We are considering getting a composting toilet since he are doing more boondocking. With the addition of LiFePO4 batteries and solar, boondocking is a lot more easier.
We have the Nature’s Head and got a second urine container to prevent the needing to go and the container being full problem. Also I would suggest putting a little bit of white vinegar in your urine container after emptying it before reinstalling. This really cuts down on the urine smell while in use and also when emptying the urine container.
That’s awesome! Finally honest people. You never hear about the pee tank and how much you have to deal with it. Glad you spoke about it. I would consider plumbing just the pee tank to the black tank. Minus the water, it would take quite a bit longer to fill, which would still lengthen your boondocking time. Just a thought. Keep the videos coming 🙂🙂
Yes that was a consideration we thought about. For a number of reasons we wanted the black tank gone but might plum it to grey or a dedicated new tank.
My family fills up our Black tank every three days...and we live full time in a Class A Newmar...I think we'd destroy something like this. More power to yall! Love your videos.
Buy a second pee bucket. If yours is full, swap out to the empty one and empty the full one after you've peed. But yeah, the composting toilets are the way to go, I think. However, the Cinderella incinerating toilets are also very interesting. First huge downside, of course, is that they cost $5 grand, and you do need to install a chimney above the toilet. You also need to feed it with propane. But the end result is pretty appealing - just go to the toilet basically normally, push a button and the toilet automatically spends 1.5 hours reducing your waste (liquid and solid both) into a table spoon of sterile ash. Which of course means you don't have to empty the toilet more than once or twice a year.
It's pretty new in Europe as well, but still been some years (invented in Scandinavia somewhere) but it hasn't taken off hugely, but I've seen it in at least one caravan, Kabe demonstrated it in one of their luxury (by European standards) caravans in Dusseldorf recently. It's an option in their caravans. I think the gas-fueled version that will work in an RV is still getting approvals in the states. But the premise is definitely pretty enticing - just go normally, push a button and forget about it until next year. Then take out the ashes, fertilize your garden, and go another year.
The airhead site mentions "A paper bowl liner acts as a carrier for solid matter on its way to the solids tank." Is this used once per usage? How does it "flush" into the solids tank? Sounds like it would also help with cleanup when there is splatter. Have you used the composting toilet in humid environments like East Coast in the summer? I'm wondering what happens if the ambient air humidity is higher than the solids tank itself.
They do offer the liners but we dont find they need to be used unless things are... less than normal. We have run it in the east coast and the compost does not last as long but it does still work.
3D-print a siphon to arrest the pee-odor in its container, or dig a hole and let the pee run directly in that hole, through a tube, using the same hole of the toilet-ventilation (pee-tube-inside-of-air-tube). Also: 2nd pee-container seems to be advisable. And take that crank away, replace it with a motor, and let it stir longer than usual, stirring is key, if you haven´t found out yourselves yet, but people are gonna be lazy, when it comes to vigorous stirring for a full minute...
How quickly does it break down toilet paper? I heard some folks with these toilets say they do not put any TP in the toilet. That aspect does not sound very appealing. From what I gather watching the video, that has not been a problem for your use. Thanks.
It does not fully break down by the time we empty it bit it does not cause a problem either. To extend tank time TP used for urine goes in a sealed trash can tho.
Hey guys, been looking at the new air & natures head. Why did you pick new air? Right now, I actually urinate in the shower as recommended by another RV'r and it works fab. No sewer smells from black tank at all. But I want to get rid of black tank altogether and do a composting toilet.. So why the New air over the natures Head?
We have used both before hand and just liked the air head better. The seat is more normal, the seals on the toilet keep urine smells down more, the fan is separate and easily serviceable, and the pee bucket is easier to detach.... just a few of our thoughts tho.
I have had problems with the depth of my regular RV toilet from day one. I went to Camping World to see if I could find a deeper toilet but they were the same depth as mine. Are these toilets deeper?
Disclaimer…I have not owned a porta potty or a composting toilet. But I don't know why anybody would have a composting toilet. It's not really portable, you have to keep and dump liquids and solids separately (a major pain), you have to store some sort of peat moss or something to put in it. Some of them require an electrical connection. A Port-A-Potty has none of the cons listed above. And if you use a couple of tablespoons of tanktechs RV, or Unique RV Digest-It, (or possibly) Happy Camper black tank treatment with every fill, you absolutely won't have an odor problem. At least not with Unique RV Digest-It, (which I have used) the odor goes away almost immediately when you add their treatment. And solids breakdown overnight. It is one of the few products I've seen that actually does everything they say it will do, with no exaggeration. Makes having a porta-potty the way to go in my opinion. Easy to dump in any toilet. Another thing you cannot do with a composting toilet is empty the solids in a regular toilet.
Why did you rule out the "Natures Head? Why not plumb the liquids directly into the now removed black tank? this would have eliminated having to empty the pee bucket everyday.
The Airhead is the original model, and it has benefits over the slightly cheaper Nature's Head - chief of which is that you can mount the Airhead flush against the wall because you can detach the pee container without opening the solid waste tank. The Nature's Head needs several inches free behind it because the only way to detach the pee tank is to open the solid waste compartment so you get to admire the contents of that whenever you detach the pee tank. Plus, the NH pee tanks are translucent... the AH tanks only have a level indicator, so you don't have to walk around with an obviously pee filled jug when emptying.
"Have to" no, but it's highly recommended. Frankly, it's better for you anyway, and there is less splashback. All men should sit down even in domestic toilets. It really doesn't emasculate you, honest...
I can't tell if you are being sarcastic or not but sitting just makes a lot more sense. If you are so insecure that you find it emasculating just go out in the back yard and pee on a tree or something every once in a while.
Yeah I don't get why men make a big deal about having to stand up. You can sit down and pee without being less of a man. Hell, you can wear a pink t-shirt with Hello Kitty on it while sitting down and peeing and not be less of a man, a real man doesn't even worry about things like that. :)

