  • You've probably seen online cages that're small, oddly shaped, may be a bit questionable on amazon. But why are they considered bad? Today in this review and educational video, I explain why some amazon cages are inappropriate and what people have mentioned when purchasing them in their own amazon reviews. Let's check them out!

    I feel the same way about ‘starter cages’ as I do about ’starter houses’, why would you move into a temporary space if you don’t have to

    • @xErinxx
      @xErinxx 3 роки тому +49

      People usually have good reasons for starter homes - moving out, investing, etc. But starter cages are flat out inappropriate, because the reasoning I see most is ‘I can’t afford the bigger cage yet.’ THEN WHY DID YOU GET AN ANIMAL if you know you can’t provide it with proper care?!?

    • @catking1059

    • @xErinxx
      @xErinxx 3 роки тому +10

      @@catking1059 that’s fair but I also think you misunderstand why people do that. The housing market, generally speaking, always only increases in value. So if you decide to move later on you can sell the house for more than you paid or you can rent it out. Either way you make a profit off of your old housing. And if you don’t move, when you’re older you won’t have to pay for housing anymore (except for property tax ofc), putting less financial pressure on you and your family. If you can afford to buy a house, it’s hard for the investment to fail unless there’s something wrong with the house or a natural disaster or something happens, so investing in property is usually the safest thing to invest in versus something like the stock market, which constantly goes up and down

      A starter home is usually because a young family isn't making enough money yet for the home of their dreams. Plus they might also just have one small baby at the time or no kids at all and want to grow their family in the future but maybe not

      I have rats and I never bought a cage labeled as “starter cage” but I did have a self claimed “starter cage” just because most cages that are suitable for rats are targeted towards chinchillas. The bar spacing on chinchilla cages is much wider than rat cages so when my rats are still babies I put them in a temporary set up with smaller bar spacing so they can’t escape their larger home.

    When I first got my dwarf hamster she was in a 10 gallon tank with like an inch of wood shavings for bedding and an inappropriate wheel. Literally the day after I got her I felt uneasy just looking at her setup, so I went online and did real research and I found so much info that differed from what the pet shop told me. Eventually I found your channel. Since finding your videos I have majorly upgraded her cage and bedding and overall quality of life. The difference in her was noticeable, and I feel so much better knowing she has appropriate care. I can't thank you enough for making these videos, I work at a pet store myself and now when people come in and ask me about hamsters I'm able to give them the correct information about their care and I have helped many customers buy the proper supplies. Many people that come in and ask me about hamsters are shocked when I tell them about what they actually need and what's actually harmful. The best part is that most people are accepting of this information and go through with my suggestions :)! I always show them pictures of my hamsters setups which I think helps too. I know it isn't much but if I can help at least a few hamsters out and educate a few people then I'm happy and hopefully they will spread that knowledge.

      They won't... I tried to speak with my mom more times about that xD she still doesn't understand that small doesn't mean small space.
      But... I have bought a big enclosure anyway 😂 i used money from commissions. One of the best and most satisfying things i have ever done.
      This hamster started to live as intended when i moved him in his new home (he belonged to my brother that moved and I decided to keep him because he wasn't well treated at all. Usual issue: plastic and chewed cage, small wheel, low quality food. It was left by himself in the kitchen- never keep an animal in the kitchen!).
      Now the little guy can burrow himself, run around, use an appropriate wheel and eat balanced food (all bought with my money).
      It's .. ignorance. And it makes me angry because ignorance, now, is a choice. With an easy research, now, is easy to find good information. I really love channels like Munchie's for this reason.

    A while back I was looking on Amazon for small animal treats to get for my mouse. I forget what it was but there was a listing of treats advertised for mice that’s first ingredient was milk. Mice are lactose intolerant and can be permanently injured or die from consuming dairy.
    I looked through the review photos because I wanted to see some cute hamsters, and I found a picture of a mouse that looked like it was being kept in a fish bowl, with its food bowl, which was bigger than its body, completely full with the treat. The review said their mouse loved the new food, as in that was all they were feeding it. Also that they’d just gotten that single mouse, which was a female, after their last one died. I was absolutely horrified. Straight up animal abuse, and that’s only what the person willingly shared!

