LYRICS
it’s a breakneck Monday morning
and I can take it slow
pour cream into my coffee, fresh from off the stove
I replay my favourite saddest song to remember how it goes
or pick up where I left off with last night’s episode
if you’re interested, I can tell you more
of the benefits of being alone
each day I work a little bit on plans of my own
I book flights to places I have always wanted to go
listening to records, monophonic stereo
crawl into bed and check for unread messages on my phone
if you’re curious, I can give you a guided tour
of the benefits of being alone
if I don’t end up with anyone
could be six days to find my body gone but
think of all the space I get to roam
don’t you worry about me, in all my solo reverie
the only one who’s there when I get home
to all the benefits
the benefits of being alone
broken conversation as you get the kids ready to go
we’ll talk about the girls weekend we constantly postpone
I envy how you’re steady and you envy how I roll
and how brave I am to sing about it on a microphone
no matter baby, that’s what makes the show
the benefits of being alone
don’t you worry about me, in all my solo reverie
I decide where everything will go
then I return to everything just so
the only one who’s there when I get home
to all the benefits
all the benefits
the benefits of being alone

This is a masterclass in songwriting. I heard this on the radio and couldn't believe that such [seemingly] "normal, everyday language" had such beautiful flow with the melody, and so interesting and captivating. I'm blown away.
thank you so much!
@@rosecousins No, thank you for such determination to put out such fantastic music even when the "industry" doesn't seem to want to reward you as handsomely as you deserve -- yet ;-)
... The thing that blows me away about this song is that it feels like something any one of us could have written in our journal, or the words that an amatuer songwriter would write that would sound terribly cheesy when actually put to music -- but somehow you make it work brilliantly.
P.S. I get a 'Beatles' vibe. I'd love to hear a Sgt. Peppers version of this if you find a way ;-)
Thats true tho. It almost feels like a musical song with how smoothly it flows
Not sure if she's into Sarah Harmer or not, but this reminds me so much of Sarah.
This song should become a timeless classic; it has a catchy, hummable and memorable melody and comfortable tempo. The arrangement is terrific and subject matter most can relate to. As a musician it was also a joy to hear real 'horns' !
Since I heard it on CBC it's been in my mind's ear so much that I had to look it up on UA-cam.
Thanks for restoring some faith in modern song writing and performance.
About time somebody made a tune that doesn't sell the fact that you need to be paired up with somebody to be happy.
I can’t get over this song. It has struck a chord.
There aren’t words to describe how much I love this song.
A ballad both positive and sad for all of us who have never found someone to share the journey with. Thanks for making this song.
"Could be six days to find my body gone" 😂. Love this song! Great vid!
Brilliant ... Rose makes Prince Edward Island proud!
Besides how amazing this song is, the two best things about this video are her putting her night guard in her mouth (I can relate) and the portrait of Stevie Nicks! So glad I discovered Rose's music.
3. The dog. ❤
Love the haloed images of Patti Smith, Madonna, David Bowie, and Stevie Nicks but I can’t make out who that is on the laptop at about 0:24. Prince?
Great Message for those who are mostly alone...and get used to 'alone-ness...but nevertheless are still sometimes a bit lonely...but maybe that is part of the human condition...
Heard this on CBC today! Instantly captivated!
Also particularly relevant at this time! Hope you're listening to the benefits of being alone! And stay safe!
I spot a Tim Baker record! It's no surprise that my favourite Canadian songwriters listen to one another :)
Such a talent!! Rose Cousins sounds even better live!!!!!
Very late to this but I heard it on CBC today during a tiring shift at work, and it instantly reminded me of my mom. She's a very strong person and has been single most of her life including now. I sent her this song tonight after I got home and she was really happy to hear it.
P.S. This is such a great song.
I LOVE this song and really love the creativity behind the video!
What an artist you are! I played with one for over twenty years, my late boss - Ms. Etta James.

