  • In this film i try to recreate an image that i remember from my childhood. A photo of a Kingfisher on a No Fishing sign is one that stuck in my mind for years. I made one in the workshop and put it into one of favourite Kingfisher locations on a local brook. Join me to see if I managed to capture the image that i wanted.

    Hi Simon excellent work it always comes to the ones who wait I've had the same trouble with horses I didn't have much room on the riverbank the hide halfway on the bank and halfway in the water at about 4:30 he he flew on to his perch above the river lining up my shot the horses came down to the shallow for a drink and walk straight past the camera and me at 7 in the morning I finally got what I was looking for . And thank you for all the videos in the past

    Great video, thumbs up and subscribed from me. I went to the coast last Saturday morning, there at 0530 as I'd seen a Kestrel hovering last weekend whilst out with the kids.
    Carried my tripod, gimbal and 500/4 for hour and a half up and over steep cliffs and saw nothing. Got back home, sst on the drive for a minute pondering if I should take my gear in now or later. As I was a bit tired I opted for later. Walked in through the side gate and heard a commotion, a Jay making a right racket. Next thing a Buzzard went for the Jay dispersing it from its perch, a Green Woodpecker was calling loudly close by too, the Jay countered and they had a bit of a go before going their separate ways.
    Lasted for a minute, no time to get my gear from the car 😒 Typical, all the action happening 20m from my back door...............

    • @simoneardley

      Thanks for the sub, yeh its usually the case things not going to plan. Would have been a result getting the Buzzard going for the Jay!! Better luck next time eh👍🏼👀📷

    That was brilliant, well done mate. I managed to get my first shot of a Kingfisher just last week. I was doing a Landscape Photography vlog when my son saw it go shooting past. I only had a 70-200mm on me but managed to get some handheld shots so I will have to go back with my 150-500mm and my hide. I was so surprised though at how they didn't seem to bothered about people, not as skittish I though it would be. People walking past and with animals and he was quite happy with it. Anyhow great vlog really enjoyed it 👍🏼👍🏼

      Thanks Richard, yeh i was getting a bit twitchy the closer it got. Theyre a big old lump!! When you get the mic, have a play around with the gain to get the best out of it . I bought a lavalier mic to go with it and the first night out with it I got the lead snagged on something and the Rode mic that was clipped on my belt fell off into the long grass. It took me half an hour to find it, I felt sick. Up to now Ive not used the lavalier as the lead gets in the way a bit.Im going to make a belt pouch to put the Rode in and try again. Good luck with it, theyre a great bit of kit. Cheers Si 👍🏼📷👀

And cheers for the info regarding the Rode Mic setup, I thought I'd leave the Lavalier Mic for the while until I see how it performs without, the Mic Muffs that come with it look like they fall off a bit easily, will need some testing to see whats works best. Cheers for now, Richard:-)

    Very entertaining. I did a similar mod to my chair hide although I used some stick on velcro patches. I don't like velcro much though and those hooks looked a good idea.
    Cows can be a right pain. That one was certainly taking the piss!
    I have a new location for some badger images at a sett that is on the edge of a field but unfortunately at the moment there is a small herd of young bullocks in there. They just won't leave you alone so I'm having to postpone until they are out of there.

    The sound quality was excellent Simon - great clarity. Well done in getting your images due to great planning and plenty of patience. I might have legged it if that had been me in the hide when the cow turned up. Me and cows don't get on. I got cornered once in a field in Blackburn and got electrocuted 4 times trying to get away by ducking under the electric fence. I think it affected by third party battery grip on my D500 as it started crashing my camera just after that. The chairhide looks to be a game changer by the way.

    Another great realistic film. Great advice on the hooks for the hide, i bought one after watching your review but was using bulldog clips for the scrim which was a faff. I was out last night setting up kingfisher perches and ive decided i need waders 🙄

    Fantastic! Loved the cow scene. That was so funny. Question though? did you swear to yourself, when it stood right in the way of the shot? I also love how you get so excited over a homemade perch. Cos I'm exactly the same, especially when it pays off👍. Anyhow at the end of the session you got the result. And fantastic result to Simon. A great vlog enjoyed every minute 👍

    Hi Simon, great shots of the Kingfisher.
    Do you know the Function called "Pro Capture" at Olympus Cameras? With it you could shot the Kingfisher flying away from sign pinsharp! Try it! I'm shure, you would love it. Espen Helland has also a video about it with woodpeckers, leaving there cave.

    One question, what make are your trousers? They look ideal and have built in knee pad pockets, would love a pair.

      Hi Stephen, the trousers are Fjallraven Vidda Pro. Awesome pants, I've also got a pair of Fjallraven Barents Pro that are double lined . Theyre a winter trouser with a fleecy lining. G1000 fabric can be waxed to weatherproof them.

    Just discovered your channel Simon and loving it! Working my way through all your vids, love the way they're 'complete' rather than just giving us the end product (the photos). Quick question, which software do you use for the editing of the vids? Please keep up the good work, your authenticity shines through!

    Hello Simon, magnificent reportage in search of the kingfisher, very good work and effort.
    Would you mind giving me your opinion of the video support you use? and why don't you use a gimbal head ??
    Thank you very much for sharing and kind regards.

    • @simoneardley
      @simoneardley  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Miguel, I use the Manfrotto 502AH video head. I have a carbon gimbal that never gets used any more. I switched to the video head because of the amount of film footage i try and capture for the youtube films. Its also a great support for doing stills. I'll probably never go back to the gimbal as the 502 does everything that the gimbal does and more. I'm going to do a film on the two products soon.

    I've got my perches all made but used brolley spikes as my base to the perches..my issue is finding the stream or brook to use...it needs to be quiet enough not to be disturbed but not too far to carry your gear...I will keep looking, but love the concept...

      Hi Karen, good luck with the hide. Not sure about your area as I'm in Lancashire but i find the best way is to get out on your local public footpaths and have a good mooch about. A good selection of OS maps and binoculars is a must!! Google Earth is also a great assett.

    Hi Simon great photography and paitince 👌I have a nikon p900 any advice on how to take photos without blurring the background and not using manual mode? Any advice be appreciated.

    • @simoneardley
      @simoneardley  3 роки тому

      Hi Paul, its all about depth of field which can involve a number of factors. You need to be shooting with your aperture shut right down to allow maximum depth of field which is what landscape photographers do. This requires bags of light which isnt always condusive with fast shutter speeds that wildlife photographers generally need. Also the distance of your subject from the background needs to be closed down. Try shooting in Aperture priority. Hope some of this helps📷👍🏼

    I don't know if you're still answering inquiries but I have a couple of questions. When you are doing video of the birds are you using the 180° rule? Do you use ND filters? Thanks. Can't get enough of your videos.

    • @simoneardley
      @simoneardley  6 місяців тому

      Thanks Steve, not sure what you mean about the 180 rule and I only use a vari ND when I'm doing the odd landscape shot. Thanks for watching the channel 👍

    • @steveloudon7491
      @steveloudon7491 6 місяців тому

      Thanks for the reply. The 180° rule just says that the shutter speed should be ( 1/ double the frame rate). For example if you're shooting at 24fps your shutter speed should be as close to 1/48 as possible. If 60fps then SS as close to 1/120 as possible. This affords the most natural motion blur to the video. Keep up the good work

    • @simoneardley
      @simoneardley  3 роки тому +1

      Cheers Indy, its a bit of a tight spot for panning. Kingfishers seem to appear that quick and before youve seen them approaching theyre already on the perch. Better if youre on a long straight stretch with them coming towards you👀📷
