Eventually it got to where grappling was a stalemate, or he would work mr into positions but not be able to tap me. Striking is where I had days where I was the better man that day. But his reach was a problem. I wish there were more people 6'2" or taller back when I still trained but since I wasn't used to being the shorter, smaller, less muscular dude (there were people bigger but they usually had a decent amount of fat) sometimes it would throw me off. Also training with people of higher skills can sometimes get to where you can do decent or hold your own against higher skilled people only cause you 2 train together often and you can predict his patterns and tendencies. I learned that when some Gracie JJ students came into our gym and we would sometiems hit each other with stuff foreign to ther other. But they're good white belts werw like our average blue belts. Their blue were like our low level purple belts. Being worse in gi and only a white belt, they actually gave me a challenge. Them some other mma guys from a few different gyms came one Saturday and we trained and we all had areas where the other wasnt as good. The places that didnt have a cage like us couldnt use the cage to their advantage like I could. Even blue and purple belts who could submit me were getting their legs yanked out form underneath them when against the cage by me. I got one guy good and yanked his legs out hard cause we had a great moderately or good intensity spar. Some couldn't even take me down even of they could submit me on the ground.
not totally accurate to see more realisty because unless you're fighting somebody at the beach, they will be wearing clothing. And there are a handful of gi chokes that translate, with modification, over to a street fight/wear. beyond blue belt you don't need more gi. but learn as much as possible while you get there esecpially what translates over
We train both Gi and no gi. And my prof is a current high level MMA fighter. The gym’s philosophy is that since the gi slows you down some that your jiu jitsu fundamentals have to be much stronger when wearing a gi. Where without a gi it’s easier to move and get positions. No gi is also important for all the reasons that Eddy highlighted in his video. So we train in the gi 3 times a week and no gi 2 times per week. The gym also offers MMA-specific grappling classes as well (they work on a lot of position, control with ground and pound). The results is that no matter what type of match, the fighters are the gym I go to do really well overall.
What Eddie says is correct. I will add one thing though about gi training that gets lost without the gi. Learn escapes with the gi on. It is much, much harder to slip out with the gi on and that makes you become more technical and your escapes and defences become much stronger.

I’m training at a Gracie academy, which I love, but I do kind of agree with the “handles” argument. I always thought 10th Planet was all about sport JJ, which does not interest me. I am interested in self defense. Very interesting.
@Sam most dudes in fights out here California, remove sweaters and the like for a fight, go see how many fights involve people taking their sweaters off to get down, and I've been in so many fights it just sounds like you haven't usually the first thing I do is throw dudes and it usually rips shirt or sweater right off, so either these dudes got extremely durable clothing or your weak sauce when you get down
I train at a Relson Gracie gym. We train strictly self defense, but if anyone wants to compete we're down. We also do both gi, no gi, and Dutch Muay Thai. So we get it all. I like both gi and no gi. I think they both serve some purposes. I guess as far as the training you get it depends on what your academy offers.
Definitely depends on which Gracie. I am a Renzo Gracie academy. The training is following Carlos Gracie Sr. That’s sport base jujutsu. Doesn’t train you for possible street situation.
what eddie got wrong is putting submission and sweeps ahead of getting up, would of been better of creating 30 ways to get up from the clinching guards, what works in mma is / in and out striking ie a mixture of muay thai and boxing, and constant never ending forward pressure in clinches and take downs, and advancing top control positions until you either ko them or get a submission, if you end up on your back, get up and start again. a few fights are won with subs off the back from guard but it should be plan z not plan a or b. submission wizzards like ryan hall etc clean out lower ranks but cant hang at highest levels of the sport were people avoid their tricks
I agree on your comment explaining how getting up from your back is important but that’s something that is already taught in wrestling. That’s something that needs heavy focus on (danaher said this as well), but bjj school lack wrestling very heavily
Eddie prepares for competition at the highest level, which is against professional mixed martial artists. Against an average person you’ll be safe with good experience in almost any self defense art. I’ve won fights using dirty TKD that would get me destroyed against a novice BJJ practitioner.
