For your 'skinny string' CBG, increase the tension on the strings, up to a DAD tuning, and remove the chromatic frets so you just have the diatonic frets, and you have a strumstick!
I made my first one following the majority of your examples. It looks great but sound is a bit off. I think my nut is to high and some of my frets are off. Though I went through each one and compared their height to each other. I get some of that unwanted string vibration. So in these examples you take the first 3 thick string and tune them to EBE, and the smaller 3 strings to EBE.
@@PuckettCigarBoxGuitar yep. Fixed it after I saw this video. Though I have string vibrating noise fuzz when I hit certain frets. My strings were a little off as well from your sizes. I had .042, .032 and .024.
I wish you had displayed what nylon strings sound like on a CBG. I don't believe i have heard anyone playing with them in all the videos that I have watched about CBGs. I heard that steel guitar stings seem to work well for these 3 stringers, but I have not tried them out, myself. Thanks for the posting of this video, as it is really helpful information to have.
Hey Del - thanks for sharing. I love the EBE fat string sound but haven’t messed around with piezos or different string types yet, do you know if the wound bronze phosphor strings would work with a mag pickup?
Well, actually I asked you a few days ago about the gauge of the strings, so, thanks for your patience, and thumb Up for you. Now, about nylon strings? Do you have any video playing with nylon strings, wound or not, and a piezo? If not, could you make one with a demo? Maybe you have already a guitar like this, and you can show how It works, with or without slide, etc.
I like open C, and I dont want to damage my guitar by putting to thick of a string on......what gauge strings would you recommend for open C.....what gauge could I use for high C instead of a B string ....for a deeper tone.....Thanks Georgiareb55
He has a wounded one and a skinny one. And smokes a joint. But is there an advantage to having wound strings when u play slide? We have to experiment, the master says...
Puckett Cigar Box Guitar aren’t most traditional acoustic strings metal on the inside? What kind of strings do you use when using magnetic pickups? If you want it to be acoustic and electric?
Do you “tune down “ from g to e to reduce stress on the instrument or just because you prefer to play in e? Does the lower tension cause any fret buzz ( thinking no because your playing sounds great). Of course this all depends on scale length. Do you tend to build in the same scale length?
trackie1957 many benefits of tuning down (just my opinion). Less tension means easier on the fingers.. less prone to neck bow since there is no truss rod. Lower tone suits the instrument. Less String breakage... longer string life. Easier mental transition from guitar... (think top string and bottom two EBE). I don’t notice any buzz ... if so I just raise the action or level a fret... etc. I build any scale length... same rules apply
you can also use fishing line, fence wire, screen door wire, and even some super long super skinny springs as strings
Thanks for the videos and for helping to take the mystery out of this project. My first build is done and I look forward to many more!!
Gonna use this for my canjo! Thanks!
I had no idea they were called cigar box guitars and I happen to own one it's going to be fun just messing with different strings thanks man

I have also seen a CBG with .050, .030, and .010 guages for its 3 strings
Most helpful video I've found so far. And wraps it up quick 👌
Awesome videos! Helping me lots on my way to build one myself.
Incredible collection of cigar box guitars
pine Mapping and cigar boxes!

Gauge is.044 .034 .026 (A D G) from normal acoustic set

Thanks, helpfull info.
Thanx for info
Do you think doubling up on the strings improves their sound? I'm planning on trying that next go around.
beauty lies in the eye (or in this case “the ear”) of the beholder 😎
Thanks for the great video, i saw some other video's and they tried to make it sound like rocket science.
Scott Conger I try to just keep it ROCK it science 😜👈🏼

Hard Luck Chuck the Phosphorus bronze strings work great with mag pickups... just as good as electrics :-)
omg dude the chain guitar strap thing is so bad ass! \m/
Could I buy a pack of normal strings and use them to tune to GDG if so which three strings should I use
8-Bit Games use the ADG strings
For a first build would a fretless be better?
easier … 😉
can i put a thicker gauge ?, i want it to sound more bass
yes

georgiareb55 I always tune down... not up. I’ve only experimented with drop C (see the Drop C video ?)
Thanks, very useful video!
Are you putting "skinny" strings on all ? Or wound on all 3?

- valuable info, thx!
Thanks
When you’re using a magnetic pickup vs piezo, does it dictate what type of strings you use?
Trevor Lynch you’ll need metal strings for magnetic pickup
Puckett Cigar Box Guitar aren’t most traditional acoustic strings metal on the inside? What kind of strings do you use when using magnetic pickups? If you want it to be acoustic and electric?
Which strings are better electric or acoustic using a piezos pickup?
Bradley Hasis I use electric strings only when necessary... :-)
I love this vid for the knowledge ,but why am I never happy with whatever I use and keep changeing ha silly me
Helpful for a newbie CigBoxGit {;-) Thank you.
dale you any relation to gary puckett? my wife wanted to know.
you pickedup the 3 string guitar did you call it a 6 string guitar or a fixed string guitar ??
I dont remember typing that
This is probably a dumb question but could you string up 3 low E strings and just tune them to EBE, for a more full sound?
Spooby absolutely!!! Just adjust the bridge for proper intonation
That’s so badass!
Thanks!🇺🇸😎
Now ya gotta pick em all up....I don't know...
So it's not 6,5, and 4. It's 5,4, and 3?
correct 😎👍🏽

Del, quick question: am I correct in thinking the skinny strings will be lower tension on the guitar? Thanks.
You are correct sir!!! 😎
