These videos is exactly why I looked into buying the hamster I plan on buying. He’s one of two hamsters for sale on Craigslist and from what I can see he won’t be coming from great circumstances. His cage is small, he has poor bedding and I don’t think he has a wheel
Rat mom here, I had one of my girls out with me and the last ad broke my heart. I've had rats for about a year now and it still makes me sad how people just don't do enough research.
Can I get a 2-3 of the like critter trail cages or something connected with tubes or is that bad for them right now my cage only has 288 sq in and I hope to give him a better home ( I’ve only had him for a few days & he came with that cage)
Madison Ferrara it’s better to get a bin, it’s cheaper Atleast where I live, I don’t own a hamster but I really want one and that’s why I watch these vid but what I known of, u can get them a bin cage, bins around 450 sq inch, I believe is the minimum size but I might be wrong, on stores like target, Walmart etc I saw one for $25, getting multiple of critter trail cage will prob cost more money and it’s also wired, hamsters will prob chew on them or something, or you can get them a ikea detolf they cost around $60 I believe? Not too sure abt that but they’re pretty cheap and ur hamster will have a lot of space to run around! Or even a tank, I saw some you tubers use a tank for their hamster but I think it needs to be Atleast 40 gallon, those cost around $50 in craigslist, also I recommend something like a bin, tank or detolf is because u can fill up the bedding a lot so they can burrow, Again I don’t own a hamster... these are just things that I searched up abt! I hope the best for u and ur hamster!
I saw an ad on offer up that was titled "2 gerbils with everything in pics" and in the pics, it showed 2 SYRIAN HAMSTERS in a critter trail. one of them even had some wounds probably from fighting. It broke my heart and I want save them and I'm thinking about getting a new hamster so that will be my first option. The seller didn't seem like they knew what they were doing but it was still heartbreaking to see these hamsters getting neglected.
I don't have anywhere where I can adopt in my area but we also don't have any big chain pet stores they are all small pet shops but they take good care of their animals so I am getting my hamster from there (It's called Exotic Pet Shop)
you dont talk too much by the way you just are very passionate and care alot about what your doing your awesome , never let anyone discourage you or make you feel bad about yourself
Hi I just wanted to tell the experience I had with my baby Montee♡. It brought me to tears because today was my first time holding and snuggling him. I wasn't afraid of him but more like afraid of doing something wrong and frightening him and ruining the process I already had. I thankyou so much, you are my inspiration and I want to do what your doing when I'm older. Thankyou again even though you may not see this 🤗
Thank you so much for the information. I love learning about other animals. I have two gerbils and a new what was said to be a winter white but I'm not sure sure as he is 90% black with a little white on his chest and paws.
Last night, I rescued six dwarf hamsters that were in a two tier critter trail. I moved them all into a temporary 40 gallon today. They seemed so happy, they were running around and using their wheels.
As a rat owner that rat ad broke my heart. When I first got my rat bois I had them in a really big tank that I had lend from my aunt, because I had to wait for 4 days for their really big new cage. They had enough toys and they were tiny, but the ammonia buildup in those few days was INSANE. I'm actually shocked my aunt kept her rats in that. I felt so guilty for those few days, but now they are in a big cage with plenty of toys and climbing space and they get to run free everyday
I’d love to see a video about how you run your rescue- routines, how you make sure potential pet parents to find you, how you plan for both expected and unexpected costs, how you set your personal limits for animals, how you determine someone will be a good pet parent when adopting out, and so on.
I slightly touched on it in my how i run my rescue video. It just lightly touched the surface. In details would be lengthy and people already complain i talk too much so i'm holding off for now till i can get everything down on paper for what points i'd like to touch on.
It truly breaks my heart seeing this so many people still do this it's unbelievable especially when everyone has the Internet so they could do research in minutes
The problem is both corporate, and actual customers. As someone who works at a pet store and always suggests bin cages, I promise that out of 100 people I strongly push to make bin cages, only 2 of my customers have. It's very frustrating, but not all employees are bad. Customers are that way, too, and refuse to even consider better options.
These are some of my fav videos!!! Btw I love your channel💕 it is so good that people like you rescue these small pets... with out you I wouldn’t have got a hamster!
Please do more of these! I love your channel. I don’t currently take care of any small animals but I do have a cat. I had 2 female Syrian hamsters growing up and I am thinking about adopting another hamster or possibly doing some research about gerbil care. Your videos are so educational. We need to keep educating people about small pet care.