I'm a white belt in jujitsu but a blackbelt in CHE-LU KARATE and in my own opinion with the gi or no gi is when you first start training jujitsu I think the gi limits you to performing good technique only, its harder to move around in the gi unless you have the good technique but after blue belt I think no gi would be best for street fighting not just depending on handles cause everyday cloths will not hold up to a good grip but then I think maybe your creating bad habits by always using a gi this is a very good question so I'd have to say train both but be more focused on no gi of your just training for street defense not competition but I'm just a white belt in jiujitsu so maybe I shouldn't comment
When I do no gi I find that my style and preferences of fighting are exactly the same. It’s mainly because I use a lot of wrist grips and neck grips as well as rely heavily on head control and my ability to slip into mount easily. However is I train more no gi I think my gi game will actually improve because it’ll force me to learn the grips and under hooks more effectively
this is why i go there, but havent learned shit about clinching thus far and i went against a wrestler today and got sprawled to death..i had no answer.. im new but damn
sometimes people arent wearing gi like clothing, but whenever you or the other guy is wearing any clothing with sleeves and a collar and it won't rip (which is a large proportion of time), the gi stuff is a weapon you can use and can be used on you. It's important that it exists.
@@Gainsforlife it doesn't have to be a kimono, a hoodie will do, any kind 9f jacket at all as well. Most fights happen at night whe people are slightly more dressed also I always where a jacket so it's good to know how to defend myself in one. There is space for both gi no gi tbh it doesn't have to be either or
@@internetenjoyer1044 lmao you sound very inexperienced. Most people who love to fight will take off their shirts. Even if they didn’t to be able to touch their clothes means you’re already in striking distance. Please sit down and refrain from making anymore ignorant comments
I'm a white belt training in gi and no gi, and I hate lapel chokes and grabbing onto stuff a lot because I know it wont be realistic in a real fight. It's almost like cheating when you have all this stuff to hang on to. I really don't know why the Brazilians and the traditional jiu jitsu practitioners have a cult-like attachment to the gi. Gasp! Did I just say that. Yes, calm down. I did. When you get in a fight, you're likely not going to have all that shit to hang on to. I really don't get it. But my question is.... is the 10th planet a sphere or flat?
Most of the time people will have clothes on. They have pockets in their pants, they have a shirt with a collar, they have a jacket, hell even shoes are a handle you don't even get to use in gi BJJ. If you're really new, just dead this whole gi vs no gi thing, it's a stupid debate that ended a long time ago. You'll be better off learning everything if your goal is to be prepared. Eddie Bravo trains guys who can get punched in the face by someone with some experience in an MMA fight, which is the last thing he says. Eddie Bravo and Marcelo Garcia were the people I based my game off of. One is vehemently no gi but looks up to the other who trains both, dominates both, and emphasizes the importance of gi. I came to understand that the reason Marcelo emphasizes gi is not because of the gi itself, but the body's sensitivity to different stimulae. There's things you both do and don't have to worry about when you change the environment, the important thing is that your jiu-jitsu style is fully itself in every element it might find itself in or you're cheating yourself a bit if you just don't train one part. It really makes a huge difference for both versions to train the other in my experience.
@antimortemI think grabbing is fine, it's when you HOLD on to it for dear life as your last lifeline that's where the issue is. But just like in BJJ you gotta know when to hold on vs. to let go.
No one fights shirtless anymore. Everyone has either a jacket or a t-shirt. Transition from gi to no gi is literally instant. It takes no effort to go from gi to nogi. There are very few things you can't do to a t-shirt you can do with a gi.
If a no gi black belt was wearing a jacket and pants in the winter time and happened to get into a fight with another black belt, but one who only trains in the gi, both being equal in size and strength, what would be the probable outcome?
you need to learn both to have a complete bjj skillset. but imo you should build a solid foundation in the gi first, since it’s an easier transition to have cloth grips to suddenly having none than the other way around.
Everyone arguing about whether training Gi or No Gi is better for a street fight. In my experience most street fights take place between groups, the last thing I’m gonna do is try and submit a guy whilst his friends stamp on me.
I get it when people say the Gi represents people's clothing. But in all honesty if you grab clothes the same way you grab some ones Gi then the clothes will rip. So you can't compare a Gi to everyday clothes. However I think you should train both Gi and No Gi.
Can replace yoga with simple stretching, also your aren’t a “wild” power house, you’re a “dangerous” power house Women won’t sleep with you just because your train martial arts
Heres what it boils down to.. If you only train no gi.. you will be terrible in the gi.. if you train gi you can still have a grasp on no gi. its simple train both.
I respect 10th Planet's techniques and strategies, but I don't agree that if you are prepared for MMA you are prepared for street. MMA has a lot more rules, time limits, weight divisions, judges, etc. I do however think that 10th Planet will be more effective in the street than sport Jiu Jitsu, so, respect for that as far as that goes. Well done Eddie Bravo.
