Hello. I hope you can help me with my alocasia amazonica polly. There's been a lot of humidity where i live and since saturday her leaves have a drop of water on the edges 24/7. One of the leaves, the one with less light cause of positioning, had several drops and was totally brown on the edge. Had to cut it off as it was starting to rot, basically. We didn't overwater it, only watered it once when it came (7 days ago) with rain water. We moved it to a better location yesterday, with more indirect bright light but if you have any tips i would apreciate it. Thank you.
I have a Polly, and it is definitely the happiest plant in my collection (which is weird). Usually when they have flowers, they will lose one leaf or more later one (but that's normal). That's the reason why some people cut theirs flowers before they bloom (so maybe it is what's happening with your plant). However, I let my allocasia flower, and I get more and more leaves every year during the growing season (during winter I have 2 or 3, during summer I have three times that), and the plant produced babies by herself. I don't have much light, don't fertilise that much, but I did group it with smaller plants which love humidity and water without taking her light. The plant will not forgive even few hours in the cold but they grow back during spring.
I loved your video and found it very informative. However, my elephant eat is doing something I haven't seen in any pictures or videos I can find. She doesn't have the tree like stem, and she seems to be vining out. I would love to send you a picture or video of her. So that maybe you can confirm that this is normal or what I can do to correct it if it's not. Thank you so much for your time, and I hope to hear from you. Heather
@the jungle haven So after having owned an elephant ear for 2 years now. (yay for not killing it) The stembase seems to become taller and taller, I now have the fear of it tilting over and snapping at the base. Is there anything I can or should do to reduce the base length and or the rate of which this base is growing? So far I've repotted it once with the next repot planned in Feb and pruned old or damaged leaves.
When you say "lose their leaves" does that mean the large leaves break? All but one of my large leaves have broken no matter what I used to support them. I didn't see any comments regarding the breaking of leaves. Thanks.
Hello, thank you fot the vídeo. I was wondering if you can help me. I’m scared that my plant is going to die, I love her so much, I’m really sad, I made the bad choice to put my plant outside in winter because she has mosquito, I left her 1 week and I saw she was very sad so I put her again inside. This was almost a week ago and know I’m wondering what can I do to save her, all of her leaves are completely dry but no in the natural way (like yellow) but just green and dead… can I cut all of her leaves? To hope she has new?
Hi, thank you for sharing. My plant is growing but the new leaves are very small. Only the old leaves are kinda big maybe 3/4 the size of yours. What is your advice, please? I wish I could show you my plant. Thank you.
I am so in love, almost obsessed, with these plants but I am struggling keeping any of my purchases alive. I pay GOOD money !! Are there any particular ones that might be easy for a newbie to grow???
Alocasia can be slightly tricky (or at least they were for me at first) until you get used to what they like/don't like. Certain types of monstera are great (deliciosa, standleyana, dubia, siltepecana) along with epipremnum as a genus (they all tend to be very straight forward). If you're after something super easy that doesn't require much care, also things like the ZZ plant and snake plants are great! 💚
Hi, thanks for the very informative video. I have Alocasia big elephant ear plant, and I see some waxy/creamy or looks like cold coconut oil that's solidified type residue under the leaves. Any idea what this is? I do wipe them away, but comes back.
No worries! White residue is often caused by pests (mealybugs for example leave thick white residue, but that's not usually got an oily-thickness)... Feel free to ping a photo across to me on IG and I'll have a look and do my best to help, but if it's not pest-related I'd suspect it's probably fungal
Thank you for the video! I have a question, my alocasia portodora has only one leaf left and its beginning to yellow, no new growth its developing so I don't know what I should do. What do you think?
Hiya - I'd think from what you've said it's probably going into a kind of "hibernation" state. Have you checked the roots to make sure they're not rotting or anything? Assuming they're fine, I'd suggest maybe storing the tubers (I kept my zebrina ones in the attic cause they like it fairly cool and dark, and just checked them regularly). You can then plant it back up when it comes to spring and it should grow back healthily!
@@TheJungleHaven Thank you for your answer. I checked and the roots appear to be healthy, however there are many roots. Do you recommend to repot now or should I wait until spring?
Mine is going yellow without any new growth 😢 No pests, no root rot. I had a fan circulating the room so I've turned that off because even at it's lowest setting the breeze from it feels cold. Humidity is between 60%-70%, temperature 19C-21C, and my plants are under grow lights for at least 10 hours a day. How do you store the tubers, please?
I bought some alocasias, first time owning them, the one i bought a month or so ago, is doing well and throwing out new leaves constantly, 2 more about to unfurl right now. I received one (zebrina) on wednesday (2 days ago) but its a bit bigger/older than my other one, it has 2 largeish leaves (about hand size) but 1 of them is yellowing, almost turning white in patches. the other one is still green but it points down towards the floor (its not perky) is this shock from posting? it was packaged well but i do believe it was sent on the monday and arrived on Wednesday. do i just chop that leaf? is it about to go dormant for winter? if it loses both leaves, do i remove the tubers from the soil and store them til spring? or leave them in the soil? I'm so panicked that I will do something wrong and kill her lol. This is my first winter with a plant that actively goes dormant/loses leaves, so I'm just not sure what to expect or when i need to worry xD any advice on dormancy or travel shock would be greatly appreciated.
