    Great footage and great shooting! Actually, the birds of prey are what is known as "Feruginous Rough Legged Hawks". When they nest, they have rather large broods of young. The areas that they prefer to inhabit is prairie type areas. Good job of providing them with some easy vitals!

    Reminds me of back when I was a kid with my Marlin 39-A, 4x Leupold. I had a straight run on ground squirrels of "83" before I finally missed, with shots from 75 to 160 yards. That was a good day and I have not found conditions similar enough to ever come close to repeating it.... I switched to strictly .22lr pistol shortly after that and did not bring the .22lr rifle back into play until I got into my 60s. The best that I ever did with my old Mark I Target/Clark Trigger and action/trigger job was 27 straight before a miss on ground squirrels from 25 to 150 yards. I can't match the shooting of my young years these days, but I can still manage to hit more often than I miss... ;) Thanks for a really cool video!

    One thing I have always wondered is..........if you don't like hunting or shooting videos, and you have a problem with seeing a critter getting shot at, then why in the hell do you bother watching, and then commenting on it?!?

    Subscribed. Great fun. I first (and only so far) shot p-dogs following a guided antelope hunt in 2016. First dog I shot was only about 100 yards out. That .308 Win with 150 grain SST hand loads literally exploded the dog into a number of chunks I could see flying through the air while looking down the scope. The guide said, and I'll never forget, 'You hit that one in the pocket.' I can't wait to head west this summer specifically for prairie dogs.

    • @Red.Hot.Chili.Beans63

      Sure, but the most likely outcome is the bullet shoots clean thru the dog. I get it. Lead poisoning of eagles is a real problem and shouldn't be minimized. I think lead shot from small game is the primary source however.

    Excellent marksmanship! Very impressive switching from one platform to another and still keeping your mark, but I figure this wasn't your first time in the field with these rifles.
    Have you ever used/considered a. 243? It used to be very popular here in southern Appalachia several decades ago and we we were still an agrarian society and farmer would not only allow you but was tickled pink for you to snipe groundhogs on there land.
    I can testify that the .243 was powerful 'whistle-pig' . I of course never could afford one at the time (I was in my teens to 20's and well, you know about money at those ages) but a lot of the older guys used them to GREAT effectiveness with some crazy shots.
    I mainly used my squirrel head Marlin 60 with a Tasco 3x9 that I scraped up somewhere and had my own little Carlos Hathcock -hog stalking eradication kinda thing going on. Fun times! They would even have groundhog check in and season raffles for a rifle or shotgun at the mom and pop stores (that don't exist anymore either), different but damn good times.
    Anyway I've started seeing crops planted again here (it only took what about 30 years) and have thought about getting back into varminting. I picked up a Mossberg MVP in .223 a little while back and am thinking about something with a little more legs like a .243 or 22-250. I know we live in different areas with different varmints but from watching your videos it doesn't seem that dissimilar.
    I can see you're a 22-250 fan, I was just wondering your thoughts on the 243.
    Merry Christmas!

      My newest rig is a Tikka T3, in wood, Chambered for the 243 Win. I've Only done a couple videos on it so far, Waiting for other things to happen with Tikka. Any way, long range shooting has been here for a long time, only in the maybe last 5-10 years has the quality/price of custom built rifles and optics come into the range that those that want to play can afford it. I was shooting dogs out to maybe 550-600 yards in the 1980s-90s with a 25-06, Ruger M77 HB, with just guesstimating the range. If you want to play long range today, look at the very high BC bullets out there, most in the 6.5 Cal. Then look into the best thing to happen that we never had. High end lazer range finders. That is by far the best info you can have. How far is it?????

    • @bills1613
      @bills1613 5 років тому

      Agreed. I have used ALOT of Kentucky windage over the years but am planning to invest in a good range finder.
      I was just looking around your channel to see if you had anything on them or if by the way you were calling out the ranges if you had one of the scope/range finder combo deals.
      Thanks for answering back. I'll look for your .243 vids.

    At 2:59 I caught the vapor trail from the .17 just before you smacked that varmint! (Sweet!) Watching your videos makes me want to get my .222 Remington 788 out and do some coyote hunting. The places I deer hunt have coyotes, and I think the deer population should benefit by thinning the 'yotes out some. Great video!

