Thank you Stuart, I'm more of macro photographer especially of insects. I bought the Rx10IV two years ago for a trip to Costa Rica with the intent of also having the ability to get some nice shots of birds. My days of swapping lenses while traveling are over. I was a bit disappointed with the macro but to be honest I also don't think I gave things enough time and to really learn the settings. It's still a bit heavy for backpacking but certainly a most excellent all around travel camera. I am taking a 6 week road trip from California to Alaska soon and I am looking forward to bringing this camera out again and still getting those close ups thanks to your help. And as a science teacher and naturalist and filmmaker. I like your style of noticing and wondering about things that you see while out in the natural world. Thanks again.
Excellent video - the settings options are worth exploring beyond the points in this video -if you are shooting af spot with low shutter speed and you immediately want to switch to a very high shutter speed with continuous auto focus for say a bird in flight you can use your selected custom button to immediately switch to shutter priority mode 2000 /3000 with the flexible focus and shoot a flying bird immediately
Hi just wanted to ask what was the lens attachment you used? Is there any particular lenses that you recommmend for macro photography? Thanks again for the informative video!
No attachment the rx10iv can focus at 2 inchs at 24mm or 72cm at 600mm so can be really useable there are macro attachments you can buy but I’ve never bothered
One thing I wish the RX10 iv had is a short range focus limiter in which it didn't try to focus beyond, say 3 metres. There are times when I'm trying to take something on a fairly sparse tree where Its a bit difficult to get the AF either in small spot or wide to pick up on the leaf I'm hoping for and the AF picks up on the background leaving the subject so out of focus I have no idea where it is in the frame. For the moment I'm simply going to manual focus which is a reasonable solution unless the subject is flitting about a lot. Overall, I'm still very happy with the camera. I doubt there will be a Mk 5 till someone comes up with a serious competitor to push this version off the perch at the top of the superzoom lists. Interestingly, the fact that you can't get close with the zoom in the mid range is also true for my old Nikon P510 and, I believe, many other superzoom lenses. I guess its a restriction arising out of the problems of constructing a lens with such a big focal length range and something we have to live with in order to enjoy the other benefits.
I'm very new to this camera., but know I will love it when I understand it! When you said you were shooting a bee at 1600 what aperture were you using as I understand it only goes to 1000 under f8.
With flash upto f6.3 1/1000 over f8 1/2000s but no flash will shoot upto 1/32000s shutter speed. F4-f5.6. Yep the key is to experiment and practice and you will get there
Hi Stuart, I'm looking for advise on what to do. My RX10 IV is beyond repair due to a fall in the river. I still have a A7R II with a 24 mm lens. I'm now trying to figure out if I should buy another RX10 IV or to buy a 28-200 lens for the A7. I don't like swapping lenses to be honest and that's the reason I bought the RX10. But the fact is that the images out of the A7 are a lot better. Do you know if I crop from the 200 on the A7 how that would compare to zoomed in photo on the RX10? Greetz from Holland
do you shoot fully manual with Af ? if so the rx10iv can produce images as good as the best a7 a9 even the a1 obviously only 20mp so less detail than say the 50mp sensors , there is nothing better than the rx10iv for all in one use. but i have just got the a6700 which you could use plus smaller emount lenses and its a little monster camera. but again the rx10iv kicks its ass in so many places its basically a baby a9 body. id say no it wont be the same 200mm crop as you would lose so much detail.
@@sjm.photos Today I received my RX10 from Sony Repair. Surprisingly it seems to work well. Apart from spots inside the lens. I mainly do AF. I"ll check if these spots are visible and disturbing. If not I think I"ll keep the RX10 and maybe even sell the A7. I totally agree concerning the flexability and the all in one RX10 Stuart. That Zeiss lens is top class 👍
Hi Stuart, I see that you have a different eyepiece from the standard one on your RX10 MK IV. Would you mind telling me where you purchased it? Thanks.
the focus hold as spit/back button focus is interesting for me as i photograph butterflies. the issue i found is the spot is not visible u til you press-hold yhe focus-hold lens button. it only becones visible when focussing. so you can't easily place the spot on the insect prior to focussing. i use your earlier idea of toggling between wide and spot with the nav's centre button as this stays in spit mode and shows the spot rectangle all the time. also, you set iso 100 and aperture in manual mode and float shutter speed? if find f5.6 to f8 is needed to keep butterfly wings fully in focus and 320th/sec is minimum for sharp 600mm images so i set those im M mode and let the iso float. is this floating iso a mistake given the 1" sensor?
keep holding the button in and the box is visible. just practice and its set to the centre of the frame so pretty easy to get into the subject. i use it all the time and no issues what so ever.
Hello, i know you normally shoot on manual, but were you shooting in Macro mode, OR Manual mode in this video? I've had this camera for a couple of months. There's so much to learn, but trying to take it day by day. I've found Macro is not true Macro on the M4. I watch a lot of your videos, which help so much. Thank you!
the rx10iv doesnt really have a macro setting it can always shoot a minimum of a couple inches away from the subject if at 24mm wide or at 72cm when ar full zoom makes not difference if you are in auto or manual or a scene setting.
Hello, I tried to capture dogs running to catch discs. The I wanted the camera to lock on to the dog and I panned the camera . It didn't work the camera captured the tree line behing dog in focus, but not dog. These dogs are really fast. What should the settings be? I don't view what I captured until I get home , because I can't see the screen very well.
It's really a shame that there isn't an RX10V with the latest AF/video/card slot/Z battery. Or even a model with IBIS working with lens stabilization for insanely steady 600mm. I almost went with one of these before grabbing an A7RIII, and sometimes wonder if my life would be easier with just one lens!

Excellent enjoyed that, really good pictures too. Going to use that setting for my focus hold too👍
use it all the time its so handy when you need a smaller focus area
Great video, I’m taking my rx out tomorrow at sunset for poppy pictures
very nice gotta love some poppies

I will do a new updated video tomorrow

I tend to focus on the floor to bring it back to closer if it wont behave and yep very true 😊
Great details about the camera. Where do find the info like 1/1000 shutter speed with flash at f4.
Just try it out it limits the shutter speed
@@sjm.photos thanks. It happened to me once while I was birding. It wouldn't go above 1/1000th sec...I haven't figured why It did that
@@dsam3 You have the shutter set to mechanical. Select Auto in the shutter menu. Then it can use electronic shutter for high speeds.

the rx10iv even though dated is incredible still but if they do upgrade it with a rx10v it has the possibility of being an insane all in one

its just a universal on off amazon then i pulled off the rubber bit warmed it up and stretched it over the rx10iv
