Thank you! This is the nicest way I've ever seen someone comment or critique on YT. I know that this is not the MOST advanced tapping there is, however it is advanced for most players who are used to Halen or Hammet types of tapping... and certainly not a 1st lesson. I have taught for over 20 years to know this.
Thank you for a nice lesson. The riff itself is nice enough, but I really like it for the ideas it put into my head about how to start tapping in new ways I hadn't thought of myself.
It's all relative. For guys born with a guitar in their hands and world renowned skills like you, this is child's play for sure. For most rock guitarist with a few years of experience, one might be challenged with this at first.
the second tapping technique with the minor scale (mixolydian is a ridiculous term personally) is probably the most useful as it provides you the ability to use all the notes, which gives opportunities to piece together a lot of different and interesting things. Vai uses this technique a lot in his tapping.
That is awesome.I have only ever tapped like in the song Grim Reapers see you in hell song.I always did the Nick Bocot way. That was awesome getting to see a new twist.I am totally getting into your videos.Thank you for sharing your talent with me.You Rock.Have a great night and I will be checking out more of your videos.God bless you and your family.
@rouby44 use both hands at different times to mute... probably more with the right hand. For instance, while you tap on the 2nd string, cover the other stings with your right palm and also touch the 3rd string with the tips of your left fingers (not to fret, but to keep that sting quiet.)
This is a cool video, If only I wasn't so stubborn about sticking to late 60's early 70's style I would finger tap but thanks for time to teach people this stuff.
some of these comments are a little loose.... geez, you'd think some people would show a little respect and appreciation...... nice work man.........from a fellow player...
I mean, it works it's just not pure pentatonic on the right hand. Tony MacAlpine does a similar thing at the end of one of his tunes. Forget the name tho. My fingers aren't made for that 8 fingered stuff tho. I mostly just play "normal" stuff.
Key of C major: C ionian, D dorian, E phrigian, F, Lydian, G mixolydian, A aeolian, B locrian. They are essentially the sam with the same 7 natural notes. Modes change based on the accomanyment. Notice the patteren with my left hand and that is a G mix, I do however end on an "A"...
I was only talking about the left hand. But I appreciate your wisdom on this. ALL licks ARE and SHOULD be tweaked and messed with for your own tastes...experiment y'all. Try tapping non-scale tones like the 11th and 9th frets, a good way to get fired from your country club gig.
I just watched a few of Kiko's videos. I had never heard of him b4. Very nice, and quite a different style that what I demo here. His tapping reminds of Satch's early stuff. Nobody "owns" anyone else, but I know that kids like to make everything a contest...
@skiingguitarist yeah, I've seen similar comments about the notes outside of the pentatonic and about the mixolydian. I am just referring to the left hand of course. The are too many variables, so, as with all, experiment.
Hey: Nice lesson. I jammed with you once at the Ringside at some benefit where Billy... can't remember the last name, but he was your student...was playing.
@MrRivethead I did like my Parker but I let it go. It played well but I never really liked the Dimarzio pickups. I would have put Seymore Duncans in it, but it's a hassle. I never liked the body style either, but loved that it weighed almost nothing and the peizo pickup was killer.
Nice format and very informative. Precise and articulate lesson. I feel like I saved myself 40 bucks on a lesson. Forget the nay sayers man, keep posting good stuff cause you got a fan here. Peace
I remember seeing your band Arazmo at Biarritz on 19 maybe 20 years ago or so! You were doing Van Halen covers and originals then. A friend of mine John Migliorisi used to go to Meyer Baba meetings at your mom's I think.
i typed in advanced guitar tutorial and found your video...and I wanted you to tab "Need to Love" (the acoustic version) both guitar parts for me!!!! I REALLY need to know how to play it.
Because it's cool, makes harmony, which is very important if not essential for a music, it's the end touch, if without the vibrato, wouldn't sound so good.
Nice demo and playing, I'm kind of new to tapping but really interested. Can you tell me why you tune down a half step? Nice guitar, I have a Parker too and they play like a dream!
he is playing the A minor pentatonic with his left hand...but the notes he's hitting with his right hand are in the A natural minor scale, which is the pentatonic with 2 extra notes
You know, I usually keep the right hand "in key" meaning, you can't just tap 10 and 12. You have to tap the notes in THAT mode of the pentatonic scale you're in. So, Am would be 12, 10, 13, 10, 12, 9, 12, 10, 12, 10, 12, 10. But all 12/10 is close but the 10 on the G string (F note) is just not gonna work since your left hand is pure Pentatonic (no F). But, I give 4 stars anyway.
Different people do it different ways. I hammer straight on and then straight off, maybe slightly downward. I've heard Joe Satriani pulls up a little when tapping, and Kirk Hammett pushes down a little when tapping. But that's just what I hear.
Thanx a lot dude ,u explained it pretty well even though my guitar wasnt tuned exactly like yours i did that lil tapping technique with the A minor pentatonic scale tapping da 12th & 10th frets & t'was "sweet" ,ive never really focused on the tapping aspect of playing guitar am a self taught guitarist but there r so many things i cant figure out 4myself , this tapping scale was awesome am very greatful your a very good teach, however please refrain from pickin your nose the next time lol
Hey,man it is good lesson! And for those suckers, who can´t play, who no nothing about guitars I could say - just sit there and envy!!!!Man,you don´t have to reply on stupid antimusical responces - those are people, who NEVER be a musician, but a waiter in the club, where we play and get more cash for 3 hours of work, than they could get for couple of days!!! Good job, keep your work, man!
You're tapping hand hits an f note on the g string on the first lick.. Would it still be pentatonic minor if I tapped F# or E note on 3rd string, Would the name change of the scale? Or stay the same? Those notes over A pentatonic trip me out? The only time i use an F note is over a rainbow in the dark type of chord rhythm, or stairway to heaven, Actually I use it a lot ..Good lesson..
Sure it does, because we're in C major / A minor. If you (I) play an F# you'd be in G major / E minor. I'll post a sweep & tap thing soon... Thanks, D.
You'd be surprised at how many bands tune 1/2 and even a whole step flat. Many do when on tour. Guitarists understand a key as a position as much or more than actual pitch. IE: If the 5th fret is an "A", I will call it that regardless of being tuned down. Smart folks can figure it out from there..
In my day that is called 2 hand tapping. I know what you mean and know about tap harmonics. Here is a tap tip: Just like you can get a harmonic from an open string on frets 12, 9, 7, 5, 4 (4 same as 9) you can also get them exactly the same distance from a fretted note, ie: if you're fingering the 2nd fret, tap (harmonic) frets 14, 11, 9, 7, 6....
is that the tampa guitar school that's like right next to "guitar center" on hillsborough ave? If so, i went there for about a year, and i don't recall seeing you at all.
hey dave, you are a good guitar teacher, I like your style
I love how simple this is but it sounds so amazing when you play it. great job
Thank you! This is the nicest way I've ever seen someone comment or critique on YT. I know that this is not the MOST advanced tapping there is, however it is advanced for most players who are used to Halen or Hammet types of tapping... and certainly not a 1st lesson.
I have taught for over 20 years to know this.
Glad to see you still have excellent chops! thanx for the reply!
PHENOMENAL! Thank You for such a detailed, easy-to-understand tutorial!
you're the best guitar teacher I've found on youtube! thanks for the lesson!
Thank you for a nice lesson. The riff itself is nice enough, but I really like it for the ideas it put into my head about how to start tapping in new ways I hadn't thought of myself.
this sounds awesome and it gave me an idea for a different approach on tapping, thank you sir!
It's all relative. For guys born with a guitar in their hands and world renowned skills like you, this is child's play for sure. For most rock guitarist with a few years of experience, one might be challenged with this at first.
dude your a great teacher, i can already do this and more but still for someone who didnt know this it would be a great lesson
This is my favourite tuning for home recording for the last 2years.
You're my new hero. You must be rich!
People with extreme God-like talent like you are very rare.
Thank you so much for commenting on little old me.
cheers mate, you are a very good teacher, i just pulled off those tapping excercises, you teach very well....
@Arazmo I find myself using this riff all the time now :p I enjoy it a lot.
Excellent lesson Dave, thank you, take care.