Eddie, you're a total stud! However, we often forget most people wear clothes on the street providing handles (not as good as a gi, but handles nonetheless), no? This is why I think, though MMA fighters are very well trained for any fight, wearing only shorts is a bit unrealistic for many street fights.
mr vengeance a lot of people take off coats and shirts when they fight or what about guys who wear shorts. Wrestlers in street fights usually win 1 on 1 fights becuase they don't need clothes so why not bjj
Gi is good to learn jiu jitsu. It’s slower and you can learn the concepts alot more indepth in gi. But I like no gi better because it’s just more fun, and it has more transfer to mma.
Gracie Jiu Jitsu never gave a crap about the punching and always invited it with their Gracie Challenge. Their way was 💯 Self Defense; unfortunately, BJJ was not ready for the punches and/or weapons.
Also, at my level we have yet to do a grab or choke based on a gi. That means that even when I do get there, I'll already have a foundation of not using/relying on it. Plus, we focus on going for the clinch, getting to the mount, only fighting from guard if that's where the fight ends up, and resetting back to the feet if in a losing position... Basically, everything he addressed in is video. Still, it's good he created a new system though. Im sure there's some good shit to learn with that system.
Interesting. Like It. But not new. Old time jiu jitsu used to have a thing called "taparia". No gi, slaps... That was the way to train for a street fight. Also recomend to search for luta livre esportiva. Anyway, like the style. It's bringing back the old jiu.
It's incredibly difficult to listen to a guy talk about how his jiu jitsu is the best for mma when he has never fought in an mma match himself. It's almost safe to say his system is based on theory. Not trying to disrespect Squiggy, he's got a great system and pumps out some great students and all, but I think he should say his system works best for NO GI jiu jitsu competition. Thoughts?
Hello Mr. Weed. When he said best for MMA he meant not depending on a Gi. Since you are not allow to wear Gi in MMA, what he said became fact and not theory. MMA jiujitsu = No Gi jiu-jitsu if you would like to look at it that way.

jits lifts thanks for the advice! Yeh ima go try it out! Maybe I’ll sign up! I heard nothing but good things about most 10th planets.
Thanks Eddie! Both for the rubber guard and this vid that made it clear i need to stretch in a certain way. Cant wait to try rubber on my coach!
Eddjie Brah!
Man dog the man, ..man that's cool man
Is that misery business in the back? Lol
The talk on clinching is so simple yet so smart. I wish I could train 10th planet bjj. For now I'll do folk/greco wrestling and when I can kickboxing.
@Chris Bruhne I want that to be my base. I actually got into wrestling because of mma and not the reverse.
Don't the Gracies train both ways?
William Sullivan depends which Gracie due to helio and Carlos
I train at a Relson Gracie gym. We train strictly self defense, but if anyone wants to compete we're down. We also do both gi, no gi, and Dutch Muay Thai. So we get it all. I like both gi and no gi. I think they both serve some purposes. I guess as far as the training you get it depends on what your academy offers.
Yes
Nice video homie. Love Bravo and his styles
The Gi was mimicking cloths of the day.
Traditional Japanese robes and even Western style jackets.
this is why i go there, but havent learned shit about clinching thus far and i went against a wrestler today and got sprawled to death..i had no answer.. im new but damn
That’s why there is the Gracie self-defense program!!
sometimes people arent wearing gi like clothing, but whenever you or the other guy is wearing any clothing with sleeves and a collar and it won't rip (which is a large proportion of time), the gi stuff is a weapon you can use and can be used on you. It's important that it exists.
Same reason no gi is better. Most attire today are t shirts. Not Japanese kimonos
@@internetenjoyer1044 another comment said y’all are screwed in the summer when people aren’t wearing “jackets” lmao
@@Gainsforlife it's normal to wear a jacket in the summer in the UK, especially at night. The world isn't california
Visionary.
I have to disagree. Grabbing the clothing in self defence is disastrous
@antimortemI think grabbing is fine, it's when you HOLD on to it for dear life as your last lifeline that's where the issue is. But just like in BJJ you gotta know when to hold on vs. to let go.
Rob Bledsoe but it's a good work out and a great way yo stay strong, , that's why I like the gi, but it's important to do both gi and no gi
Rob Bledsoe winter coats this could work maybe a suit, contractors. So yeah I get what you're saying but I see use in both.
10th Planet getcha clinch on
I believe a good Jiujitsu fighter should be able to do both Gi and no Gi.
gotta look into it!
Who is this fighter Justin Case that Eddie kept training for? Is he any good? I never heard of him.