Ty for your feedback on the new style. Seriously i was kind of down when filming this as i really just wanted to scream at it all. XD But people want less reaction and more education so i'm trying my best.
These are all absolutely terrible, but the rat cage shattered me! I had to cover my two boy's eyes!!! My dumbos are spoiled with a double critter nation with tons of hides and hammocks and toys. I hope to one day do what you do for rats in my local area! I'm learning so much about hamsters thanks to you! I really want to get a long haired syrian eventually, but want to be super prepared!
I was in petsathome recently and saw a employee take out a hamster and drop it straight into the ground. Falling from four feet onto hard floors could cause serious injury but they just put it back into the cage to be sold.
the rat one really upset me 🥺 my three boys live in a BARRED cage which comes up to my shoulders (from the floor), it has the main base and 5 more levels, i even took out the ramps and replaced them with ropes, tunnels, bridges etc. and they are always running at top speed up and down, jumping between ropes, their favourite thing to do is to jump from one of the levels onto their massive hammock. i cannot imagine leaving them with next to no enrichment THEY LOOOOOVVVVVEEE TO PLAY can’t believe people can be so cruel 😢😢
The tractor supply pine shavings are kiln dried. I verified with the manufacturer for my guinea pigs. It also says it on the pallet wrap but not the bags for some reason.
Re: Rat wheels & bedding Young rats who aren't yet fully grown can get on with a 12 inch wheel however the ideal size for a wheel is 16 inches, or 14 for females since they tend to be smaller (however my small females do fine on their 16inch wheel). It's possible to make a good sized wheel with a Lazy Susan (those spinny things for table condiments) if there aren't any appropriate ones near you. In the UK I highly recommend TicTac wheels. Expensive but the best. For bedding, at least over here, Bedmax and Littlemax are both very well thought of. Despite being pine horse bedding they are kiln dried AND dust extracted. They're thought far more highly of than Carefresh and other paper bedding that tends to be far too dusty. Fleece is generally terrible as it doesn't satisfy their instinct to dig and burrow, the ammonia is released back into the air and it doesn't offer the opportunity for them to forage for their food (scatter feeding is far better for enrichment and for prevention of picky eating than bowls). Bedding such as Aubiose, Walmsley cardboard or Softacard can be okay if you're on the fence about Pine (I was until I tried it!). I bury their mix into their substrate and it's great for them to dig through to find their food, and stops them picking their favourite bits out of a bowl!
The cage at 9:44 is actually a bird cage. I bought it as a travel cage when I take my parakeet to the vet. They removed the grill and perches. It’s very cheap so they decided to buy it. That’s disgusting.
Excellent bit about rat care! I own 4 female rats, all under 1 year old. One of them was rescued from a situation where she was housed in a 10 gallon glass tank with a single hide, water bottle, and food dish. There were no toys, she was alone, and it was newspaper pellet bedding (which is ok but is better for their litter box instead). As soon as she got comfortable with me and her new home, I got her 3 sisters and put them all in a giant Double Critter Nation with tons and tons of things to do. People think that rats don't need much, but the reality is that they're so, so intelligent that they're almost like small children! They need friends, they need enrichment, and they absolutely need proper clean cages and plenty of space. Even having a giant cage like I do, I know that they still need free roam time for enjoyment! They're just too smart to spend their lives alone or inside a cage or without things to do. Thank you so much for touching on rat care!
When I was younger I had a rat and I feel so bad because my rat was in a ten gallon with no hides and the pet store employee said that it was ok do that im so ashamed of myself and my parents
@Bean Hello! I would say make sure your cage is big enough for 4, first of all, and then also to not be afraid to fill it with the brim with things to do! Rats love small, enclosed spaces, things to explore and tunnel through, and they love to be up high to sleep. Think of it this way: high for sleep, low for fun. Put toys toward the bottom and hammocks and sputniks at the top of the cage for comfort. Have multiple food dishes (I have 2) and at least 2 water bottles. Do not give them unfiltered water and be sure to change their bedding each week or, if it's a smaller cage, every couple of days. DO NOT use pine and DO NOT use metal-bottomed cages (OR WHEELS). They will get an infection faster than you can say "rat". Cover any metal bars or trays in bedding/cardboard to make it a flat surface that is soft. Fleece is my favorite type of bedding, but it starts to smell faster than the other kinds. (I could literally go on and on, do you have specific questions?)
