- Brian Burt of Lyle’s Barber Shop in Portland, Oregon, gives a traditional Gentleman’s Haircut and hair styling tips. Brian shares how to style the hair two ways using different hair products.
Lyle’s Barber Shop, tucked away in Portland's North Tabor neighborhood, has been open for three years yet has the look and feel of an old-style community barbershop from the 1960s. With Lyle’s Barber Shop, Brian shares his love and appreciation of traditional barbershops that goes back years before he trained to become a barber. Brian told us, “I hold barbering in a very high regard. I take my trade very seriously.”
Brian said Portland didn’t really have many traditional barbershops. So he opened Lyle’s Barber Shop which is named after his grandfather who always dressed impeccably and gave Brian a lot of life lessons. This was Brian’s way of paying homage to his grandfather who was “just a great human being.”
The thing Brian likes the most about barbering is the connection he makes with each client and barber he works with. He feels, “you leave here as a friend not just another customer.”
He added, “I feel it is up to us to keep this trade pushing forward and pass the torch to the next generation, to teach the do's and dont's on how a barber and barbershop should conduct themselves and be run, to show the OG's with our actions not words that we respect this time honored trade.”

Our son started going to Brian Burt for haircuts shortly after Lyle's opened, and I can tell you, this level of courtesy and professionalism is always the cornerstone to how he runs his business. Greets us with a handshake, always remembers our son (13 now and needing a pandemic trim), appointments start on time, and as you can see, he's great at communicating what he's doing. From the clean shop to the friendly smile when you walk in, Brian and his team respect their customers and want to send them back out into the world looking their best. My son hated haircuts before, but loves going to see Brian and getting things trimmed up.

This barber is a true professional. The amount of information he gives his client about how he can style his hair (both with and without product) is a breath of fresh air. As a male, I want a cut that I can rock effortlessly while also being able to doll it up a bit if I need to. I don't have time every morning to whip product in!

I HONESTLY don’t understand how this vid doesn’t have more views! Like, there’s other videos and other barbers that have 3 & 4 times these views but NOT EVEN CLOSE to the quality and amazingness of this Barber experience! Very friendly and professional. I liked how the barber considers the hair without product in how it would sit. The icing on top was all the things he teaches you about your own hair. If ever I am in Portland, I know where to go for a great haircut

Every barber should consider the hair without product. Then demonstrate various styling options. Also how to get product out of hair! This guy is the one who works most like I did when I was barbering. Calm and unpretentious with the client uppermost in his mind. I like him.

I always love watching a barber that has perfected his craft. The speed and confident hand movements is mind blowing to me. I would be so nervous to mess up as you can not simply fix it.

See, this is what passion for your craft is. I work as an automotive technician, and I love my work as well as serving my customers with the best possible product I can give them. Yes, it is our job that we have trained to do but if we can help our customers understand and learn to where they have newfound confidence and peace of mind, we are doing more than just cutting hair or working on a vehicle. Our product from start to finish defines who we are as masters of craft. When customers leave, that is our signature leaving with them.

The way Brian work's remind's of when my grandfather took me to his barber in the early 60s it was a great time I truly wish there were some of them around here now. I hope the men of Portland realize how lucky they are to have that around.

Just sitting here with a tofu teriyaki rice bowl I've just made, with a cold red stripe to wash it down, watching a true artist at work. As an ex hair stylist, it's great to watch other hair masters creating their art. I nearly choked on a rice grain seeing Harry in the mirror looking at himself getting his hair finished (excellent) My favourite cut Harry has had so far, is the older Korean guy who adjusted his hair before he started snipping away at Harry's.
