Its main issue is that it'll have to go through a lot of approval before adoption, substantially more than traditional methods using electrodes. Putting foreign cells inside the body, let alone the brain, is already a practice that carries a lot of risks, especially if the cells aren't the same as the host's. Potential auto-immune problems, rejection and inflammation issues, increased cancer risks. Also, neural stem cells are known to migrate as well, so it's not guaranteed they'll only be present at the site. And while they say they've used CRISPR to make a killswitch, it's certainly not a guarantee, or at the very least, they'll have to ostensibly prove that it is. Not to mention, CRISPR itself is a whole other can of worms, both legally and in terms of safety. I'd say Neuralink has a safe 10-year run before this tech is let off the leash.

Considering this guy was one of the founders of Neuralink and they are probably the biggest compeditor, interesting there wasnt much mention or comparison of the two technologies, only a mention "Existing Technologies" , which is so broad. I would love to see how these two technologies really compare.

This looks like the beginning of neural enhancing devices, imagine having the lab neurons connect the brain to a calculator, maybe it is possible to let the brain use the calculator on an intuitive level, like a mentat in dune. You just think about a calculation, the brain fires up the lab neurons which in turn controls the calculator. Truely a cyberpunk dream come true. Or better yet, just put a chunk of new neurons into the device, to "expand" the brain. General neurons could help a broken brain in recovery, or specialised, already defined neurons could give the brain entirely new abilities. I have no doubt they are thinking about those possibilities!

In my view, professor Nicolelis has on neural engineering the same impact as professor Geoffrey Hinton has on AI.

Neural engineering is a new field? Maybe if by new we mean in the last 30 years. I majored in Biomedical Engineering with a neural engineering focus in 2013. The major was newer, but the field has been around for a long time.
This is the craziest shit i've seen since i watch a doco on CRISPER like a decade ago.. and this involves CRISPER.. go figure! I really like the forward thinking of; if the person doesn't want it anymore we can take a pill and the connection fades. WOW. Most people don't understand how advanced we are when it comes to not making mistakes anymore. Between just more experience and things like supercomputers for simulations, science is stopping issues before they happen - its incredible!

If a user bangs his head really hard, this device seams a lot more invasive and dangerous than tiny threads (assuming the threads stay in place in the brain and have wiggle room to move). With respect, they need a PR person to come up with branding more recognizable than "Science" and "SciFi". That name (beyond the obvious confusion) doesn't really give the gravitas of how revolutionary their product is. Even something like "Neurolytics" would be better at letting people know what they do.