Rescue story : My husband and I were buying some turkeys for our farm well we came across two ferrets (which we already own two ourselves) kept outside in the heat (which is a big no no ) on the bottom of a chicken coop with only a water bottle. Water bottles are not good on ferrets teeth. I went home without them and kept thinking about them. I told my husband to text them back about the ferrets this time. Well they were asking $120. I vented to my favorite ferret group and we had some pay the $120 for us (which I am donating back) now they are in a double ferret nation with two new siblings inside with the right food and water bowls. Also new names 💖 it’s about a week of having them , they put on weight finally got to meet their new siblings and all get a long and cuddle together :).
I rescued two of my hamsters from OfferUp. They were both free and came in tiny filthy cages. Now they are living it up in huge, enrichment filled habitats!
I have a 9 inch mesh wheel for my Syrian hamster, only because that was the only wheel available to me at the time. I find gluing a thick piece of fabric or felt works great and removes the chance of getting bumble foot. It was also extremely squeaky when I first bought it, and I was able to totally fix it with a little cooking oil!
Oh my god...I just noticed while Munchie was talking about one of the tiny bad cages I looked over and the advertisement on the page was for that crappy tiny MidWest Arcade hamster cage. As if somebody watching this channel is going to go buy that. xD
pets at home have improved a lot. they have paired with the rspca and run adoptions and have been updating their intake policies to be more strict. they even run out of animals until the breeders have the next litters.
The rat one really broke my heart. As I have ratties. They can be on wood, depending on the type. I use to use fleece, but they decided it was more fun to tear it up and eat it than anything else... So they're on a mix of wood shavings and paper pellets
I have a 450 inches floor space bin cage (a bit more actually but close), that was the biggest i could find where i live, would be a problem if i get another one and attached sideway with a tube? Would it be broken space and kind of useless?
My newest guinea pig is a rescue, when I introduced him to my other male guinea pigs he was so exited. He lives in a two storey hutch with a large run 😊
I recently saw a video where a girl was getting a bunny... I decided to watch to see if she needed some advice... a couple seconds in she says... “I had a rabbit for 2 years but we let that one free and we’re getting a new one!” She later said “I like this one better because he’s smaller” (It was a baby bunny) she was literally squeezing the bunny! The bunny looked so scared! She then put him in a tiny cage with hardly any hay!!!
So I didn't know that wire wheels were bad and I have one I'm wondering if I can change it up like filling the wire my idea is using zip ties to fill in the gap
I once was selling a 20 gallon tank i'd been keeping for a leopard gecko, but since i'd rescued a rat (found in -10 celsius weather!) I needed money for the vet. I was making sure to ask people who the tank was for, specified in my ad that it was appropriate for reptiles and maybe gerbils and mice but much preferably something bigger would be better. Someone contacted me and asked if a rabbit could be kept in it. A. A rabbit. In a 20 gallon tank. Wh What. At least the person seemed grateful when i pointed them to other ads for good rabbit cages, but still my jaw dropped! The lack of understanding basic space needs for live animals astounds me everytime!!!
Terri H i honestly can't really imagine even keeping a bunny/rabbit in any sort of cage, back when had my bunny he had the whole gigantic garden to himself and he was the happiest bunny i've seen. why would someone even get a bunny if they plan to keep them locked away when they're supposed to run around and play all day long? why torture animals jesus
Hi, loved the video! Just wanted to say though that there are some species of chameleons that can be housed in glass enclosures--pygmy chameleons, for example.
I have a lot of issues with water dishes and my hamsters getting their bedding and i even had mold in one bed after 3 days! Do you think water bottles are better?? 4 hamster in 2 bin cages and 40 gallon tanks
I have bought my first two guineapigs from a regular pet store. Both unfortunately died very young due to genetic birth defects and since then I have never bought pets from pet stores again. I have adopted one sweet old guy guineapig from a shelter and later on two brothers from a local ethical breeder and I would definitely advise everyone to look towards these two options rather than a pet store...
Muchie, about the tiny tales cages. The water bottle that comes with the cages is actcually good. You just have to turn the beeck of the water bottle.☺
Whenever i visit a pet store just to look around i always sit with the guinea pigs for a minute cuz there my favorite, and i always think they are smaller than i usually see. He won’t let you adopt from Craigslist because Craigslist can be very dangerous, as in people can get harmed or even killed when they get their “items” from the person
@@victoria-sr4om it's a lot less dangerous as long as you meet in a public place (typically like a parking lot of a store where there's people, not at your house or their house or anywhere that there wouldn't be other people) and look out for red flags in the listing
I know I am late for this video but you helped me learn more about hamsters and I have a big bin cage that is 480 square inches I have the right food and the right bedding so this helped me get a hamster and I have a pretty little hamster and I named her donut. I got her from the pet store but that’s because there was nobody on Craigs list and I did ask if they had any hamster in the back for adoption. Thank you for everything 😊
IMO calling number 2 "just shy of being bad" lessens the impact of the scale of neglect and makes it seem like it’s more "okay but could be better" or "not ideal but not bad either". If I were uneducated I would think that care equivalent to what you rated 2 was enough for a hamster or other animal and not make any effort to improve the care of animals I owned or will own in future because of that. I think you should have number 2 called bad and number 1 serious neglect because that way people won’t underestimate the extent it the damage that level of care is doing to the animal. Not trying to be rude, juts something I picked up on that might be an issue.
