Black clothes, no PFD, no safety harness, that was a miracle for Scallywag to find and recover their crew member.
What I just said. Perhaps someone can enlighten us on the reason for lack of safety equipment for these fantastic sailors.

Yeah that was crazyness. I've drilled this many times and it's hard enough to find a yellow dummy. A signal colour helmet with reflectors might be more helpful, you can see a fishing buoy for miles.
I watched along the entire way via daily updates and in-port videos, and I found myself somewhat depressed when it was over. Epic journey for all who participated, for sure. As a bystanding observer, I offer my utmost gratitude to the participants and to the production crews who made the entire race accessible to someone like me. And thank you for capping it off with this excellent highlight reel. FISH 4-ever!

@@TheOceanRace Are there episodes like there were in 2014? I watched the 30 something episodes two or three times, but can't find that same thing for the 2018 race. Thank you for this!

Impossible not getting emotional watching this.
Nothing even comes close! In my opinion, there are no losers in this race! Finishing with all your crew onboard is more than just a great accomplishment; it's something only a handful of people can say!

Heavens, what an eye opener, so emotional! Now in 2023, a few days into Leg 4, wondering what is still waiting for the five yachts. Again, things can happen at the flicker of an eye. A stark reminder that the Ocean Race is not a video game but a matter of live and death. Sending a prayer and all good wishes to each and every sailor. May they all be safe.
I simply wanted to drop a thank you - for the awesome coverage, for the effort and the hours put into compiling this. But much more than that, I tip my hat to all the sailors, on all boats, for having the mettle, the will and the strength to sail this race.
A loss of life, such as it happened, is always tragic. I remember thinking about it for a long time, when I heard the news - and also remembering it, when I last stepped on a sailboat. There are no fitting words, except that Fish's name and dedication to sailing, not just the race, will be remembered.
For the next instance of the race, I wish sailors, shore-crew, race organizers, reporters, media specialists, logistic specialists - everyone - success, health and a lot of fond memories to make :)
Hell of an adventure! Saying it was epic is an understatement. Counting the days for the next edition.

Undoubtedly one of the best coverage (multi-media) events around today, no "hysterical, ill-informed" commentators or "experts". In Aust telecast appears on SBS later at night, hence this download a far more agreeable time.
A Fabulous movie, great shots, very well done, fabulous boats, great skippers, great crews, great technology, great suits and outfit, great velocity, great sponsors, great number of legs... Etc.!

A beautiful story told. For those who go down to the Sea, it is Life and to lose John Fisher is heartbreaking but those who knew him will forever hold him in their hearts and those, like myself, who did not know him will hold him in our hearts as we look windward knowing on our lee the emotionless Sea has the advantage.
Thank you to the team for sharing all the content; from race 1 to the daily updates, to the RAW episodes. An amazing journey expertly captured and shared. I am inspired.
Even if a mouse was trapped on one of these boats and finished the race alive, hes a fucking hero in my eyes.

really excellent summary of all the footage of the race! I was just looking at the latest from the Vendee Globe to satisfy the misery drug but the Volvo has always been special to me; tried to get on a team when I was in the early twenties but now I realize I had no idea what I was getting into...will see you at the start of the next one!

Amazing accomplishment to even finish this!
The most insightful moment here - was with the lady's team - all under their 30s and didn't know they should be afraid. That describes my first Atlantic crossing (following the 2000 Cape to Rio Race) on a 9m ketch (yes for real) - with no electrics except an old car battery and umm - not much - but a lot of water ballast. Captain: Joan de Kat (French he was about 74-76 yrs old in 2000) We sailed from Cape Town to Salvador - but he arrived here in Cape Town after living for 20 years on some forgotten island in Tahiti. He got the ketch there (aluminum/steel I think?) from The Alien Society (yes that is what he said - they thought the world was gonna go like that movie: Waterworld - which is why we had so much water onboard and they designed the boat to last a kind of apocalypse). Dang thing is - can't remember the name of the boat - and neither can my ex-boyfriend (ex french navy) who was with me. The trip was so surreal - and so long ago - and quite traumatic in the end - although amazing and wonderful at times. Its a book :) I turned 30 in the Doldrums off the coast of Brazil. Captain refused to use the engine. We arrived in Salvador the day after the CARNIVAL ended - to streets of litter and no-one to be seen. Has anyone here heard of Joan de kat (he was famous in his day in France he told us, and wrote a book ? won a big event?) I'd love a followup of what happened to that mental guy? :)
Actually, I never feel afraid on boats. Possibly I should. join a crew for the next race - if those inexperienced girls could do it, I could too? It just occurred while watching the video - also I have never sailed the southern sea and I want to (must be mental too) .. Yikes :)
Ja, and actually in those days I was simply sailing - and teaching NAUI and PADI along the way. But we had no mobiles. No web - none of this stuff now. So, there are 2 other important (this time very excellent and nice captains) I am seeking: 1. Captain Philippe Gravier of Ll'orca Yacht (motor yacht twin Perkins) Phillipines - and Captain: Frank Stocker of the Nan Shan - a spectacular Pirate ship built in Stockholm and at the time owned by a german guy who owned MacDonalds there - he never joined the boat and allowed us crew the most amazing freedom (as much as I knew) (both I spent time training with) - and nowadays - I dont' know how to find them?