Hi, I just got an Alocasia that had 1 leaf and is starting to yellow and get weaker. I guess its because of the change of medium, bun I'm not really sure, because it's still summer and it's not suppose to get dormant. And it also has some little bumps alog side the stem. Are those new growth?
I have a large elephant ear plant which is growing and putting out new leaves but it seems really droopy and the leaves don’t stand up well. Any idea what I should be doing?
The main things that spring to mind are light and water. Leaves can drop when the light they're receiving isn't good enough - they'll essentially sacrifice some leaves so that the main body of the plant can conserve it's energy. They can also be really sensitive to too little/too much water, so making sure you're only watering them as and when they actually need it is best. When you do water, make sure to thoroughly soak the soil so that the whole root system's targeted
man I think I messed up mine. I had repotted and split a few of the lil guys up and now everything is turning yellow and to make it worse lol I gave one of the ones to my neighbors and I can see theirs is struggling too. I hope i didn't fuck this up
Even with a humidifier i can only achieve humidity of 40-55% depending on the weather. If it rains for multiple days do i get 60%. Hope my dragon scale doesn't die :(
Hi, I've just brought home an alocasia purple sword which is not in very good soil. Should I immediately repot it into an aroid mix or wait a while? It's my first alocasia. Thank you.
GARCIAS for the video. I also subscribe to your channel. I have a Swiss cheese plant/alocasias y I noticed a white path on one of the leaves😮 I'm FREAKING out over here y need HELP! Don't know if it's spider mites, chlorophyll, underwatering, or what because when they both were shipped to me, I started to overwatering them, now I pulled back on the watering..... PLEEEASE HELP ME!!!🥺😦
I also just bought a dragon scale from Walmart. When I brought it home I checked it for pests on the leaves, but I noticed a small brown worm w/a lot of legs coming out of the soil. I now that I'm not supposed to replant or bother the roots when bringing it home, but since I saw that I had to. So I changed out the soil & watered it. Six days later it's droopy looking, and the soil still looks a bit damp. It receives the indirect morning light from my east window. Do you think it's because I disturbed the roots or is it acclimating? Could you give me a few tips, thanks.
They can be super sensitive plants when it comes to change, so it's probably just in shock. Keep it's environment as warm and humid as possible as well as making sure the soil stays moist (but not saturated). If you don't have a humidifier you could try popping it into a sealed sandwich bag - I've often found this helps when acclimating new plants 💚
"water thoroughly" and "not a believer in light watering" you must take into account that not all houses have the same conditions my house by default has +60 humidly, the cooler side and with minimum airflow. I once took the advice of "watering thoroughly" and let the pot drain for half an hour in the bathtub before placing it back this killed 2 of my Alocasias, 2 Syngoniums and 3 calatheas, cutting the rotten roots and repotting didnt help. ever since then, ive been light watering when the top soil is dry and the pot feels "lighter", haven't had any root rot issues.
You're right it could definitely be due to the time of year - as I say they tend to like it warm and bright, so maybe your plant just wasn't getting enough energy to pump out a bigger one at the moment. Fingers crossed she'll give you some great new growth soon!
My elephant ears lost all of it's leaves. It has always struggled but I am hoping that because it is winter here it is just dormant. Should I leave it in the pot or check that I am not wasting my time?
They can go into dormancy over the winter months, but if I were you I'd just check the roots to make sure there's no underlying cause such as root rot. If they look fine you can store the bulbs and plant them again come spring 💚
I'm thinking of companion planting a small Alocasia Macrorrhiza Variegated in the same pot as a medium AMV - the AMV medium is 2-3" high ... one stem ... any issues? pot is 9" wide- medium AMV is in the middle of the pot - thank you!
I wouldn't have thought you'd have issues with that - alocasias often naturally produce bulbs which grow into smaller plants in the same pot anyway, so I reckon it would be fine 💚
Misting isn't the best way to increase humidity as it's a super temporary fix and isn't very sustainable. As I mention in this video too, plants with velvety leaves don't like their leaves to get wet, so misting isn't great for them. If you don't have a humidifier give pebble trays a go, or group lots of your plants together (as they transpire they naturally provide humidity which helps the other plants out)
I truly enjoy all of your videos. I love your smile, energy and your furry four legged friend. Help! I brought my firts Alocasia home today, Alocasia Bambino. The tip of the leaf are dripping water. Why? Is it just adapting to its new environment? Also, when should I repot it, wait a couple weeks or wait until next spring?
Thank you so much! Don't panic about the plant dripping water - it's totally natural and something they do to help process any water they don't need (you'll usually notice it the day after you water your alocasia). Nothing to worry about at all 💚
95% of my plants are now not in soil. Mostly in Leca, Pon or Water. I find it easier to handle and easier to care especially when you starts to travel.
Why everyone is making the same mistake suggesting Rain water for plants. There are more chemicals, smoke and poison in the air that comes down with the rain drops. I always use my filtered water. Have a Brita water filter or use your fridge filtered water, let it sit and get the room temperature and water your plants. Much cheaper, easier and safer.