I had a rat a few years ago. She HATED being in a ball. I tried to get her used to it but she wasn’t having it. But instead of giving the ball back to the store. I ended up tieing it to the ceiling of her cage as a little hide. She didn’t use it for a few weeks. But one day I saw she had moved a TON of her bedding in it, and that became her favorite sleeping spot. XD RIP Mitzi, you were a good little ratty.
That's what most of us use rat balls for :) TERRIBLE for rats, not contested the way hamster balls are, but just straight up terrible and awful. Make excellent beds though!
I know this isnt a specific mouse video but hopefully there are mouse people watching. I have a mouse who is set to be getting some friends within the next week. My concern is with the wheel. The mouse came with a fairly small plastic wheel and there were no stores we could get a better one. We checked stores while on a road trip and eventually found a decent wheel in a store about 7 hours away from where I live. I had gone in with the intent of getting two knowing there would soon be at least three mice needing something to run on however they only had one. We got the one so now I've got one good wheel and one not so good wheel. Should I just leave them with the one good wheel or should I put the other wheel in too even though it's bad?

As a proud rat mom of 8 amazing boys that last one utterly broke my heart
Thanks for these amazing videos+content!
All I know is my bin cage for my hamster is over 500 square in and I did have him in a tiny Tales so I has made a big Improvement in cage size
Good job!!!
It's good that u learnt from ur mistake 👍🏻
Can I give my hamster a toilet paper roll?
Please, get them!
@@jeskemanschot847 I will for sure
Update?
Very Detailed-thanks for looking out for the little ones!
That lipstic looks sooooo good on you and i 💯 agree with you😊
honestly i never got those "watched hugging my pets" comments until i started watching these. terrifying.
They do kiln dry tractor supply shavings. Lots of people use them to line the pans under suggie cages.
I hope you'll enjoy the new style then. :)
Cleaned out glass containers can make nice sand baths . I use old pasta sauce jars.
This style suits you so well!!!
Ty for your feedback on the new style. Seriously i was kind of down when filming this as i really just wanted to scream at it all. XD But people want less reaction and more education so i'm trying my best.
thank you so much Munchie You really help with my Chinese Dorf hamster You are the queen of hamsters
That Rat ad broke my heart!
My dwarf hamster has a 8 inch wheel bigger than the rats wheel.
Early! Love you munchie! My hamsters making a racket while burrowing! 😂🐹❤️
I'm pretty sure, but I might be wrong, that the cage at 18:21 is a bird cage.
I was in petsathome recently and saw a employee take out a hamster and drop it straight into the ground. Falling from four feet onto hard floors could cause serious injury but they just put it back into the cage to be sold.
They didn’t even check if the hammie was ok??!! 😭
the rat one really upset me 🥺 my three boys live in a BARRED cage which comes up to my shoulders (from the floor), it has the main base and 5 more levels, i even took out the ramps and replaced them with ropes, tunnels, bridges etc. and they are always running at top speed up and down, jumping between ropes, their favourite thing to do is to jump from one of the levels onto their massive hammock. i cannot imagine leaving them with next to no enrichment THEY LOOOOOVVVVVEEE TO PLAY can’t believe people can be so cruel 😢😢
Absolutely LOVE videos like this
The tractor supply pine shavings are kiln dried. I verified with the manufacturer for my guinea pigs. It also says it on the pallet wrap but not the bags for some reason.
Some people think that to keep and animal, stick em in a shoebox, food, water, wheel. Perfect decoration for your kids bedroom.
Amazing video! Also this is off topic but I love your hair. Love your channel and what you do for small animals ❤️
Re: Rat wheels & bedding
Young rats who aren't yet fully grown can get on with a 12 inch wheel however the ideal size for a wheel is 16 inches, or 14 for females since they tend to be smaller (however my small females do fine on their 16inch wheel).
