I have watched every single REFFOID episode. I am so utterly impressed, entertained, and informed by everything you've accomplished here. It's actually insane how much your opinion mirrors my own, and that's never been truer for this review of Rebirth. I love how fun this game is, and I cannot fathom how people wish there were LESS mini games and more combat. But, I don't want to derail from this astonishing accomplishment you've achieved. Honestly Tom you should take a bow, a nap, have a drink, and just soak in the pride of this incredible feat you've conquered. I will be here and eagerly awaiting the next one. You crushed it dude, plain and simple (and clean). Let's ride the unknown journey into the future. DUN DUN DUN DUUUUUH, DUN DUN DA-DA, DUUUUUUH!
Yep, can relate on the completionist nightmare that was that fog of war. Cait Sith relies on Luck for his best damage. Fortune Telling while riding the moogle is his best move with High Luck. Edit on the Gi: Because they can't rejoin the planet, their consciousness lives on and on and on... they want to destroy the Planet so they could finally rest. Edit on Glenn : I think Glenn is, Like Sephiroth, acting through the Robed men. He most likely got experiemented on by Hojo. Also: A father's dream accomplished by his son... ... ...
Man, what do I even say? I really put myself in a pickle leaving a comment on every REFFOID episode, because how do I sum up my massive web of positive feelings towards this project now that it's officially caught up with where the series is now? I don't know. I really don't. I just know that I really appreciate everything you've put into it. This series has been a massive comfort to me from the first moment I found it. It's helped me get by many times where I was feeling overwhelmed with the general day-to-day minutia of life. From the core of my heart, thank you. But to comment on this game specifically, I actually haven't played it yet, but I've already been spoiled so much on it that I was fine watching this all the way through. Although, I probably would've done so anyway seeing as how monumental this video is. I actually don't mind what I've heard/seen of how they handled the story here. But that might be because I've already gone through my stages of grief from the first installment and came out the other side of it realizing I'm still excited to see where this leads as a sequel rather than a remake. Haha. I also have to admit I enjoy the KH3 style of storytelling in the sense of where the ending is jam-packed and moving at the speed of a runaway train. So long as it's handled well, of course. In any case, I'm really happy to have followed along with this series all this time, and I look forward to continuing to do so in the future. I'm so happy to hear there will be future FF content! Although I'm sincerely excited to see everything else you have in store for the channel as well. I really enjoy your commentary and artistic voice, so I'll absolutely stick around to check out all that you're cooking up. I'm really not sure what's left for me to say. A ton, I'm sure, but I'm too overwhelmed right now. This series has meant a lot to me, as I'm sure it has to many others as well. I literally just said it already, but I want to say it again: I have a lot of gratitude and respect for what you've accomplished here; Thank you.
Not to get parasocial or anything, but I sincerely appreciate the positive impact you've had on me over the last year and a half. That already means a lot to me, no additional hearts required.
As someone who also loved the minigames and exploration and character building of Rebirth, I thought I was going crazy when I saw everyone complaining about these elements. Thank you so much for this series! I really enjoyed re experiencing this series with you and hearing your take. I am excited for what you have for us in the future! Also, Just a heads up if you ever replay hard mode, the benches in the open world that require a cushion still recover MP. Think this was done because trying to complete a chapter AND do all the side quests/open world with just that MP for that chapter would be crazy hard, so I just restored my MP before entering that chapter’s “dungeon.”
@@TomLazanat least this means you are a true pro gamer. Because god knows I couldn’t have done that 😅 Oh and Cait Sith’s hold square attack on the moogle builds a LOT of ATB. He still is a bit harder to play than everyone else though because you still have to have the moogle and balance that, but there is at least one single way to build a lot of ATB with him.
Can’t wait to listen to this on my drive tomorrow! Rebirth is one of only 3 games I put as a 10/10 on my personal “playing every final fantasy game” journey. It shares a spot with Final Fantasy XI & Tactics as a game that brings me an immense amount of joy, despite the obvious shortcomings. It’s definitely a bit of a “hear me out” for my list, but I’ll stand my ground and say that Rebirth is the kingdom hearts game we always deserved.