    Great fun! One thing I never understood was why they would call a ceasefire when the little bastards would pop their heads up on the range at Ft. Carson?! EVERY time you'd start firing the stupid bastards would do the total opposite of what you would think that a NORMAL animal would do!! They pop UP instead of running DOWN their holes!! It would take ALL day to qualify! The "kinder gentler Army"'! I got my first taste of dog hunting when I was stationed at Ft. Carson, we would take our revenge off post for making us sit out in the sun all day!

    Great shooting. I just returned from my first PD hunt out of Seligman, Arizona. It was incredible and I'm now going to buy a 204 Ruger for the longer shots. Used my 22 Hornet out to 375 yards using 40gr Blitzkings with 13grs Lil-gun and a CZ527. Also used a 243 and 7-08 for long shots out to 600yds. The 204 will cover shots out to 600 without the rifle recoil pulling me off the target. Need to spot your own shots. Enjoy your videos.

      Zach Sanders I really love my 17 wsm. Deadly on gophers, prairie dogs, fox, coyotes, raccoons, rabbits, porcupines and rock chucks. That's just from my personal experience up here in Montana. I don't think you would be disappointed. I used to shoot a 17 hmr and I hardly ever take it out. I also shoot a 204 and a 22-250 for varmint hunting and I find myself grabbing my 17 wsm out of all of them

    Nice work buddy, how are you getting on with the 17 Hornet? You found a nice load? I'm doing a little experimentation with H322 next calm weather I get, it's been very stormy here in the UK. Rain and wind all the time lately.

    • @cavedweller1959
      @cavedweller1959  7 років тому +1

      The 17 Hornet has an extremely long throat. Loading rounds as long as I dare, AA 1680 will do sub MOA with both 20 & 25gr. v-max. I can live with hand feeding the rifle on a dog town but I would like more than a singe shot for other hunting. I just returned from the range, ran some 25 grainers loaded to fit the magazine, 2" and 2 1/4" at 100 yards. Unbelievable.

    • @PointofimpactTV
      @PointofimpactTV 7 років тому

      cavedweller1959 very strange, I get about 0.3-0.5 moa on new brass with 25 grain vmax and 9.4 grains of lil gun (hot hot load) and then about 0.75 moa on subsequent firings and I load to 1.725" OAL. I shot some with h322 in bad weather and got around 1" at 100, I think the Hornady brass is pretty poor with 10.5-14.5 thou thickness at the neck, was getting 0.5-2.5 thou neck tension.

    I am not a snowflake by any means, but I do have a question: These smaller varmint loads on impact typically turn into a million pieces of tiny shrapnel, do you know if residual lead remains in the bodies to be ingested by the scavengers? I can tell you're a seasoned dog hunter and would have probably discovered dead birds of prey or coyotes or something if this was in fact the case. I was just curious what your opinion was. I did enjoy the video, by the way a 58 grain vmax from a .243 puts a whoopin on small game.

    • @cavedweller1959

      Airborn raptors have more legal protection than most any other critters out there. If there was even a ever so slight chance of our hunting birds having lead poisoning, prairie dogging on the plains would be just like waterfowl hunting---- ----Non Toxic Shot. The day that happens, due to the added expense, 90% of the shooters quit, the remaining 10% will cut back big time. The liberal left knows this. The problem with this scenario? P-Dog populations will explode, massively. What happens then?? POISON, lots and lots of poison. I saw it happen in the 90s when they tried to put them on the Endangered Species List. Land owners had no choice, kill them all or be forever burdened with federal regulations. Was not good for the dogs or our beautiful birds of prey.
      Thanks for Watching.

    • @KT-bh7hr
      @KT-bh7hr 6 років тому

      No I get it, just making conversation and I believe what you say to be true. Unfortunately, most of the large towns around here have been poisoned, and I have witnessed dead raptors and other scavengers as a result of consuming the poisoned dogs. I also agree if they outlaw lead projectiles in general, then the added cost will force most outdoorsman to call it quits. After that maybe the Bubonic Plague can make a come back lol.