I worked in a pet store at the time and wrote your channel's name down for every customer I came across that had a hamster or was considering one. I told everyone to do some research past our pamphlets and the biggest improvement I noticed right off the bat was people bought bigger wheels so the hamster's back didn't arch. Awesome video! 🥰 It’s really sad how people think “Hamsters are small so they can be in small cages” It’s just cruel. I have a hamster in a 50 gallon bin cage and he’s even starting to show signs of boredom (and he gets loooads of enrichment and about 12 inches of bedding ) So we’re going to upgrade him to a cage with around 1,400 sq inches of floor space. Sometimes when I tell people that they think I’m crazy. They’ll say he’s “just a hamster” and tell me it’s fine for him to live in a shoebox sized cage. But then I always explain why hamsters need so much more! Because they do. They deserve so much more love and the biggest enclosures in the universe. I love my hammy so much and I would let him take over my entire house if that made him happy 😂💕 Hamsters are such amazing creatures. They👏 are👏 not👏 toys👏 They are adorable small rodents that need so much more. They aren’t your 2 year old’s toy. You can’t just throw them in a crittertrail. People really need to give hamsters more love and excellent, adequate care! ❤️ Videos like this do help so much though! Without watching UA-cam videos about good proper hamster care I might’ve not even improved my care standards. But over the years I’ve learned so much more about hamsters and now I’m willing to do anything for my hammy. 🐹 I love him so much 💕

For one, it helps me get it into my head better what types of toys would be good, what bedding I should get, etc. It’s also good because it’s amazing to see that she cares so much she gets angry about improper pet care. Unfortunately, I had a mouse escape from the Prevue 528. The bars in the corners have a gap that is wider than the rest of the wire spacing and one of my mice was able to squeeze out. If you get this cage, and you have juvenile critters, make sure you have rat wire as you will need it to block the escape routes. Other than that, I love the cage. I do wish, however, that Prevue would make larger cages like the ones they have in Europe.

      I upgraded from a small Sterilite 106 quart bin to a large Sterilite 200 quart bin. While the 106 quart bin barley met the 450 square inch minimum, my Syrian hamster behaves better and enjoys the upgraded 200 quart bin slightly over 600 square inches. Even this larger bin didn't cost less than twice as much as the smaller bin, neither are that much larger than a large laundry basket... There is room in any bedroom or den for the larger bin... Why do the pet stores sell cages the size of shoe boxes? Could it be greed?

    I grew up with mice, rats, and hamsters... and have noticed that mice typically benefit from more space as well. We've had many different setups over the years, but we always had better luck with "extra large" enclosures. I wish there were better guidelines for minimum space of mice in the U.S. as well. Most of the "okay for mice" enclosures seem wayyy too small.

    I know munchie mentioned you need special tools to make bin cages, but I cut the bin lids with an exacto knife blade and as long as you're careful it cuts just fine. I use chicken wire to cover the hole which is super cheap. Over all bin cages are under 30$ and far bigger than any of these cages and if you get the right bin even bigger than the preview528

    It’s so crazy that Midwest makes such a bad and dangerous hamster cage! I got their double critter nation cage for my rats and it’s hands down the best, safest, and most secure enclosure I could get for my little bubs! I’m honestly surprised they make such a dangerous product.

    If these cages were larger and made of higher quality material, then some of these designs would actually be pretty cool, like imagine a cage that’s 2 levels, BUT it’s like 600 square inches for each level.
    Or cages that look more like furniture, Incase people don’t want to DIY. Just UGH, we have the options, we just don’t do it in the US for some reason.

    I have the savic heaven (after doing a lot of research) for a baby Syrian who is getting quite big. I took out all the levels that is came with originally. I added a 11 inch wheel, lots of hides, a huge sand bath, and a lot of natural looking climbing elements. Bedding is around 6 inches on most parts but going to add a peg board on the outside for allowance of bedding around 9 inches. I also bring her out daily for free roaming in a play pen. Really hope I’m doing what I can for her!

    the idea of a beginner or starter cage is so weird, unless its in the context of it being a past setup before being better informed. it implies that they're going to improve the set up at a later date, which:
    1. hamsters only live 2 years, maybe 3 or so if you have a robo. while it only may feel like a few months to you, it is a huge portion of your hamster's life. plus, if you plan to upgrade, save some money to put towards the bigger enclosure?
    2. there really isn't an excuse to get a hamster before you have the entire set up ready. you do not NEED a hamster, but they need to live properly.
    3. bin cages! i keep seeing so many people calling 50, 60, even 80 dollar crittertrails "starter cages" when a nice big clear bin is only 25-30ish dollars.
    edit : also its funny that a lot of the reviews will say "this is an absolutely perfect cage with only one small issue. when i look at the cage too long it shatters into a million pieces and my hamster will escape. i found her outside and duct taped the cage until it was unrecognizable, but with a little tlc i was totally satisfied! 5 stars"

But ever since I found her chewing on my old bin cage, I got super worried as she seems to chew on everything. So I changed everything from the cage to the toys into wood, glass or porcelain products, except the wheel, thank god she does not chew on wheels...