Thanks you. I know that and was referring to the scale pattern on the left hand only.
seriously. thank you for this lesson. i'm eternally in you debt.
Agree. Thanks Dave...that was cool!
some of these comments are a little loose....
geez, you'd think some people would show a little respect and appreciation......
nice work man.........from a fellow player...
Good point! It is actually in the key of B Major/ G# min - based on pitch....
well done a nice easy but difficult sounding riff thanks a lot!
Hey nice technique!!
I never thought it's this easy until i found ya!
thx a lot man!!
Loved this lesson! Thanks so much!
nice lesson. concise, cool sounding. thanks!
Nice. Very clear. Thanks, Dave.

Nice format and very informative. Precise and articulate lesson. I feel like I saved myself 40 bucks on a lesson. Forget the nay sayers man, keep posting good stuff cause you got a fan here. Peace

Nice guitar, I have a Parker too and they play like a dream!

It is a Parker Fly Deluxe. A very well made and unique guitar. Great sustain, weighs almost nothing. Made from carbon like a racing bike.
Nice vid great tutorial

Exelent.Thank you, Thank you.
Pretty Savage man
Thanks a million
:D
The tapping reminds me of the old Double Dragon games.
would it be better to use my middle finger for tapping because i use my index but it may be tricky to get more then 1 finger to tap.
nice guitar dood!
great men..nice one
I like it

nice one mate
@PrelimseStudios you da man!
This makes me want to pick up a guitar and learn.
Haha.
cool Guitar
Sure it does, because we're in C major / A minor.
If you (I) play an F# you'd be in G major / E minor.
I'll post a sweep & tap thing soon... Thanks, D.
you're welcome!

i have a question. im playing for about 4months. some say that i am good but i wanna know should i practise this?
you rock
In my day that is called 2 hand tapping. I know what you mean and know about tap harmonics.
Here is a tap tip: Just like you can get a harmonic from an open string on frets 12, 9, 7, 5, 4 (4 same as 9) you can also get them exactly the same distance from a fretted note, ie: if you're fingering the 2nd fret, tap (harmonic) frets 14, 11, 9, 7, 6....
The only thing "flaming" about me is my fingers! Look at some of my other vids. This one is old.
is that the tampa guitar school that's like right next to "guitar center" on hillsborough ave? If so, i went there for about a year, and i don't recall seeing you at all.
You're right! You win a new...... nothing at all. I do tap the "F" it is in the key of C/Am. I am immune from prosecution.
