I am from exYU country and this kit is great, however it has some downsides. First I would point you some things you missed, knife has can opener on side of it, and if you see the notch on big plastic bowl (at video you closed it at wrong side so it cant close) it is used to attach it to the handle of metal bowl. Setuped like that mini bowl comes in the middle (tea/salad bowl), so whole set it can be carried with one hand for better management when you eat. Downsides would be lack of shallow frying pan as it is very hard to fry with big bowl, and bag that comes with it is made from very bad material - now days they use much better one (this is from cold war era). Also there is a lack of stove. I see you made review of Swiss M71 military stove which is copy of old exYU field stove. In YU there ware two types of those Agor 4 (much like M71 - for paratroopers and spec ops) and larger model Agor 6. Together with mess kit its bulky solution. I would recommend East German stove for use with this kit. Anyhow reason for not having stove with mess kit as an integral part is deployment of troops in YU mil tactic, and there are bigger (unit) field mess kits for cooking - size about A3 paper sheet and tall as A4. These bigger field mess kits are squared in wood box with added windshield stand for different types of fuel with a lot of options for cooking and are made stainless steel. (also there is this soldier mess kit of stainless steel (officer and contract soldier version) its much more rare and its made because of fact that Aluminum is not good for a long term use as eating pot.) If you are interested I can send you original army manual for mess kit. Sorry about my English and hope this helps.
Hey there brother, thank you so much for sharing your in-depth knowledge of this kit. I appreciate it and I know the viewers do as well. By the way, you English is great! Cheers my friend. Be well. - Luke
So many reviews of JNA mess kit , and no one show propper way of use ! First , kit is not intended for use as part of YU MRE ( SDO) , but to be used in conjuction with field kitchen ! So, for meals normaly cooked by cook! Further on - kit is designed to be used as follows : - kit is usually worn on belt - prior to use , kit is pulled out from pouch , big plastic lid removed , and bottle put back in pouch . - big plastic lid/pot is hooked on free part of handle . Usualy kit was hold by Left hand ,from below . Small pot/lid/cup was hold by fingers , seating on handle . Once on line , soldier must cooperate with fast guys in kitchen , rotating kit , alowing them to fill proper food, fast ! Usualy , soup goes in metal part, main dish in big plastic , and salad in small cup! When on field , there is a problem to wash mess kit . field kitchen , on mess exit , provide some cans with boiled watter and some detergent , but soldiers usualy use too much of it Later , detergent was distibuted in small yellow bottles , no more than 30-50ml! Latter on, soldiers “invent” so cold “ condoms” for mess kit ! Simple 1liter freezer bag was put inside pot, prior receiving meal. After meal, all you need is to throw bag away ! In general, keeping mess clean was real challenge ! I’ve been “luccky” during my service days- base kitchen was rebuild for two months in middle of Slovenian winter ! So, food was cooked in field kitchen, mess was under tent , all that in the midle of (air)base !!!
I bet you wouldn't be so excited about this kit if you had to use it in real life. The kit is really awesome. The material (metal) that the cutlery is made of is super quality - stainless steel. Actually, everything that Yugoslavian military has ever made is high quality. I've used one of these kits in 1992-93. I even have one of those knifes now.The can opener is the best, although my wife still cannot use it after 14 years of marriage. :D
Those are really cool. One of the most complete kits I've seen. I got one on e-bay. It was missing the cup, I emailed the seller and he mailed it out to me. Very nice.
Luke, your reviews are the best! We appreciate how you get right down to business and give a good thorough review. Most of these UA-cam producers love to hear themselves talk about nothing related to the review. Thanks Luke.
Also, the large plastic cup hooks onto the end of the pot handle. I just picked one of these puppies up at my local Army/Navy store. I did pay a bit more for it, but it does look like a great piece of gear. I can't wait to try it out on a camping trip!
Bob Holmes Joining a 6 dl square thermoplastic bowl with the aluminium pot is previsioned for receiving prepared foods and ready-to-eat foods from mobile military field kitchens and mobile military porridge caldrons. Such a possibility exists for feeding the troops in difficult weather conditions or hostile environment, and I hope that's not what you are looking for. 1½ dl plastic cup is covering 1 liter liquids bottle (canteen) with a no-loss screw-on cap. However, if you have ever wanted a sturdy and virtually indestructible piece of gear, which is not lightweight compared to a fancy titanium kits, or cheap, lightweight, and woefully inadequate clam-shell tin foil mess kits - you have purchased exactly what you have wanted and you will not regret it. I wish you to enjoy unforgettable moments on camping trips and outdoor activities.
Ivan. You forgot something. ua-cam.com/video/4sRSAUeGrWg/v-deo.htmlm32s When you assemble mass kit you can place it over you thigh/knee so you don't have to hold it in your hand or place it on ground.