    I always wonder if it’s people trying to save money and not want to put in the work because bin cages EXIST! They’re super easy to make even if it means having to put in some work. We did rat rescue for the longest time and I made some bin cages for quarantine for our new rescues before they were able to go in our Double Critter Nation cages. I’ve been looking into hamster rescue but I haven’t taken any in yet because I want to make sure I know their needs before taking one in from Craigslist (there is one female Syrian available because they’re moving) and I am trying to learn as much as possible before I take her in. Rats are very different from hamsters so their needs are different hence why I’d love to do more research. We have a 40 gallon breeder tank as well that I’ve been looking into using however like you mentioned, Syrians are hard to please even in a 40 GB. I’ve been watching your channel for years but I still feel I can learn so much. Any advice?

    It kind of really bugs me that the enclosure has a drop-down wheel into the bedding area. Even though the base is a decent size (compared to others) for a decent amount of bedding the wheel prevents the usability of the bottom section appropriately. This enclosure could have easily designed just a little bit of a bigger footprint, with large entrance doors, and higher walls to accommodate a proper fitting wheel on the top portion. They could have started with the minimum measurements of approximately 25in x 18in for the base to get that minimum 450 sq. Inches making 2nd level bonus space.

    • @samanthaheizer-metcalf9703

      It may be really beneficial for an educational video to be easily accessible that explains the basic accessories and enrichment that small pets need. These starter kits create major confusion on what is the basics needed for a small pet like a hamster. The starter kits have the very basic wheel, food bowl, water bottle, and sometimes a hide house. This creates some significant confusion on what is needed as basics for a small pet setup (like a hamster). It would be really beneficial if there is a video that is more educational and aggressive discussing the basics needed in a startup vs the above and beyond.

    Hi Munchie I currently have an issue- you see I own 5 gerbils and 2 of them are girls, 3 others are boys (girls= Squashy + Bread boys= Omlet + Steve + Dexter) and Steve and bread have officially become mates so we have been forced to keep them away from the others as they will both defend each other with violence but here’s the real problem-.. we now have to keep Squashy (the other female) with the two boys- as we can’t leave her alone. And it would be fine letting her be with them BOTH if Dexter wasn’t her brother- (Dexter, Squash and Bread are all siblings and the other two are also siblings but not the same family) and we wouldn’t mind Omlet mating with squash because that WAS the plan but now Dexter is trying to mate with his sister which as you know just CANT happen for squashes safety- but we cannot split them up because gerbils are social animals and putting them with Steve and bread could result in death-.. and I don’t know what to do!! Please help :(

    1:28 I'd just like to let you know that rabbits don't belong in any ✌rabit in closure or hutch✌. The hole reason hutches were made for was so farmers could breed the rabbits and keep them in closed so they could get fat and then they would eat the rabit. In fact you shouldn't even have a rabit in a hutch and it goes to show how little people research and just go off asumtions.

    • @BetterBetta
      @BetterBetta 3 роки тому

      I’m not a rabbit owner nor highly educated on them, but I was under the impression that rabbits could/should have a small hutch like that as a small hide/bed, IF they had a designated room or much larger play area that they lived in. And it was essentially just a hide, if that makes sense. Is this incorrect?

      I am fully aware. That's why I mentioned it's not suitable, tho the name applies. I've mentioned this in the past these enclosures aren't suitable. C&C style enclosures for rabbits and guinea pigs or free roam your rabbits in their own play area or room.

  • @zoesavage8946
    @zoesavage8946 3 роки тому

    Am I correct in saying that when a hamster is monkey-barring, its a sign of stress. Because both of the schools hamsters were always doing this and I tried to inform the teacher but she just said that it's 'normal' and 'cute' (this was 3 years ago) and the set ups where awful - the cages themselves where well under the bare minimum, I would say that they were only around 100sq inches. They had no wheel, no chew toys, less than an inch of bedding, which was sawdust. I'm not sure and I doubt that any of that has changed, I would go see, but due to the current situation, I am unable to go into the room that the animals are kept in the room is part of a different year group bubble.
    And its not just hamsters that are kept at my school, they also have guinea pigs, a bearded dragon, snakes and leopard geckos, all of which receive very inappropriate and awful 'care'. Its known as animal club, but its honestly more like animal hell the way that they're kept and the teacher/librarian incharge of animal club, I'm almost certain that she knows nothing about animals which makes things worse because whenever someone informs her that they think that there might be something wrong with any one of the animals, her response is "they're fine".
    On top of all that, it's a science classroom where experiments are done, some of which may contain burning things that are possibly toxic for the animals.Which just makes things a whole lot worse
