I don't even play guitar. Well I own one but Michael's stuff is way above my head. But I come here for the new music. Amongst others I have discovered Ween and this lady. Love this channel
Oh my! I just saw this video and I’m late but I’m glad to see a Halifax girl on your show! How cool is that? Her work with Joel Plaskett is tops too. In fact, you should really check out our Joel sometime. Great guy and great songwriter. Cheers!
Michael, brother. This song’s message and your enhancement of it resonates with me so much. I am brought to tears by thoughts of all of the times throughout my life that I wasn’t so kind to myself. Because of this song, I am going to try to cut myself some more slack. Thank you and thank you Rose Cousins for this masterful piece.
“Hey..do you go to church?” - “Yeah” - “Where do you go if you don’t mind me asking”. “A special place called Guitar Gate” “Really! - Who’s the Pastor” “His name is Brother Michael”. Super inspiring and real! Thank You So Much Michael. And yes, incredible song!
The self-loathing is real. I genuinely thank you, Michael. This one hit me particularly hard tonight. Been struggling with the doubt and the dreaded, “aware of being aware” theme which you beautifully reasoned through. Knowing exactly what you need to do to make changes, over-analyzing, and still not being decisive. Then blaming yourself for being a fraud. Sometimes though, a simple connection through a song and a personal interpretation can be an affirmation. And your insight and spirit came through for me at just the right time.
So, I restarted this video six times at 6:06 before I let it play through. And still, I was excited when I discovered that Michael also had to listen again. This song simultaneously haunts and inspires me. I just can't stop listening to it.
great reaction. i saw her in an acoustic-only show at a tiny venue in seattle. it was magical. if you need a good cry, listen to rose cousins. it felt great to pitch in to her kickstarter for her latest record.
Oh wow!! Great, great song! Thank you....goosebumps and your breakdown of the lyrical conversation was fantastic. I'm a veteran with PTSD and "Riser" is one of my all time favorites. Rose's "Chosen" found me when I needed it. Thank you, thank you!
I am so glad you recognized her talent. I was introduced to her at Club Passim in Cambridge, MA a few years ago at their wonderful annual Undercover Covers concert. She was incredible!
This was a message for me today. I'm going through some rough times and decided today I have to sell my electric guitar that I've had for 45 years. It killed me to get it appraised and all, but this song, this post, helped ease my soul. Selling my guitar makes me feel broken, even though I know I need to it. I'm broken, but I'm chosen.
@@Guitargate Your message means so much: I felt so alone having to sell my guitar: that wasn't just selling a thing, it was the death of a dear old friend whose voice I'll never hear again. Thank you for allowing me to share the grief. This song and your reaction really touched me just at the right time.
Wow, that was amazing! Couple of comments: 1. This is the first time I’ve seen Michael let a song play through completely unbroken. And he does it TWICE! But then again, how could you interrupt her? 2. The lyrics are incredible, but did anyone notice her voice? Stunningly beautiful! 3. Could you imagine trying to cover this song? It would be impossible. All the offbeat lyrics. And somehow she makes it work, with sustained words and perfect silences. Just amazing.
I can't hear the original track here without hearing you join in at the end. The theme of not being good enough and fear of falling short strikes to my core that you so succinctly addressed here. Thank you for doing what you do. Beyond the guitar, it's all about life. Peace Brother Michael!
I don't play guitar and have no intention of picking it up and yet I chose to come back to your channel time and time again. I love discovering new artists who speak truth, finding old favorites again - thank you for sharing so generously of yourself and your musical expertise, I hope you know how much it is appreciated.
I'm usually always listening to old school thrash metal with my mind racing all over the place. Listening to this was really nice to slow down and somehow take a mental break and feel some emotions im usually doing everything to avoid. Hearing your words felt very needed, thank you.
This one proves again what music can be. It's great musicianship and arrangements and talent. And then sometimes it's a bunch more. It's poetry and it's a message and it's a balm. Thanks for this one - I have been listening to Rose for a few years now. Joni resonates throughout this.
Your body language tells a huge tale in itself Michael. Your hand slightly shaking from pure emotion. Your glances off camera…into the camera. Your breathing and exhaling. You embody so much love, gratitude and inspiration. You go from Dave Mustane to Justin TimberLake to this. All over the map. Many of us vibrate like this…like you. You my friend, are musics answer to Ted Russo. -John from Vancouver 🤘🏻😝🇨🇦
So awesome to experience your reaction to this amazing singer/songwriter and her amazing insights into the human condition. I thoroughly enjoyed it! I am off to explore more Rose Cousins on UA-cam. Thank you so much for introducing me to her🎸
I'm not a good guitarist, but this is a good place to come for the occasional philosophy lesson. Good song, but the commentary is valuable, too. Nicely done, Michael.
I connect. I found it haunting. Even appropriate …Amy Winehouse looking at me from over his shoulder from the start of his breaking down the lyrics? Woke my inner spirit at 11:20 in. Michaels message and more importantly- Choice of words. Pierced beautifully right through my armor. Amazing.
Just found your channel, what a great time to be alive. Watching this and the video about playing melodies was so inspiring, from the bottom of my heart thank you.
Thanks for this absolute gem of a song, you’re channel is brilliant feeding ground to find my musical highs, love your perspective and analysis, my admiration and respect to your ear and your appreciation to the artists.
Thank you so much Mr Michael for stepping into the deep end of the pool. Meaning, you spoke to us all about the real heart and soul of music, which is so much more than theory. While important as the alphabet to music, it is there only to get us to exactly what you shared in this session. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Another great example of how you consistently use your platform to promote new and/or lesser known musicians. People that say today's music "sucks" need to watch your channel. Thank you for this!
Thank you as always. 💕. As an artist I have a vision I want to create. Call it Art A. After the paint and paper and ink have had their input I am gifted with a piece, Art B. If someone says they like Art B, I can thank them and appreciate that work. Or, as I see all the time, I can explain in detail why it is not as *good* as Art A. Today you are there for me. 💕🙋🎶🎨

For Travis and Rose and all of the millions of ears tired of the relentless pounding of politics and marketing, keep on bringing the redemption of music and your reactions to this space. You bring ambrosia to the soul. Thank you.
Rose's ability in this track to articulate the thoughts I've struggled to write is just amazing. I feel like taking this to my therapist and saying this, this is how I feel. Now I can have an honest talk with my insecurity.

Yes the lyrics really resonate with my faith/spiritual war and journey especially over the last couple of years.

Great video, my man. Nuff said.
Thank You….
that was freakin super, man. lovely
Got me. In. The. Feels.
WOW. I haven't heard a voice as pure as that since Karen...
Has anyone worked out what tuning she's playing in? It sounds like a regular low-E string, but standard tuning doesn't sound right. I also tried with open E and Em but that didn't sound right either.
I think it is a drop D tuning with a capo on the 3rd fret. She uses that tuning on Freedom iirc.
I think I got it and I was wrong. It's standard tuning and she's just alternating between a Gsus2 and Gsus4 (relative to the capo) and hitting the bottom 3 strings in that strumming pattern. I don't know why I had such a hard time hearing that. So simple and just shows how the vocal melody really helps make the tune so powerful.
At 5:29 is the moment I think Michael is so lost in the music he forgets he's doing a UA-cam video! 😂
Love to see it