Not everything was bad in Yugoslavia. :) Did u noticed small notch on one side of bigger plastic container? That is to attach it to the handle so alluminum part is on one side, plastic is on another. Soldier went with that combo to the field kitchen, holding it in the middle, where he would get hot food in alluminum part and hot water on another, to prepare tea or coffe from extract. Both cans would be very hot, so middle handle was used to carry them to the place where you would consume it. At the same time it is easyer to carry ballanced load than just one pan with 1kg of weight holding handle. Peace of advice. You never pour wine or brandy into that plastic cantine. It will etch the plastic and it is nearly impossible to rinse. Soldiers used to smuggle alcohol from field trainings to the barracks. That plastic reacts with the acids in wine and next morning it is pure vinegar taste and/or smell which is impossible to rinse out with watter. Of course watter tastes awfull after being in that cantine during hot day. What you have is modern kit after Yugoslavia broke up. Before the cantine was made from alluminum as well and it was more durable ragarding wine :)
Have one just like it, belonged to my dad when he was in the yugoslavian army-was and still is a bulletproof peace of kit! Don't know if you noticed but the knife has a can opener integrated on the side where the fork and spoon go! Keep up the good work! Davor
Top plastic container to attach to the end of the handle and metal containers intended for the feeding of the military field kitchen. You get a bowl of soup and a main dish assembled using metal handles.
Here, in Serbia, I bought last summer 3 of that, from surplus, it is made in middle 80's, excellent condition, each was 250 dinars, it is about 2,5$ for each, believe or not. :) These things are the best budget mess kit i ever found. I hope that you will be happy with that, you make a good deal. These things will last you for long my friend, be sure. :) Regards from Serbia. :)
Like your review so much I bought one without the cover and utensils for $10.00 at a thrift store. I put the Yugoslavian mess kit in a Swiss combat pouch with a Boy Scout cutlery set and had room to spare for other things in the Swiss rubberized pouch.
the knife has bottle opener, and just below it a can opener (the sharp curved spike). also the metal handle goes into the square plastic bit on the big plastic cup, so you can hold both big cups in one hand, and it's extremely handy and very stable for putting it over your thigh or a branch, so you have both hands free...great piece of kit...just remember to wash it right away after using it, otherwise it could get bit smelly.
The way it's designed and fits together draws in backpackers like moths to a flame, it's hard to explain why but it just fits together right! regardless of one or two drawbacks I'm glad I got one and with a little care it'll last for life, if you're a bit wary of the material the pouch is made of apparently the PLCE, BCB Crusader waterbottle/cook kit pouch fits this kit in and that gives you a few more carrying options. Thanks for the upload!
Have been eyeing this kit up recently so an apt timing for this review. I only recently bought myself the Yugoslavian backpack and wool blanket, so this'll be added to my shopping list now :) Thanks for making this review bro and kind regards from here in London ~Peace!
I love this set, very good value. My brother and I have used that kit both Canoe and Jeep camping. Very compact and easy to pack. My brother used one with German Esbit stove and tabs. The thick aluminum heats slower than the thinner east German or Swedish mess pots. We found it's best use is to heat up boiling water for cooking MRE boil in the bag style. I cooked SPAM and beans by placing the pot next to the campfire. This is a area where the thick aluminum helps you. The handle was never to hot to grab. One of the best ways to use this kit is with a small Trangia Alcohol stove set on a modified Esbit folding stove. (Cut center of Esbit out to allow room for burner) What is needs is a extra compartment to carry a tiny stove and be used as a windscreen pot/stand. I may buy a second set and see if I can make a container stand out of the main po.t
Using the kit utensils in home daily, kit in pantry ready to go. Be sure to wash properly when you get these, -storage odor, - use stovetop w GI stove as spacer . Handy kit
I also have this set. You did miss the fact there is a can opener on the knife also with my knife there is a seratted good for cteak spreading butter etc. And then sharpish blade under the small serrations
There is a slot on the platic container so it can be attached to the end of the silver handle, that way you can hold both containers in one hand, and enjoy your meal! ;)
this is a good cheap kit. on long trips I use the h2o bottle for cooking only. it saves space by not having cook kit. then drinking water. then cooking water (if you can not filter). on short trips I leave the h2o bottle and cup behind and put my food inside the kit also saving space, it can be hung like a bear bag from the attachment loops and is relatively water proof .
Great over all package but the only flaw is that only one part is metal. The plastic feels like if you push it too hard that it will break. I havnt put anything hot in mine yet, so I wonder if it would melt? Its a great casual kit or backyard camping. There are simply better mess kits out there but for the price, this is great for the money.
