Awesome camera work, kudos to the pilot as well. Nice to hear narration from an experienced sailor (thanks Sally!). Having the audio from the boat is a master touch. Jealous!
Need more of this instead of split-second and stylized edits of the boats sailing. There is nothing more cool than watching one of these amazing and beautiful machines flying over the water- for MINUTES instead of seconds.
Great coverage! Great commentary! Cooler than...something. I forget what. It's 1:30 on the morning here near Seattle AND I DON'T WANT TO STOP WATCHING!!!!!! Thank you Volvo!
Wow, I'm looking at it now for the fourth time, this footage! It's addicting. Seeing Mapfre with masthead zero, J2 and J3 is just a beautiful view. We visited Lisbon for in-Port race and the start of this leg 2 and then it's really nice to relive it back home with these videos. Just great. I would welcome a live stream of the webcams showing sailing say for one hour a day, just like you had these videos with dash cams of cars riding through cities and landscapes. Thanks VOR!
We are glad you like it so much. Thanks for coming to visit us in Lisbon, by the looks of it it was well worth it ;) You've got a great suggestion, we'll forward it to the team. Sail Safe Henk! ⛵️🌏
Amazing ! Unreal! Fantastic coverage ! Good luck to all you "Ocean Gladiators" will be following you all around the globe for the next 9 months !!! Cheers from North Island New Zealand .
Hi ,this is great footage super on the big screen ,great commentary and Sally knows lots which helps us understand , as they say here in Calgary its not her first Rodeo thanks guys
LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT !!!! INCREDIBLE FOOTAGE, INCREDIBLE SAILING !WATCHING IT IN POWELL RIVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA 'S WEST COAST, CANADA.YOU ARE DOING A GREAT JOB, GOOD COMMENTS TOO. THANKS A BUNCH, EH .
Fantastic +charles jorvic! We'll see you there! Don't forget to subscribe to our channel so you don't miss any of the action! You can do that here > goo.gl/BzBCwU
Wow. Great stuff. Love the onboard audio with the heli shots. One small request for any future heli shots, please zoom out a little. When the whole hull and more rig is in shot it give a much better idea of sea state.
😋 Takes me back to my days of racing on Lake Ontario on a 65ft J boat, NOT! we were lucky to get 12knots in a 25knot breeze. Sailing technology sure has come a long way.
Can you pass the dry towel please? :) Amazing boats, amazing pictures. Favourite bit: the surf of Scallyweg at 13:30 (and the fall down right into the wave).
How do they even stay on the boat?!? I’d be in the drink by now. Best of luck to all the crews but I’m casting my lot with Vestas just to support my countryman Enright.
Great footage!! Thanks! ..I guess its the best and most efficient design for the bow so far, but it makes the boat very wet. Anyone knows about the matter? Thanks
Amazing footage: totally love it. 1 request: please ZOOM OUT a bit more so we can see a couple of waves in front of the boat. not always such tight shots. that said, bravo on showing the reefing -- always wondered how that would work in conditions like this.
Hi +Robert Lakos! We totally understand! Our helicopter was out capturing a variety of shots per boat for our archive, images we can use later in our edits. (You'll see a pattern with every boat, some wide angle shots, and after that tight 'glamour' shots). We were lucky our excellent TV crew was able to get those images transmitted to shore over a distance of over 45km live. Hence why we went live with the images and why it is sometimes so close up. We are glad you liked it nonetheless!😊⛵️🌎
Hi +maxhugen! They carry a gennaker (the A3) which is similar to a spinnaker but it is a furling sail. Hope that answers your question! And we are glad you love the footage!💪🏼⛵️🌎
+Volvo Ocean Race I wonder why you'd get a reef in before taking down the j3 or something, does the main generate more forward force than the jibs because of it's height? Or is the jib just more cumbersome?
Hi +Masus04! Its all about finding the balance between the sails. in the instance of downwind sailing, the boat is genrally more balanced with more sail area at the front of the boat as it lifts the bow out of the water, therefore you would take a reef before dropping the j3😊🌎⛵️
Praise where it's due - good footage. Really interesting to see the different set ups and trim on board. What don't they just keep the fractional foresails up, furled and ready to go? Is the extra windage of a furled sail really that much of a hit on boat speed? When the wind is powered up like that I wonder if it's better to have the options available instead? Do they worry about losing weight out of the stack?
hey, someone can tell me more about "apparent wind sailing"? not sure if this term is correct but i really like to read more about that concept... thank you!
Hi +Preacher Rock! It is to do with the angle to the wind the boats sail at, even when they want to go dead down wind like they do now, we call it VMG running, they sail much higher angles as its faster to sail the extra distance than to go dead down wind. So you are right the boom is trimmed in because the apparent wind angle is so far forward due to their speed and the angel they sail at.
Volvo Ocean Race the TV coverage is exponentially better every year. Thank you so much... Since I have a Walter Mitty mindset, I feel like I have no need to try to experience but sailing at this level myself cuz it feels like I'm right there with them
Hi Guys, Check out this amazing bonus footage from our helicopter and onboard cameras! it is INSANE!👊🏻🌏⛵️🚨🚨
Volvo Ocean Race en
This is the coverage that got me addicted to the Ocean Race and to the Volvo65 boats.

AMAZING
I notice they're tacking downwind - do these yachts carry a spinnaker? Oh, and thanks for the awesome footage. :)

Hi, I would like to get a original section of this Film, around Minute 9:40 - the distance Shot from the Helicopter. Any Idea?
hey, someone can tell me more about "apparent wind sailing"? not sure if this term is correct but i really like to read more about that concept... thank you!
Is there a reason why when on a broad reach or virtually downwind that the boom is set for a beam reach
Hi +Preacher Rock! It is to do with the angle to the wind the boats sail at, even when they want to go dead down wind like they do now, we call it VMG running, they sail much higher angles as its faster to sail the extra distance than to go dead down wind. Greetings from Colorado! Anyone ever try to water ski off the stern of one of these bad boys?
Not as far as I know! But I'm sure it's possible +Mark Elliott ⛵️🌎⛷

Great to hear +Mark Elliott!
Ouais...
I had seen it done behind one of the previous generation Volvo 70s but not one of these.
spettacolare 30kn speed e sembra semplice, ma 30kn sailing is terrific
+Vittorio Armeniaco ⛵️⛵️🌎
Great,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Under these conditions surely must be a no no but do they have auto pilot?
+Charles K. Walbaum no auto pilot on board! All sailing is done by a sailor at the helm 24/7!
30 knot boat speed 20 knot wind speed
Que imagem linda
Dear devils 👌❤❤️
What are their knots😧
If I were there, I would die of Eforia!!!
... the distance Shot from 9:26 ...
28:00