I think it depends on where abouts you live - if you're in a big polluted city then maybe, but it's honestly done wonders for my plants. That and fishtank water they absolutely lap up 💚
The stand advice to let tap water sit for 12 hours is fast becoming antiquated! Municipal water systems have largely gone over to a different type of Chlorine that stays in the water and does not evaporate out. If you kill three plants with toxic tap water, you could have paid for a Reverse Osmosis system for your home. You don't need a plumber to install it and the water is much better for YOU as well.
I use aquarium water conditioner to treat the water, like I did for my fish tank. If fish and aquatic plants were fine, why terrestrial plants wouldn't?
Man. I’ve never been able to keep plants alive. I’ve killed a cactus! I’m so scared imma kill my elephant ear! I have no idea how to feel my plants to get the right water in them 😩

now i have a table filled with alocasia plants and they usually are standing pretty good but when i water them its like they start making their stemps to full of water and just fall off. the stemps become soggy. so i cant keep the table where they stand on wet for the other plants that need it. do you have any tips or advice for me that i can use?
hope to hear from you soon. and thanks again for the video
🙂😊
I'm glad yours is going strong! Agree about the flowering - I always used to chop mine back but I thought I'd give pollination a go this time
I loved your video and found it very informative.
(yay for not killing it)
The stembase seems to become taller and taller, I now have the fear of it tilting over and snapping at the base.
Is there anything I can or should do to reduce the base length and or the rate of which this base is growing?
So far I've repotted it once with the next repot planned in Feb and pruned old or damaged leaves.
I love my alocasias! I have a pink princess whose leafs are starting to wrinkle. Too much water maybe?
Thank you for sharing
Can you do a video on calla Lilly indoors
Hi, thank you for sharing. My plant is growing but the new leaves are very small. Only the old leaves are kinda big maybe 3/4 the size of yours. What is your advice, please? I wish I could show you my plant. Thank you.
How often are you fertilizing?
Thank for reply and advise. I'm have such issues with fungus gnats. Can I use hydro porixide to kill them?

How do you know when or if Alocacia needs to be re-potted?
Hi, is that Alocasia Lime or low rider on the right? next to monstera
man I think I messed up mine.
Thank you.
I usually try to leave it about a week before repotting to allow my plants to adjust, however if you're concerned then yes maybe repot now 💚
GARCIAS for the video.
PLEEEASE HELP ME!!!🥺😦
Had one for the past year and... no new leaves! Why? What can I do?
How do you grow a bushy alocasia, if the older leaves always die off?
"water thoroughly" and "not a believer in light watering"
you must take into account that not all houses have the same conditions
my house by default has +60 humidly, the cooler side and with minimum airflow. I once took the advice of "watering thoroughly" and let the pot drain for half an hour in the bathtub before placing it back
this killed 2 of my Alocasias, 2 Syngoniums and 3 calatheas, cutting the rotten roots and repotting didnt help.
ever since then, ive been light watering when the top soil is dry and the pot feels "lighter", haven't had any root rot issues.
not only that but i have a watering log, every plant has its own profile where i write down the dates, to avoid overwatering.
Can I wipe the leaves off the alocasia Polly with a wet towel?
My alocasia has its leaves down. I do not know what to do. Help!
What type of alocasia is the one on the top left?
Mine has put out a really small and short leaf and stoped growing... Probably bcs its winter but that small leaf disapointed me.
3:51 Which Alocasia is this? 😊
Can you spray the leaves with water to increase humidity ?
Nothing to worry about at all 💚
Sat down wine in hand…now show me ones I need 😂😂
Ahaha CHEEEERS! 🥂
95% of my plants are now not in soil. Mostly in Leca, Pon or Water. I find it easier to handle and easier to care especially when you starts to travel.
I totally agree - I'm going to transfer more of mine over soon (I've totally fallen in love with pon)
That and fishtank water they absolutely lap up 💚
@@TheJungleHaven I am in Southern California. far from big cities, desert climate. Fish tank water is the best. 😎
Any irritant issues for you and your pet due to allocasia?
The stand advice to let tap water sit for 12 hours is fast becoming antiquated! Municipal water systems have largely gone over to a different type of Chlorine that stays in the water and does not evaporate out. If you kill three plants with toxic tap water, you could have paid for a Reverse Osmosis system for your home. You don't need a plumber to install it and the water is much better for YOU as well.
I use aquarium water conditioner to treat the water, like I did for my fish tank. If fish and aquatic plants were fine, why terrestrial plants wouldn't?
I water mine when it’s dry and then the leaves drip…why?
It's totally normal and is just transpiration (kind of like your plant breathing/sweating and getting rid of anything it doesn't need) 💚
Man. I’ve never been able to keep plants alive. I’ve killed a cactus! I’m so scared imma kill my elephant ear! I have no idea how to feel my plants to get the right water in them 😩
IMO these plants are actually "easier" than succulents cause it's usually more obvious when they actually need a drink 💚
Why are my Elephant Ear tubes clear
