Shane breaks down the blues scale into an easy-to-follow lesson. He uses Blind Willie Johnson's technique of playing leads on the high string. Got questions? Ask them below!
Most singers sing in A what is the equivalent of
O 3567 1012 for A
sure with someone would show what strings to use to tune to gdg
one thing ive struggled with (not playing slide ) is which fingers to use as you go up and down the scale - can you advise ?
Gimme that dweedle!
to clarify or should i say be more specific this is the minor blues scale, which is 1, ♭3, 4, ♭5, 5, ♭7. This is NOT the major blues scale which is 1, 2,♭3, 3, 5, 6
In terms of notes in G this 1, ♭3, 4, ♭5, 5, ♭7 equals G A# C C# D F or to related it to the video its fret 0, 3, 5, 6, 7, 10 , 12 as he said
I am addicted to yr vids .Have bought one and making very slow but learning progress
So are you strumming all 3 strings ? When you play it in full
Maybe you can do a lesson where you pluck each string open about 8 times each so I can tune mine to yours. This would be greatly appreciated brother.
Hey Shane please tell me how I tune that A string to G without it breaking? And please explain what an Octive above means ?? I have no idea. Please help me brother !!
Trying to save money to buy a cbg,not having much luck, but working on it.
Hi Shane i'm 75 year old who has been trying to play a guitar for 40 years i have tried 6 string 4 string and until now 3 string you make it so easy if i cant get it this time i am going to try a shot gun .you are really good at explaining thanks
Awesome Shane! I love your videos. By the way I recently get your book A-W-E-S-O-M-E. Thank you so much!
💥💫🌟yeah! Thanx from South Germany.
EXCELLENT! This REALLY helped me! Thanks!!
Thank you Shane Speal!
I have to play my 11th feet to get the same sound as your 12th. Why is that?
Shane how high should the strings be off the frets to play with both your fingers and with the slide comfortably?
That’s gonna be trial and error for ya. It’ll take some experimenting with string gauges and height to find your comfy spot. Everyone is different. :)
thanks shane
Soon to be 62...just got a 3 string GDG and your lessons are great...thanks!
Just started. I modified a baritone ukulele to make it a 3 string guitar... Let's go!!
Thanks a lot for this lesson!
Hey I’m a 45 year old Blues lovin lady from Australia. I’ve had my cbg for years and haven’t found any lessons I love. Until you! In the last half an hour I’ve learnt so many things. Thanks heaps.
just started looking for any help love the 3 string
👍❤️✌️
I'm a 65 year old Brit beginner (does this sound familiar ?) Just built my first cigar box guitar. Love the lessons !
Thank you. Couldn't get the hang of the blues scale. After watching this I got it. Eureka moment. Cheers from Northern England
Greetings way down from Montevideo, Uruguay! I love your tutorials. Any way I can translate this to my fretless 3 string cbg? Thanks!
Its the exact same thing on a slide, you dont mash the string down to the wood. Just put your slide exactly over the fret and touch the string. He has a template if their are no markings at all on your cbg on his website...for free!
Yup, Brit also...I started playing with 3 strings a while back, the reason? .. A chap by the unusual name of seasick..Hmnnnn..Can't help thinkin it should've been Trainsick Steve....Maybe doesn't sound as good..Anyway, How's he playin with 3 strings thought I. Which lead me to cigar box guitars, Ah I thought...could this be the answer to my biggest problem with guitars? That being stupidly short bloody fingers. And they will NOT bend over strings either! So, I'm with BB on this and do not do chords..well not often anyways. Well power chords are fine, i likes them. And as for stretchin me pinkie 4 frets up...forget that..not happening..Which brings me to finger pickin..nope..fingers a bit too wide and strings a bit too close together, so cock ups ensue. Nails always get busted and them nail shaped finger thingys..yuck.. Then theirs slides...never got on with them either, don't know why really, but just doesn't work for me..too many strings maybe ..i do get confused easily. So..It's always been fingering for me..and even then mostly the first 4 strings..5th sometimes and the 6th gets lonely. In fact i've been known to do a Kieth Richards when re-stringing and leave the 6th in it's packing..got a few spare ones around.
So, off came the unwanted strings and open G...Strummings easy, picking individual strings..yep..and...I can actually flippin finger pick....Yaayyy. Well there are only 3 strings.
I do get the slide bit wrong sometimes tho, so i dropped the strings to the 1st 2nd and 4th position so now i don't keep catching the fretboard edge. And me socket stays on me finger, which is a good thing. Now i don't know if this is just me, but the thin string just doesn't ping right a lot of the time. So i thought, neck radius, i lifted the strings a bit higher any way, these strings follow the radius which means, the tops of the strings do as well, and one's a lot thicker than t'others. So is the slide contacting the two thicker ones and not the thin one? So i adjusted them so the tops are level, re-intoned it and adjusted pickups. now it's much better..well it is for me. Now i'm thinking i maybe should've done that with an electric guitar and me slide might've worked better. Now i couldn't caes less tho..!
