I was just listening to an album I really love - a 2023 release - last night and thinking that I enjoy every song. A quick confirmation showed ten tracks. Next time I opened UA-cam, your video came up at the top of the heap for recommended videos. Coincidence?!
Hi .. that’s very serendipitous. I know it’s a generalisation but I do think there’s something honest about having 10 tracks on an album not over complicating things and just having the confidence to celebrate your craft … thanks for watching and commenting it was great hearing from you 👍😃
@@robwalkerletthemusicplay Yes, it’s one of the things I wonder about sometimes. CD bloat often makes me think the band could have gone for 10-12 songs instead of 15-17, and the album would be that much more enjoyable. I like the idea some bands have followed with having a shorter album made for vinyl or CD and then including a bonus disc of additional material. I find it easier to accept the extra music that way.
Gorgeous Prefab album amongst many shown here, Rob. I hope you've managed to acquire the rest of them. Paddy has only ever let us down by not releasing his archives.
Nice selections Rob. I had a nice experience the other day. Got the strokes is this it and beach boys surfer girl. Not sure they meet the 10 track criteria but got home and listened to them in both in less than an hour. Made me appreciate single lp albums so much more
Hi ,I do think CDs changed the listening experience I certainly don’t think I took the time to bond with CDs in the way I do with records . I still buy CDs they offer such good value, as a rule though I still prefer 10 track albums thanks for watching and commenting 👍
Hi .. yes of course I was genrerlising I just happened to be playing some of my favourite albums and noticed they all had 10 tracks so thought it would be a fun idea to talk about. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
Never thought of this before. Fun thought... experiment, yeah, it is a perfect amount, 5x5! Prefab Sprout, Elbow, Echo & the Bunnymen... Yeah, you know me so well 😄 Thank you for a fun video Rob 😀
I watched this on my TV ages ago and am finally getting around to commenting! I wouldn't say the best have 10 tracks, but I think the classic single LP format has 10 tracks, 5 on each side. I usually comment on that when I do my new release round-ups. I noticed in 2023 that a far greater proportion of LPs had 10 tracks, sometimes 11, compared to 2022 when there were more short doubles. I reckon in 2022 they were still mostly producing c60min CD length records and then converting to vinyl as a double. Whereas in 2023 the standard had shifted to the single vinyl Lp as being the benchmark. Interesting video, Rob, and nice mix of records. Cheers
Hi Andy I think you make a good point regarding a significant change due to increasing vinyl sales .. most 90s album rarely fit on a single album that’s why so many people mention 90s albums work better on CDs … thanks for watching Andy your comments are always appreciated 👍
Fun video Rob, and a neat approach to bring some of your faves to the table. Albums with 10 tracks is the sweet spot, as you say. Black Grape haven't seen in a long time. Kudos! 🎶😎🎸
Hi Ed .. this was a nice excuse to show some of my favourite albums .. particularly in the cd age artist seemed obsessed with 15/16 track albums .. I just wanted to make the point that sometimes less is more .. thanks for watching 👍
Hi Rob, i think 10 tracks is almost the perfect number of track but obviously there are glaring exceptions to that rule. i used to have a bit of a beef with the advent of compact disks and every artist thought they had to utilise the full 70+ minutes thus getting a lot of substandard tracks or filler on their albums (technically making every album a double album) . great little video though - Lloyd
Hi Lloyd .. yeah that’s how I felt about the advent of CDs. Thinking back I bonded with less albums and I think the fact that bands included so many substandard tracks had an influence. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
Hi Rob - Love that Prefab Sprout record " Knock On Wood " my favourite track with Cars & Girls a funny dig at Bruce Springsteen a favourite as well. Cool Pepsi shirt 👕 ! Norwich only need a draw to get in the playoffs. I'm confident they'll get that !
I'm with you Rob. I've been meaning to do a similar video from a slightly different perspective but similar, so I may respond or may make this month's lost in the collection themed around this. Cheers Dale
Hi dale. , I know you’re not a lover of single albums stretched onto 2 discs .. I own a few and I’ve decided I’m going to try to avoid those releases if at all possible..good idea to incorporate this idea into a the collection episode 👍
Hi Jon .. the smiths debut is a classic .. the first time I heard it I knew it was special.. I don’t think Ian bettered his debut. I listen to it regularly.. thanks for watching 👍
One of the ways in which I found CDs to be disappointing was the length. Sometimes, the albums were simply way too long. I thnk you are right, at least about the records I am familiar with in this video!
Hi Brian I think one of the reasons I began to stop listening to some new music was I found some CDs daunting and a bit self indulgent as a rule I think most albums do benefit from my 10 tracks rule 😀
Doesn't hold weight Rob, there were too many great Beatles albums with 14 tracks back in the sixties.😜 Fun video though. There are some monster 10-trackers including Approved by the Motors which is possibly my favourite album of all time. I think AC/DC have always done 10-track albums throughout their career. Are you seeing Martin MacAloon when he supports Thomas Dolby at the Ritz in Manchester later this year? I'll be there.
Hi James .. there’s countless great albums with over 10 tracks .. but 10 tracks is always my preference, it’s a shame paddy is unable to perform live I’m so lucky to have seen them on the Jordan tour .. I saw REM at the ritz in 85 I thought these are good 😃.. thanks for watching and commenting James 👍
@@robwalkerletthemusicplay Yeah, good things are mostly not on the horizon world wise it seems... That would have made people all over the world perk up, in stead we got just another ‘meh…’ Spain isn’t the worst thing, just their culture isn’t really in my wheelhouse. At least France didn’t win.
Some great choices Rob, although there are plenty of albums around 40 min running time that have more than 10 tracks and have no filler..Sheer Heart Attack by Queen being a classic example..13 songs and every one is killer ( Queen)..😂
Hi Rob , I was genralising we all have favourite albums with more than 10 tracks but I’ve always preferred 10 tracks .. I do have sheer heart attack and it nearly gave me one😀 thanks for watching and commenting 👍

Good choices Rob, im with you on the 10 tracks, as well as the Smiths The Queen is Dead is also 10 and what an album that is, probably my favourite of the 80s

To be honest Rob,I never really payed a great deal of attention to an albums track count. If an album had a load of tracks on it then that was good value for money to me. I've got the first two you showed and I think "The Sound Of The Crowd" is my fave tune on Dare 👍 Joanne from The Human League was a bit of alright 👍😁👍
Hi nick .. I just thought it was an interesting idea for a video .. plus I’ve lost count of the number of videos I watch that mentions filler .. sound of the crowd is a classic .. plus I knew you’d appreciate my love for new boots and panties 👍
I forgot about that Human League LP. I used to have it on cassette but it went gonzo. One of my favs is Can’t Buy a Thrill from Steely Dan. 10 tracks and no fillers.

Depends how long the songs are.beatles lps uk had 14tracks but lasted 30 minutes ish.later lps had ten tracks but longer songs.then is quality more important than song length
Hi .. I know i was generalising but i needed to explain the video quickly , I didn’t really want to go into exceptions but I agree many great albums had multiple tracks but that’s for another video .. thanks for watching and commenting 👍