This is not the original Yugoslavian Mess Kit. I have the original and it is completely built out of aluminum+tin, the only plastic part is the canteen screw on cap. This differs a lot in weight BUT you can fill your canteen with lightly filtered water and boil it without having to change containers
Nice bit of kit for sure... What I like about it is that its squared off which allows for easier pack placement as where round mess kits waste alot of space... Military surplus is bomb proof gear:):):)
The kit is a bit on the heavy side. But, it is very well contained and I would not want to trade it. If you want a lighter kit, you must sacrifice the compact and full nature of this kit.
I picked up the Italian set at Sportsman Guide if only because they had run out of the German set after watching your German episode. They look identical
bought few of those from mil surp store couple of years ago for 3€ per piece. been using it now and then, one of better on the market despite its age. imho better than crusader from british military.
I have to say, I'm a fairly new subscriber, but from what I've seen of your videos I'm absolutely thrilled. Thank you so much for your time and effort in these vids. I've been debating getting the Yugoslavian mess kit for some time, buy the description at CheaperThanDirt.com wasn't enough to sway my opinion... Your review made up my mind for me :-) Thanks again, and keep it up!!! -T.D.P.
Thanks for the response boss yea i know its a bit heavy figured id give it a shot asking you i like how in depth your reviews are but no problem i look forward to your next video
Yes these are excellent kits especially for the money. I also like the French surplus kits but these Yugos are great. Great video man thanks for posting it!
I have this kit what you not say it does have can opener an pop bottle opener on knife it self he right a good mess kit people collect it but my is fore use in survival training and bugging out
Man these things were plentiful and cheap. Now you have to hunt. You were right these rock. Do you remember when summer rolled around and mom kicked you outside because if the school wasnt watching neither was she? Maybe that was me, anyway when I was thirsty, she told me to drink from the hose. Well one wif of these brings those days back to mind. Wow fresh out of the garden hose smell. So how did you get rid of that? Thanks in advance... Mike
Hey there Mike, How are you doing my friend? Haha I do what you mean, my mother kicked my brother and I out of the house in the morning and we weren't allow in until dark. As for the smell, try white vinegar. - Luke
A really great mess kit. However, DO NOT USE HEXI BLOCKS with it! It burned off some of the enamel and left hideous staining. I had to get another one. I didn't mind, because it's that good of a kit. It packs really well, thanks to the rectangular shape. I carry the canteen in a side pocket of my pack, and I store cooking items in the cook pot/large cup and put it in my pack's main compartment. I pitched the small cup, though. Very versatile unit. Highly recommended by moi.
Nice vid. The design is great but if you want a similar kid (with a little different shape) made all of aluminum I'd recommend the west german messkit (Bundeswehr Feldgeschirr) cheers Marc
this "made in Serbia" isnt the original Yugo stuff, its made recently , in demand of those mess kits... too many have been lost due to people taking them home after they finish army service...and military throwing them away as broken to military junk yard.... old Yugo made dont have such made in Serbia card, because it was made in various places around former Yugoslavia and there was small card where was stamp when was made and in which factory...
It is interesting but I like putting stuff in my less kits. The canteen eats up all that space. I can also imagine it would be a little hard to eat out of being so deep. I have an East German mess kit and while I like it a lot it's find of hard to eat from for the same reasons. Still looks damned neat.
Yugoslavia disintegrated in the early 1990's - almost 30 years ago! I am fairly certain that this is a much newer mess kit, which is definitely used by the Serbian army nowadays, and possibly by some of the other new countries formed following the collapse/war of Yugoslavia.
Hi, I have one of these and I was just wondering if the canvas bag could be used as a millbank bag in your opinion to filter particulate matter out of turbid water prior to boiling to make safe drinking water?
ps the knife in that kit can be sharpened razor sharp with something like a fallkniven dc4 (what I used) - just watch your fingers getting it into/out of the bag! Also, the knife has a can opener on it - which works well :)
interesting peace of surplus kit: great form factor and cheap ;) It looks compact compared to the Swedish Army Mess Kit or the West German army mess kit, both of them heavy but bomb proof and no plastic parts. A third option is the BCB Crusader II Cooking System. It's a great system for bushcraft. Unfortunatelly is a little pricy but still compact and not really heavy. take care... ;)
Do you like rectangles more than you like ovals and kidney shapes? If you answered, "YES" , to any of these questions, this is the military surplus mess kit for you.