and I recall he said the boat was built in sweden (this must be right - there is nothing more amazing than the Nan Shan) where did she go??? she got refitted here in Cape Town at Simonstown military base (went and met the crew onboard and had a massive party - Captain Frank believes in blasting music at sea - an unusual and very fun trait - a few years after I sailed with them down from Thailand to Malaysia (for fun we rode some squalls and hit 17 knots easy- i sat in the net in the bowsprit for that - wooohoo - in a bikini. as I recall lol ) - and back to my island of Koh Tao -must've been 1995 /96/87 so she got refitted here iabout 2000?
specifically - at Simonstown Military base (a few kms from where I live now) - they could redo - was it the chrome? some metal stuff they could do for Nan Shan. Yet non of that went in any media because in those days, we pretty much had zero digital content (and that is why they are so so precious to me). It was just about us - and our experience - and our friendship - nothing else attached us :(

Yup. I just made this comment too. A drone with an IR camera (good for day or night). The money these boats cost, this life saving equipment is an easy purchase.
How about wéaring some kind of personal EPIRB when on deck.

l've done my share of ocean sailing, but never on any RTW race. l have several friends who did back when it was the Whitbread, aka "Witless" Ocean Race. The speeds these crews and boats achieve and the conditions they encounter and overcome are almost impossible to imagine, even for people like myself. Very impressive.

after I have been watching for a good wild now my opinion is that every team member should have a light on their suite the light should come on if they should fell into the water plz or there suit should be able to keep them afloat

so many unnecessary lives are being lost.. better buoyancy and tracking systems for all members of the crew should be mandated to help assist find and recover any person overboard..... These people are all Champions at the finish line doesnt matter who comes in first

You guys should have water proof strobe lights on your person just incase Someone falls over! Especially at night!
and a beakon signal which can be found by a device in the boat and some airbag system like on mtorcycles these days which is small while wearing normall but inflates when outside the perimeter of the boat and in water or something

I enjoyed the video and following the race. A couple of questions come to mind. Why do the sailors not wear life jackets in rough seas? Isn't there some sort of 'man overboard' beacon that can be clipped onto their clothing when they're on deck?
I believe they don't always wear life jackets as the amount of water that's washing onto the boats would mean they would constantly be setting off automatically.
On yachts as you may know there is a MOB button on the gps equipment that you can press as soon as you can once you hear a person has gone overboard. You can then try and pinpoint onto that location. Problem with a MOB beacon clipped on would be how would it be set off? If automatically, the constant stream of water would set it off. If manual, you'd want it easy enough so that you could set it off if you fall in, but not so easy that you may accidentally set it off. This might be a hard balance to find!
I agree with Jim, just wanted to add my 2 cents. Why in the hell do they not use 2 tethers in the southern ocean. If you must change anchor points you'll still be clipped in. People do this all the time on land while being hundreds of feet off the ground. A few extra seconds would've saved a life.
@@ryanwhisenant2150 It's such an intense race, Im sure everyone would ditch them the second they weren't controlled. On a yacht you have to move a lot and there's so much going on, the clip system is really inconvenient for that. Plus if the yacht went over you could get trapped easily and drown. GPS trackers would be pretty much the only option but they aren't that easy to use as you see in movies, the location isn't that accurate, especially in far of regions like the southern ocean
@@ronnnie663 I read some turned off their AIS locating devices for that reason - the water made them keep going off. And supposedly they ship locator was broken. Tragic.
The boat's AIS antenna was damaged so even if Fisher had been wearing an AIS locator, the boat couldn't pick it up.
One lucky man.

Small drones with IR cameras could have saved Fisher. You have a MOB, mark the spot, turn the vessel, launch the drone. If you are on a yacht that costs as much as these, we can buy the available tech to prevent this from happening again. RIP.

