Gio Uktolseja was born in Amsterdam, grew up in Assen/Bovensmilde, and later made his home in Rotterdam. You guys may recognize Gio from Schorem💈❤️
Gio opened his shop in 2018 after finding the space while walking by it one day with his wife. “It was a beautiful open space and immediately thought, this is it. This is a place where we can really have a nice shop.”
It was empty from top to bottom and had been sitting vacant for around two years.
This shop has really been almost 25-years in the making, for as long as Gio has been in the industry. When starting out back in the mid-nineties, there was really only hairdressing so Gio learned cutting, styling, and coloring etc of hair. He started learning when he was 15, and by the time he was 17 he was working in a shop. Gio however wanted to focus on men’s hair.
Step inside the customer waiting area at the bottom of the shop that was designed to replicate Al Capone’s prison cell in Philadelphia. The rug on the floor and the couch is where Capone’s cell bed was.
Over time, Gio has added many of his personal touches to create a space where everybody can hangout with a drink or coffee. There is even a piano in the corner as Gio is a bit of a musician - so there is room for everybody to jam too! Gio brought in all the elements of what he’d like to see in a gentleman’s barbershop.
The shop is also a space where Gio celebrates his Moluccan family heritage. Books on Moluccan history and family photos decorate the walls.
Making the shop more personal is Gio’s gallery wall of family photos and memorable moments in his life. Throughout the shop are hints of Gio’s very interesting personal story but Gio says, “if you really want to know my story then you need to sit in my chair to really hear it.” ❤️

Incredible. The shot where the towel was wrapped around Harry's head with the steam rising up from the top was amazing. This was one of my favorite videos of all time.

You can just feel how passionate this barber is - he puts his whole body behind each brush of his comb, each snip of his scissors, fully committed. Flowing with the cut, dancing to a rhythm, pure joy to watch!

My favorite part is always at the end when he is styling the hair. So precise, it’s awesome.
And when he hits the street and the wind? Not a practical style for the wearer as most cant do the same as a hairdresser trying to get the same result at home or on the go. It'll be all over the place - too bulky at the top, flip flopping all over the place. The sides and back were fine.
This guy is in a league of his own. I wish I could find someone remotely close to me that has half his skill to cut my hair.

@@Plague_Doc22 Yep, he's brilliant. I've been watching Harry for years. I know he wants to show us unusual, quaint, and unique places and people, especially those with history and atmosphere. While this is commendable and much appreciated by us - it does sometimes leave him with, well, not the best haircuts, imo. But this - this is one of the best haircuts he's received over the years. Only rivaled by few. I don't know how popular Gio is in Rotterdam, but I really hope Harry's visit helps him get even more exposure. It certainly made me wish I lived a little bit closer.
@@macktheinterloper Yeah this time it actually felt like a completetly new hairstyle but without changing it if that makes any sense. The styling alone showed a lot of talent. I cant get good volume on my hair to save my life lol.

I like that you went with the diplomatic response and said that all the places are special in their own way. I'm sure there are some you would never set foot in again, though! I grew up going to small-town rural American barbershops that got you in and out in 15 minutes, with no real care or style. Makes me wish I still had hair to go to a place like Gio's!

I was once at Rotterdam (just a connection flight) was only able to see a few spots there and in Amsterdam. Beautiful cities. Would be nice to see a few asmr-ish blogs too from time to time Harry. I’ve seen them all from all over the world. This isn’t a haircut or even a style. It’s art. Taking nothing away from the others, this is a master Barber. In my field there are engineers and then there are P.E.s (Professional Engineers) and it’s shows

I would love to hear "behind the scenes" on some of these haircuts. Like barbers describing their methods or why they chose certain tools for particular cuts. Passion and expertise in any area is fascinating.
I believe Barbering is part of the performance arts. Skill is important and also, being familiar with space and volume of head shape and hair texture. To start cutting with the end in mind adding nuance and creativity to build surprise. I’m not a barber, but like Harry, I’ve traveled the world to sit in that chair. Another Masterpiece, Harry.
