Man I just navigated the Los Angeles used car market dodging scammers and grifters at every turn. I was willing to spend 15 grand and I ended up dropping $3400 on the most beautiful low mile car ever. Fuck the craigslist scammers pretending like they’re private party or real dealers. That's what happened with me and my dodge charger that I had. I saw it when I walked on the lot fell head of heels in love and didn't even look it over. Now largely there was nothing wrong with the car it drove great had low miles etc It did have some cosmetic damage however scratches on the side skirt and wheel panel the biggest cosmetic issue with it was that it had a giant hole in the front bumper you wouldn't know it's there from just looking at the car but the closer you got the more you saw it. The car was a rental vehicle before which is why it was low on kilometers and it was only a 2017 I'm pretty sure it ended up in a bush at one point which is why they also got rid of it.
But I still loved the car even though cosmetically it had some issues. God I miss that car still had to get rid of him 2 years ago

easy tips to avoid issues when dealing with marketplace people. if a seller lists a vehicle and already has someone supposedly on the way to buy RED FLAG. if the seller has someone coming and says they will let you buy it out from under them if you offer more than them RED FLAG if the vehicle does not match the pictures and/or description RED FLAG. also rule of thumb for me, never buy videos from sellers who list multiple trucks and are dealers or what i call "unclaimed dealers" who sell multiple vehicles without telling the county they are in that they are dealers. check the seller out on marketplace and see what else they are selling and have sold

I was helping my daughter look at used cars for months. I could not believe the amount of fraudsters and scammers I dealt with. One of the worst was a girl selling her 2006 Subaru with only 150k for $3k…when I arrived at her dad’s house, she wasn’t there. He comes out and starts talking about how great the car was.
I immediately saw the front tires were bald and the passenger side one has steel belt showing. When I popped the hood, I could smell coolant. The dad said it might need the head gasket replaced. I told him that wasn’t mentioned to me when I inquired. The ad said everything ran perfectly. He said his daughter posted the ad, not him.
When I started the car, I could hear knocking. Then I noticed a scan tool plugged in under the dash. The dad saw that and quickly grabbed it from me. I told him the code said the knock sensor was bad. He said he was working on fixing it.
I asked if the ac worked because it was just blowing hot air. He said he hadn’t noticed it not working, but he usually drives with the windows down…in 100*+ temps…all the time. I had heard enough, so I told him I was out and he should correct the ad.
Two day later the girl sends me a message with part of the issues listed but still wanting the same amount. I told her there’s no way she was getting $3k, because the items I knew about was going to be at least $4k to fix at a shop. She called me an a-hole and hung up.
That was 6 months ago and the car is still for sale for $3k.

I'm in Chicago so this issue is much worse since there's an open auto auction 20 mins from the city. People buy shit cars, get it to run enough for you to buy it then that's it. I understand why people just go to dealerships.

But for vehicles that sellers claim to be 'exquisite' they sure do fail to mention damage. Ive sold a few cars on Craigslist and im always upfront about what needs to be replaced, what needs immediate work, what it can use, whats damaged, whats good and any questions they do have im always honest and straight forward.
I can bet you anything those sellers buy vehicles, do absolutely no inspections or repairs. They give the car a good interior/exterior wash and list it up as immaculate. Ive heard stories of people buying good shells but mechanically problematic vehicles more than I care to admit.

I feel like these are easy things to notice. But many people make many mistakes for whatever... reason. If the photos are mismatched.. dont look at it. If the photos look shotty. Dont look at it. If they are hiding a plate dont look at it. If your not gonna look up a carfax because the license plate is hidden or vin. Dont look at it. If your spending any amount of money to look at a vehicle. I always look up the plate or vin using an app called orto vehicle history or license plate and vin lookup- on iphone (which is free) to check service history, odometer history or possible accident history. And then i base that off the price and negotiate from there. If that doesn't work out then its just not meant to be.

I know EXACTLY how you feel!
Back in the late 1990's, my Wife decided she wanted a Suburban and and this "Fine Christian Gentleman" from our Church (Don't get me wrong, I'm also a Christian)said he could find her one (he dealt in Used Vehicles). So I get home from Work one day and there's a 1991 Suburban sitting in my Driveway that he'd dropped off for us to try out. Everything looked Great and so I took it down the road for about 1/4 mile and then came back. She asked me what I thought and I told her that there was something wrong with the Transmission. It didn't "act up" but I could tell by the sound it wasn't right. My Wife claimed I was just "hearing things" because I didn't want to spend the money on it. So we went ahead and bought it....This was on December 14th.
Her Mother lived in Houston (about 120 miles away) and we went to visit her on Christmas Day. The transmission started "Screwing up when we were almost there and we made it to her house and parked it. When we left the next morning, it basically didn't have reverse and when we made it to a town close to our home (my Brother In Law had a Mechanics Shop there), we got off I-45 and turned toward his shop. By this time, all I had was 1st gear....Fortunately, I'd called him up while we were headed there and he'd already opened up a Spot on a lift for me. We got the Suburban up on a lift and I started dropping the Trans. The transmission was absolutely Fried and I ended up getting a New Factory trans that totaled around $2,000.00. This was with us NOT even putting 500 miles on the vehicle.
When my Wife told the "Fine Christian Gentleman about how a Vehicle he'd sold us and "Claimed" to be "in Perfect Condition" had a Bad transmission after only 10 days (remember, I'd told her after only a 1/4 mile test drive that the Transmission had "Issues" and was Bad), all he said was "Well That's Terrible!". He wouldn't even offer to pay for 1/2 of the Transmission Replacement. And He still continued to see us at Church and Greet us as if he'd done Nothing Wrong!
And some People Wonder why being called a "Used Car Salesman" is a BAD thing, LOL!

My dad bought a 1978 450 SLC rust-free, stripped to bare metal. By the time he took delivery it somehow had become a german-only gray-market 350 SLC from 1974 titled as a 1978 450 SLC even though all the numbers came back to the 1974.
What they did was they took his money and then they had something brought over from Germany. It was complete Bondo queen. Rust started popping about 6 months later.

A license dealer here! Im not sure what state youre in but in my state dealers are prohibited from selling vehicles off dealership premises. So if they meet you at a Home Depot, They might be breaking the law! Also it depends on state dealer regulations but in my state there are also laws surrounding advertising vehicles as a dealer. If they did a "Bait and switch" there may be laws which prohibit those sorts of activites. If I were you I would find out their dealer number and report them to the department of revenue in your state. They could quite literally loose their license over something like this.

We live in South Dakota and after a phone call we said we’d be there in 9 hours to buy both trucks if they hold them for us. We get there in 8 hours and when we roll in to the parking lot and walk into the front office their signing paperwork for the 08 f150 to someone else. After we said some words we left that dealer without buying either trucks and happily drove right back home

Took it back to shop that did the work. Owned by same guy. Turns out his fired tech didn’t drop the oil pan and clean. All that extra metal laying in the bottom of the pan.

If you glance at the picture quickly, you’ll also see that one of them had a black Chevy bowtie on the front one did not one of them had like a chrome accents somebody added to the grill, and that one did not and one of them had the crossbars on the roof rack and that one did not, I just noticed of three things right off the bat little on all those big scratches on the front bumper cover on the passenger side that you could not see in the picture but we’re definitely there when you saw it in person. Small town car dealers man trying to make a buck anyway they can, much better off to try to get one from a private person if possible. I know it’s hard but probably do better that way.
