3:32 Hitler got little detention not because the "government wanted to show how nice they are", just because dissatisfaction among people was common and the judge already saw Hitler in a court case and even sympathised with him, that is why he did not get executed.
Great video, I've read most of this information from William L. Shirer's "Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" but Tom's energy and way of explaining things makes it just as interesting as the first time I learned about it. Looking forward to Part III!
+Stephen Blackwell I didn't even think about that! As for me, I'm going to have to appeal to UA-cam to be able to run ads on this video because it was flagged as not being advertiser friendly. I feel as if I'm navigating into the dark side of UA-cam... and another upcoming project is a lecture on Fascism! lol
I've already gotten a bunch of "WWII justified by German Soldiers" videos, and one "How Germany could have won WWII," though I have been watching some AlternateHistoryHub videos as well.
I absolutely enjoyed your video I appreciate your knowledge on the topic of Nazi Germany. Furthermore, your delineation is flawless and entertaining. I am happy to have found your channel.
Maybe future dictators would use words such as...say...for example...idk...totally random choice of words here: "Drain the swamp" that could also very well be a cry to overthrow the government. Maybe a person like that should also face harsh and unapologetic punishment. But hey, purely hypothetical.
Have to comment that it really wasn't the judge's fault in sentencing Hitler. He gave him the minimum possible sentence, which was 5 years, which could be as little as 6 months with parole. (Apparently the security was so lax he could've just walked out as well, but felt obligated to serve his term to heighten his image of being an 'honorable man') The reason he received that light of a sentence, though, was because he used his defense at the trial as a platform to defend why he attempted the Putsch, and obviously, as Germans who were being devastated by the economic consequences of the Versailles Treaty and just the humiliation of WWI, the jury and judge were almost certainly sympathetic. He also got a significant amount of press coverage for his speeches during trial, and that was one of the key things that vaulted his public image into a place where he could use it to build the party after he got out. It seems like the worst thing the court could do in that situation, and they should have either let him go, or sentenced him to a longer period of time. (Obvious choice given hindsight, but impossible in the moment). If they had found him not guilty, he likely wouldn't have written Mein Kampf, and he would have continued campaigning and trying to grow support, even though the economy was successful, and the reason for the party's rise was after the Black Tuesday. I'd say it's also likely that he would have been less cautious, and that it seems inevitable he'd get in trouble again, or that the brownshirts would, and the party would collapse into obscurity.
Hitler's light punishment was in line other sentences for right wingers in Germany. When looking at politically motivated murders in Germany between 1918 and 1922 we see that approximately 400 took place, 354 of these were carried out by right wingers and 22 by left wingers. Of the 22 left wingers, 17 received harsh sentences, including 10 receiving the death penalty whereas the right wingers escaped any punishment in 326 of the 354 murders. Moreover, the average sentence for a left wing murderer in politically motivated murder was 15 years whereas the average sentence for murderers from the right was 4 months. The Weimar justice system was biased towards the right wing and the ascent of Hitler into power was the devastating result of this bias. My source is a short history of the Weimar Republic by Colin Storer and the page number is 54.
Have you heard of The Weather Underground? I suppose the question is how strongly to react to certain types of insurgency. In fact, the US was built around the concept that governments can often be corrupt and people need a way to protect against the possibility/likelihood.
Forgive me if I'm wrong, is your accent from the southern part of the USA? I'm Indian and I've heard this accent on American TV series, which makes me curious.
3:08 Aren't you supposed to be some sort of historian? How do you think slavery falls? How about feudalism? Yes, sure, let's just pretend that history is finished and that capitalism is our final fate.
The Germans called Canadian soldiers in WW1 storm troopers. Cause we spent a month in the rain in the trenches in France durning the battle of Passiondale
About the prison thing, Hitler supposedly turned the trial into enough of a spectacle that people considered it some sort of entertainment and the story goes either A) "Beguiled the judges" to get a lenient sentence or B) He already had closeted supporters among the court. That's the story, anyway. It wasn't some reverse kafka-esque oversight. Also, the Nazi Party ran into an issue before the 30's, the issue was, the Weimar republic was beginning to turn itself around and gain credibility. They had helped mitigate the horrible situation following the Great War by inviting American investment. Well, what happened at the turn of the 30's? Exactly. All those American investors have to take their money out of the German banks and it rekindles the fresh memories of Germany post-war, helps the Nazis gain more support. Not a lot of folks mention the connection between the Great Depression and the Nazis' rise to power but they really should, because economic collapse always acts as a precedent for radical social change. Even today. Ma dude, you get it!
Hi M.Richey, I like your videos but i have to say that this time you are way out of line. Comparing castro to Hitler and concluding that they are the two most horrible dictators of the 20 th century is a joke.....Castro was a dictator whose only merit was to resist the american empire and 12 american presidents . Choosing castro is being very american and narrow minded. Have you heard of some guys like : staline, tito, pinochet, ceausescu, marcos or pol pot, to name a few, who killed far far far more people than castro. I have to remind you that the list of dictators of the 20th century supported financially and military by the US is very long and not exhaustive : king abdullah saudi arabia, mobutu sese seko zaire, marcos phillipines, teodoro obiang nguema guinea, augusto pinochet chile, idrim deby chad, islam karimov uzbekistan, gurbanguly turkmenistan, hosni mubarak egypt, abdullah II jordan, saddam hussein iraq, ceausescu romania, afghan thalibans led by osama ben laden in the war against soviets, adolf hitler (source : wall street and the rise oh hitler by A. Sutton). in the 30's : hitler's biggest ennemy : communists, america's biggest ennemy : communists.
Dictators who were supported by US businesses were very different from those who are supported by the government and I'd like to remind you in many cases the CIA does what it pleases and sometimes without the consent of the US president.
Ye who cares about the countless innocent people tortured and murdered by Castro in the search of freedom.and who cares about the migrant crisis he caused because people wanted freedom
The Beer Hall Putsch was to overthrow "the government?" Just to be clear, that would be the government of Bavaria. So, you walk in to a speech, you have a conversation for a few hours, and then you leave. And that is supposed to overthrow a government?
Bro, he runs in with his supporters, fires a gun and demands to be put in charge of the government because they are all "weak". He didn't leave till the military and local police forced them out and arrested them. You must've supported all the "tourists" in Jan 6th eh? Where police were killed and beaten as they smashed windows and doors down? Where a mob was chanting hang the vice president? Yeah, those "tourists".
I love your videoes, but i hate it when you butcher the German language. It's pronounced :Gerbles" not Gebbels. I know there's no R in it, but that is the proper pronunciation.
Your vids are informative and well excuted, however in this video you make one essential mistake. The term "Nazi" is historically and linguistically incorrect. The use of, Nazi and "Nazism" for Hitler's "National Socialism" was/is merely a slur, to be compared with "Commy" or "Libtard" etc. It was popularized by German exile Socialists and Communists abroad. From them, it spread into other languages, and eventually was brought back to Germany, after the war.
I thought Nazi is a slur meaning backward peasant it’s true it was brang back from the war you watch any documentary about Nazi from a different country they were called N.S.D.A.P
+Despised&Rejected B.A In the specific context of this discussion, there's not much to disagree with, though if you think the end result of Fidel's revolution was beneficial, we definitely have a disagreement there. I appreciate you supporting my work even if we may disagree on a few points occasionally.

I'm glad you enjoyed the lecture - means a lot when even people who are familiar with the topic enjoy watching a series like this. Part III is up!
These videos are great. I really enjoy the production and pictures. Keep them coming!
I think I enjoy listening to your lectures. Please dont stop doing these.
Watching this after the events on Capitol Hill....Jan 6th, 2021
Watching this Hitler series is going to give me a lot of Hitler video recommendations on my UA-cam. And not all good ones.
+Stephen Blackwell I didn't even think about that! As for me, I'm going to have to appeal to UA-cam to be able to run ads on this video because it was flagged as not being advertiser friendly. I feel as if I'm navigating into the dark side of UA-cam... and another upcoming project is a lecture on Fascism! lol
Tom Richey It's a touchy subject and UA-cam is way too stringent.
I've already gotten a bunch of "WWII justified by German Soldiers" videos, and one "How Germany could have won WWII," though I have been watching some AlternateHistoryHub videos as well.
"Break the Dawes Chains" sounds like a great band name.
I absolutely enjoyed your video I appreciate your knowledge on the topic of Nazi Germany. Furthermore, your delineation is flawless and entertaining. I am happy to have found your channel.
Thanks Jason Bourne
This is so relevant. 01/06/2021 never forget.
Punish them and don't let them out of jail because they'll try again.
11:15 killed me.
Great series!
4 years later, this guy is looking like a psychic
@@tonymp history repeats itself doesn't it?

Weather underground is a weather website. (How I know) I work as a forecaster.
2:26 funny rant
8:37 hammer joke
11:14 who's gonna make this country great again?
2:26 is directly related to 11:14
Forgive me if I'm wrong, is your accent from the southern part of the USA? I'm Indian and I've heard this accent on American TV series, which makes me curious.
Yeah it's southern.
just a question: How did Germany war against France on WWI after they defeated and captured them from the franco-prussiam war?
What's the song in the beginning????
Smh. Could have uploaded it before May 6th...
I agree "Navdeep"
+rebecca sullivan thanks, "Rebecca"

I'm making you my advisor, I assume coffee cups is a reasonable payment?
How can you possibly compare Castro to Hitler? You don't know Cuban history.
In German and Swedish, "oe" is the same as "ö". So it's Gubbels, not Gebbels.
Good to know!
Wait, I thought it was Gerbbels.
3:00 Loll good point :D
About the prison thing, Hitler supposedly turned the trial into enough of a spectacle that people considered it some sort of entertainment and the story goes either

Not to mention the US-ordained dictators like the Shah in Iran...>.>
The comparaison is about two characters who committed treason and the small sentence in both cases. It's not about all the dictators in history
Dictators who were supported by US businesses were very different from those who are supported by the government and I'd like to remind you in many cases the CIA does what it pleases and sometimes without the consent of the US president.