I discovered this project this year, and slowly throughout the year, I've watched every one! As someone who discovered and played almost all of these games myself, this was a really fun and relaxing way to revisit them, and I enjoyed seeing how your perspective differed from my own. You should be proud of yourself for sticking with this!
42:09 I’m that other person. I cleaned up the ENTIRE map, every single area, combing up and down and all around to reveal every inch I possibly could. Now the reason I did this was for 100% purposes but I also just genuinely enjoy the act of simply *playing* the game, so I was never in pain doing this. The only part that sucked was indeed the ocean and that was only because the minimap goes away so I kept having to enter the map over and over again. Edit: also I’m just gonna say this now, Gongaga was my favorite area in the whole game and my favorite area to explore as well. I know it’s tough as shit to see where you’re going but that turned it into a sort-of puzzle box for me to solve not by using a convenient map feature but by literally looking at the world around me and figuring it out myself. That was where true immersion had me in its clutches and I was so disappointed when I realized I had fully explored everything in the jungle. I understand why plenty of folks hate navigating the jungle but for me, that challenge was where the game was most engaging and most immersive and I loved it. Edit 2: As for the materia management, the one request I have is for it to work EXACTLY LIKE THE ORIGINAL GAME. You could swap entire characters’ materia loadouts between one another, select just the weapon set of materia, just the armor set, or individual materia. I see no reason why this can’t be an option in Rebirth. Hopefully the PC port here next month will address this. Materia management was definitely the most tedious part of using the menu in this game.
28:24 Chadley is the bane of my existence but the fact that the AI Chadley created an AI helper that just ended up annoying him the whole time definitely helped a little bit
The fog of war is to have continuity to R3. We are going to have an air ship where we can unlock those areas that we couldn’t hear. Also, I wish they would link the access to a weapon (like FFX) or make it a skill tree ability. Some of the side quest extremely hard and made it impossible for me to platinum the game. Still cant so all the songs right. And hard mode fort condor didn’t finish. While I think if I dump like 20hrs into it, I could do it. But I dumped almost 30hrs into piano and still didn’t get it so kinda discouraged me to put that time into fort condor.
Great review. I agree with a lot of your points, though I personally enjoyed the story quite a bit more than you did at the end. I could be wrong, but if the story is going where I think it is, then I'm 100% here for it. This game honestly managed to make me feel like I was 11 years old again, playing FFVII for the first time. That's not an experience I ever thought I could have again, and somehow the development team gave it to me, so I really couldn't be happier with how this Remake Project has turned out so far. As far as your story analysis, I do want to point out a few things. The Claudia stuff wasn't actually part of the new meta narrative that the games have going on. That instance was a Jenova Cells related thing that was also in the original game's version of the flashback as well, except instead of green flashes, the OG had white flashes. That's one of the few things I will count as a negative against the Remake Trilogy. Sometimes the same visual imagery can be used to represent two completely different things. The big example being the green flashes. When Aerith is the one causing them to happen, it's usually a sign of the meta narrative, and her future sight abilities. When they happen around Cloud, it's usually a sign of Cloud's memory issues. Also, Tifa getting cut by Sephiroth in the Nibelheim flashback actually did happen in the original game, but the fallout between Cloud and Tifa that occured as a result in Rebirth, did not happen in the OG. In the OG, Cloud just says: "Yeah, it was really bad Tifa. I didn't think you were going to make it." And then that plot point never comes up again. Tifa gets cut, survives, and Cloud is really relieved. That's it. Also, about Red, the reason why his personality changes is because Red is essentially like Cloud. He acts cool at first, but it is just an act. He's really just a guy who isn't particularly sure of himself, and is putting on this act so that others will take him seriously. He changes his attitude later in the game because the party makes him feel accepted, so he doesn't feel a need to put on the act anymore when he's around them, and opens himself up to them completely. They do actually tease this reveal at two other points in Rebirth, where Red and Aerith are talking alone, and he drops the act around her, since she already knew his secret. Red's face is kept off camera during these moments, so the player doesn't know for sure who Aerith is actually speaking to, and is left to wonder about it until the full reveal when we reach Cosmo Canyon. For the Gi, their goal in making the Black Materia wasn't actually to kill the Cetra. I mean...that would happen if they used it, but it was more a side-effect of their goal, rather than their actual