- Google CEO Sundar Pichai faces questions on transparency and accountability today from the House Judiciary Committee.
Pichai agreed to the hearing amid Republican concerns that Google is biased against conservatives, although Google has denied those claims.
The tech executive is poised to face tough questions from members of the committee, particularly on privacy concerns related to its Google Plus service, which is being shut down, and allegations that the search engine suppresses conservative voices.

He was just saying "that her grandaughter was playing a kids game and suddenly an Image of Mr King appear with an abusive or absurd language around it" and he meant to reason why and how did it happen. What i felt it was a very pretty bad and terrible framed up question ? This hearing was awful. Judiciary system sucks there

Seeing Trump in search results for "idiot" isn't due to a liberal / progressive bias. It is because the people who called him an idiot are senior politicians and highly influential people. That makes it news and it would take a biased censor to purposely change those results and ignore the public interest and importance of those instances.
It's not nearly that simple. The software algorithms and millions of lines of code involved in producing search results is incredibly complex, has now AI and contains many paths and subroutines reading enormous amounts of data on webpages and more to produce results. And the algorithm is secret ... no one except Google knows what it does, how it does it and how it decides how to present results. It's fine that its secret ... that's Google's intellectual property. But today, Google is so pervasive and persuasive that it is now and will be a concern.
@@beaconterraoneonline My point was that finding Trump when searching the word "idiot" is the least surprising result, given the number of high-level important references that correlate both terms.
Yes ! Exactly !
@@beaconterraoneonline I think mostly the point is that the result is on account of attributes Google uses as factors in its ranking algorithms. It's not due to some pre-programmed, explicit political bias, but perhaps it's simply said often enough to become highly relevant. Or perhaps liberals are better than conservatives at SEO. Who knows.

And what does that highly intelligent individual says at 45:50'? He says:
"We undertook a very thorough investigation, and, in 2016, we now know that there were two main ad accounts linked to Russia which advertised on Google for about $4,700 in advertising."
$4,700, that's it.
That's the reason why the Democrats are still trying to find some evidence of "Russian collusion" or interference is to explain how Hillary Clinton had lost the election.
She had to explain to a lot of rich and powerful people who were very angry at her, who gave her a lot of money, she made a lot of promises that she was going to win.

OMG 1:37:00 Mr Poe... The dude is so ignorant. Why is it the most ignorant are always the loudest.
Should have just said "if you open google maps, then yes."
I wish the CEO was a little quicker on his feet, but I'm sure it was incredibly nervewracking, but anyways I wish he could have just said "It's not a yes or no question, there are many variables and you don't seem to have an understanding on how the technology works but I'll gladly walk you through it if you stop cutting me off"
Poe is a ho fo sho. Some dumb part of Houston should be ashamed to vote for an embarassment like him.
He was trying to making a decent point on privacy though, credit for that.
That's what I thought about Jim Jordan
These questions should be asked by people in the industry, not politicians who don't understand the very foundation of google technology.
We need politicians who are from the industry.
But it's clear Google has a left wing bias that's all that matters
This is a problem with democracy. You put too much power in hands of people whose only qualification is that "people elected them" while no one knows how qualified they actually are to be making decisions. Sometimes we even elect Donald Trump.
Yeah I know right, the need for important and relevant nuance in his answers is very absent. A geek would be much better suited to get better answers, political grandstanding wasting time again.
People from Industry are part of same Industry.. Why would they even dare to ask any question against their own industry ? Lol ..
Anyone else facepalm when King suggested Google publish their search algorithm? That stuff isn't public because it can be exploited if it's revealed. I'm not saying they should know everything about the tech world, but congresspeople need to have their questions and planned discussion points reviewed by competent industry professionals for hearings like this, so the stupid questions don't get asked.
I'm a computer guy, and I must say, that is only a stupid suggestion as it is unlikely that Google would ever follow through with it. I think history often surprises us: from survival and legal perspective, such an action may in fact save Google from a painful anti-trust lawsuit that could potentially fracture their company into several pieces. Of course, there are big downsides from releasing such information too; however, my point is, you should not expect everything to go smoothly, or assume Google's dominance will go unchallenged in perpetuity. Often studying historical Chess matches, reveal moves that weren't so obvious, but should of been done. If I had to bet, (if I had to), I would think there is a 50 percent chance of utter tragedy striking the company within 10 years.
There are some old dinosaurs in Congress that look like complete morons
Yes, because open source software is sooooooo much more susceptible to exploits...
I never said they should publish their algorithms, only that it 'may' not be a mistake. Also, use your brain: if such algorithms were made public, how long do you think it would be until somebody would suggest a patch? As long as it was a controlled release, I don't think there would be too much problem. The real danger and exploit here is that various groups would begin to suggest edits in a partisan manner, rather than being strictly technical in nature.
@@nikolaus2688 That's not my point at all. Why do you think we don't have this info? Search results could be manipulated maliciously if people knew exactly what to do to get their sites higher on SERPs. It's not the same as, say, some downloaded software or Linux distro where your computer is the only thing at play. It's the same reason we don't know exactly what constitutes a view on UA-cam, or rather how the system distinguishes a real person watching a video to a bot. If that information was public knowledge, everyone would know how to get around it and bots would be everywhere.

Its a difficult job for Pichai. Most members are technically illiterate. 😂😂😂
He must be thinking that he would do better by teaching 10 year old kids than these PPL
I'll bet they understand anti-trust. Break them up!!!
It's weird to say "poor guy" about Google CEO, but seriously, I feel so sorry for Sundar Pichai, it's like he having to explain how programming works to a caveman. I am not saying there is everything perfect with google products, of course there might be bugs time to time, regarding privacy of your data. Guess what? If you are not willing to take that risk, keep your damn data in private, don't use mobile phones and don't use internet at all. Everyone wants to use their products (more often for free) and are complaining.
Every citizen deserves access to internet without being forced to use google. I pay quite a bit monthly for home internet and phone data. Google is a "free" spy service built in to everyone's services. It is a LIE to say you can ever turn Google services off or opt out.
ggl let them spy it makes their services better 👌🏼
If you were not leaving a comment I would swear you have never used a computer. There are other search engines than Google. No one is making you use google.

You omit either republican or technologically from this sentence and either statement would be true.
What has that got to do with Google having a left wing bias!!
then maybe we have too much technology
I don't understand the logic here. Protect the second amendment but question the FIRST amendment as much as you can ? Mr. Lieu was so right and clear - if you want have good search results and do good work, it is as easy as that.
And some of the questions are just so dumb, for example tracking google thing, I mean you can grab a 16 year old off the street in a third world country and even he can tell you that it is NOT a yes or no question.
Do Lieu and his buddies get to say what's good and what isn't? Don't let this fake sympathy and show of "humanity" fool you. Once they have the power to censor under the guise of "just be good... K" soon you will have an internet that only democrats and their legion WANT you to see. If that doesn't scare you then you're hopeless.
@@Thelastdan This is even true for the Republicans. Both the parties want you to see their own agenda on the internet. By the way no one is moving forward to censor the content on the internet other than the Republicans. Americans need to decide better which candidates do they want to run for Presidents. The last election saw candidates both of whom would prove to be some kind of blunder and now it is being proved on the daily basis.
Not everything is Conservatives vs Liberals, most of the times it is just common sense. By the way, America lacks a real liberal party, both Democrats and Republicans are right wingers with Republicans to the extreme according to the world standards.
Please explain…sounds liked you are on to something
