  • Let's talk about making lore fun for your games- be it for WFRP or any other TTRPGs. This is primarily directed at games and systems that already have a setting. I use Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay as my example as this is the game system I play.

Quinsberry Lodge Could you do a summary video of one of your WFRP games, going over what worked and what you wish could’ve been better or done differently? Or maybe one on your personal process to creating game sessions? There’s so much you can do!

I think WFR would greatly benefit from being demoted to a low fantasy setting. Chaos is out there and real but physically but its distant , like Satan, but like in the medieval mindset, its an internal struggle about temptation. No PC wizards or elves, and orks, beastmen and skaven are also a distant almost legendary threat. This is how I would run it with people who have no idea about the setting. The big anatgonist is chaos but it is present in all manner of courrpution throughout the empire, both literally and metaphorically, this is what players should get when playing this game.

    • @Sara3346
      @Sara3346 3 роки тому +2

I don't want to be dismissive but Sigmars Empire is not the entirety of the Setting even if the writers are overly in love with it. Bretonnia wouldn't really even exist as a full polity without at least something like Orcs constantly threatening them, etc.Ulthuan has the potential for being a very fun setting for the right sort of elf players, sadly I don't think there is a supplement properly set their yet sadly.
It's not like it's impossible for you to set it in a province that is facing a mostly human threat anyway. This whole video is about Marienburg which is not only not really the empire but is far enough from most inhuman threats that you can run such a campaign there.
Not even to mention the much more more detailed(compared the elves) dwarven material i'm sure players can work with, why throw all that away? Just to make the already overhyped empire the literal entirety of the setting?
Don't get me wrong I think this IS a good way to introduce the setting. I just feel it is a little disrespectful to all the writers to essentially want to throw away entire influental works with a different feel like say: Barony of The Damned as a good example since I see that book cited all over as useful reference in the community.

A lot of stuff in Warhammer, especially the millennia-long history of 40k, is not going to be immediately useful for bums, guards men and coinclippers. But the small things like what a tech-guild does is. GW liked to throw little dnippets of microfiction from unreliable authors in between rules blocks. Sometimes entire small novels.

Players love my lore, and have for a decade. I've never had a problem getting players to enjoy what they're listening to, until I realized why other people might be having a hard time with it.
    Wanna know the secret?
    Here it is.
Only write lore that's related to the characters.
Think about it. The PCs are the camera lens through which we view the entire adventure. Why the FUCK are you making it about your NPCs?
What you're describing is an "exposition dump", and it's annoying no matter what media format, whether it be books or live action.
If you're going to write for players, you need to do just that: write for the audience, instead of writing for yourself. If they wanted to study and write lore, they'd all be GMing, but that's not how the game works. You're there to setup a backdrop, which includes lore, NPCs, locations, etc., but what you are NOT there for is to talk, at length, about lore that nobody has expressed an interest in.
And, when all else fails? Just fucking ask. Seriously, it's that simple.
The beauty of games like Elder Scrolls is that lore is optional. You can skip the entire thing altogether and still build a cohesive narrative, but it gains more layers of depth when you flesh it out with more detail.
You didn't ask the players if they want to gather around and listen to you read a story, they agreed to co-create a story with you, with the only difference being that there is only one GM in order to plan out campaigns, bring cohesion to the narrative, and settle any disputes related to the rules or circumstances.
Make your campaign about your players. Even if it's a Grimdark world, make the focus the CHARACTERS struggles, and don't just use your players as a way of activating lengthy dialogues as your drag them around your overly prepared and segmented story.
Really the title should be "how to stop being a snobby GM and interact with your players".

I'm running a d&d 5e game rn set in the old world with a bunch of homebrew rules like corruption tables to better fit the tone of warhammer. I've found that the existence of the wiki and the discord related to that wiki is super helpful and I'm glad to see more and more interest being shown on youtube even if the old world is technically dead. Keep up the videos and I'll gladly keep watching! (Also for topics I wouldn't mind seeing some stuff about Middenheim and Middenland)

I’m curious why you’d use 5e DnD and not one of the WFRP systems available. The two systems and games are dramatically different in approach it seems like a choice that would only make things harder on yourself in the long run.

Any suggestions on how to use the lore well when using the Savage Worlds rules?
    Example of my situation:
I am playing in a situation where it's basically a mordheim city but technically different world but similar lore as Warhammer. This city they are at is under some weird effect that nobody can identify (making it up as I go with random charts from gm emulator) but so far we have ended up with mutants and weird crystals and such so it's basically wyrdstone. I want to have players affect by this weird corruption/chaos but no rules in any of my Savage Worlds handles it well and some suggestions I've found either have you mutating too fast or basically never.

I told my players that there’d been a big beastman warherd on a rampage and they’d all gotten drafted into the Lanwehr(militia) to help deal with it. The warherd has mostly gone back to its bloodground now, and the player characters are friends now. Not a perfect explanation, but it is serviceable.