main goal. Their true goal was to use the Black Materia to complete destroy themselves. They basically figured that if the planet wouldn't accept them, then their only hope to know peace was to embrace oblivion. They hoped that summoning the most powerful destructive magic ever created would allow them to destroy themselves completely and utterly, so that not even their spirits remained, and they could FINALLY die. Yes this would mean destroying the planet, and everyone else on it too...but the Gi don't care. They just really....REALLY want to die, and if that requires taking everything else with them too, then that's how it has to be. Basically the whole point of the Gi is to show that existing for eternity, which is what Sephiroth actually wants, is quite possibly the worst thing ever A worse fate than death. Tseng being stabbed happened in the original game too, so they just took that scene, and recreated in Rebirth. This next part is still just a theory, until part 3 directly confirms it, but I feel pretty confident that Aerith is most likely just a spirit in the lifestream, like she was in the Advent Children movie. Cloud could see and speak to her in that film as well, and their coversations tyically happened in a white void like space, similar to the space where Cloud, Aerith and Sephiroth have their final battle in Rebirth. I'm about 98% sure that Rebirth is just showing us the origin of their spiritual connection from Advent Children, while also setting up that Cloud is in full blown denial that she's dead, and Aerith has to go along with his fantasy to keep his mind from breaking completely. To me, it looks like the game is setting up for Cloud to go through all the stages of grief, and I think that's awesome. I also don't think we're dealing with alternate timelines at all. I think these worlds are, as Aerith puts it, dreams. They're realities that exist only within the lifestream, and are made from the memories of the planet, as well as the memories and desires of the souls within the lifestream. Also, I don't think Zack and Biggs are alternate versions of the characters that we know. They are literally just our Zack and Biggs, unaware of the fact that they actually died in the physical world, and are now in the lifestream. Finally, with Glenn, the good news about that is that he was apparently created for the story of the Remake Trilogy first, and the decision to make him a playable character in Ever Crisis came later, so hopefully the important parts of his story will be properly explained in the actual trilogy. Fingers crossed.
Yeah my memory of the original is definitely fuzzy so I don’t remember that Claudia or Tseng moment. I remember Tifa getting cut and thrown down the stairs but I don’t remember blood or thinking it was serious. As for Red, I know there were those 2 moments and the one at the beach, it’s nice to think of it as him being comfortable with the group, but my problem is that doesn’t feel earned at all. Red doesn’t have many character building moments until that point, him being comfortable with Aerith happens off screen, and there’s no big confession or reveal, he literally just switches in a second. It could’ve been handled a lot better. Also it’s just my personal opinion that I don’t enjoy the new Red character much and liked the old version. I’m almost positive that Aerith is a lifestream spirit like you said, it makes sense but they will absolutely use it as an excuse to shove her into scenes she doesn’t need to be in. Zack & Biggs reference that they were swooped away from where we last saw them, so yes that adds credence to that theory. I thought using the term “timeline” was easier to understand but maybe “worlds” would’ve been better as Sephiroth says. Good to hear about Glenn but since the mobile game came first he’ll always be “from” that. Regardless I’m not expecting that part of the story to pay off well. Hope I’m wrong.
For me gongoga was the highlight of the story. The fact that it so heavily focused on Cloud and Tifa was subversion at it's best and great setup for part 3, and I get the gripes about the ending but I maintain that we don't have closure because Cloud is in denial and because the perspective on the story is through his eyes and he naturally struggles with failing people close to him. We the player are forced to feel his same indifference about this moment and others. It's controversial choice to be sure but I love that everything is so hyper focused on Cloud's feelings and perspective. I always felt people didn't have enough appreciation for his arc in the original and all of the decisions that the devs make with this project tell me that the devs feel the same way I do. The ending is supposed to be confusing and uncomfortable because Cloud is far more unstable now and that is excing because his triumph will be so satisfying.

If i had a nickel for every time I needed to press the circle button to perform context sensitive parkour in the second entry of a mainline final fantasy game, i'd have 15 cents. which isn't a lot but it's strange that it happened 3 times
One last comment and then I will shut up, if you are as much of a Queen’s Blood head as I am, some mad lad made a fully playable online version that you can play with real people! It is very fun. I can’t post the direct link but if you google queens blood online it should come up real quick and easy.