Rescue story :
My husband and I were buying some turkeys for our farm well we came across two ferrets (which we already own two ourselves) kept outside in the heat (which is a big no no ) on the bottom of a chicken coop with only a water bottle.
That cage with the aluminum can that would probably be really sharp
I rescued two of my hamsters from OfferUp. They were both free and came in tiny filthy cages. Now they are living it up in huge, enrichment filled habitats!
Hey I'm getting a robo in April the cage is 50x80x50 cm is that large enough?!
I love your Craigslist videos!
Thank you, i hope you enjoy the new style of CL Ads. :)
@@MunchiesPlace omg hi! Yes I think the ad ranking system you made is brilliant
The white bag of pine shaving at tractor supply is not kiln dried. However the yellow bags are. :)
Hey, what do you suggest, a water bowl or a water bottle. My hamster doesn’t mind either but I was wondering what one would be better
Sapphire Edits both
At 16:51 it had no wheel also :)
Oh my god...I just noticed while Munchie was talking about one of the tiny bad cages I looked over and the advertisement on the page was for that crappy tiny MidWest Arcade hamster cage. As if somebody watching this channel is going to go buy that. xD
Great video as always!
Pets at home have a rescue section in stores, they also have clubs that teach children how to care for small animals
pets at home have improved a lot. they have paired with the rspca and run adoptions and have been updating their intake policies to be more strict. they even run out of animals until the breeders have the next litters.
That rat setup broke my heart
The rat one really broke my heart. As I have ratties. They can be on wood, depending on the type. I use to use fleece, but they decided it was more fun to tear it up and eat it than anything else... So they're on a mix of wood shavings and paper pellets
I have a 450 inches floor space bin cage (a bit more actually but close), that was the biggest i could find where i live, would be a problem if i get another one and attached sideway with a tube? Would it be broken space and kind of useless?
I have a special place in my heart for rats and this makes me so sad. My ratties are so spoiled so this was so sad for me.
Just buy a better wheel. They deserve it. Zip ties would probably be worse tbh
Wh
What.
Honestly you are such a lovely soul
Hi, loved the video! Just wanted to say though that there are some species of chameleons that can be housed in glass enclosures--pygmy chameleons, for example.
I have a lot of issues with water dishes and my hamsters getting their bedding and i even had mold in one bed after 3 days! Do you think water bottles are better?? 4 hamster in 2 bin cages and 40 gallon tanks
U should put the water bowl on a level
18:15 ummmmm that’s a BIRD CAGE I CHECKED OML
I believe it was an old style of the Abby cage:
Nvm, i think i found it: - www.amazon.com/dp/B07F1GB89D
I like the new format and rating system.
The first thing I noticed was the ps badge 😍😍
Whenever i visit a pet store just to look around i always sit with the guinea pigs for a minute cuz there my favorite, and i always think they are smaller than i usually see. I think any animal at a petstore besides cats and dogs are not full grown not just hamsters. The animals are tiny. And i support adopt before shop. Thank you for spreading the messsge around
Great video.
I would adopt my hammies from you.... But I live in the Netherlands.
For my horse I use pine shavings
Luv u munchie 💖💞❤️
My dad won’t let me adopt from Craigslist, so I had to find a breeder. Good thing I found one! 🐹💕
He won’t let you adopt from Craigslist because Craigslist can be very dangerous, as in people can get harmed or even killed when they get their “items” from the person
Try looking in petfinder! Or go to petco and see if they have any adoptions in the back!
CrazyBunny Lady Okay! 💕
@@victoria-sr4om it's a lot less dangerous as long as you meet in a public place (typically like a parking lot of a store where there's people, not at your house or their house or anywhere that there wouldn't be other people) and look out for red flags in the listing
I’m rescuing a winter white hamster today! I feel so bad for her. She has a mesh wheel
The bedding at 22:05 is from Walmart, just as the food is.
The pine shavings look like the shavings you’d put in a horse stall
Thank you for making this video. It’s horrifying to think that people can be so neglectful
XD
RIP Mitzi, you were a good little ratty.
That's what most of us use rat balls for :) TERRIBLE for rats, not contested the way hamster balls are, but just straight up terrible and awful. Make excellent beds though!
🐹you always make me smile even if I'm sick🐹
I love the new style!
Best wheel is a 9” Niteangel Super Silent Hamster Wheel.
Im in the UK and im getting a hamster from pets at home because i don't know any other close pet shops i need your advice if i should just get one from there or ....?
THOSE POOR RATS!! T^T that was just terrible! Ahhh my heart!