AGREED!!
I would love to like this video a thousand times
Oh my goodness...This is incredibly awesome. Love it!!!!!
All of these examples of solo life are extremely relatable! A clever satire on a musicians self-induced isolation, with a positive spin. So catchy! Love you and your songwriting Rose, thanks for doing what you do. #melodystangmusic
What a perfect song in every way. Heard it recently on a Saturday morning on CBC and haven't been able to forget it. Most songs lose some magic after you've listened to them a hundred times...not this one.
Hi Rose, long time Radio 2 listener, you were the instrumental (no pun intended) in my break-up and my recovery. St john's resident who hopes I'll see you in concert someday. Beyond that, thanks for everything, and writing the anthem for the benefits and reality of being alone.
Love this, brilliant! You are such a fun loving woman with such an amazing heart and soul! Never alone #youarechosen
I love you Rose Cousins. :)
City living anthem.
amen
@@rosecousins ✌️

a wide eyed smile of delight... so darn catchy, clever and inspiring!
I'm going through a difficult spot in my relationship right now, and thing song helped me realize no matter what, it's gonna be okay. Thank you creating this. Sending good vibes from Newfoundland.
vibes back
I'm not gonna lie, I cry to this song.
I love this SO MUCH. Amazing!
terrific! keep 'em coming, Rose! your funny melancholy brilliance always comes through ☺️
Rose &Jonny, I couldn’t place this song when I first heard it. Was it new? Was it old? But it didn’t matter. It’s timeless and superb. Congratulations! Don’t stop writing.

YOU ARE A GENIUS!

this is awesome! Congrats Rose and Shehab on a wonderful video.
Loved your music and humor ever since seeing you open for mcc in WI. This is great!!
I really really really really really really love it!
This is simply beautiful. Such a wonderful beat, message, and voice. 😍
I love this!
I spy a Villages LP! ❤
Jeez, Rose. This has got to be the most underrated song of 2019.... sigh. You are a true artist. Seen you live a couple of times and would go to great trouble to do it again! :)
My song for sure!! Love it!!
You are a queen!x
I love this song so much! 🍀
Fantastic song, fantastic video and a lovely mesmerizing voice.
Do you have any t-shirts available can't seem to find anything on your website.. First heard you perform opening for MCC and the music was great and your sense of humor wonderful. Love this song. Both versions.
I just put them up in the last two days! rosecousins.bandcamp.com/merch
@@rosecousins Thank you. I think I'll get a t-shirt and a poster. Always should have a place in our heart for a dog.
I love this album 😍
Hi Rose! Just heard you on the CBC! Good luck at the ECMAs!
bravo!!!!!! this song just became my love at 1st sight. I love it.it is a very underrated, it's very creative and nice voice, one of the best.my heart is warmed.thank you!!!!
What an astonishingly beautiful song, just perfect. So well written
So sweet and funny. I hope you meant it to be.
I'd love to hear the inspiration behind this song! I'm working on a doc on self-marriage and this fits perfectly with the themes we are exploring. I'm going to share this on our FB page, The Day I Said "I Do" to Myself 😊
Oh my gosh, this is great. ❤ I want to know what all the albums are... I think the first one is Fortunate Ones, and the last mmmmmmmaybe Blue?
Jenn Grant, Don Brownrigg, Villages, Tim Baker, Charlotte Cornfield!
oh and Fortunate Ones
Does anyone know if there's an instrumental version available?
I understand that the song is highlighting the idea of being independent and, perhaps I am reading too much into the video, but I am wondering if the ending hints at a bit of loneliness. At the end, when Rose comes off of the treadmill, it is silent and she kind of looks around a few times (as if to look to see if anyone is waiting around after the video had been finished being made).
The Reprise version of this track on the album (more stripped back and sombre) hints at this as well
Not bad, not bad at all
But, . . .she's not alone. There's so many people around her. ;)
I know that I couldn't have been in a better place for Tomorrow, Mik..... :-D
Sometimes, is never a bad time, 2get 2 know yourself a little better.... :< 3
This should be the theme song of Covid - 19
Great song and a fantastic singer. However the video is limited due to the cheap production value.
Shoot a videos and work out on a tread mill. Excellent multi-tasking. (-:
