Thank you KD. I'm cooking my super in it right now. The metal handle does get hot, but I always use gloves. Been burnt too many times thinking a handle would be cool to the touch.
Super cool, William. I'm fascinated by these little military mess kits. The little stoves too. Have an obvious favorite? I'd love to see your collection all together.
@morte2195 You should check out this guy youtube.com/@john-sherwood-w4jfs?si=v2DbQz6pTBn24MZq He has a bunch of videos on different military mess kits. I have a few favorite mess kits. It's hard to narrow it down to just one.
@@WilliamsKnifeLife Yeah, I know. I've been slowly working my way through your mess kit play list. Might take a while. ;) And now I'll have to watch Sherwood too! Some really cool kits in there. Each one a little piece of History. I just bought a West German kit with the leather strap around it. Seems like these original kits are disappearing from my giant local Military Surplus store and getting expensive fast on eBay. Did you get issued a mess kit in the USAF?
VDV….A great no nonsense and versatile bit of kit……and apologies if already mentioned …...I replaced that dreadful issue water bottle rubber seal with 3-4 plastic seals placed together….the ones you get inside your average wine bottle top. Give it a go….fits and works perfect
I have two of the Soviet kits , good thing to have if you cant take a lot of gear . That said , its on the small side compared to the US 1 quart and cup . The Chinese kit looks even smaller than the Soviet kit , I dont think I would want that , to take on a trip . Might be good for an older child going camping . If you notice , on the soviet kit , the handled pot has a small notch on the sides of the lip . That i for using the boiler pot wire handle to lock in the smaller pot , if you use it like a lid for the boiler . Kind of a neat feature .
Yes, they even have a way of making the soviet kit a water distillation set up with a tube. I can get most of my cooking done in a canteen cup. The Russian kit seems a little sturdier than the Chinese one. The basic Russian mess kit isn't too bad either.
I think it was Ebay. Yes, it was. Here's the link. I think they have 2 left. I'm not affiliated with the seller other than I bought one from them & it arrived on time. www.ebay.com/itm/Original-Chinese-PLA-Type-78-Military-Army-Mess-Kit-Canteen-Kettle-Lid-Set-/264509992567?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0
Thank you Michael. No Canadian kit yet. I have part of the British kit, the Osprey canteen & plastic cup, but I don't have the Crusader system yet. It's like collecting knives. Just when you think the collection is complete, you find more missing pieces.
When you thought the Chinese just copied stuff, this shows they can invent stuff themselves. Not bad, a little small canteen but very functional. the opening is a little on the small side so no icecubes to keep a cold drink for say by some nice fried fish... Have a nice day too William and thank you.
Have both The Russian one is built like a tank. It is heavy But is sturdy. The Chinese one is very light. If you want to take some thing camping, the Chinese one is better. If you can bear the weight, the russian is better.
The metal fastener on the Chinese kit looks similar to the handle on the U.S. mess kit. Cool buddy, take care !

Hi William, a great video, I agree with you great engineering on the Chinese canteen.
Thank you
Take care
Sam
Thank you Sam. It's funny, but MRE's and the flameless heaters basically made mess kits obsolete in the military.
