That 'without firing a shot' is terribly misleading. Political violence and fear from political prosecution was really prevalent in germany, hell that's the reason the S.A. existed. Yes, he did (ab)use the democratic route but even then it wasn't purely democratic and it was supported by other means including regular violence and fear incitment.
if the communists were coming in third, then how can you say "No one sees communists as acceptable"? Obviously many did. Hence so many votes. Surely, more it is more accurate to say with the socialists first, the Nazis (despite the full name, a right wing party) second and then the communists third, then conservative voters and conservative forces would swing behind the Nazis. The Nazis got the support of well to do middle classes and of bankers and other conservatives in the early 30s
Is Imperialism anti-nationalist? The was a nationalist backlash to Alexander the Great's imperialism. There was a nationalist backlash to Napoleon Bonaparte's imperialism. There were several nationalist backlashes to Soviet empire. There seems to be a trend, not just of nationalism rising in the conquered territories... but of the conquering territory toward the annexed territories.
Tom, kind of a suggestion I have. I'm no longer a high school student, but maybe you could make one or two videos on Hitler from 1933-1945 that goes through his time as leader for lack of a better term until Nazi Germany's defeat by the Allied Powers in World War II if somebody wanted a idea for a WWII exam or somethin. Obviously I don't agree with the Nazi ideology, but just a suggestion
Hi again, I was just wondering how much significance you would put on Hitler as an individual in the factors contributing to the rise of the Nazi party? Was it purely external factors such as the Wall Street crash which helped in popularising the Nazis, or was it Hitler's legal approach to gaining power and reorganisation of the party after the failure of the Munich Putsch, which made the Nazis a palatable option for the German electorate?
I would say that the Weimar Republic was a sorrowchild which was never loved by the German ruling class since day one. The german military aristocracy rather wanted it to being replaced by the old monarchy and that things should go back to before world war 1. And the economic elite cared more for their own interests than the survival of democracy and the survival of democracy (for example, instead of tax increases to pay war indemnities to France, they lobbied the government to cut taxes for the richest and pay for all spending with the printinpress instead and cause a hyperinflation that could pay off their loans). And the communists was strong in their self-esteem after the Communist revolution in Russia 1917, so they tried to do a revolution in other countries as well, in the 1920s and 1930s. The only ones wanting to keep the democracy alive was the socialdemocrats and the unions. So when Hitler wanted to destroy democracy few protested out of self-interest and people was feed up with the years filled with lack of order. Furthermore, Hitler was very skilled at intrigues. He had Göring taking over the Prussian police, and secretly Göring replaced all honest policemen with SA thugs, so even before Hitler had taken power far-right groups could get away with murder. So later on Hitler had the ability to threaten people. He also outmanovoured the rightwing parties who co-operated with him. He even killed high members of his own party such as Ernst Röhm and Gregor Strasser to get all power for himself. And the monarchists would be dissapointed, because Hitler didn't want to give away his power.
I was also wondering if you're planning on doing lectures on the GDR and West Germany in the near future? Your lectures are really helping me with revision!
+Hassan E. That's not likely for the near future but I will keep those topics in mind. I plan to do some postwar lectures at some point but have several other topics that I'll tackle before that.
"National Socialism' had a very specific meaning in German politics at the time. The party was expressly against socialism, German elites were well aware of this, they were not the only party to use this terminology, and the idea of 'national' or 'christian' socialism being an anti-Semitic alternative to class conscious socialism was an old one. And he shot rather a lot of people, not least were his own Brownshirts.
God I love IB so much. Seriously CANNOT wait to display my new found knowledge tomorrow, ah, im like SO glad I took IB :') I have NO regrets AT ALL. Aha haha haha...
I have question regarding break the dawes chain. Do you think providing loan to financially struggling country is going to help? because as I see it is just going to make borrower addict to it.And did Germany paid off their war indemnities imposed on her in treaty of versailles?
It conveniently killed all the business leaders that were against the Federal Reserve Act and the Income Tax, who were given special invitation for the maiden voyage.
Since when has a socialist or communist ever been recognized as a "conservative"? Yes, Catholic (religious) parties are conservative, but national socialism is based upon all power to the government principles - - - just the same as the communist (extreme left) party.
+t bone Correct. I do not believe that the National Socialists were conservative. They were assisted by conservative allies, but they were not conservative.
Thanks for your clarification Tom. Everything that you provided was very interesting, educational, enjoyable and pleasantly candid - but that sort of had me stumped.
I still don’t understand. I’m looking for more information on the level of the sovereign individual during that time. It appears Hitler rose by democratic means by persuading the people and leveraging himself against communism at the end of the day. But there’s got to be more to it than that. And that stuff about setting aside the German constitution, that seems insane. I would think people would be looking around thinking, “this can’t bode well.” But I guess the world view would be completely different when you don’t have social-media, etc. It’s difficult to say if all this technology is assisting us in our discernment between good and evil or blinding us to what’s really going on. Maybe not much really has changed.
+Navdeep Kaur Using this logic, I should just shut down my channel since the 2016 exam is over. But I won't because 2017 will be a year of more wins and even greater AP Euro success!
+Hannah Yusuf The Brits actually found this video timely. NEWS FLASH: AP Euro students are not the only people who watch my channel. A third of my views come from outside of the US.
Sorry, did you call the Nazis socialists? Sure, you point out they are anti Marxist. But how - other than the name - were they socialist? Was East Germany democratic? It is in the name. so why not? I kinda lose belief in this lecturer right there
The Nazis/fascists were indeed socialists and on the left. Mussolini and other early founders were in the communist party. Mussolini was the editor for the Italian communist paper Avant. They branched off from the communists because Marx's dream of global revolution of the working class had failed. The fascists wanted to try a new brand of socialism where "nation" was paramount. People don't wanna die for one's own social "class" but you can get people to rally with national pride. Nonetheless, the communists were still far more deadly than the fascists ultimately. Over 100 million dead because of communist ideology in the 20th century.
I... can't even begin to comprehend your comment. Are you seriously not seeing the parallels to the Trump cult and the NSDAP? Because they are so similar it's disturbing. The blaming of a religious group, the far-right conservative ideals, the nationalism, the backlash to a liberal decade, the fear of communism, the demonizing of the other side, the desperate claim of "make america great again" etc... it's literally the same.
many parallels to modern America. I mean obviously very different in a vast amount of ways but you can definitely see parallels if you look objectively.
Mr. Richey, your explanation of "Hard Times" in America does not nearly do justice to how bad things really were. My grandfather, Mr. James Henry Redwine who had been working as a roughneck, drilling for oil(for a man named Halliburton) in north Texas lost his job in 1934 at age 51 (which made him subject to age discrimination, not outlawed at that time) and was not able to find another until 1942 building barracks at Kelley Air force base. My dad told me they lived in storefronts, and he had only beans and cabbage to eat. The unemployment rate was 25% and men rode the rails looking for work, thus giving rise to the idea of the "Hobo." There was no organized system of welfare like there is today, no SNAP, no food stamps. My grandfather was a proud man and would not take assistance, my aunts took in washing to help out and earn some money. A TRULY TERRIBLE TIME!!
I say old boy, your history speech is wrong. It is one part of history that has been talked about written about and had programs made about it then any other part of history U.S. history. U.S. history is selective and the reason it is so is because it doesn't have much history. "History Channel Adolf Hitler" Hitler's suicide Hitler this Hitler that blah blah blah. Vietnam was overlooked because it was such a defeat but Hollywood picked up on it eventually in the 70s but turned it into a drama. The Krauts basically have always wanted power Empire it dates all the way back to Austria before the creation of modern term Germany. Now days it's Russia, who dreams of Empire and waits with bated breath to see the collapse of the United States, which is financially broke and prints money like there is no tomorrow. The European Union is a U.S. government creation to create a market to prop up the U.S.. Trading in dollars purchasing petrol and gas in dollars. And so on you get the picture. Toodle-oo
If you are a professor, it's your job to come up w a better term, unless you want to pound out an analogy of Hitler and Trump, which is ridiculous. It would be refreshing and a badly needed credit to your profession to hear a lecture like this w/o political digs on Trump, no matter how seemingly benign. . Otherwise, good lecture!

You should've mentioned Preußenschlag and the dissolution of the Weimar Republic from the Nationalists and von Papen before Hitler.
Is there a follow up to this lecture depicing everything that happened after 1933?

hey can you do a video about the difference between fascism and communism... I'm kinda confused about them
@goodfella21f sorry that is a terrible definition
@goodfella21f it doesn't change the fact that that is a terrible definition, there's so much more to fascism than that
@goodfella21f the difference still isnt explained very well at all, there is still more, very substantial differences to be pointed out
