The Wide-Screen Beauty Of A Cutesy Experimental Sampler

  • I had to support the Kickstarter of Chompi - a tape-like looping SK-1 style sampler? I need this! Problem is: will I be able to play it myself? It looks so cute my youngest already called dibs. I had to make this video quickly, so she could experiment with it herself. I was surprised into what dark experimental depths it drew me, despite its utterly charming design.

  • @deastman2

I’ve been playing with my CHOMPI for a few days now. What I’ve found to be a really interesting workflow is to layer up multiple samples in the looper, then copy the loop buffer back to the sampler buffer. That becomes a new composite instrument which you can play- clear the loop buffer and start over with this new composite instrument. I agree with a lot of your comments, particularly that all of the shift functions should have been labeled on the front panel. There needs to be a level control for sampled voice playback. I’ve also encountered the issue where voices don’t always play, which I assume is a bug. I also feel that the silly names for modes and buffers- CHOMPI, JAMMI, CUBBI- obscures their true functions and adds unnecessary confusion. Despite the limitations, I’m finding CHOMPI to be a fun, immediate, creative instrument, and absolutely capable of making real music.

      Well I am a newbie!
My knowledge of audio synthesis is thin but I get the basics of what is happening.
At first I just took a look at this thinking it was a joke.
Then I put my phones on!
It seems that they have gotten away from grey, black and silver.
Away from old fashioned knobs, patch bays and the like and turned the whole learning kerb of synths to the opposite direction.
      And why not?
With the way its laid out, labelled, signed for its functions, bright colours etc they have entered the market for NEWBIES to make music not knowing the first thing about synthesis.
      Is this bad?
      Definitely NO.
Why spend years learning how synths work when its there on a plate for you to make music.
No...its not a toy totally revolutionary.
A kid could master this quickly.
I think of it this way.
The curtains are drawn, you are behind them and asked to listen to some synth music.
Five minutes later the curtains are opened to reveal a six year old playing a pink toy, plastic fairy tale box.
I think you will be mind blown.
      I am deffo getting one.
Btw...Pink is a MAN colour don't you know.
      Moog freaks watch out.
This thing is on your tail!

I must admit, I really appreciate your honesty about the slightly janky UI, which is something I always felt the promo videos glossed over. I also know how much you love slowed-down tape, and the interpolation on this is great, so I wasn't at all surprised when your first thing was to slow it way down 😆
I find samplers like this really cute, but for some reason my love of hardware instruments just doesn't extend to samplers. I guess sampling is just so much more chaotic with so many more dimensions to it, that I feel lost without a proper computer to map out what I'm doing. I might consider this once the OS firms up and goes through a few more debugging iterations and more user-requested features are added. One mechanical bit that I would be concerned about is the little switch to the left of the Chompi button. It looks like it may be getting flipped many times during a session.

I have all kinds of hardware samplers already but obviously the only way I am going to get into and be a heavy hitter in the Toycore Scene for 2024 is to get one of these even though I already have a Microsampler. Wish me luck, I guess.

Why is it so hard to find a hardware synth that can do the real-time tape speed manipulation (fast, slow, reverse) as this device does? Such an amazing feature for ambient and soundscapes. The OP-1 can do a little of this, but not as flexible. The closest I could find in my search was the Instruo Lubadh or Make Noise Morphagene, but that’s eurorack ofc. Anyway, I bought a Chompi. I think it’s unique.

Hello lovely people, can anyone recommend any music with this kind of sound 12:56, the bit where Hainbach fist pumps and makes the "ooph nice" face?
I have adhd and have found this tone to really calm and ground my brain like nothing else, so far ive found similar in Breakcore, jungle, dubstep and drone, but really want to expand my musical knowledge. Any help much appreciated. Happy new year peeps 🤘❤️

This thing is more of an effects box more than anything, and a rather expensive one at that at $500.
Also have you considered replacing your battered old OP1 with a Roland MC101? They basically do the same thing snd the MC101 has a crazy synth engine and midi in

@@Hainbach I tell what might also work that crafty people might have access to - laser engraving. Do a few tests on similar keys/plastics, and get engraving.
You get to preserve your injection molded keys and get your functions engraved onto the front side of your keys as certain types of 3D printing can be flawed and not suited to smaller items like keys.

I was surprised, it seems the played notes are pitch shifted without affecting the time/length of the sample? I expected the played notes to be repitched using varispeed, as on an old school sampler (e.g., Casio SKs), but this seems like Roland’s Variphrase?

    • @Hainbach
      @Hainbach  5 місяців тому +1

No they are re-pitched - I think the effects just hide that very well.