So now it's learning these 3 string blues songs n stuff..all good fun.
I love the lessons Shane! I just started lessons a few weeks ago. Thank you for hooking me up with Casey Baron! He is a very sweet very patient instructor.
Definitely going to be following your lessons, as well as ordering my stubby slide and skull T-Shirt
Hi shane,
could you show us how you burn your fret markers on to the neck?
Hey that’s a good question...was wanting to see a how to video on that myself.
Shane, were you on Good Day PA with Amy Kehm? Just picked up a cheap CBG and am enamored with it, you look familiar and remember seeing someone on the noon show that played one. Enjoy your playing as I play 6 string blues this is fun as all get out!!! I am now subscribed and might be looking for a better quality CBG in the future as mine has super high action, Merry Christmas!!!
Yep! That was at least 3 years ago!
Is there any chance you can do a video on working into improvisational licks using the scale? I also find the picking that you do on many songs impressive and would enjoy a video or two on the strumming techniques you like to employ.
dudemistert Yessir! Those vids are in the works. :)
I'd like to add my vote of thanks for your lessons. I've been following you for a while. I've built one CBG, bought another and have never mastered playing them. I also want to echo David Tannen's thoughts... you're a knowledgable musician and an enthusiastic instructor. There is no shame, no foul in earning a little scratch from those who would gratefully pay you for your tutelage. But until then I'll go buy a stubby slide...
Thanks so much, CJ!
Here's my hangup with Patreon and Paypal donations: This whole modern cigar box guitar movement was launched when a free set of plans I posted went viral back in the early days of the internet. Since then, I've always believed in the free exchange of ideas. It's afforded me opportunities to perform in amazing places and meet the coolest people ever.
When I attach a donation link to this stuff, it just doesn't seem right, because I've always gone the free route. (Some of my UA-cam vids still have the Paypal link...I gotta update them.) At the same time, I'm having a blast "curating" the items over at stubbyslide.com and selling them to twisted folks like myself. I always wanted to have a company that sold the cool things from the back of comic books. Now I do. (And I love owning all these cool slides and things, too!)
Besides, it's more fun to send a cool slide or World's Best Kazoo to people when they show their appreciation.
So I'm babbling. Lemme get back to editing tomorrow's video. :)
Thanks for the slide purchase. I'm sending it out tomorrow with a few little 'extras' tucked inside.
Brother... babble away! I hear what you're saying. I respect where you're coming from. In a world of cookie-cutter consumer-based convenience, it's nice to share ideas and experiences with a few kindred souls. I look forward to your next video with bated breath and I wish you continued success with your musical endeavors!
"open, 3, 5. 6. 7, 10, 12"
Just like the dots. Mostly.
Great lessons these past couple of weeks!
And if you make your own cigar box guitars, you could easily put the on those frets. No rules!!!
Shane Speal - And I do! Mostly.
I'm looking forward to more lessons! I really like that you start with the basics - this should help everyone to get to the same level eventually no matter how little they know for now.
Thanks! Keep playing this scale up and down until it's second nature. It'll be like Mr. Miyagi telling Daniel to wax on, wax off. Eventually, it'll become part of your muscle memory.
Thank you for your lessons and your enthusiasm. If you ever do a www.patreon.com/ site I would sign up.
Nah... I had one of those Paypal donate buttons for a while, but I felt guilty about it. These lessons are free. If someone wants to say thanks, they can buy a slide or something small from stubbyslide.com . That way, they can get something in the mail and not just throw money at a free video. I guess I'm old fashioned. :)
I'm a 53 year old Brit beginner with a 3 string cigar box guitar. Learning from scratch and loving your lessons.
I'm going to do my best to teach the basics. For me, it's always a struggle because I learned to play by ear, not by book. But it's also good in a way because all I teach are the "tricks and cheats" that got me where I'm at. Stick with it. These lessons are gonna get fun!
Just got my CBG, now the fun begins, love the lessons, especially the "simple" ones
Ditto on all counts!
Hey Pete, i am 52 and love the lessons too.
@@ShaneSpeal Hey Shane please help me to tune that A string to G. Mine breaks every time. And please explain what an Octive above means ?? Please help bro. Thank you so much
Hi Shane! Just picked up my first cigar box 3 string this past weekend. I've played guitar for years and recently fell in love with cigar box guitar. Looking forward to making your channel a regular stop on my path to 3 string enlightenment! ~Andy
Andy's Vinyl Den let me know what you’d like to learn!
Shane Speal it will be a week or two lol. I just ordered a new set of strings and a stubby slide.
Thank You!!!!!!
What other lessons you want, Michael? :)