Just don't see any headaches being eliminated. Thanks for the honest analysis.
Black tanks only make sense for vacation RVs, not in full-time RVs. I can't imagine ever going back to ever owning a black tank.

That is alot of product
One third of what is going in your black tank is water.... That goes away with a composting toilet.
Sometimes when I have to go, it's 1 AND 2 at the same time...this would not work for me. But thanks for the info.
It wud still work.
Couldn’t you install a slow rotisserie motor on the stirring handle to keep things moving hands-free?
Ha! Probably could. Its pretty tough sometimes tho so it would need to be geared low.
“Made the plunge”!!! 😝
Here come the crappy jokes ;-)
Wonder in which one...?

I was not aware of the cinderella, very interesting.

Great informational video as always. Thank you!
I am guessing this is a boondocking issue, we boondock so infrequently that I don't see how this would benefit us
Yes mostly benificital for being off grid

You could keep the black tank as a liquid tank.
We originally planned to... but will be using that space very soon.

Anyway to still get an Explore shirt?

RV NUT Try the Dometic 320 - people seem to love it.
Random: but I love your shirt. 😊 I have the blue one! 👍🏻😀
Aewsome!! Send us a pic!
Why are they so expensive?
Probably because they are not mass produced yet. These are hand built by small companies.

That's exactly the set up I did - liquids go into black tank. Much nicer than dumping liquids every day or two.

What he said plus the seal around the toilet seat is much better and a more normal seat.
KORITFW, is all I can say.
poop story ... it is good..!!

No you can stand, just best to make a bank shot on the bowl to avoid splashing and not to target the solids flap directly.

I agree. It's a toilet, not a urinal. Sit your ass down. @@lorcro2000
OK my question is when are you (Cait) going to show that body?? I’m just asking what most of the guys are pining silently for..and some of the gals.
