- From the blue boxes outside the post office to your mailbox at home, police are battling mail thieves who see the crime as low risk and high reward.
They tried to break open our property's locked mail room a couple weeks ago. We have cameras installed inside the building but a camera doesn't stop a crime in progress.
And with camera's, what will the police do? Nothing! Cameras are useless!

Need to digitize everything. Mailboxes are old and outdated as the other infrastructure in the US.
I live in Vegas, and I had my mailbox broken into in the past. Good thing for me, I pay monthly for a P.O. Box where all of my important documents go.
My home mailbox only gets junk mail. 😂🤷🏾♂️
The post office mandated these neighborhood mailboxes years ago because the postal workers were too lazy to walk door to door anymore so instead we have easy pickings for criminals because itIt’s so easy to break into a bunch of mailboxes on a curb far from front doors. Mail slots on doors are much harder to rob.
The cluster mailboxes were installed because it is easier and faster to load an entire residential block of mail at one point rather than going door to door to door. Saves on time and fuel.
I'm telling you, get rid of those apartment style mailboxes!
I live in the house I grew up in from 81-95.
My parents never had a Mail delivery issue and neither have I.
My mailbox is at the end of my driveway, it's locked.
It also has a bit of personality, we all have different mailboxes around here.
If U.S. post office officials don't CHANGE THE SYSTEMS, they'll never solve the problem. This has been going on for YEARS. Humanity should demand that U.S. mail services should be *far* more secure.
The USPS is working on deploying a replacement to the “arrow key” with an RFID based replacement. It will take a few years to fully deploy the system nationwide.
You have been able to buy copies of these keys online for years. A lot of popular keyed-alike keys are available for sale online for various applications including elevators.
Seems it's time to change the locking system.
The USPS is working on developing and deploying a replacement to the arrow key system. It would use near field communications (nfc) or radio frequency identification (rfid) to allow for a postal worker to securely open a cluster mailbox. In the event they were robbed of their new nfc/rfid key it would be much easier to handle as that key individually could be deactivated. Currently, when a USPS arrow key is stolen, every lock in the postal service area must be subsequently changed.

Get your mail stopped to pick up at the post office. Stop all paper mail.

Start taking Mail Theft serious! Nevada is the only state that does not investigate customers complaints. Only when it happens in Summerlin it gets noticed.

Most of the criminals get the keys, actually willfully from the postal employees. It’s typically always an inside job.

Last month that big blue steel box outside the Post Office Bldg I was pushing my stamped mail my finger got caught with chewing gum sticking on the inside lid of the blue steel box