@@DuffyNightingalein the last 2 years I have been able to experience some awesome sailing trips in dangerous places and wether conditions. ya I would be scared and yes I would be screaming in fair. That's why I have chosen to not wear a life jacket so I have less time to suffer
@@GuusGeluk-hz4tn The life jacket isn’t the issues. It’s hypothermia. None of these sailors wear immersion suits (understandably so). An immersion suit would have given more time for Fisher, not a life jacket. Also, new tech like drones could have helped save his life.

Being able to compete in this race is my goal as a sailor but after this I might reconsider

Why are the guys not wearing Epirp at all times?
Don’t take this wrong as I have nothing but total respect for these sailors. Well, my comments have nothing to do with the sailors actions, but that of people in charge of how the money for boats, equipment, etc. is allocated. Please buy these sailors self inflating life jackets. Maybe they refuse to wear life jackets. At least offer them. Also a strobe light, whistle, and those locator beacons that can be accessed by boat crew on a computer. Jesus crew of Scallywags were wearing black tops and shorts. Oh, and skin. It’s a miracle they spotted that guy in the water. I can see a big storm in a pitch black night, it probably is impossible. My heart to John Fisher’s family and friends.
Not only self-inflating life-jackets, but one, which deploys a orange red balloon about 30 feet high, so one can spot the location! There is much to be said about safety, and how good that equipment needs to be. John Fischer did not have to die...
Why don't they have personal ais trackers for man overboard situations? Crossed the atlantic with some mates and we fitted them inside our vests incase we would fall over.
They could were a personal EPIRB attached to their life vest.
But I was also astonished to see that they don't even wear vests in my situations. Like the first guy that went over board...
yes, I was surprised to see that. having an EPIRP on your wrist should be a requirement at a minimum.
who makes these boats and can they be bought privately, individually?
they are pretty much Open70's. you can buy them, but why would you? These are like F1 cars. not any old sailor can sail them
costs a ton of money to dock this long boat in a harbor.
I hope someone can enlighten me on this but why do they not have ships following them at a relatively close distance capable of fast rescue if an accident did occur? I can easily see how it would be logically and logistically possible. I also know it wouldn't guarantee a successful rescue but it would surely increase the chances of one.

Several reasons. Not a lot of ships can maintain 25kts in heavy seas like these boats. You are risking a ship full of people in very dangerous conditions. If you did find a boat that can handle heavy seas at that speed then the cost would be outrageous.

okay I have the next idea so that the crew and the captain don't get lost at sea you guys could build a suit that has a ( GPS ) tracker in it so that if anyone would get lost at sea you can track them okay that is my opinion or a wrist band it can save a life

Few bucks compact waterproof device showings position of lost dog or stolen bike, you can buy now from Amazon. On my small 30 footer, every one who stepped out of cockpit in bad weather, had a $20 orange smoke flare and $80 tiny light in pocket.

Answering myself: The number of sailors allowed in an all-male crew has been reduced from eight to seven, but a team may take up to two female sailors, to make a total of nine. Skippers can take 10 sailors if the team consists of an even male/female split, and an all-female team may take 11 crew members.
The difference between male and female in sailing isn't the same as other sports. It's pretty even unless weight is a factor. Sometimes the women have the advantage being lighter on average.

I am curious if the fisher boat carried any light. If it did not, the fishermen recklessly endangered their own life and that of others on the sea.

@@BlueSky_BlueSky it is quite common to come across fishing boats in the South China Sea fishing illegally who therefore do not display navigation lights, and do not have AIS. I would be surprised if these race boats did not use the latest radar tech; so they should be able to see other vessels in their vicinity. They are moving very fast though so it must be difficult to manage.
It is strange to see such weather and people not wearing harnesses and personal EPIRB, it’s an accident waiting to happen.

Agreed. To me the loss of the fisherman is far worse than the loss of the sailor. Those race participants know the risk from the start and accept it to try to gain fame in a rich mans game. The fisherman was out there just trying to make a living and feed his family. I would hope the remaining fisherman were reimbursed for the loss of their boat by the Volvo ocean race as otherwise they have lost not only a friend but also their livelihood, and also that the family of the lost fisherman were compensated for the loss of their loved one.

@@TrancerUK Yes they do but it can not be that simple. If the fishing crew was pulling in a net being stationary then they were not at fault. If conditions were bad and neither ship were using communications then they are both at fault. I don't know what happened but either way a loss of life is nothing easy to get around and in my opinion, regardless of fault, I hope that the racing sponsor offered help to the fishermen as they would definitely need it more than a major company.