Probably Joe Diaz’s mom. You DO NOT want to mess with her, she’s overpowered.
Gotta love Eddie Bravo !
Gi style has given me tendinitis in both arms. My biceps are in crazy pain after rolling every time.
Why doesn't this make perfect sense to most people going into jiu jitsu?
I get that but I'd say do both...go pants are just pants and the girls is a jacket in my opinion
No one fights shirtless anymore. Everyone has either a jacket or a t-shirt. Transition from gi to no gi is literally instant. It takes no effort to go from gi to nogi.
There are very few things you can't do to a t-shirt you can do with a gi.
simple solution. find a gym that offers gi and no gi grappling along with mma striking.
It would be nice, if it were that simple. To many schools focus on sport and not self defense. And Gi classes are mostly offered
Starting his bjj place out here in Oregon, hopefully it goes god
Man i wish 10th planet was near me
Jason Elliott They have many schools that are their partners and teach similar stuff
Rubber guard makes so much sense; how could people not see it before hand.
Thank god his music took off ✊🏽✌🏽
Seems to make sense. Probably good to be proficient in gi and no gi, bjj and judo, striking and 10th planet
Thinking of starting training in BJJ. Should I begin with no-gi right away or start with the gi?
Everyone arguing about whether training Gi or No Gi is better for a street fight. In my experience most street fights take place between groups, the last thing I’m gonna do is try and submit a guy whilst his friends stamp on me.
Gotta train both
Catch wrestlers have been training no gi since day one. What too you bjj guys so long to do the same?
I get it when people say the Gi represents people's clothing. But in all honesty if you grab clothes the same way you grab some ones Gi then the clothes will rip. So you can't compare a Gi to everyday clothes. However I think you should train both Gi and No Gi.
10th planet + kickboxing + yoga = you are wild power house who gets all the ladies
Simple math
Can replace yoga with simple stretching, also your aren’t a “wild” power house, you’re a “dangerous” power house
Women won’t sleep with you just because your train martial arts
Starting jiu-jitsu? Practice 9 months to 1 year in a gi. After you have the basics, switch to nogi or 10th planet.
Does this system even have any stand up stuff?? Such as clinch work or even take downs or is it all just JUMP To GUARD
JJ is the science, man...scientific
“Mike drop”
Fuckin genius. Eddies a master
Eddie, you're a total stud! However, we often forget most people wear clothes on the street providing handles (not as good as a gi, but handles nonetheless), no? This is why I think, though MMA fighters are very well trained for any fight, wearing only shorts is a bit unrealistic for many street fights.
SHOOOSH 10NTH PLANET
Jiu Jitsu for my is a sport pratice, self defense have especial classes in my team
yes JJ is about 80 percent sport !! Too bad they don't have real BJJ system only for Self-defense.
I love this man
Last i heard there isnt too many naked street fights going on in the world...
mr vengeance a lot of people take off coats and shirts when they fight or what about guys who wear shorts. Wrestlers in street fights usually win 1 on 1 fights becuase they don't need clothes so why not bjj
djbobbydjable judo newaza is just as ggod as bjj.
Scared of getting hit? Tired of standing up?
10th planet is the fighting style for you!
That's a stupid thing to say, name a fighting style that doesn't try to avoid being hit. You can't .... dip shit
ItsColour no you
Is this a NigaaaaHigaaaa parody???
I guess you've moved from eating tidepods to drinking Clorox
Does 10P even have any takedowns or stand up clinch . I am guessing its all ground and jump to guard
Gi is good to learn jiu jitsu. It’s slower and you can learn the concepts alot more indepth in gi. But I like no gi better because it’s just more fun, and it has more transfer to mma.
This guy reminds me of ken shamrock
Eddie is the Bruce Lee of ju jitsu
What about MMA with a Gi. For both guys.
Sounds like me But he still worships the system
Interesting.
Like It.
But not new. Old time jiu jitsu used to have a thing called "taparia".
No gi, slaps... That was the way to train for a street fight.
Also recomend to search for luta livre esportiva.
Anyway, like the style. It's bringing back the old jiu.
Our koryu jujutsu style has no grips either, no reliance on clothing or gi...nothing new about no grips, it goes back hundreds of years.
Almost all of the great BJJ guys in MMA to this day are gi-mostly players. This argument sounds good but hasn't panned out.
10TH PLANET RULES
No Gi / Know Gi
I did the same with judo rely on necks hair n limbs great for security
Good video. Good philosophy.
i only do no gi classes at my school, been training for almost 2 years but i dont like the gi