this is the best cooking kit I use it everytime on a mountain

Like your review so much I bought one without the cover and utensils for $10.00 at a thrift store. I put the Yugoslavian mess kit in a Swiss combat pouch with a Boy Scout cutlery set and had room to spare for other things in the Swiss rubberized pouch.

Watching in 2022..
Little wee baby Luke aww.. ❤️
Super functional!! Hay! used the "cup" for dog on trail😍
Yugoslavia mess kit in Shenandoah NPS, worked great! & you can add dog water bowl to usages.
We still use them in our military... Pretty fucking usefull. Cofeeeeeee....

Really thinking on getting one of these because of my Yugoslavian(Slovenian) heritage.
Ironic that you would be glorifying germanics if you are indeed Slovenian.
@@Vedlom They are well known as
German cocksockers! They were shooting at Yugoslav army back at 1991.Desolution of Yugoslavia came thanks Slovenian.

What an awesome kit. I don't know if you noticed, but the knife has a bottle opener on it.
Hey Andrew,
thanks for pointing that out. I completely overlooked it.

My father has the same one he got it when he was a soldier for the yugoslavian army at that time, together with the uniform and other stuff,
Very cool indeed!

I have like 7 or 8 unopened kits, n 4 opened... Quality awesome,
this is a good cheap kit. on long trips I use the h2o bottle for cooking only. it saves space by not having cook kit. then drinking water. then cooking water (if you can not filter). on short trips I leave the h2o bottle and cup behind and put my food inside the kit also saving space, it can be hung like a bear bag from the attachment loops and is relatively water proof .
Love this kit, Luke! Did you also notice that there's a can opener and bottle opener on the knife as well?
very well thought out kit.
If I could have this in all stainless steel....perfection. I like the rectangular shape, and the sturdy pot.

Nice review as always.I love the tin/bottle opener on the knife.
Decent bits of kit they are Luke. Big in the uk too.. but the more popular ones here are the Swedish mess Kits. They are amazing. Take care bro.

I've been debating getting the Yugoslavian mess kit for some time, buy the description at CheaperThanDirt.com wasn't enough to sway my opinion... Your review made up my mind for me :-) Thanks again, and keep it up!!! -T.D.P.
I've been seriously thinking about picking up a couple of them. You forgot to mention that the knife also has a can opener and bottle opener on it.
harleyrider51561 For the money it's a great kit, no doubt about it.
You're right, I did forget the bottle opener.
Cheers.

In my best Australian accent: "That's not a spoon... that's a spoon!"
Haha "I heard he whittled his spoon from a bigger spoon."

The best kit
Awesome review brother, I just picked up two of these myself.
I just got one of these. I find the walls where the canteen halves come together seem flimsy. But all in all a great piece.
Yes these are excellent kits especially for the money. I also like the French surplus kits but these Yugos are great. Great video man thanks for posting it!
Thanks for watching and commenting Roses.
Be well.

Very very practical. Love it Luke, awesomeness! :)
You're welcome my good friend.

The Weather Channel says you guys are getting hammered. I'll bet you're out in it right now, knowing you. ahhaaha!
Rich we definitely got hammered. Over a foot of snow on the ground and it was amazing!
I couldn't help but be out in it the entire time. Haha

Mike
Hey there Mike,
How are you doing my friend? Haha
I do what you mean, my mother kicked my brother and I out of the house in the morning and we weren't allow in until dark. As for the smell, try white vinegar.

Yugoslav mess kit. For when you want a square meal in the field, or rather a rectangular one.
Thanks for commenting and sharing brother.
Definitely a great kit.
Be well.

Nice vid. The design is great but if you want a similar kid (with a little different shape) made all of aluminum I'd recommend the west german messkit (Bundeswehr Feldgeschirr) cheers Marc
Thank you for the suggestion Marc.
Be well my friend.

My dad used to have one of those when he was in the Serbian Army
RRROBOTNIK That's cool. Does he have any left over gear that you can use?- Luke
this "made in Serbia" isnt the original Yugo stuff, its made recently , in demand of those mess kits... too many have been lost due to people taking them home after they finish army service...and military throwing them away as broken to military junk yard.... old Yugo made dont have such made in Serbia card, because it was made in various places around former Yugoslavia and there was small card where was stamp when was made and in which factory...
It is interesting but I like putting stuff in my less kits. The canteen eats up all that space. I can also imagine it would be a little hard to eat out of being so deep. I have an East German mess kit and while I like it a lot it's find of hard to eat from for the same reasons. Still looks damned neat.
hey Luke, i see these all the time on youtube, but very few people using them, have you used yours and if so is it in one of your videos?
Yugoslavia disintegrated in the early 1990's - almost 30 years ago! I am fairly certain that this is a much newer mess kit, which is definitely used by the Serbian army nowadays, and possibly by some of the other new countries formed following the collapse/war of Yugoslavia.
I just got one recently and it has JNA 79 on the back of the pot.
Looks bomb proof! I like it! :)
It pretty much is Tom.
Be well my friend.

Is the water canteen in aluminium or plastic ? What is the total weight ?
Hi, I have one of these and I was just wondering if the canvas bag could be used as a millbank bag in your opinion to filter particulate matter out of turbid water prior to boiling to make safe drinking water?
ps the knife in that kit can be sharpened razor sharp with something like a fallkniven dc4 (what I used) - just watch your fingers getting it into/out of the bag! Also, the knife has a can opener on it - which works well :)
Very nice and usefull, cool video
Thanks Juan.
- Luke
Hey buddy:-) Take a look at the handle on the knife. You can also open a can and a bottle with the knife:-)
Great point brother. I didn't even notice it.
Take care and be well.
- Luke
Looks like there is a bottle opener on the knife.
+Arteom Pisarchuk There's a can opener too
cool kit. What the pot made of? aluminum?
I have 8 of those
interesting peace of surplus kit: great form factor and cheap ;) It looks compact compared to the Swedish Army Mess Kit or the West German army mess kit, both of them heavy but bomb proof and no plastic parts. A third option is the BCB Crusader II Cooking System. It's a great system for bushcraft. Unfortunatelly is a little pricy but still compact and not really heavy.
take care... ;)
Some great suggestions there Condary.
Be well my friend.

You said it was surplus but it looks brand new?
Great review do you think you could ever review the usmc 2 man combat tent
Hey there Ryan,
It's possible that I could get one but man that's one HEAVY tent! Over 10lbs!
Be well brother.
- Luke
like the kit but it would be nicer to have the stove included like with the German or Swiss kits
Good point Moe.
-Luke
I think I would buy it just for the cool silverware set
What`s the dimensions and capacity of the cooking pot? I`m thinking that it might integrate well with my Dutch Army mess tins.
0,8 lit
just curious, why have many companies and nations moved from pan-based. kits to pot-based kits?
+Perktube1 They're more versatile than pan-based kits. You can cook more and boil more water, or heat up drinks, etc. Also, less/easier to carry.
sometimes simple items are better, Nice KIT
Where could I buy one Luke ? Thanks
William
your video are nice MERCI
Is the plastic BPA free!
Is the metal pot aluminum or steel?
I`m from serbia JEJ hhahahahah Pozzz
I ja isto
Where can u buy it
this is surplus cold war era kit - that why is sooooo cheap. Much better stuff now, but cost more because it is better.
Do you like rectangles more than you like ovals and kidney shapes? If you answered, "YES" , to any of these questions, this is the military surplus mess kit for you.
Like it
